Hello, everyone!

Every year, the Black and White Ball staff works as hard as they can to learn and grow from the feedback given by attendees - and this year is no exception. One of the things I noticed was that, while many people enjoyed the playlist, there were some that felt that some of the songs did not fit everyone's thoughts of what they imagined to hear at a Black and White Ball. So here is your chance! We would like to have your input on the playlist. For those who may not exactly remember what they liked or didn't like about the previous playlists, feel free to look through them below.

2010: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16384.msg425094.html#msg425094
2011: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16384.msg423410.html#msg423410
2012: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,17507.msg444203.html#msg444203
2013: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,17730.msg446669.html#msg446669

Now, here are some things you should know about the playlist. The playlist is generally a compilation of suggestions from the forums, social media outlets, and word of mouth. The Black and White Ball staff will look through the suggestions to look for songs that have a steady beat to dance to and fit with the type of dances being held during the event. While not all songs will be liked by everyone, we try our best to come up with a good variety of music for the various dance styles that will be taught during the weekend. The staff then has to ensure that the sound levels are correct, the tempo is right, and possibly cut some of them for length. This is quite the workload, which is why we have the playlist done early on (usually before May), so we will be unable to take requests at the Ball itself. Generally, we have found that the last few weeks leading up to the Black and White Ball sees an overload of requests and suggestions, but unfortunately, we are unable to include some of those songs since it was so close to the event. So what does that mean for you? You should get your requests in early!

This is YOUR chance to give input on what you would like to hear at the Black and White Ball. We appreciate and look at all suggestions, but please remember that, while you make a request, the Black and White Ball staff has the final say as to what becomes part of the playlist. If you feel strongly about your request, please say so and provide support for it. We are looking for all types of music from pop, jpop, kpop, anime, video game, etc. so don't be afraid to offer up any suggestions that you may have.

We would appreciate it if you could link a video or audio clip of the song you're requesting, though it isn't required - it just helps us out a little bit. You may also email us your requests at [email protected]!

We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Thank you!

I don't have a computer so posting audio and videos is hard but any jazz song from the movie Swing Girls might work because it's great for swing dancers. Also any instrumental piece from Hayo Miazaki movies

It's not an anime song, but I'd be thrilled if you played The End Of The Tour by They Might Be Giants. It's pretty romantic, IMO.

Thank you for your suggestion.  If it does not make this year's playlist, we do keep all suggestions for future playlists (only so much room, not everything makes it).

Thank you for that link, I believe there might be one or two songs that could work.  If it does not make this years final list, we do keep them all for future years as well.

Some songs I would like are:

1. Life is like a boat - Bleach (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFXXUv_ywjU

This song I will think will break the ice for most people. The lyrics, "Nobody knows who i really am. I never felt this empty before and if I ever need someone to come along? Whos going comfort me and keep me strong? That would inspire to make someone to go out of their comfort zone and ask to dance. I think this song is best played after a few songs.

2. Shiki no Uta - Samurai Champloo (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sccg1CZzi4

Pretty cool song.

3. Aqua -Aria the animation (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IoVXbILLQA

This song has a happy relaxing taste to it.

4. Your Affection - Persona 4 (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDv7fPjHDxc

Has an upbeat sound to it

5. Venus to Jesus - Arakawa Under the bridge (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqfRIC1N9K4

6. Dango Daizoku - Clannad (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvzCmV3_12c

7. Hey Mr. Music - Miku, len, rin, Luka  (Vocaloid)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4cSCf83gn8

8. My soul your beats - Angel Beats! (Anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIFV8UUs1-c

9. Spica Paid vacation remix - ちびた (Vocaloid) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qVFmCYPpGg

10. Ellinia - Maplestory (MMORPG) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foiD5iCkq08

I feel "Ellinia" would bring the feels for most people because it is a nostalgic music that maplers have gone through.

11. Lahan -Xenogears (Video game) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xWWORjQ2cQ

There is a festive feeling to "Lahan" makes you want to get up and dance. A feeling of joy and happiness.

12. Pursuing My True Self - Persona 4 (Video game) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F-XzhAMFAM

Not sure if all the songs fit the style for ball room dancing feel free to take a look though.

In my opinion, I hope there aren't any songs that are not from anime or video game music. I mean this is an anime con right? We should find music that are from anime or games. We should leave other songs that aren't anime or video games to other events eg. prom or other ball room dancing related events. As for fanime, most people are anime fans and I think most people would want to listen to anime/game music.

