Faux Noise

If there was point system on the forums, you would lose 10 points for that.

This is an odd proposal...

You want a lockdown con?  Even WonderCon and AX don't need to resort to those tactics.

Is there an actual threat you're thinking about, or just general overreaction to nothing?

Chun-Li the first lady of fighting games
This is essentially correct.  SF2 was 1991.  While there were a few fighting games before them with female opponents in the storyline, I do not believe any of them had a playable female character.

Quote from: Jerry on December 17, 2008, 01:00:09 PM
she IS the original first (playable) female character in gaming history.
This is not correct.  That would probably go to Ms. Pac-Man, 1981.

Of course, if you want to count the D&D style of games where you picked your own character, you could roll back to Ultima I (1980), or early MUDs, or pencil and paper games...

So, yes, determining where the quote belongs is important is reading comprehension.
Peace, out, etc.

So you guys just did it for lulz?

No.  But whenever I need to implement a specific level of restrictions (for example, if I wanted to limit something to reading but not writing in a certain subforum) it's easier to define a special group and manage permissions at that level.

Now that I have a different permission administration set at my disposal, I may or may not continue to make those special groups visible.  It depends how much I read into The Scarlet Letter.

To contribute on topic: I'm not a fan of people who continue to complain about their station in life, yet don't do anything useful to improve themselves.  Yes, dear, I know that your like to complain that your job sucks, but serious, get a hobby or something else meaningful to fill other parts of your time.

Staff & Volunteers / Re: E-mails

There are various and sundry spam checks that we do, like all good MTAs.
However, we do not arbitrarily block domains.

I actually remember seeing some your emails; they were properly delivered to the recipients, so you're ok.

(You'll have to be patient with the reply, but that's something else).

I'm going to lock this thread for now.  After the hotel room pricing has been announced to the fans, I think only then will it be meaningful to ask these questions.

Patience is awesome.

It is a hobby for me.  I gain experience and experiences, especially in working with people.

But, overall, I do my job because it's fun.   I like doing game show, I like being IT.  I used to like being chair.  I like hanging out with facilities, etc.  When this stops being fun, I'll move on.  But for now, the people that I work with make it worthwhile.

Personally, I'd never actually put it on a resume though.  At least, not in the main "work experience" section.

In addition to anything Fanime or the SJCC has to say, there is the larger question.

Forget the con; is it legal for someone to just show up, set up a cart on a street corner, and make/sell sandwiches to sell/give away to the public?

The short answer there is "no"; you'd need to register yourself with the relevant authorities, make sure you have food permits, insurance, etc.  (Yes, most authorities turn a blind eye to small stuff like lemonade stands, but this is a bit larger)

In theory, you could do something like this on private property with permission from the property owner; but that would between you and the SJCC, and it's not really in their interests to permit something like that, unless you pay them.

It doesn't matter if the SJCC will/would not lose business; this line is unlikely to sway the people in change.

Mizuki's out for a few days, so I'll be acting as moderator.

So, as moderator, I can change the rules a little.  But I'll keep them mostly the same.

  • Proper grammar and English are encouraged, especially if you want people to take you seriously.  However, the fact that someone misspelled one word or left out a period or something trivial does not give you the right to be dismissive of their point.
  • Cite your facts and statistics, if you're going to use facts and statistics.  It's okay to go with opinion statements, like, "I feel that the sky is green..." but those are easily attacked.
  • This is a discussion forum.  No one is obligated to reply to any point.  If someone fails to respond to a point, you can interpret it in any way that you want.
  • I don't play favorites.  In fact, I have equal disdain for all of you.
  • Image macros are allowed to be posted only between 4pm and 8pm Pacific Time.  They're a bannable offense outside of that time.
  • This is mostly a discussion/debate board.  There are no prizes if you win an argument, nor are there penalties for losing.  The best thing that can happen is to see a complex issue from more than one viewpoint.
  • This is a board on an internet forum for FanimeCon, a convention about Japanese animation.  Because of this, many forum users do share similar interests, ideologies, beliefs, syndromes, and concepts.  Deal with this.  Also, deal with the notion that "other ideas that belong to people in other states / cultures / beliefs / ideas" may be complete sane, intelligent, and sober and yet disagree with you.
I probably won't jump into any discussions after this point.

Mash that report button if there's any problems.

Normal rules go back into effect after Mizuki's return.

Doing the math, if a couple has sex merely once per week, then they're still statistically likely to conceive within a year assuming "typical use" of all three methods combined.

This isn't true.  If a condom is cited as "97% effective", it does not mean that 3% of women who have sex will automatically get pregnant.  See this link for an example.

If you want to claim that "combining all birth control methods + human foibles" results in an average of "98% effective", that's one thing (although I'd like a citation).  But to claim that "statistically likely to conceive in one year" is outright bad math.

Remember on fanime 2008 there was a song that everyone like. I dont know if everyone like this song. Its from Rosario+Vampire 2 theme song. Here is the website to check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef6lbnNCre8&feature=related

Interesting song.  But as a "theme song"?  I don't know..  There's three reasons:
Quote from: ruby19_4 on November 18, 2008, 07:05:17 AM
um....guys I dont know japanese.
I'm not 100% sure about picking a Japanese song if you don't know what the words mean.  For all you know, the ensure song translates to "Let's kill lots of puppies! Every day!"

Also, and I'm going to just admit a personal bias: it sounds like every other J-Pop OP/ED/IMG song I've heard in the last 15 years.  Not that this is a bad thing, mind you, but it's just not something I'd pick to represent Fanime's unique status.

And the main thing: Fanime is a large >13000 person convention; it would likely be impossible to create a decent song that captures whatever spirit we have.

There's a small chance it might be offsite from the CC/Hotels.

Stay tuned for an official announcement.

We are also planning to launch the official Staff Recruitment website to list all staffing opportunities.

Why is it legal for two people that don't love each other to be married, but two gay people who completely love each other are not allowed to be married?
This wasn't the question I asked, but it leads to an interesting point.

How would you define marriage?  Assuming there are no laws or other factors to the contrary, what would you define it as?
Corollary: how would define the terms "husband" and "wife" under the definition?

Yes, I know Prop 8 passed for various reasons.  I felt that the TV commercials on both sides were disingenuous.
I agree that the commercials created fear and that the commercials were misleading.
That said, most people already made up their minds before the proposition was put on the ballot.

There's a non-trivial portion of the population that chose to define marriage as between "a man and a woman," excluding all other forms.
So, again, I'll ask:  How do you guys define it?   Is marriage important at all?  Should it be?

I'm not saying Religion is bad! Hell, I'm a Methodist Christian.  Anyway, I AM saying, that the Bible AND the constitution in general dose NOT say, "take you your personal beliefs and shove it down everyones throats"
This is fine, and I respect that too.   I respect those who openly dislike religion.

I only hope that there is the same respect for those who are openly religious.

And no, I have no intention of trying to debate religion on the internet.  So I'm just recasting some of the prop 8 debate as a marriage one.

I'm going to do a dodge, before this turns into another "religion = bad" thread.

So, I'll ask a question:

A straight man and a straight woman decide to get married solely for benefits.  They wouldn't have sex with each other.  They wouldn't be chaste; in fact, they'd probably sleep with other people on the side.  They are good friends with each other.  Just not "in love".  But they just want all the normal benefits of marriage.
Should this be legal or not?  Why or why not?  Does the answer change if it's two straight men or two gay men?

NB1: I do not consider true gay marriage directly analogous to this example.  This example as presented solely as a thought example.
NB2: I won't disclose how I voted in this election.
