Title: Post-Con Depression (PCD) How are you coping with it?
Post by: yggdrasilsys on May 29, 2013, 05:39:32 PM
Fanime is over and reality sucks, I miss hanging around cosplaying as my favorite anime/game character in a crowded convention where everyone is doing the same and all is friendly. What is there to do that can satisfy in the same way

I always like to watch all the videos posted to relive the con experience. Also look into cosplay gatherings during the year. There was one in the winter time last year in Christmas In The Park, and also a spring gathering before Fanime started.

After working many many hours from Tuesday Evening - Monday Evening I was ready for con to be over and got over my PCD with copious amounts of sleep.

I'm sorting through the photos I took this year. Not many, but in need of organizing.
Of course, like the other years I've gone, I'm listening to the MusicFest set list playlist I made on iTunes.

Working so much at my day job I barely have time to think about it (and making up the hours I missed Friday).  That, and cleaning up the mess that is the post-con condition of our basement.

Still trying to sleep off the last dregs of what I refer to as a 'convention hangover'- the exhaustion, sleep-deprivation, and soreness from entirely too much physical activity. ;) Thinking of a marathon viewing of one of my favorite anime series to help recover here!

I've got some of the Post Con Blues. I'm starting on watching a couple anime that I haven't seen before (Space Battleship Yamato and Sakura Wars) and looking for new-to-me manga to start. I'm not over it, but I think this will help.

I got hit with it hard. No money to spend on anything, and not being able to go to AX or Sac-Con/Anime like I had planned to makes me more and more like Mr. Ikari.

On the plus side, I am catching up on nerd stuff, like Attack on Titan, going to catch with somewhat old nerd stuff, like Durarara/Baccano, and about to jump into old anime, like Cobra and Harlock.

There is always another anime convention coming up.  Although I have scaled back now, from 2008 to 2010 I attended an average of seven anime conventions a year.

Compared to all other conventions, I do not become depressed after Fanime.  This is because Fanime is four days long.  I always attend the swap meet on day zero.  That adds up to five consecutive days of anime related activity.  Fanime is a very satisfying convention.

At my home town, I serve on the staff of my local anime convention.  This means I attend their planning meetings, once a month.  For some of you, this may be a good way to stay involved with the anime fandom.  You can also learn some skills or acquire experience that will help you develop as a person.

Well it's pretty easy for me. Right before fanime I had to start moving to my new apartment (will not rant about how mad I was) so during Fanime was my "forget about all my worries" time and then returning I had to go back to work Tuesday morning and have since still been working on moving out. So I'm overly busy, too much to do to be depressed about Fanime being over, which is almost sad in itself.

Working tends to drill it out of you a bit, but a lot of introspection about Fanime has ended my PCD with a new lease on life, Fanime is not something constrained to the San Jose Convention center,

^ cheese mode continued

Fanime and FanimeCon can be considered different. Fanime is the union we share through social media and friendly gatherings all year round as fans of anime, hence Fanime. FanimeCon is the actual event.

(That made almost no sense whatsoever)

This year wasn't that good so getting over my PCD was very easy; I'm more dissapointed than depressed.

Besides that, I got work and have to plan for Expo.

I have zero pcd, mostly just sore from all that faceplams due to poor management of fanime.

Then again I don't go to fanime for high quality guests, panels, and video programing. I go to Anime Expo for that.

Working and cleaning up the mess left over from working on cosplays. Not much PCD this year as previous years. Going to load/upload photos, bookmark artists, and any other fanime related activities when I have time. Then, start on my pet projects & watercolors again. And watch/read my backlog of anime/manga.

Trying to catch up on sleep, and getting mentally ready for a work trip next week.  I'm planning out my cosplay for next year, figuring out where I am with my current manga series and anime series.   I hadn't planned on attending any cons the rest of the year except for Kinyobi Con anyway.

Honestly, it's kinda gotta way too big and too corporate. It's lost a LOT of the fan-driven edge it had 10, 15 years ago. Plus since they got both the Anaheim and Long Beach convention centers booked out from under them and they've been at the LA convention center... that's just not really the best venue, IMO. Sure, the area right there has been gentrified a lot, but there's not really sufficient on-site affordable hotel space and once you get a block or so away that area is kinda... crappy.

And people at Fanime complain about 'line con', the year after I stopped going to AX, my sister and her husband reported a massive reg line screwup that had them waiting for upwards of 9 hours in a line over a mile long winding outside the convention center in 90+ degree heat due to shoddy organization. Last I heard, AX has cleaned up badge pick-up somewhat, but that left a really bad taste in their mouths.

I've only heard bits and pieces of the various AX behind-the-scenes dramas, so I can't offer much in the way of intelligent commentary on the alleged corruption, but mostly from my own experience it feels less like a fan event and more like a corporate one. My first year at Fanime (2011) still had that fan event atmosphere; it honestly reminded me overall of my first Anime Expo (1999) in terms of the overall atmosphere. And that's what's kept my sis, her hubby and myself opting to make the 6-8 hour drive to Fanime instead of the hour it takes to get to Anime Expo.

