Hi CeruleanRogue

QuoteWhat about foodstuffs?  Will we be able to bring snacks or other munchies backstage with us?

Yes you may, the only thing I ask is that you make sure they can be kept under control and that nothing spills.

We will be providing some snacks in an unofficial capacity, there is a concession contract with the hotel and with the civic that limits what can be provided or from whom, so I am limited in what I can say.  However if things magically appear, well theses things happen...

QuoteDo you know what time on the 29th registration should be opening?

It should be midnight, I will verify that with IT to confirm.

Hi Hardogay,

QuoteInclude Hardogay? because I know there there is a fine for me as that character but I would very much love to participate.

The outfit itself I do not think it too much of an issue, its basic fair for those who have walked through the castro on a Friday night.  The real question is the actions and moves.   If you were to go on stage pelvic thrusting the air, other cosplayers, ext then thats a bit too sexually explicit.  If you were to come up with a skit in which the viewer would have to know the character or that was filled with in-house jokes then I can see it passing the bar.

I have received requests to have a separate, 18+, masquerade event that would allow for more explicit acts and costumes, including burlesque. I am still mulling over how to manage this and build a request for resourced for the 2015 convention.

I would recommend sending me an email with a description of what you are planning on doing and we can see where we can meet a happy middle ground.  [email protected]

Hi CielloRegalo

QuoteDo the rehearsals have to be IN cosplay? I will probably want to wear other cosplays on rehearsal days.

No, you can rehears in what you feel works for you.  Last stage will have your sound and video played to work out any kinks in the stage system and the MC's pronunciation of your entry.

QuoteAlso when (if we do) need to have our cosplays for the masquerade approved?

Approval is only required for weapons acts and anyone needing special considerations from the contest rules.  You are however required to drop by and check in with the masquerade before the event (see rules for exact times) or your entry will be dropped.  This is so we can check paperwork, ensure you have the latest information and do your official photography.

As soon as you enter you get a contestant number for your group.  When we hit 55 entries then people go on the waiting list.

QuoteI really apologize if it is stated above. I read it all through but I have some issues remembering, especially if it isn't super specific. I appreciate your help.

No worries,

Hi bisouspapillon,

QuoteIf our group has won an award at Fanime before (which hasn't based awards on skill level in the past), does that qualify as us winning an award in the "open" category at a convention before? By most standards I'd consider us journeyman.

If it was best in show I would lean more toward making it an open category, everything else is fine.  To explain the logic behind the system its designed to promote people to keep evolving their skills and moving up as they become more experienced.  Another consideration is that if you have 3 novice people and 2 journeyman crafters, if they work on their own outfits, do the bulk of their own work then work then they, ethically, entering as a novice entry is fine. However if the 3 novices are just actors and the outfits are being made by one journeyman costumer then the entry should be a journeyman entry.

If I feel anyone is sandbagging I will just have a chat directly and clear things up as needed. Generally this solves most issues.

This = Yes~!
Totally will make use of this (if I sign up...there are some things I have to address with the staff of Masquerade first though...)
But hopefully will be able to use and see this.

Hi, I got your PM and will respond shortly.

Also if there is anything people want to have added (within reason, no male maid requests please), I am happy to entertain the possibility.

Hi Alex Of Hyrule,

QuoteOnline registration will be put up with the full website launch correct?

We are taking an interim step to ensure that registrations can happen on March 29th.  So hell or high water, we will be taking registrations for the masquerade.

Hey Guys,

I was considering entering the masquerade in 2014 with a skit that utilizes a video in the background. But I can't seem to find anything on youtube with a group actually using a video. Has anyone done it? How does it work out? Is there a video I can watch so I can get a better idea?

Thanks for the help!!

Just catching up on this.  Do you want to have a back projected screen directly behind you or your group on the stage?

I have been considering adding this as we have 49' 9" x 30' opening, this may be a tricky issues.

Big Event Showcase / Your First Masquerade
March 18, 2014, 01:36:35 PM
I want to start this thread to both encourage anyone who wants to enter into the competition for the first time.

Some food for thought:

  • What music would work best to display your costume?

Stand back from a mirror 20 feet, how does your outfit look?  Can the audience see you

Write your dialog (if any) down

determine if your entry is a walk-on (You strut your stuff on stage and then off) or a skit (acting out a scene or with other members of your team)

How do you determine *who* you are playing.  You want to embody the essence of your character.  How do they walk, stance, facial expression.

Please feel free to discuss ideas, ask questions and get advice.

QuoteSo, if we wish to run a little longer, we should run it by you? How much longer would you allow?