Well this is my opinion, if there are going be non related music here are few songs I will suggest.

1. Cherry Bon Bon - Kyary Pamyu Pamyu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AmyrVs8MSc

2. Yume No Hajima - Kyary Pamyu Pamyu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Kog6fJgdAM

3. Candy Candy - Kyary Pamyu Pamyu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoK8DaJRDaM

4. Kiss me (Remix)- Sixpence None the Richer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KknBFN4X1qE

I might post more music, but at this moment I can't think of any more.

I really hope that's not the case. Ever been to last years Sacanime, ALA, formal dances? They played nothing but video game anime soundtracks. It sounded fine for the first 45 minutes but honestly people where not happy. There was a steady line of people asking the "dj" to play something danceable.  After 2 hours there was about 20 or so people out of a packed room of 100+.
Anime/video game songs are great to listen to. That's what they where meant to, but to dance to no, only a few 10% are danceable.

I feel last years B&W ball had a good music selection. A couple of songs where undanceable but over all 80% had that good energy to dance too.  A good amount of danceable anime/video game and radio dance hits.

Sorry if I sounded like I called you out on it Dangs but after my bad experience with those formal balls I do not want that to be the same for this years B&W ball.

I haven't been to those formal dances. I am not sure about Sacanime or ALA, but for Fanime we can actually input what music we want to hear so if there is something we want heard we would post it here on the forums or contact them about it. I know that if random anime/game music were to be played of course not everyone is going to enjoy it, but if we were to choose what anime/game music to be played and have a vote then it will have a better chance of everyone liking it. I know not everyone might not want to dance to certain songs, but I am listing songs that I believe people will like.

There are countless anime or games music that is danceable it is just that they haven't been posted or people haven't heard of it yet D:

The reason why I think Fanime should have all anime/game music is because like I said earlier, if it had the same music that a regular formal ball does, it wouldn't be that special. I mean, when do you get to play anime/game music and people would enjoy and dance to it?  Would your high school prom want anime/game music? Would American ballrooms play anime/game music? I believe not, because most of the people there aren't into anime/game music to enjoy it. Fanime should be different. Majority of the songs should be what their attendees enjoy, which is anime/game music. This is why I like Fanime because we can give our inputs on what songs could be played.

*I'm okay with there being some music that isn't anime/game and I listed one above. I just feel that the playlist should have higher priority for anime/game music and give it more of a chance then other songs that aren't anime/game related.

The reason why we choose to incorporate non-specific anime/video game music into our playlists is due to the many styles of dance (eleven of them!) we provide at the event. That's a really diverse range of dances that requires an equally diverse playlist to support it and make it fun for everyone.

A lot of anime/game music, while great to listen to (and some may even be inspired by a dance like tango or waltz), are not intended to actually be danced to. It is also hard to find the stylistic rhythms of some dances (like salsa, samba, and east coast swing) in just that small niche of music. Every year, we try to incorporate music from our Music Fest Guest (or guests) of Honor, the convention theme, and songs by popular artists in Japan as well as other parts of Asia. Some of our music has been inspired by anime and games as well, like our multiple Super Mario Bros. salsa mixes and our Chocobo cha cha. But because some of our dances are so stylistic when it comes to the music, we must pick and choose danceable songs from other genres to suit the event (like the Japanese version of "Tennessee Waltz" that we used last year).

Because we are also dancing to a mix of ballroom (waltz, foxtrot, etc), latin (salsa, cha cha, etc), and nightclub dances (west coast swing, hustle, etc), it's also nice to mix the playlist up to familiar songs for the dancing world. We try to keep this event as well-rounded as we can and because of this. But due to the sheer length of our event, it's hard to just stick into one niche when we are trying to give attendees a new experience in partner dancing where they may not have otherwise.

The Black & White Ball department in itself is filled with a variety of fans, so we try our best to find anything and everything that is relatable, but can be danced to at the beginner level. Many anime waltzes are Viennese waltzes, not the slow waltz we teach and many other songs are more suitable for the other dances that FanimeCon provides, but not for partner dancing. This is something we work extremely hard on every year and we are still working on finding the right balance that will please every attendee - but still be danceable - when it comes to the music.

I hope this explanation is helpful for you. If you have any further questions or comments about this, feel free to email me at [email protected]. :)

Shiina Ringo and Soil & "Pimp" Sessions - Killer Close Call

Round Table - NatsuMachi
