Title: 2014 Cosplay Spectacular~! Let's get excited~!
Post by: PrincessSquib on March 10, 2014, 12:52:19 PM
Hello Everyone~!

I wanted to create a thread where entrants for the 2014 Cosplay Spectacular can talk to each other, and share their thoughts on the upcoming event.

What can we expect this year?
Is anyone planning on using the theme to your group's advantage?
What awards are you aiming for?
How much duct tape should you bring backstage in case something goes wrong?!

Feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, horror stories, ect~!

What is the theme for this year?
I'm considering joining the masquerade, but don't have a group or anything.
Does anyone know when the application deadline is btw?

The theme this year I believe is "Fun in the Sun", So I assume, beach themed, summer themed, picnics, warmer weather, cold drinks, ect.

You don't have to do a group, it can be a solo act.

And the deadline for the applications is usually up until a week before the performances. Its posted sometime in early April. Some people even sign up at the convention, though I DO NOT suggest this. There will be no guarantee they will take sign ups at the convention, but it had usually always been an option if there was room.

The FMV theme is "Celebration" and 'beach party' since it's the 20th anniversary of the Con. I wanted to confirm if this was the theme for the Spectacular as well because I don't have a beach theme in mind but I do have a celebration theme in mind. Either way I am going to do the skit I intend! Just curious :3
Also I do not know if you know since the Fanime website isn't up with more info yet but will we be able to request time slots for the skit? Such as being the very last one? Thank you for all you do, Princess.

There are no official request for time slots in Cosplay Spectacular. If your group has special circumstances, there will be a box in your form when you sign up to describe what your special needs are. I would suggest putting anything out of the ordinary in there, and keep in direct contact with the coordinator to confirm your needs. This is the best way to help the Staff and your group get everything you need.  :D

Thanks so much for the response. It's my first time attempting to full cosplay and skit so I want to ask everything now so I am prepared.

Usako makes a good point. Requests for specific times are usually not given, but in the past, from my experience, you can say around what order you wish to go. For example, "I want to go in the begining, middle, or end", but saying "I want to go 11th!" Would be a bit tricky.
ALSO: IF YOU HAVE A MINOR IN YOUR GROUP (under 16), they will put you closer to the beginning. This is from my person experience, as my brother was in my last skit.

UPDATE: Someone announced in this Forum that the Cosplay spectacular sign ups will be the 29th of March.
Its under the Forum Cosplay Masquerade 2014 Registration Info:

Been a while since I even set foot on the Masquerade stage...not since 2009...
So I have a few questions if anyone here knows.

1. Do our performances have to follow the theme that Fanime provides?

2. Are we restricted to ONLY skits or a walk-on? Are other types of performances not allowed; such as a martial arts demo?

If no one knows, I'll definitely email the people in charge of Masquerade.
Just wanted to see if any of the people that have been on stage, knows the answers first.
Hope these questions aren't too improper to ask.
Thank you in advance to anyone answering.

Hi! I can answer those for you.

1) Absolutely not. :D Going along with the theme is a personal choice, I usually don't but I've seen some very successful skits that have been.

2) You are not limited to those two things, think of the two minutes and thirty seconds on stage as any type of performance that you want. There were some great Avatar the Last Airbender skits in previous years that focused on martial arts moves without dialogue, and just used music. Dialogue must be pre-recorded though, and no microphones are given that I know of. Except to the Karaoke winner. My group will be doing a dance, possibly swing dance, or something of the sort. Just using music.

I hope this helped. :3

Going to address several questions at once.

airanimechiic
QuoteWhat is the theme for this year?

As mentioned the conventions theme is 'Celebration' because it's the 20th anniversary of  FanimeCon.  You are not required to use this theme for any of your entries in the Cosplay Masquerade.

CielloRegalo
Quotebut will we be able to request time slots for the skit? Such as being the very last one?

UsakoMinako is exactly right, we do not have reserved ordering, however if you need or desire considerations like being first or last then please Email [email protected] and add it to your submission forms.

Motoko
Quote1. Do our performances have to follow the theme that Fanime provides?

2. Are we restricted to ONLY skits or a walk-on? Are other types of performances not allowed; such as a martial arts demo?

