Hi there!

More information will be coming very soon but Karaoke will be returning in full this year, with all of our contests also making a full return.

Masks will be required in all of our events, even when singing, so please practice accordingly!

Hi! I am new to the karaoke activities at fanime this year and wanted to clarify if my song preference of "Kimi no Kioku" [https://youtu.be/sKddkLqoWLY] from the video game Persona 3 qualifies as an anime song (as well as video game song) if there was a series of anime movies for Persona 3? I would so cut this song to fit the 5 min limit i see in the rules. My other prelim song is also from a video game so I need an "anime song". Thanks!

This will meet the eligibility requirements for our purposes. :)

I have the same question as Sygmus above.

Here's the original version of Simple and Clean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0xbO5LAnjc
And here's the fan instrumental I'd prefer to use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMMbqhztqgY

I can sing to any version of the song, I just like that fan version. If I can use the fan version, I'll bring it on a USB drive. If not I'll just use the instrumental in your karaoke database because there isn't an official instrumental that I can find to download.

I took a listen, and I'll clear this track for the contest. Thanks for checking with us!

Since I always need to be certain, I'd like to know if my songs are eligible.

I'm using this fan instrumental of Kaze ni Naru, but with the lead guitar part taken out. It sounds a lot like the original but I'm unclear if fan songs are okay.
Fan version: https://youtu.be/Jsd0z2M_HIg
Original song: https://youtu.be/NwoDrRCibhA

My second song is kind of a similar situation, it's not the original because I just couldn't find an official instrumental. Instead it's one of those karaoke knock-off versions with an electronic instrument that plays along with the melody.
Karaoke: https://youtu.be/kttyLjX1zLg
Original: https://youtu.be/1DzqhM_NwqM

These are OK - you're good to go! :)

I just have a question? idk if this is where i ask this but since it has to do with karaoke :D
Was wondering about the open mic since you have a list of songs that we could choose from would there be a chance to ask to add a song to your list?

Generally, we would happily take that request in this thread, but this year we have delayed our annual song-adding push a little bit due to external factors. However, please feel free to bring the song if it is not in our database! =)

What is the song you're hoping to have?

For acoustikaraoke, are there amps provided? Or do contestants usually bring their own? Or no amp and play through room acoustics? Asking for acoustic guitar

Quote from: blinkk on May 20, 2019, 04:50:55 PM
Planning on doing Acoustikaraoke for the first time ever. What gear is provided for guitarists? I have a single 12" amp that has built in FXs. If the house provides gear, I'll bring my pedals instead.

Is there a list of gear provided?

Also, how many songs are we allowed to perform? I have 3 anime songs, if that's not too much. :D

Hi all,

We are generally unable to bring music equipment in or out of the Convention Center. Acoustikaraoke is a purely "bring your own gear" show, although we can plug line in to our existing soundboard if you bring long enough cables. We generally just adjust the microphones in the room to suit acoustic instruments. Think of it as an open mic stage with no backline, but a few power outlets. The on-the-fly vibe is a very important element of the contest. =)

Hope this answers your questions!

Since I lost access to a CD burner can I bring my songs on a USB thumb stick?

Yes you may! We prefer USB thumb drives to CDs. :)

If I sing Simple and Clean by Utada in English, can I sing one chorus and bridge in Japanese (like Donald Sings Simple and Clean), or does my whole performance have to be in one language?

This is an interesting case. As long as the lyrics are the official ones, I'll determine that it would be ok to mix them in this way.

We have also made a handy chart that will help you determine which songs are suitable for different events:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jNz-X8BgiqBYdTudAlCjsfYHNnWpIog2

So this chart applies to Fanime as well as AX?

That is correct. Our group maintains the same song eligibility criteria across both events.

Hello everyone.

This is a friendly reminder that the online pre-con signups for the 2018 Karaoke Contest are now closed.

Slots are still available, so any latecomers who would like to participate may sign up during the convention check-in period on Day 1. Please tell your friends!

If you need to make any changes to your song choice, performance order, etc., please do so when you check in for the contest.

The Acoustikaraoke! and Gong Show signups will remain open until the convention, so please tell your friends about these exciting events, and come see us at the convention if you'd like to learn more! :)

Hi Tommy!
Would an mp3 of an off-vocal cover of a Jpop song be an acceptable audio file?

In this particular case, I will say this is allowable.

Hi! We were wondering what the mic situation will be like this year? Will there be any wireless mics, and if so how many?

We will have two wireless mics available, as well as wired mics.

If there is no official English version of an anison, may I sing the English lyrics I wrote myself for the song for the karaoke contest?

Unfortunately, this is generally not allowed (see Song Eligibility, Sec. 3.a.). Limited exceptions are available if no official translation/dub exists and the new lyrics are a translation. If you think this may be the case, please feel free to submit them to me privately for review. However, I would lean towards assuming this example will not be allowed in the contest.

Has anyone actually gotten married/proposed while on stage?

There was a proposal last year during the BW Ball - the groom-to-be contacted us ahead of time to request "Helpless" from "Hamilton" as a dance song, then after the song played, the floor was cleared save for that one couple. We knew we'd get a Ball proposal one of these years! :D

........wellllll they can always get married at the Gong Show.........

Song eligibility question. Magenta by Nano? It's doujin content from Nico Nico Douga but it's in English https://youtu.be/47oXX0N9s-A

This should not be a problem. Thank you for asking, as it definitely falls into a unique and very fun grey area.
I listened to the song, and have determined that it it fits the broader definition of the "Japanese popular music, e.g. J-pop, J-rock, J-electro, Enka, Kayokyoku, etc." category.
So, it is certainly allowed in the contest, although your other song must more specifically fall into the anime song category.
Fun side note: We rewrote the text of that rule this year to better reflect our longstanding interpretation that it provides for indie and new-media examples such as this, which have become extremely common. =)

Thank you!

Always look forward to participating every year!

I have a song eligibility question. In the rules it says the English version lyrics of a song from anime or video games is acceptable but I just want to be completely certain since I've never picked a dubbed song before. Is the English version of "Jump Up Superstar" from Mario Oddyssey acceptable for the contest?

Hi there!

Short answer on this one:

Yes.

We look forward to hearing it! :)

Will points be deducted for having lyrics on your phone/printed? ; A ;

Nope! But this can impact your ability to relate to the audience/"emote," so make sure you are still connecting with the crowd. =)

I put down to perform as early as possible, but could I change that to go as late as possible instead?

I'm David H, singing Go My Way and Moonlight Densetsu.

We will be happy to accommodate the preference change, but cannot make any changes until you check in to the contest. Check-in begins at 2pm tomorrow. :)

See you all there!

(So, I tried to post the signup info here as a reply... but it doesn't seem to have taken? So it will either show up later or it won't, I imagine...)

Apologies for this year's delay! (My forums account... disappeared, I think??)
A new thread is available in the Live Events forum with the rules and signup link. I will also be periodically attempting to answer questions here in the run-up to the convention.

We look forward to seeing you at con!

Hi everyone!

Due to some issues with my previous forums account (it... disappeared??) I was a bit delayed in getting this information out this year. My apologies for any inconvenience.

For reference, the rules for the 2017 Karaoke Contest are available below:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1S4J7hq1GXMOGEOTEQ_wOl1bErx6vXLp8ThstzrQPJ7o/edit?usp=sharing

Please use this link to sign up to the 2017 Karaoke Contest:

For those familiar with our contests, the rules are largely unchanged from previous years, with a slight clarification to the "user eligibility" section.

Good luck and happy singing!
