Last year it rained a little in the morning and put a damper on the festival...  because of it, not too many Cos-Players showed up...  Excluding Animemyu, I counted 12 all together...  I'm hoping for more pleasant weather and a larger showing of Cos-Players this year... More Cos-Player's in attendance shows interest, and with this interest I'm hoping to get the festival planners to do more activities...  I mean aside from FanimeCon's participation in the Children's Activity Zone.

On a related note... I have a question, "Anyone out there (San Jose and neighboring cities) do 'Period' Cos-Play?"

I'll be volunteering here-and-there at the festival... Especially in the Children's Activity Zone... I won't be able to meetup with any of you, but I'm sure our paths will cross.

I was looking into planning a theatrical cosplay project for this festival, but no one here is interested in 'Period' Cos-Play... Well, there's always next year.

What do you mean by 'Period' cosplay? Do you mean from an anime that is set in a different time period, like feudal Japan as opposed to present day?  e.g., Peacemaker vs Deathnote?  And not fantasy or sci-fi settings?

'Period' Cos-Play is a seperate category from 'Anime', 'Game' or 'Tokusatsu' Cos-Play.  'Period' (historical) Cos-play is more like the Renaissance Fair.  You can choose to be a historical figure or create your own individual character... and through acting, interact with event visitors.  Characters can be, nobels, warriors, religious worshipers, townspeople, geisha, gamblers, machi-yakko, kabuki-mono... and more.

Well, just about one week out from festival day...  The upcoming week is going to be a HOT one.  I keep monitoring the weather forecasts and hope the Hot weather dosen't overlap the festival...

I hope many of you can attend, Cos-Play or not...  Hope is all I can do for now.

I HAVE TO Cos-Play... My commitment made to the Spirit of Japantown Main Chairperson, Kathy Sakamoto four months ago.  I'll be wearing a 'Period' Costume... It's more weather friendly... If it were going to be cooler, I would consider wearing my only 'Anime' Costume... But It's all black and I don't feel like roasting in the late-summer heat... ;)  San Jose Nihonmachi is a nice little community, and their festivals provide a good place to meet new people and learn different things. I hope you're all able to spend some time here.

We could meet up at the Fanimaid booth, if there is one. I'll scout the location and I know Barnes has my phone number, so he can contact me if he sees it 1st. I'll probably be getting there like around noon or so, so I guess an hour later would be fine, like around 1 p.m?

@Oniko: I hope You can come. I haven't seen you in a while hehehe

If so, say hi... If you wave and I don't see you, It's because I'm not wearing my glasses... Just keep trying...::)

*** Special notes to those driving in
- Local parking will be scarce, if not non-existant, later in the day.  Public transportation is recommended, but if you should choose to drive in you might have to park a few blocks away and walk in.  I sometimes park near an elementary school on Mission St and 4th Street, and walk south on 4th St. two blocks to the westside of SJ japantown... I wish you luck!!!

- Be mindful of parking regulatory signs (i.e. 2-hour limit)... Parking Control will enforce parking limits on Saturdays.

- Following roads will be closed to through traffic from 7am-7pm:
 Jackson Street : Between 3rd St. --- 7th St.
4th St., 5th St. and 6th St.: Between Taylor St. --- Empire St.

Question? Why are you showing K-On in the kids room? It's not exactly a kids cartoon(far from it actually).

And why show Zan for Zetsubou sensei. The series was never released in America, so wouldn't you want to show S1? If they're watching Zan, it assumes the watchers have seen S1/S2/OAVs prior so A LOT of the jokes as well as plot devices will completely go over the heads, to an already incredibly hard to understand series.

K-ON as kids anime... I think you should screen first before throwing stuff up.

In other news, scorching weather reaching 92 degrees to be expected...yay

well lets see here,
k-on in the kids and why
1. k-on is a popular anime and the time we plan on showing it most of the kids will have left (probly 4pm)
2. theres really nothing bad in the ser its a fairly innocent anime like lucky star

Zan for Zetsubou sensei why screen it
main reason the other ser to Zetsubou sensei have been out for a long time already. plus like you said Zetsubou sensei make no sence so what would showing it from the start make any sence for.