PrincessSquib answered these, but let me add a bit to the official answer, If you are planning to do a martial arts demo you will need to clear and demonstrate any potentially dangerous performances with the weapons master (me) prior to the performance.  The key it to ensure that we have proper medical and safety equipment on hand to keep you and the Masquerade staff and audience safe.

Going forward if for 2015 we will be taking submissions for half time shows, demonstrations and exhibitions.  Rules for that till be posted just prior to the opening of FanimeCon 2014.

So what was your guys' favorite skit you've ever seen? The most memorable?  I recall a few years ago, there was a gay bar skit for Ouran High School Host Club.  It was brilliant.

I remember that one.
They were pretty good.
The one that I will always remember is an RO (Ragnarok Online) skit.
It was very well done.
Would like to see one like that again. =)

The Host Club gay bar was really good as was the Mario YES dance.

gomu gomu no cosplay did a couple good ones. I also really loved the Portal one from last year. Also, it wasn't a skit but they had the opera singer come one year as one of their extra entertainment acts and OH MY GOODNESS she was awesome! Standing ovation!

Was the Princess Tutu ballerina from last year or 2012? THAT was a presentation to remember.

I remember the Host Club "gay bar".
They did a pretty good job I remember that pretty much.
As for Princess Tutu, it was in 2012.
Here it is:

I remember seeing this one as well.
She was magnificent. =)

(I wonder if I can still sign up...I just realized sign up date is a day where I'm abhorrently busy...)

Ah I certainly hope it takes only a few minutes.
Is there anything I can do to prepare what to enter for the sign up form in advance?
This is so I won't feel AS rushed as I would if I had to enter it on the spot.
I read the registration rules and I'll quote it here from MagicMan1525:

Name
Contact Info
Skit Name
Group Name
Any other specifics about your Skit/Walk-on (i.e. lighting, stage ninjas, sound, etc.)
Please be sure to attach your sound file in the email as well so we can get that all squared away early.

A confirmation email will be sent back to you with the forms needed for entry into Masquerade.

So this is what I read from there.
Is this roughly correct?
If it's not, please let me know.
Thank you in advance =)

Its ROUGHLY correct, the sound is usually given to them on the day you sign in, but I hope we get to email it in this year, as well, to avoid losing music.

You should also know your skit members: full names, ages, their costumes, and if they need any special help. And if anyone is under 16, they need to have their guardian sign a waiver, and give it to the desk on the day of your sign in.

Listing stage ninjas is usually on a separate part of the signup page, near the bottom comments. Lighting and sound can have some instructions, but try not to overload them with timing. It can get confusing backstage...

There is also usually space for an introduction, though last year, they seem to have been forgotten... Its a little less than a paragraph you can use to introduce your group. Two to three sentences maybe. This is what the emcee reads, and it does NOT count in your 2:30 time limit. Your time will start after  the emcee ends his introduction. They also announce who was in the skit, cosplaying as what, and who made them at the end of the skit... on occasion. That's why I believe they need the information.

I hope this helped. :3

Well, if I were able to get into performing on stage at Masquerade (with my team or solo...or both..if that's even manageable), then that's what I would look the most forward to.
To be able to share my passion for way I perform and my team...as well as performing WITH my team. =)

Thanks again also PrincessSquib for helping me with figuring out what I need to have for signing up.
If it's not too much trouble, could you list each of the areas I would need to fill out?
I do know that the sign ups aren't up yet and of course it could change from year to year.
If you could, that would be a great help, though I can go ahead and fill out what was already stated below.
I just want to make sure that I don't miss anything.

This is what they had me email them last year:

1) Contact:

email: [email protected]
Phone: (xxx)xxx-xxxx

2) Number of Contestants:

-Miranda
-Zen
-Krysta
-Brittney

-Two Stage ninjas (as far as we know right now)

Total::6

3) Skit Name::;

The Nintendo Burlesque

4) Attach music file (so they can check to assure its pg-13)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was all that was required last year, if you added people, people dropped out, made changes to something, you let them know at check-in.

Yeah I figured everyone was going to be busy.
I do understand and yes it was really nice of them to do that.
I kept it on hand just in case.

As for cosplaying, I assume you're addressing me?
Or a general question to everyone is my second guess.

