Title: Music Requests for The 2013 Black and White Ball
Post by: le_momo on November 03, 2012, 06:22:19 PM
Hello, everyone!

Every year, the Black and White Ball staff works as hard as they can to learn and grow from the feedback given by attendees. One of the things I noticed was that, while many people enjoyed the playlist, there were some that felt that some of the songs did not fit everyone's thoughts of what they imagined to hear at a Black and White Ball. So here is your chance! We would like to have your input on the playlist. For those who may not exactly remember what they liked or didn't like about the previous playlists, feel free to look through them below.

2010: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16384.msg425094.html#msg425094
2011: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16384.msg423410.html#msg423410
2012: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,17507.msg444203.html#msg444203

Now, here are some things you should know about the playlist. The playlist is generally a compilation of suggestions from the forums, social media outlets, and word of mouth. The Black and White Ball staff will look through the suggestions to look for songs that have a steady beat to dance to and fit with the type of dances being held during the event. While not all songs will be liked by everyone, we try our best to come up with a good variety of music for the various dance styles that will be taught during the weekend. The staff then has to ensure that the sound levels are correct, the tempo is right, and possibly cut some of them for length. This is quite the workload, which is why we have the playlist done early on (usually before May), so we will be unable to take requests at the Ball itself. Generally, we have found that the last few weeks leading up to the Black and White Ball sees an overload of requests and suggestions, but unfortunately, we are unable to include some of those songs since it was so close to the event. So what does that mean for you? You should get your requests in early!

This is YOUR chance to give input on what you would like to hear at the Black and White Ball. We appreciate and look at all suggestions, but please remember that, while you make a request, the Black and White Ball staff has the final say as to what becomes part of the playlist. If you feel strongly about your request, please say so and provide support for it. We are looking for all types of music from pop, jpop, kpop, anime, video game, etc. so don't be afraid to offer up any suggestions that you may have.

We would appreciate it if you could link a video or audio clip of the song you're requesting, though it isn't required - it just helps us out a little bit. You may also email us your requests at [email protected]!

We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Thank you!
- Rebecca

We do appreciate all suggestions for music requests.  Putting together that massive playlist is not exactly an easy, or stress free, task.

Remember we do have the standard Ball type dances such as Fox Trot, Swing, Waltz, and a few more.

Thank you for your ideas.

Suddenly, a big controversy over this song. It made episode 8 of Girls und Panzer notable, and someone put the song on Youtube. 30,000 views in 3 days. Then Crunchyroll censored the song from their official US version of the anime. Crunchyroll claims it's a rights issue. Intellectual property lawyers have responded. Others are trying to find out who, if anybody, claims to own a war song from 1938 for which the author received a Hero of Soviet Labor award.

Echoshadow,

Thank you for your recommendations.  The staff of the Black and White Ball listens to all submissions and makes the final determination of whether to include them in the final playlist.

Just to let you know it is never an easy process and a song is always left on the cutting room floor.

I have a couple of waltzes to suggest. :)

Waltz for the Moon - FFVIII  (http://youtu.be/dOWdP9RT3Pc)
(I don't think this song has ever been played at the B&W Ball...and I have no idea why not! It's such a classic video game waltz, and since it is in three repeating sections of a minute each, it would be really easy to lengthen or shorten as needed)
Yawarakana yoru - orange peoke (http://youtu.be/zOVxZP7ba8Y)
(I just really like this song...I'm not sure if the speed of it would be suitable, since it seems a little fast for a waltz? but it has a waltz beat and it's really pretty~)

Thank you for your consideration. If I think of anything else, I'll be sure to post it.

Not commenting on your song specifically, but we've gotten a bunch of songs over the years that were more suited to a Viennese rather than a conventional box waltz.

And you guys don't do the Viennese Waltz because of the difficulty, right?

I'm not cool enough to -really- know the difference, but after a quick google search, it seems to be based on the speed of the song? Faster songs are better for Viennese and slower songs are better for box-step waltz? Is that correct?

Would something like this much slower live version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga3CzYJiG38) be better-suited for a traditional waltz, perhaps?

Regardless of what the actual song is (though I'd love for it to be this one, if at all possible!), I'd still love to hear a jazz waltz or two at the ball. :D

Thank you for your consideration!

Nina Star 9,

You are correct.  The reason we do not do the Viennese Waltz is because of its difficulty, its potential for attendees to get hurt (the dance floor gets crowded), and just managing crowd control.  Just to let you know that we have discussed this in the past, and just could not come up with a workable solution.

To everyone else,

Thank you for your suggestions.  Please know that the staff of the Black and White Ball will listen to each suggestion and then determine if it is appropriate for the Ball.

I agree with this, ESPECIALLY Cantarella. But I recommend the Grace Edition of Cantarella since it's really fun-sounding to dance to. :) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmm7mbTRr-k Heres a link to it.) For Romeo and Cinderella, Miku's version would also be nice. :)

Why we don't teach Viennese -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYBwaFkbSdw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYBwaFkbSdw)

Travelling involves rotation.  Imagine a floor full of people rotating at different rates...and not necessarily looking where they are going.

Out of curiosity, at about how many bpm does a 3-count song begin to count as a Viennese waltz rather than a "regular" waltz?

Waltz Song Suggestions:
Don Bluth's Anastasia - Once Upon a December - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpEoMe4a0IE
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (Vladimir Dashkevitch & The Leningrad state philarmony orchestra) - Beryl's Waltz
Tsuritama OST (Kuricorder Quartet) - Tsuritama Jinta - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmHT6WGwsEc

Other songs I think might be fun to dance to at the ball but am far too inexperienced to categorize:
Vocaloid - Rolling Girl - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMDxKRx10mU
Zelda Ocarina of Time OST - Gerudo Valley - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6AGjanaVyQ <-- 10-minute version; I figured it would be easier to cut a long audio track short than extend the short version
Zelda Wind Waker OST - Dragon Roost Island - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXGGvsHq6iA (6/8 song so East Coast Swing maybe?)
Salt-N-Pepa - Push It - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4onJ7Z2MLI

Edit: More songs I thought of:
David Bowie - Just Dance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4d7Wp9kKjA
Baccano OST - Guns & Roses - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F5459jCtuM

I second the request for Romeo and Cinderella by Hatsune Miku! Personally I really like Hanatan's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0t2oO-X41g
I think it might work for an East Coast Swing :)

@PurePlummet - Typical Viennese waltzes are 174-180 bpm.  If you're familiar with music, it is usually written in 6/8 time at a tempo of 29-30 measures per minute, although it is sometimes written as a fast 3/4 at 58-60 measures per minute.

@Akira -

Enchanted is definitely at least a slow West Coast Swing.  Not as good a waltz since it's in 4/4 time.  Lucky is more of a Nightclub Two Step.