I used to go to a lot of cons since my first Fanime back in '07, but things got expensive and my last trip to AX in 2010 was a bust. So Fanime has been the only con I go to each year since then. I cope pretty well surprisingly, since I can shift my focus onto potential cosplays for the next year, work, school, whatever else is happening in my life at the time. I guess my PCD became manageable after 2010 I believe, since I was getting older and had to shift focus onto other, more important things.

People that never been always say its shitty when in fact its a very great con. Take a look at the guest line ups and they have guest Fanime only dreams of, and a great program schedule that makes you plan out your day down to the minute. As far as corruption well that didn't seem to affect the last 3 years of a great convention. And besides EVERY con has its dirty little secrets imagine how shock you'll be if you knew all of Fanime's dirty laundry.

That's the problem, a lot of people just "hear" about it, if no one was actually there how can you sit and type as an even that actually happen.

Last years pre-reg line was long but it was moving smoothly. I know I was there. I cheek in to my hotel around 3:00 and was having drinks at a bar by 6:30.

While the location of AX is debatable, I have never had a problem with going back and forth to my hotel with the shuttle buses, well after 3:00 am it is an hour wait, but that's understandable. Good thing I could take a taxi anytime I want.

Either way what it comes down to it is another anime convention which means more money to spend/plan. Those that have the means are always envious of those that don't. The end result will always be the same. It either would be awesome, a total let down, or a bit of both.

Cons in general? Usually by ear or from AnimeNewsNetwork.

My upcoming con schedule includes Anime Expo, Kintoki Con, and Japan Expo.

I would someday like to check out AM2 but they're always getting shafted.

Corporate doesn't necessarily equal corrupt.

Injecting some corporate sensibility into Fanime would do it good, in my opinion.

Well, it's not my place to say "OMG NO!" Just that from my own experience (AX1999-2006, and then one-day shopping trips in 2007 and 2008) that the general atmosphere of the convention has changed in a way that was reducing my personal enjoyment at the event. Partly a lack of guests I had any interest in, partly the overall quality of the panels, partly the venue change, and partly the dealer's hall being reduced to only the big vendors who could afford space in there leaving a wide assortment of smaller niche dealers priced out and unable to get in. Really does come down to what you're looking for in a con, I suppose. I like Fanime's hefty bent toward fan panels rather than corporate ones, for instance, which is one of the reasons Fanime has replaced AX as my Yearly Big Con Trip convention.
Title: Re: Post-Con Depression (PCD) How are you coping with it?
Post by: Xanreo on June 06, 2013, 12:23:04 AM
Yeah, it really depends on what your interests are and how you feel about them.

I feel the exact opposite way as in I wasn't the least interested in any of the panels this year at Fanime which is not a negative thing at all since I love just relaxing at Fanime.

However, where are all the news announcements and Industry booths and panels? At Anime Expo.

That's what the Internet is for! ;)

I kid, really. :P It really does come down to what you want from a con. For the industry end of it, AX has definitely got Fanime beat. But I think more on the social/fan end of it, Fanime comes out ahead. Plus, Fanime has the better venue, IMO. Do NOT like the LA Convention Center (or, honestly, the SoCal weather in July versus the San Jose weather in May!)

I may be amiss... but aren't announcements still a bit early? I mean, last year i recall the only real announcement being contest winners for a certain trivia/findthatthing contest.... I don't recall anything else other than that- but if I am wrong, please feel free to ask about whatever it is you're asking about- since I don't recall what it is you're asking for... Personally, I would likle to get daily updates pertaining to fanimecon, but obviously that's out of the queestion- so please tell me what it is you're looking forward to...

As far as PCD is concerned... I'm findng myself more dedicated toward findng out which games are popular...  since cosmicbreak had a booth again this year and aeriagames is still fishing out new stuff... I'm tryuing to keep up to date with them...

Well, I was talking about news in the industry. Good Smile and Production IG have a gigantic presence this year at Expo so it's gonna be exciting to see what comes out.

As for venue, I agree that Fanime is in one of the best locations; I love that it's in Silicon Valley and all the hotels are so close to each other. In fact, when I first attended Expo a few years ago, I was shocked that the hotels were so far apart from each other compared to Fanime.

Although, one good thing about being at the LACC is that it's next to the Staples and Nokia.
The TVXQ concert just happens to be taking place on the 2nd day of Expo this year so I know many fans are ecstatic about the coincidence.
On the other hand, people absolutely hated the coincidence that was the X-Games last year lol.

No PCD for me this year surprisingly. I think I went into Fanime really stressed and tired so once it was over, I was relieved. I had fun, believe me, I did but having to deal with certain things while at Fanime made me feel as if I was working, babysitting and many other things.

I guess the only pcd I'll get is from not going to Otakon, I just saw the guest line up, I'm going to miss out Yoko Kano, and T.M. Revolution. (very sad panda indeed.)

Other than that I'll see what all the fuss Japan Expo is all about.