Hmm...well cosplaying this year hopefully: Miki Sayaka, Petra Ral/Christa Renz, Super Novice from RO, Sheep from TO...and Misaka Imouto 9982 or 10031/32 or 19090.
Already had to cancel doing Sakura Kyouko and Saber...orz.....but I will get around to doing them.
Next year I have something special planned, heheheh~

I have a few in mind. I'll be re-creating my Twilight Princess Zelda Cosplay (profile pic) into a Twilight Princess Sheik, based on a wonderful piece of fanart I found on deviantart. I'll also have my Burlesque Sailor Venus cosplay, and I'm working on A Pinkie Pie cosplay from the grimdark fimfiction known as CUPCAKES. Those will probably be the only three I wear at the con. Though, I'm still working on a way to transform from zelda to sheik...

Sounds great~
Now the question is how to go from Zelda to Sheik...
Maybe a tear-away dress?
Though that would be more expenses...hahaha
But I've seen some incredible things happen especially with those that are professional in what's called "quick change".
Usually something hides them for a moment, then they change clothes in that brief time, seconds worth only to change.
But it is something intriguing that could be interesting to look at.

I wouldn't try to put the hat on during the transformation. I would make it so the hat can be worn underneath the Zelda wig with Shiek's fringe bangs tucked up behind the crown. Maybe even make it so Zelda's wig is attached to and primarily held on by the crown so it can be quickly unclipped and removed.

If it were me, I would put on the turban last like a final flourish after the change is "completed" so to say.
You could keep it somewhere in like a pouch on your back or in your waist or somewhere hidden and whip it out to put on.
I would say it wouldn't be prudent to have the turban under the wig though...

Yikes 10 costumes?
I can't fathom that.
I already had to drop 2 that I was planning to do due to time and expenditures...which sucks, but it'll be alright for me I suppose.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. I was thinking a tear - away skirt, with the sheik costume underneath. And putting the hat on... But how to do it fluidly..... ugh.

Heres the picture that I was referring to. Do you think that it would still apply?

Oh, I've never seen that version of Shiek before.

Sounds great~
Now the question is how to go from Zelda to Sheik...
Maybe a tear-away dress?
Though that would be more expenses...hahaha
But I've seen some incredible things happen especially with those that are professional in what's called "quick change".

I have so many things to prepare for. I'm also participating in the chopped cosplay event. Has anyone seen it before? It is a ton of fun. A bit on the stressful side, but fun all of the same.

Always seems to be a lot to prepare for in terms of cosplay.
There just seems to be a lot that goes into it, the clothes, the make up, integrating with the character.
And of course many other things that come into play.

Chopped Cosplay huh?
I've only heard about it.
Never really participated...I'm not one that really likes to stand out when cosplaying, but strangely enough, I like performing...hahaha, a little contradictory I realize.
Hope it'll be a fun event for you.
If you'd like, I'll be performing for the Shingeki no Kyoujin Gathering with my team, PrincessSquib.
If anyone would like to come and watch, we would gladly love to see more people there.

Which makes me wonder, what are you going to do on stage?
(Yes I know probably a secret~ ^_~ hahaha~)
Still wanted to ask =)

It's no secret my dear! We're going to rock the stage as group#5, with double the people as last time. Our fabulous lungi will be returning as Sailor Mercury. And we have a lifeguard as Tuxedo masque. He may or may not have a shirt on.... probably not.

The best part is that when all lights are on you, you can only see the first row of people. So there's less stage freight. That was a big issue for me two years ago.
Title: Re: 2014 Cosplay Spectacular~! Let's get excited~!
Post by: Motoko on April 24, 2014, 12:11:19 AM
Ah I see.
I've been on the big stage before myself but the rest of my team has not.
But they're still excited regardless.
I'm sure the rest of my team has done like other stage performances before so probably not as bad as I think it'll be.

Stage fright and public speaking is the most common fear.
Because we don't know how people will react.
But I found that I will do my best, for myself and for my team so that they and the audience will enjoy and appreciate it =)
It also helps to keep your eyes in the distance on the exit sign (as I tell people that are new to performing).

I know I'm certainly happy to be back on the big stage myself~ =D

I'm excited about our routine in general. Last year, when we did Nintendo burlesque, I was the only NON-Dance Major in our goup. I felt as graceful as a sandwich.

