Things in the Universe / San Francisco Cosplay Photobook
February 01, 2017, 10:12:14 PM
Hello Fanime Forum readers!

I am Kairu Photography and I was a panel presenter on cosplay photography last year at Fanime (my first time hosting a panel event ever!)

I just wanted to share a project that I've been working on the past 2+ years called "Cosplay by the Bay: a San Francisco Photobook" -- I shot with over 30+ cosplayers in and around iconic locations of San Francisco... and am now ready to share the project with all of you !

If you're interested, find sample photos, details, and more here:

Thanks and hope to see you all at Fanime in a few months ! (eek!)  :-X

Live Programming and Events / Re: Artist Alley 2017 FAQ
September 16, 2016, 02:03:26 PM
I've been informed via e-mail that Artist Alley only allows guest cosplayers to sell cosplay photos, and that no one else would be allowed to (this year at least).

Very disappointing and disheartening to hear that only special guests are allowed to sell something at Fanime but normal sellers won't be allowed to.

Are these photos of other people cosplaying? And if so do you have written permission to sell photos of them?

Yes, the photos are of cosplayers in cosplay. All photos I've taken have a written release, including print sales.

I am a photographer and was hoping to sell a few cosplay prints as well as a new cosplay photobook I'm producing at Fanime con 2017.

I was wondering if Artist Alley would be an appropriate place to apply for selling these things, since cosplay guests typically sell cosplay photo prints in artist alley as well ?

Thanks for any advice / guidance you can provide!

Best attempt to organize a list with band name in bold, followed by genre and how they might be related to Fanime (or best known)

    • Pillows - Alt/rock - FLCL soundtrack
    • One ok Rock - Rock/metal - Ruroni Kenshin (live action) and Captain Harlock
    • Baby Metal - Rock/metal - No anime relation, but would be awesome
    • Perfume - J-pop electronic - No anime relation
    • Uverworld - Alt/rock - Blue Exorcist soundtrack + more
    • Utada Hikaru - J-pop - Kingdom Hearts + more
    • Rip Slyme - Hip-hop/rap - Gantz OP
    • Dragon Ash - Rock/Hip-hop/Reggae - Battle Royale movie song
    • Base Ball Bear - Rock/pop - Bakuman, Gintama + more
    • Boom Boom Satelites - Electronic/pop - Kiznaiver OP + more
    • Porter Robinson - Electronic/dj - Anime and video game inspired show
    • Asian Kung Fu Generation - Alt/punk - Full Metal Alchemist song
    • Distant Worlds Symphony - Orchestra - Final Fantasy music performed with a full orchestra
    • Kreva - Hip-hop/rap - I just like him haha
    • M-flo - Hip-hop/pop - Appleseed: ex-machina

A lot of these are pretty unrealistic, but I would do everything in my power to attend Fanime if any one of these artists were performing.

A few of the more 'unique' ones are highlighted in red because they might bring a different feel to Fanime and broaden the fan base.

Hello everyone,

I am happy to say that Fanime has accepted and scheduled my panel !!

The panel is called "Intro to Cosplay Photography" and will cover the following topics:

  • Type of photography equipment best used in different scenarios
  • Etiquette for taking photographs of cosplayers (in and out of conventions)
  • Legal issues surrounding cosplay photography (including photo rights, sales, printing, etc.)
  • Photo editing, a brief overview of the types of tools people should familiarize themselves with to take their photos to the next level
  • Q&A, at the end, if time is available.

Is there anything you would like to see covered, mentioned, or discussed for this panel?

The panel will be in Room 3 at 6pm on Friday (Day 1) May 27th!! Hope to see you all there !

Thanks for the response, I submitted my panel January 30th, heard from staff that my panel has no questions or concerns in early February, and have not received a denial or acceptance notice as of April 20th. My understanding is all acceptance / scheduling notices have been sent, so I would probably be on the 'waitlist'.

I did see a Cosplay Posing panel but other than that nothing relating to cosplay photography.

I've been watching more and more current anime shows after catching up with my backlogs. I've loved checking out new and different shows at Fanime but would love it if Fanime were to show any current episodes from current shows. I don't know if this has been done before and I just haven't noticed it, but is it possible?

Thanks!

Hello Fanime Con Staffers and attendees,

I am a Bay Area photographer and have been doing cosplay photography for the past 3 or 4 years. I haven't presented a panel before and submitted a panel for Fanime 2015. My submission was for Convention Cosplay Photography 101 and would go through the basics of con cosplay photography (gear, rights, respect, posing, etc.).

As of now I have not been accepted nor denied, so Fanime Panel's Twitter team said I am probably on the wait list (tbh, not sure what that means besides maybe being  accepted if someone drops out? I find that unlikely though)

So now I would, perhaps too late, like to ask what typically goes into the decisions to accept, deny, or wait list one panel over others? I recognize sponsors will usually get their panels, as well as guests of honor. Outside of that, do things such as repeated panels (ones from previous years), number of presenters, etc. play a factor? I planned on presenting myself but wasn't sure if that would be a mark against me. Any tips or info would be appreciated.

I am asking so that if I don't get accepted this year, I can set my panel up for success in the future.

Thanks for any feedback ! Look forward to hopefully seeing many of you at the con in May!

Panels and Workshops / Re: Panels 2014 Feedback Thread

Hello Wonderful People!

Thank you so much for joining us in 2014. There were a few big changes this year, including the move to the Fairmont and the addition of Fan Events. In order to keep improving, we would love to hear back from you, as fans, panelists, volunteers and staff. Con just ended, but we're already making plans for next year. So, please let us know:

1. What did you like/what worked?
Nice variety of panels and subjects

2. What did you dislike/what didn't work?
Not that it was in your control, but I didn't like having to go so far across the way to get to the panel rooms in the second hotel. I also had a hard time finding rooms (some weren't labeled very well for some reason)

3. What suggestions do you have for next year?
I know panel scheduling is probably a mess, but as much as possible it'd be nice to have thematic sections, so one room will mostly be about cosplay and one area will mostly be about industry stuff, or something similar. I understand if that can't be done though. I do think the map of where panels are being hosted would be good since last time I asked a few people and the staff didn't know where the panel room I was looking for was. If it was on the map it would've been easy.

4. Are there panels/topics you really want to see next year (other than your own  :P )?
I applied and at this point it looks like I will be hosting my first panel (fingers crossed). Other than my own I'd like to see more cultural panels (nerd culture, cosplay culture, gamer culture, japanese culture, american anime culture, etc.)

5. Anything else you want to mention?
I appreciate all the work that goes into panels from the organization, to the speakers, to the volunteers, etc. So thank you everyone for your work. I hope to join the ranks of panel speakers for 2015, so look forward to getting involved more.

Here's looking at 2015~!

I was wondering what a "Panelist Helper" must do to be considered a "helper". Do they have to help present or can they be background people (prep, setup, teardown, recording, etc?)

I want to be sure my friend can get a helper refund if he qualifies but don't want to mark him as a 'helper' if he doesn't meet the requirements.

Any clarification would be appreciated!