Like most things its a judgement call, however I really can't see running a skit running much longer then 4 minutes, regardless of how good it is because it will back up the competition.  I would advise that if your crew has a skit that is considerably longer then this, to perhaps send in a application to be part of the half time show for FanimeCon 2015.

Hi PrincessSquib,

QuoteIs there time for practice on Sunday?

Yes, there will be same day rehearsal times on the actual stage in the San Jose Auditorium starting at 1:00pm up until we let people in at 3:00PM. If you need earlier or private practice times the Willow Glen ballroom will be available upon request.

Hi all,

To address a few questions here.

We renamed 'cosplay spectacular' to 'cosplay masquerade' in order to remove confusion between regular Cosplay events and to bring it more inline with the larger convention norms.

In addition our intention was to have the new web site launched in November of last year, however there were some technical difficulties. Going forward you should be able to submit masquerade entry requests 1 month after the Convention for the following year.  At this time submissions will open on March 29th.

Rules have changes have been made so please review.

If you have any questions please feel free to update this or make a new thread.

Going to address several questions at once.

QuoteWhat is the theme for this year?

As mentioned the conventions theme is 'Celebration' because it's the 20th anniversary of  FanimeCon.  You are not required to use this theme for any of your entries in the Cosplay Masquerade.

CielloRegalo
Quotebut will we be able to request time slots for the skit? Such as being the very last one?

UsakoMinako is exactly right, we do not have reserved ordering, however if you need or desire considerations like being first or last then please Email [email protected] and add it to your submission forms.

Motoko
Quote1. Do our performances have to follow the theme that Fanime provides?

2. Are we restricted to ONLY skits or a walk-on? Are other types of performances not allowed; such as a martial arts demo?

PrincessSquib answered these, but let me add a bit to the official answer, If you are planning to do a martial arts demo you will need to clear and demonstrate any potentially dangerous performances with the weapons master (me) prior to the performance.  The key it to ensure that we have proper medical and safety equipment on hand to keep you and the Masquerade staff and audience safe.

Going forward if for 2015 we will be taking submissions for half time shows, demonstrations and exhibitions.  Rules for that till be posted just prior to the opening of FanimeCon 2014.

Et al,

A small typo on the date its Sunday May 25th 4:00pm.  I have corrected the mistake.

To clarify a new link will be on the main web page for FanimeCon on March 29th which will have the forms to register for the Cosplay Masquerade. You will be sent back your entry number, this number is how we track you through the process and will not change.

In addition we will have information on the facilities, judges, schedule, twitter feed and emergency contacts.  For now I am more then happy to answer any questions you may have.

QuoteYeah - 30 seconds to set yourself up, 2:30 Max for all skit and its content. They will cut you at 2:30 if your music keeps running passed the time limit. I would pay $200 to go back to 3 minutes. Cutting that 30 seconds has been terrible for skit building for us
.

Hi UsakoMinako,

The change was done to because some act were running far to long for the content they had.  Like all rules, exceptions can be made.  If you come to the Masquerade office in the Marriott's Willow Glen I ballroom and run through your act.  If your longer presentation is compelling I will happily make the exception.

Like most of the rules, they are a compromise between the logistics of running the show, the entertainment of the audience and being fair to the rest of the contestants.

Introduction
FanimeCon has made a few changes to our system of judging to provide a more diverse and competitive field for our contestants

Awards
There are two categories of awards that are judged separately --- Craftsmanship and Performance. You or your group can possibly win awards from both categories. We divide our competition into three divisions: Open, Journeyman, and Novice.
1.   Open Division: Any competitor may enter in the Open Division.
2.   Journeyman Division:
•   Professional costumers cannot enter the Journeyman Division.
•   If you have won a Best-in-Show major regional competition, you cannot enter in the Journeyman Division.
•   If you have won any award in the Open or Master Division at any other major convention, you cannot enter in the Journeyman Division.
3.   Novice
•   Professional costumers cannot enter the Novice Division.
•   If you have won any award at a major regional competition, you cannot enter in the Novice Division.
•   If you have won more than 3 awards at prior FanimeCon Masquerade or other regional conventions you cannot enter in the Novice Division.

Cash awards:
•   Best in Show $600
•   Best Craftsmanship $200
•   Best Novice category $100
•   Best Journeymen category $100
•   Best Open category $100
•   Best Original Design $100

Craftsmanship Awards
Individual Craftsmanship Awards can be won by a single person (not a member of a group) or by a group member being judged as an individual. For specific information on Craftsmanship Judging, see the rules below.

Hi Sakaki

I just volunteered that day at 4:45, so I am unaware of much  the background. I did try to manage as best I could to keep communication going, get water for the contestants and to keep everyone safe.  I however as a (I'll be it temporary) member of the crew, personally apologize if I let you guys down and I hope to see you next year.