Being as graceful as a sandwich is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard XD

I remember from doing our skit back in 2010 that as well as the first few rows, I could see all the cell phone lights and stuff, which I thought looked pretty cool XD  I'm excited to be on the huge ass stage again, even if I'm goin' it alone. Still debating over my audio though. To make it a short skit that probably won't make any sense to people or not XD
Title: Re: 2014 Cosplay Spectacular~! Let's get excited~!

Kuri - haha so that depends on the skit itself and if people get the references.

But in any case I'm sure it'll be fine.
I just hope everyone has planned things out.
I wonder how some people do so many cosplays during a con...
Make up and getting the clothes on quickly and such for different characters.

We get a hotel, or wake up at the buttcrack of dawn. I usually make my cosplay fairly easy to get into and out of, you never know when you're going to have to use the restroom, and cant fit in a stall.... ugh

Yeah, sounds about right.
I have a hotel room, but it's the back and forth and hopefully there's still time and such.
And very much yes, cosplay that's fairly easy to get in and out.
I think my cosplays this year are relatively easy.
So that'll help.
Have to figure out how to do Saber (from Fate/Zero/Stay Night) though, but not until next year or something.

@Motoko: I'm stuck between the blue with iron plating, or white with iron plating. I want to make more armor like my Zelda armor. I just haven't had an opportunity...

I also find myself wanting to wear more than one costume a day. I just might this year, have an awesome one during the ay, and a more comfortable one at night.

I've got my own cosplay woes going on as well...
Really is time to get down to business and get everything done.
I have paperwork to address for some stuff too, like Masquerade...just things on administrative side for my team.
But we always seem to pull through.

I'm curious if anyone is going to be using the preparation stage that's at the Fairmont.
It would be nice to meet all our fellow performers~ =)

Just so you know the panels will be in the Fairmont this year. You should come check out our Attack on Titan themed panel (Attack on Fanime: Humanity VS Titans) from 9am - 11am on Saturday if you have time (and can wake up early enough, I'm calling it Attack on Morning). I'm gonna be Sasha and the girl who modeled Olimar for us in last year's Chopped Cosplay competition will be our Armin.

I know I do...
Especially this year for my team's performance....
I'm just nervous about the cosplay and if we can do it right, etc, etc which I'm sure you guys know about too. ^^;
But still underneath all that, is some excitement for performing. =)

@ PrincessSquib - yeah I am...and maybe a couple other administrative, but not the whole team.
Some of them are younger so they can't stay without parents permission and well it's up to the parents at that point.
So just myself and a few others.
But it'll be fine.
Definitely my team will make use of the practice stage in the Marriott ballroom.
We'll be there as much as we can, hahaha~
I assume you and your team too, Squibs?

Yes. Though, 6/7 of us go to san jose state, just down the street from the convention center, and three of our performers are dance majors. They have access to some of the dance rooms, we've been practicing a bit. we'll probably use the mock stage once or twice.

It did actually, on page 8 of the pocket guide they list times for many of the major events through the weekend including all events happening in the Civic Auditorium. "Cosplay Spec." was 5 - 8 on Sunday.

p.s. you can also look for the long line across the street from the con center on Sunday and that will be for the Cosplay Spectacular.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't really complaining about the line. Once they actually start letting people into the event the line moves pretty fast. It's just that people get in line 2 - 3 hours before the event is planned to start. So unless you plan on letting people into the event space 2 - 3 hours ahead of time I'm not sure what can really be done. And honestly I've never had a problem waiting in line for the Masquerade myself as long as I happen to be in shade, and there is quite a bit of shade on the side of the building that we line up at. Masquerade line is kind of a tradition, I meet new people and usually bring my lunch/dinner to eat in line and sometimes a new manga I picked up in the dealers hall. It's one of the few opportunities I take to just sit and chill. On the other hand, since the masquerade is still pretty early in the evening I can imagine that people in heavy costuming and makeup might have a harder time of waiting in the afternoon heat (I tend to be sensible about my costume choice on this day). Also, I sometimes wonder if the line is a deterrent to some people seeing the event. They might see the long line and think that it will fill up before they can get in or that it will be over crowded.
