The old thread is pretty far lost, so it's time to start anew! The previous Cosplay Battle events were a blast, and now it's somewhat more official-ish! All are welcome, but those who sign up ahead of time here will have priority in turn order.

Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

Date: Friday, Saturday Sunday
Time: See Gatherings and Events List for Cosplay Game times.
Location: G9 Fri/Sun, G5 Sat

First of all, let me make one thing clear: even though the name is "Cosplay Battle" there will be absolutely no fighting. I repeat, violence will not be tolerated. If anyone is acting in a manner that threatens the safety of the other event participants, they will be asked to leave.

I had to make that absolutely clear before we begin. Now to explain the event itself.

I saw this done several years back at another convention, and had a great time participating, so I brought it to Fanime. So credit for the idea goes to the people who came up with it, although I don't know who you are or when it started.

The basic idea of the event is a tournament-style matchup of cosplayer vs cosplayer in three-pose battles -- three pictures in which the two look like they're fighting, then a "winner" is determined.

The two competitors come up and act like they're in the middle of a battle, freezing in place for pictures. Once this repeats three times, whoever feels they have "lost" will go down, and the winner is determined. Depending on the amount of participants, we may have the winners move on to later rounds, but that's probably unlikely.

Of course, any characters from any series are welcome. You don't have to be from a fighting series, or even be a character who can fight at all. You can be the tiniest character in a comedy series and still take on a super-powerful fighter and win, as long as the poses are right.

Example: Goku (Dragonball Z) vs Chiyo-chan (Azumanga Daioh)
- Goku begins powering up, while Chiyo kicks him in the knee. Freeze for pictures. (Remember, it can look like Chiyo is kicking Goku, but actually hitting the cosplayer is against the rules.)
- Goku fires a Kamehameha, and Chiyo ducks to avoid it. Freeze for pictures.
- Chiyo and Goku charge for one final attack. Freeze for pictures.
- Chiyo-chan wins! Goku lies defeated. Victory pose.
- Goku and Chiyo thank each other for a good, fun match, and the next competitors come up.

Please post if you are interested in joining, if you have any questions, and what days/times would be best for you.

Panels and Workshops / Abridging a Series 2012
February 03, 2012, 09:41:37 PM
Once again, the panel "Abridging a Series" will be returning to Fanime with lots of abridged series goodness. We're aiming to bring in even more abridgers to share their experience, and this year we'll be building the panel from scratch again for all new topics and information.

As always, it'll end with lucky audience volunteers recording lines for an abridged one-shot episode. We're not sure what yet, but right now I'm leaning towards Mawaru Penguindrum or Persona 4.

Panels and Workshops / Abridging a Series Panel 2011
January 14, 2011, 08:22:46 PM
Well, last year's panel on Abridged Series was a huge success, so it's time to make a thread for next year's. At this panel, we discuss what goes into the creation of Abridged Series, their popularity, history, and then audience volunteers come up and lend their voices for the creation of a one-shot episode.

This year, the panel will be run by myself (co-creator, writer, editor, and actor for Ranma 1/2: The Abridged Chronicles), as well as xXNeokaXx, editor of Negima The Abridged Series. We were cut off a little early last time, so we're going to aim for a 2-hour timeslot this time. That way the first hour can be spent discussing Abridged Series, while the second can be used for making the one-shot.

The videos from previous years can be found through these links:
2009: http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/anime/watch/v1852278369zXfg6M
2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZG56Lvk1NU
2011: http://youtu.be/KtMAiSYPcXo

We haven't yet decided what to abridge this year at the panel, so feel free to suggest a series you'd like to see. Please remember that it cannot be a licensed series, at the request of Fanime's staff. (The legality of Abridged Series will also be discussed at the panel. Spoiler: it's totally legal.)

Last year, I hosted the panel "Abridging a Series," all about the creation of Abridged Series, what makes them work, and how to make one. We even ended by creating an abridged episode of the Tales of the Abyss anime.

This year, I'm hosting it again! Currently scheduled for Saturday at 4 PM. Come in and join the discussion about your favorite Abridged Series, any series you'd like to abridge, how to make them, and we'll end by abridging an anime right then and there.

Which anime? That's where you guys come in.

You see, last year, I chose Tales of the Abyss. Turns out it was licensed by Bandai. I'll be discussing the legal issues about Abridged Series at the panel, but suffice to say, even though we was within our legal rights to create a parody video, they still had it removed from YouTube. To prevent this from happening again, I'm going to chose a more recent (and thus, unlicensed) anime for us to abridge, and I'm taking suggestions. If you have any series you'd like to abridge (one that can be found easily, preferably raw, and must not be licensed by any US companies), let me know, and I'll make a poll on which one we should abridge.

So stop on by and join the abridging! You can see last year's video here: http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/anime/watch/v1852278369zXfg6M
If you're curious as to my abridging experience, you can also see the Abridged Series that I make on my YouTube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/EliteslayerX

Come one and all to the third year of the Negima and Love Hina gathering! As always, cosplayers from any Ken Akamatsu series are welcome.

Every year, I see Love Hina cosplayers, and every year, there are some cosplaying from Negima. In fact, I've even seen some from A.I. Love You. Individually, they may not be enough for a gathering (or at least not a very large one) but if all the cosplayers from a Ken Akamatsu series got together, we can have one hell of a gathering.

