This event was wonderful last year and we are expecting a great turn out this year as well. We hope that everyone will enjoy the ball and have a great time, so that is why this thread is being posted.

If you have any questions or concerns over your outfit for the Ball, post them here. You can even post a picture of your outfit/cosplay here and we will let you know if it will be acceptable for the Black and White Ball. If you would like your outfit to be a surprise until FanimeCon, you may also send us an email at [email protected] and we will get back to you with an answer as soon as we are able to.

Hi! Can't wait for the ball! I just wanted to double check with you guys (even though it wasn't on the list, I want to make sure), whats your policy on plunging necklines? Its a full floor length skirt but with a plunging top and then a strap structure for holding it up, the plunge is like this:

http://www.hellousdaily.com/dlyhlls/wp-content/plugins/RSSPoster_PRO/cache/3d729_plunge-and-slit-dress.jpg

just no cleavage will be shown

thanks!

ehhh...i would not be comfortable seeing that on the dance floor. if you could have a safety pin to maybe hold it together, that might help a LITTLE...but i'm just not comfortable seeing the with the very real possibility of the dress showing a bit too much skin. i will let rebecca give the official final verdict, but i highly suggest you look at a different dress, or find a way to absolutely positively 100% secure the plunge in the middle.

hope that helps

If no cleavage is shown and you make sure it's secure in order to avoid any unforeseen accidents, you should be good to go! :)

I am sorry these are not attire related questions but since the site isn't up and I don't see info on my questions; here I go!
1: Is there an entrance fee?
2: Will they have someone to take pictures that you can purchase? (like a prom photo)
3: Any rules regarding face/skin paint or horns? (This is mostly directed for Homestuck cosplayers. I am not planning to Homestuck but I have been to other formal dances at cons where these were strictly prohibited)

1. No entrance fee. But you need to have a Fanime badge to get in.
2. Yes. There is a photo both where you can buy photos.
3. No. Ovbious no one wants paint on their dress/suits. As for horns not sure. But given all the times I been to the B&W ball never seen anyone with horns. Dancing with head ware seems uncomfortable.
You can wait for an official answer by a B&W staffer.

The first two answers here are correct.  I just want to clarify the last one for you. We have no rules stating that horns or face/skin paint are not allowed. If it's a part of a cosplay, there should be no problem. When it comes to body paint, there is the large chance of it spreading onto the wearer's clothing or even on their partner, so we just ask that if anyone is thinking about it to keep that in mind. :) We had a couple Homestuck cosplayers last year who just faded their paint down their neck to avoid any problems and it worked fine! :) hope that cleared up your questions!

Wow you guys are the best! Thanks for such quick answers. Again I am not sure what we will do for the ball but if we go paint, we use a latex blend that seals it for several hours and we would also have it fade to avoid such problems as well. Courtesy is the best policy!

I also have a question on the dresses! I have 3 separate designs, one of which I will make for the ball (if its allowed) and I just wanted to run the designs by you before I start making them and have them all rejected.
The links are posted in priority/preference. the first and last design feature skin tone stretch fabric on the midriff, just to clarify.

just gotta say, love the designs overall

in particular for the last design, i'd stay away from it.
obviously we're not opposed to skin showing (as proven by strapless dresses and halter tops and stuff) but ur design seems to take it a BIIIIIT too far.
second design (the green and yellow one) is fine as long as the shortest part of the dress (the front) is below the knees
for the first design, again, if you could shy away from skin tone fabric that'd be great.
i love the design, but see if you can use like white fabric or something. a color that makes it obvious that its part of the dress and not ur skin

i don't know how specific skin-tone-fabric is as far as coloring goes, but anything that has the possible imagery of showing skin, might not be the greatest.

i'll have to let rebecca give her final note for the first design. but i say the design itself is fine. making sure the length is longer than the knees. just the whole midriff thing is kinda throwing me off

hope that helps

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I can find a good selection of evening gowns or dresses for petite women? (Preferably in red!) I've been shopping around locally but all I see are dresses that stop above the knees or long gowns made for a much taller figure. :/

Of the three designs you have linked (awesome designs, by the way), the top two would be preferable. The only thing I could say about the flesh tone fabric over the mid-drift is that, depending on the thickness of the fabric you choose, it could go from looking classy to looking night club-esque. If you shy away from the extremely thin flesh-colored fabric (the kind that looks like there's nothing there, as opposed to the kind that leaves the illusion of it, yet still covers you enough to where it's comfortable for you), you should be good! Feel free to pick from your top two designs! I look forward to seeing the final product at the Ball! :)

I took some time to see if I could find anything. Here are some that I found! Keep in mind, I didn't take much into consideration price-wise, but I did try to find a variety of prices for you. :)

I was wondering if this dress will work under the dress-requirements: http://kuri-queen-of-feels.tumblr.com/post/80341280142/eeeeeeeeeeeeeee-guys-the-corsested-part-is-able-to  Its not 100% done, but this is the ref I am going off of: http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb159/LakuriSyaoran/tumblr_muekjdZ7K91rfe186o1_500_zpsf3a9e69c.jpg
I'm just a little worried about the hem line and the top being against the rules. The hem line on the shorter of the asymmetrical comes just above my knee and I don't know if that is ok or not.(it looks a little more in the picture, but once it is finished, the layers are going to weigh down more). The top just because its completely strapless and lower cut I don't know if there is a rule about that. It's a corset so its won't be sliding down or anything.
It would just be nice to be able to wear this since, hopefully, I'm going to enter the masquerade with it, and I would love to just be able to walk over and join the ball :p

Well if there is no change from last year and the years before, the ball is on Sunday. And if memory serves me correct the time is from 5:00 till 11:00, or was it midnight?
I'm sure it's around that time, but wait for an official say so.

The easiest way I can think of to test this is to put your knees on a chair or your bed (like this). If you see thigh, it'll be too short. If it is just a little bit too short, one solution would be to wear a slip or something of the same color underneath that is just long enough to reach your knees (or you could just tack on an extra strip of fabric to the lining - several people have done that in the past with safety pins or fabric tape). That way it's not any permanent change to your design, but will be easy to go from one event to the other without the hassle of completely changing something.

I'd wait until you're finished with the skirt before testing it and making that decision, though! it looks like, despite the angle, it has a relatively good chance of being approved after being sewn together. Great job with it so far! :)

The Black & White Ball is on Sunday, May 25th from 6:00pm until midnight. It used to go until 11, but we wanted to give everyone who wanted to attend the Cosplay Masquerade as well enough time to enjoy both events. :)