Here are some things why I feel that it should not be in the kids section, even if kids have left after 4pm. Ep1 has the DMC reference, although it's not particularly bad at all, it already sets the tone that they're making a ref on an anime that shouldn't even be near kids. There's always the popular Mio "exploitation" aka breasts, Sawako's crazy character, and pretty much generally every theme in the show no kid will get (because the moe stuff is generally an older person kind of thing.) I can go on, but I think you should get the point. And for the Zetsubou Sensei, then why show it if no one will get it? Get something else.

main reason the other ser to Zetsubou sensei have been out for a long time already. plus like you said Zetsubou sensei make no sence so what would showing it from the start make any sence for.

K-On isn't exactly innocent, but besides that point... it's not geared towards kids in anyway shape or form. The jokes and the appeal are very geared towards older teen men. It's a moe anime, in the same sense that Ichigo Mashimaro is. There's nothing directly bad, as in, there's no violence, sex, or the such... but the humor and mentallity are for an older group.

As for zZetsubou... you realize that you're basically saying. "Well the first series is kinda old, and no one is going to understand it anywas, regardless of what part of it we show, so who gives a damn what the audience watches, nor if they get it, can follow it, or anything at all.

You're telling the audience, you don't give a damn what they think, you don't give a damn what they might enjoy, and are putting up something because "you want to put it up" and for no other reason.

Why even bother showing it at that point? There's 39287429385798436 other things you can show, that the audience might actually understand, or even... enjoy?

Jerry... you ralize I'm friend's with a lot of staff... and posting on facebook about this isn't the most intelligent thing to do.

As for "when to" and when not to... this seemed more apparent that it was a time to.

I'm wondering more why you're so offended that I pointed out how your choices are rather flawed, unless you seem to be realizing that what I said is rather true, you really had no reason to be offended. But whatever.

And no, I'm not going to the fest tomorrow. Jun and I are going to visit my family this weekend. Feel free to take it up with Mizuki. I'm sure he'll take notes for me and he can reppeat it back to me later.

Anyhow, questions for those going to Spirit of Japan, as eGaming co-head, though space is limited, what games would you like to see?

Hey, If everyone dosen't settle down... I'll get >:(

My words may not have much weight here... They may even fall upon deaf ears, but here it goes...

I'm not familiar with K-on or any of the other anime mentioned prior... I really haven't viewed a complete series since '85...  BUT, I don't want a repeat of what happened at last year's festival...  A mother dragged her two young kids out a video room showing Soul Eater... and she was a bit pissed that no one was watching the entrance and allowed her kids to watch the show...  I overheard her complaint (Cos-Play has it's advantages) last year and I did't take this complaint very well  because it reflects upon the whole Japantown community. I reminded Chairperson Kathy S. about this 3 months ago, and suggested improvements... I see little/nothing has been done.  Otaku God, is the one overseeing the Video rooms, so he sets the programming...  One questionable video selection will not end the world...  What titles he selects to show reflects his judgement... What is allowed to be shown reflects the Festival Committee's judgement... The rest remains to be seen.

The Spirit of Japantown Festival is supposed to be a family oriented, community sponsored event and should be planned and executed as such... I spend the better part of the day interacting with children, families and tourists... This is what I do for the festival... I challenge others to help do the same in finding ways to give back to the community...

Now, since I've been looking forward to this event since New Years...  I'm going to enjoy it as much as I can... Because, who knows, I can lose my life at any time... And it won't come back like in all your Anime.

Besides the mentioned Melty Blood, what games would you be interested in?  I will take a look at finalization before leaving from Sacramento.  If you reply before 7:30 AM or so, I can probably post a list or PM you the games, whichever is more convenient.

We do have Capcom Vs. SNK 2 and Guilty Gear Accent Core.  KoF 98 is uncertain.

