Another probably-dumb question, but is body paint allowed? I plan on going to the ball as formal!Terezi, and I need to know if I'm allowed to grey up for that or not (if not, that's fine, I'm just curious).
heres the semi-official answer. i would strongly/highly/whatever-other-ly word suggest against body paint
for all the reasons that nina star 9 said but also for the cleanliness purpose.
and from what i'm reading, if ur outfit has horns, then i would slightly suggest against wearing them.
formality of the event and all...

I have tons of business formal clothes to wear, but feel like that's too ordinary.

Will most people be coming formal-cosplay attire?

Suggestions to "juice up" whatever I wear at work would be cool.  Too bad I can't really find HP dress robes, haha.
from what i've seen in the past, about 2/3rds do come in formal cosplay of some kind. at least for the girls, it could be cosplay but just looks like a very very fancy dress, which works out too
but i personally, as well as most of the ppl on staff, are just gonna be in formal outfits (dresses for girls and collared shirt/slacks/suits for guys)

And now for the official answer! :P

Body paint, if on the arms/chest/back/etc might be... not fun to dance in. If your outfit is cosplay (which it seems like it is with all the homestuck/humanstuck talk), horns will be fine!

Wearing formal cosplay to the Black and White Ball depends on the year, the theme, the costumes, etc, but we do have a huge amount of people attending the ball in cosplay. Personally, I'm wearing a formal dance top and slacks this year. :P

For a good way to "juice up" formal business attire.. it depends on what you have, really.

For male business attire, the style of the tie and vest (if you choose to wear one) can really make a difference. Cufflinks and any other things that may seem little could make a pretty nice change from business to ball. :)

For female business attire, costume jewelry works wonders! Hunt local thrift stores to see what they may have - what may look gaudy with one top may look awesome with another.

Wow, heels have to be at least a nickel in diameter? That's a wide heel. What would you recommend to make the heel larger? Can I just, like... glue a nickel to the bottom or something?

There are multiple reasons as to why we have the heel width requirement; safety for the wearer, safety for those dancing around them, as well as protecting the dance floor from permanent damage. Don't feel the need to explain the high risk of rolled ankles, but if someone gets their foot/ankle stepped on by a stiletto-type heel (even if by accident), it can cause damage (temporary or permanent) to skin, muscles, and even has a small chance of breaking bones in the feet. I have a few small scars on my own feet from such encounters... it's pretty painful.  :-\

Solutions may vary depending on what type of heel you are planning on wearing. They do, however, make heel protectors that can meet the heel width requirement. If you are adamant about wearing a certain pair of heels, I recommend looking for heel protectors - you can get them for $5-10 depending on where you look.   ;)

My wife and I are going as Makishima Shogo(her) and Shinya Kougami(me) aka: http://static.minitokyo.net/downloads/30/03/602680.jpg

The rules list all black shoes as allowed even if they are "TOMS"
My question is this: Her shoes are clean white slip-ons (basically "TOMS") to match her Makishima Shogo cosplay. Can we get this approved?  Much Thanks, ^_^

Semi-official answer. Unfortunately I don't know the cosplay that well so I can't say that it would be 100% appropriate. But the term 'slip on' worries me. Im worried that it would slip off too easily and that would be a safety concern. Wait for Becca who's head, to officially answer, but I would consider looking for a way to keep the shoe securely on or choose another alternative for the ball.

Hope this helps :)

I have a dress I made that goes a good bit above my knees that I was planning on wearing if I end up attending the ball,

I was wondering if I wore leggings under it if it would be acceptable? Or is it just a no?

Totally going to wear it as Lightning though, lol

@BrianSmith42 - White slip ons are fine as per the "flats" part of the dress code as long as they do not mark the floor and don't look really informal (i.e. fuzzy slippers).  We explicitly state Toms/Vans because we know those brands have non-marking soles but some of the styles are on the borderline of formal.

@KuriQueen - Nope, sorry, the skirt length is a hard requirement.  :(  But, I believe that if you were to wear an opaque slip underneath the skirt that cover up to the knees, you would be allowed in.  Becca may have confirmed that earlier in this thread.

Doesn't KuriQueen's dress reach the top of her kneecaps?  :o

@rubysky - I'm taking her word for it that it's above her knees since the perspective from her picture makes it hard to tell.

Cosplay is allowed if it fits within the dress code restrictions.. and unfortunately trainers are not allowed. As an easy fix, I recommend bringing along a pair of shoes that fit within the dress code and change into the dress shoes before getting on the dance floor. That way, you can still be in full cosplay for a good portion of the time, but still follow the dress code. :)

But be sure to show your shoes at the door to the monitors so you're not barred outright :).

Hi! Sorry for the really late question, but would this dress be okay? You can see my knees so I wasn't too sure about it

Technically, no, because the highest exposure is above your kneecap.  However, see my comment above about slips.

Quick question
Would a dress with spagetthi straps be acceptable?
I'll probably be wearing a cardigan over it
