Title: 2011 B&W Ball - Dance Lesson Feedback
Post by: saebel on June 02, 2011, 05:18:35 PM
Hi all --

First, I'd like to thank everyone who attended the dance classes we had before the Ball - it's such a privilege to teach you guys, and incredibly humbling whenever someone says they kept up with ballroom dancing because of Fanime Con. It was especially amazing to see some of you show up after giving blood, and then stay for several lessons.  You deserve a round of applause!

We're very curious to know how you all felt about the classes, and would love to keep improving them so it's a great experience for everyone -- so please help us out with some feedback. :)  What did you like about our lessons?  What would you have like to have had more of?  Less?  Did the "Level 2" (Waltz II, WCS II, etc) classes work for you?  Any other thoughts would be appreciated, too!

Thanks again, y'all!  Hopefully see you next year.

i enjoyed the classes even if i only went to a couple of them
the level 2 classes are definitely helpful for those that already know the dances and what not
i mentioned this before in the feedback for the b&w ball in general
but maybe have more time for private lessons?
because i wanted to take them but i didnt kno what kind of dance to take
and for the tangos, maybe just have the american one
because the argentine tango is kinda hard and not a lot of ppl can get it

otherwise..it was a lot of fun! :D

I really liked the dance lessons, especially at night time, when the instructors were able to teach us more in one session (since I assume there were fewer people).

I didn't realize there were "Level II" lessons, I thought they were all "Level I" on multiple days.  So if I missed Waltz I on Day 1, then I would go to Waltz I on Day 2.  Had I known there were "Level II" lessons, I would have planned my schedule differently.  I don't even recall seeing any listing on the website or printouts with a "II" marker.

As for the location of the lessons, I didn't like it at the Fairmont because it didn't make it easy to "just drop by" and check what's going on.  To make matters worse, if you're a photographer walking around with expensive camera equipment, I had to make the decision of putting away the gear before heading over to the lessons during day time.  Also, the crosswalks take a really long time to change lights.  That easily wasted 20 minutes back-and-forth for valuable lesson time, per session.

Other than that, thanks for providing so many opportunities to sample the dance lessons.  If I go to Fanime again next year, I'll be sure to drop by for more lessons :)

The I and II lesson markers were posted on the B&W lesson schedule website but not on the online schedule, so my friend and I also ended up dropping into advanced lessons. However, I appreciated them going over some basic steps for people who also meant to go to a basic lesson before diving into the more advanced stuff.

I disagree: American Tango, as I recall, was very rigidly defined and thus required more memorization of footwork, whereas Argentine was a little more free-form/improvisational (and thus easier). Could be just me, though, as I am rather terrible at learning and remembering specific footwork as opposed to concepts.