We should also have SF Anniversary edition as well and a couple of other fighters.

I'm happy the two of you enjoyed the event and I hope many others were able to enjoy it too.  It's funny, in 2008 we had rain... In 2009 we had heat... Anyone want to guess what we might have in 2010?

I'm also glad I'm the only one here who came down with heat exhaustion... Long story, but it ends with you all saying... Baka!!!!!

Hot as hell working at cafe again, but overall it was alright. Definitely had a lot of attention this year. Also, idle conversation in Children's video screening room near closing time was amusing. Highlight of the day was seeing loli jailbait joining us maids coloring and recognizing Haruhi & K-ON references. I was impressed, yet worried about her future. ww

PS: K-noms--Quality children's programming.

Despite the dreaded heat, the event was quite fun.  Got there at 10 AM.

Maid Cafe was interesting.  This is the first time I ever went to one.  Hopefully, none of us caused any disturbances while on break with stuff like funny pictures, Tentacle Grape bottle, and free Venoms.   :P

Food was good.  Forgot the name of the dish I ate there.

For those who went to eGaming, thanks for stopping by.  That was a very small sneak peek on what to expect for FanimeCon's eGaming.

= = = = =

See ya guys at Yaoi-Con, for those who are going.  ^_^

This year's Spirit of Japantown Festival had no official Cos-Play event, but to my apperciation, more Cos-Players showed up this year than last year.  If interest grows among Cos-Players to attend events in San Jose Japantown... Cos-Play activities could be incorporated into future festival plans.

Again, I can never say thank you enough to those Cos-Players, Maids and Goth-Lollies that braved the heat to showoff their costuming skills.

To all,

I apologize for this late update, My health has been going up and down, and I forgot my 13 character password to get into my account... Oops.

I wanted to let you all know that the festival did exceptionally well this year and the preliminary totals show that we are in "The Black."   In the next couple of months, planning for next year's festival will begin.  There is always a need for volunteers so, if any of you would like to volunteer, the contact information link is below:

http://www.spiritofjapantownfestival.com/contacts.htm

lastly, to all of you that attended the festival, please feel free to post what you liked and didn't like about the festival... PROs and CONs... Items of interest...  I'm interested in knowing how your visit to San Jose Nihonmachi went.

Sincerely,
Jidai Geki

I guess the festival was "Perfect" since there are no further replies to this post. :P

San Jose Nihonmachi festivals would love to host Cos-Play events, but the lack of interest among Cos-Players, even the serious ones, confounds festival planners.  So, my question to all of you is...

What would Cos-Players be interested in seeing or doing at a Nihonmachi Matsuri (Japantown Festival)?

Heh I wouldn't say it was 'perfect'
It was a bit too sunny and hot out.  I expect you to do something about that next year.  :-\

The remark "Perfect" was a bit of sarcasm on my part because no one was responding to the feedback request... That aside...

Sorry, We can't control the Bay Area weather pattern...  I periodically monitor this thread and post information when available.  I noted that the weather forcast for that weekend was going to be on the warm side and that those attending should dress appropriately... I was wearing a period costume and wasn't hot at all.  Any recommendations you may have I be happy to forward to the event planners, else...

I will forward a request that more shaded areas be in place for festival attendees.

well, from past experiences of trying to organize cosplay events, I would always be told that cosplaying might not be respectful to the culture.  So maybe if a cosplay event or contest were on the page of the festival it would encourage more cosplayers.

Lady Hoshi-sama... Ohisashi buri desu ne!  ;D

I have seen this issue from both sides and here's the circluar problem...

Festival Point-of-View:

SJ Nihonmachi would like to host cosplay events at their festivals, BUT without a show of interest  in the matter, it will remain a thought.

Cos-Player Point-of-View:
Why should we attend if there are no events or contest, and people look at us like we are being disrespectful.