So, I am now announcing the cosplay gathering for the works of Ken Akamatsu. Really, this is probably just going to mean Love Hina and Negima, but if there's anyone who's cosplaying as someone from any of his older series, that's excellent as well.

As an added bonus, if you sign up here, I'll make you a Pactio card for the gathering! If I cannot find a design for your character (which is highly unlikely for any Negima characters, but possible for any non-Negima cosplayers) I'll let you know which designs I have found and you can chose which one you want.

Day: Monday
Time: 1:00
Location: Undetermined

Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

List:

Love Hina:
Keitaro: RyuSan777
Naru: friend of Eliteslayer

Negima:
Nagi Springfield: Eliteslayer
Chisame Hasegawa: kookiekween99
Setsuna Sakurazaki: Aktsuko
Lifemaker: Otaking007

After the 2010 and 2011 Cosplay Battles were a fun success, it's time to change the thread for 2012! All are welcome, but those who sign up ahead of time here or on cosplay.com will have priority in turn order.

Time: Sat: 2:30
Sun: 12:30
Location: Front Mariott Side

Please post if you are interested in joining, if you have any questions, and what days/times would be best for you.

(To any Fanime staff: If there is anything about this event that needs changing, please let me know, but rest assured that this is entirely safe. I can understand if calling it "Cosplay Battle" is worrying, but as I've stated many times, it's all posing, there is no actual fighting.)

During Fanime 09, I tried hosting a cosplay gathering, to varying degrees of success. While I don't plan on hosting that same gathering for various reasons, I do want to do something for next Fanime. However, I'm not entirely sure what. Thus, I figured I'd post a poll and ask everyone what they think I should organize.

Given that the only costume I have planned that doesn't have a gathering for it yet is from "Mahou Sensei Negima," my first thought was a Negima gathering. However, I don't see too many Negima cosplayers around, but I have seen quite a few Love Hina cosplayers.

So my second thought was to host a gathering for all the works of Ken Akamatsu. This includes Negima, Love Hina, AI Love You, and all the other series he's created. Individually, there may not be enough of us for each series, but there's bound to be plenty for a combination.

Finally, there's something that I've seen organized at other conventions, but not at Fanime. Essentially, it's a "fight in three poses." Two characters go up and pose as though in the middle of a fight. People take pictures, then they move on to the next pose, until about three poses have been done, and a "winner" is decided by the fighters. Then we move on to the next matchup. Of course, it's not only for fighting characters -- all would be welcome. We could even have Chiyo from Azumanga Daioh take on Goku from DBZ, and win. (More details will be in the thread organizing this if people vote for it. I can also answer any questions you may have if you're curious.)

Of course, there's always the option of doing both, but I want to see what people would like, so I don't put all my energy into something no one will attend. If most people think both would be good, though, then I just might try to organize both.

Anyways, cast your vote, and please let me know what you think would be fun. Thanks for your time!

Forum Games / Land Shark Game
April 27, 2009, 10:59:59 AM
This is a game based off the classic SNL skit "Land Shark." As we all know, the Land Shark is the cleverest of all sharks, as he can actually walk on land and convince people that he's not a shark so that they let him in to their house in order to eat them. In this game, we'll become land sharks and innocent bystanders.

The rules are simple. One person posts a knock on the door, followed by some excuse to let them in. The next poster falls for that excuse, opens the door and gets eaten, and then becomes a land shark to post knocking on the door for the next poor sap.

Example:

Poster 1:
*Knock knock* I have an order of 50 pounds of chocolate to this address.

Poster 2:
Chocolaaaaate! *Opens the door and gets eaten.*
*Knock knock* Telegram

And so on. Of course, in the original sketch, it took a while for the land shark to convince the sap to let him in, but when I've tried this game in the past people would forget to check and see if they were let in, so in this game everyone will be gullible enough to let the shark in on the first knock.

If it's all clear, then have fun! And to begin...

*Knock knock* Excuse me, would you take a moment to sign this petition for "Save the Sharks?"

Panels and Workshops / "Abridging a Series" Panel
April 22, 2009, 07:42:45 PM
Hi there, I'm Eliteslayer, and I'll be hosting the panel "Abridging a Series," currently scheduled for Monday at 12:00. I'm sure many of you, if not most of you, watch and enjoy the Abridged Series that can be found all over YouTube. Some of you, like me, might even make Abridged Series of your own.

So, if you're a fan or an abridger, stop by the panel! We'll be discussing what makes a good Abridged Series, what goes into making an Abridged Series, then we'll be abridging the first episode of an anime series that (as far as I'm aware) has yet to be abridged.

What series? Well, you'll have to come and see for yourself. But get your voices warmed up, because we'll be needing audience volunteers to do the characters' voices!

So, I hope to see plenty of you there. If you have any questions, comments, etcetera, then feel free to post away!

Yes, this will be essentially a re-post of the YGO gathering thread on cosplay.com, but I felt it necessary to post it here as well. Wait, let me start this the right way...

ATTENTION DUELISTS! Come to the Yugioh Gathering! There will be card games, there will be cosplayers, and there will be pointy hair!