Currently:
Most of the individuals on the festival planning committees don't know how to appoach the Cos-Play issue and are willing to welcome volunteers to help them coordinate events.  I've been volunteering for 3 years now (Nikkei Matsuri, Obon and SoJT) and they appreciate the cos-play ideas I've given them to set our festivals apart from other Bay Area festivals.  Most of them would work if I had enough committed individuals.

As for Cos-Play being culturally disrespectful to the Japanese...?
One has to remind those offended, mostly Westerners and the ill informed, that Cos-Play is a form of performance art that found its rise in a Japanese Sub-culture.  That it tests one's artistic ability to reproduce fashion/technical design from what is seen in Japanese (Or other cultures) media arts or history... But IT is Japanese.

One thing you might want to consider is checking out sites like Cosplay.com and others.  There have been plenty of gatherings and organized events set up there, like the SF Japantown Christmas gathering on 12/12 (originally to be held at Golden Gate Park, but moved due to weather), the Christmas in the Park gathering on 12/5, the Fall gathering in Vasona Park on 10/17 (which I helped organize), the Summer gathering in Kelly Park on 8/15, and plenty of others.  You'd likely get a lot more interest and input.

I've been to Spirit of JapanTown for the last 2 years, but I disappointed to not see any cosplay events this year. Stage Zero did some fun interviews and games in 2008, so if there were more events in the festivals for cosplayers, the overall festival would be more enjoyable; not just for those dressed up, but the families~

I dance at Obon every year, but if there's cosplay events throughout the year, I'll make sure to come to San Jose more often!

StormFalcon,
Thanks for the info and I'll keep it under consideration.  Posting info for gatherings and contests seem simple, so we were looking for something a step higher entertainment wise... Things not seen or done at any other festivals... We need people to actively sit on the festival planning committees to coordinate Cos-Play events... These people are hard to find as are Cos-Players not limited to popular anime.

Subject aside, any 'Period', 'Live-Action' or 'Original' Cos-Players' out there?

Mochisnack,
Domo Arigato Gozaimasu, for attending our Matsuri and showing support for San Jose Nihonmachi...  I apologize for the inconsistancies in our festivals and hope to change this in future events.

I know firsthand how Cos-Play can make a festival more enjoyable for families... During SJ Obon 2009, I was in Edo period Cosplay.  What was supposed to be 4-hours of Cos-play turned into 12-hours on Saturday and 8-hours on Sunday.  I was there unofficially at the festival. Locals and visitors kept complementing me on my attire. It's Cos-Play???  I met visitors from around the U.S. and the world... I entertained kids (With stories and games of Cho-Han Bakuchi), answered questions, guided tourist and had the most photos taken of me, ever.  The number one question asked was, "Will there be more costumed people?"  I replied, "I don't know... I was the only committed one."  This was the best use of Cos-Play I could ever have thought of... To use Cos-Play to help others.

I've contacted all of SJ Nihonmachi main Chair-persons during the last festival season... Nikkei Matsuri (Mr. Hayashi), SJ Obon (Mr. McClure) and SoJT (Mrs. Sakamoto)...  They all had a positive response regarding Cos-Play during their events... They just expressed a need for volunteers to coordinate the projects.

As a side note, only 'Period' Cos-Play would be considered acceptable during Bon dance festivities. NOT anime characters based in a 'Period' anime.

So how do I get more involved?

Easiest way is to contact the festival chair-person and ask about volunteer opportunities or a desire to conduct an event during a festival... I.e. Cos-Play Contest, karaoke show...etc.

Here are the festvals for SJ Nihonmachi:
http://www.nikkeimatsuri.org/     Next Date: Sun. April 25th, 2010
http://www.sjbetsuin.com/Obon/Homepage     Next Date: Sat. July 10th & Sun July 11th, 2010
http://www.spiritofjapantownfestival.com/contacts.htm     Next Date: TBA

Their response may be a bit slow, because they too are volunteers who have day jobs...  So, give them some time to respond.

Well, This thread got a little off track.  So, I should end this here...  I'll make a new post to address any activities that will occur at San Jose Nihonmachi.

Again, Thanks to all who showed interest in reading this posting.
