Homestuck! / What Pumpkin will be at Fanime!
February 17, 2015, 04:26:55 PM
According to What Pumpkin's tumblr, they will have a booth at Fanime this year! Finally, I can throw money at them in person instead of over the internet.

I'm trying to figure out where to plug in an HDMI cord in the TVs in the Marriott. Anyone having better luck than me?

General Convention Discussion / Fanime Theme 2014
December 23, 2013, 05:44:18 PM
So.... A beach party theme then?  ;D

If my badge doesn't feature Damien in a bikini, I will be sorely disappointed.

Last year it was posted on the website, but no such annoucement has been made for 2014.

I thought we, as a fandom, were very well behaved this year.

But I keep seeing posts about how Homestuck ruined Fanime for them or people saying something along the lines of, "Well, other non-anime fandoms like Doctor Who and My Little Pony are okay, but those damn Homestucks need to get out of my con!"

What, exactly, is so terrible about Homestuck? Sure, there are a few... eccentric members of the fandom, but hey, any fandom has its crazies. And like I said, as far as general behavior and sealing paint/makeup went, I think we did a pretty good job.

So other than the fact that Homestuck is not from Japan and it's not an anime, how has it ruined your con? Why does this one fandom get singled out more than any other?

Hotel and Facilities / Deposits
January 22, 2013, 10:22:29 PM
I know that the max they can charge for a deposit is $100/night, but the individual hotels charge different amounts. My goal here is to gather information about each individual hotel for reference. If you have any info not listed here, please let me know so I can update the list. Here's what I've gathered so far from experience and forum threads:

Hilton: $50/night
Marriott: $50/night
Hyatt Place: $50/night
Saint Claire: $50/night
Fairmont: $100/night
Ramada: ?
Holiday Inn: ?
Radisson: ?
DoubleTree: ?

Just curious if anyone in the Hilton (or any other Fanime hotel) has tried ordering pizza delivered to their room before. I've read that some hotels allow it and some don't.

General Convention Discussion / Fanime Characters
December 03, 2012, 10:14:39 PM
I wonder if the Fanime artists realize that there is a small almost-cult following of the Fanime characters. At least among me and my friends, that is.

For those who don't know, there are five characters that Fanime uses in its artwork. (Pictures here: http://fanime-con.deviantart.com/gallery/28182292 Character Descriptions here: http://fanime-con.deviantart.com/gallery/28182292)

My favorite character is Amber because my name is Amber and my favorite color is blue and I'm shy and I like cats. For Fanime 2012, I got super duper excited when my badge had Amber and my boyfriend's badge had Damien. ♥

My friend even made fanart! http://anime-anime.deviantart.com/art/Fanime-OCs-305440187 and http://anime-anime.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d59hdtw

Anyways, I just wanted to bring it up to let the Fanime artists know that their efforts are appreciated and to possibly let others know about this small part of Fanime culture. I can't wait to see the artwork for this year! ^^

Hotel and Facilities / Hilton HDMI?
May 17, 2012, 07:54:08 AM
The CMR website says "All guestrooms are equipped with external port for AV and gaming devices." The Hilton website says nothing useful. So I guess I have to rely on other people's experience here.

Do the "external port for AV and gaming devices" include HDMI?

General Convention Discussion / Awesome Department?
March 24, 2012, 05:32:33 PM
So I was working on the Program Guide for ASAHiCon (<obligatorymarketing>It's next Saturday!</obligatorymarketing>), and I was studying program guides from other cons to make sure I had included all the content I needed to, and I noticed that in the staff list in the very back of last year's program guide for Fanime, there was a department named "Awesome."

I shall now spend the rest of the day speculating what that department actually does. :3

Normal-sized Ramune provided for reference.

Normal Ramune = 6.76 oz (200 mL)
Epic Ramune = 13.86 oz (410 mL)

More than twice the Ramune!!!

Thank you to Boyfriend, who found these at an Asian market near him and bought some for me. <3

Big Event Showcase / What's the B&W Ball like?
February 21, 2012, 06:50:40 PM
So this will be my third year going to Fanime, but it'll be my first year going to B&W Ball. You see, it's my senior year of high school, and I can't afford to go to both Senior Ball and Fanime, so I obviously chose Fanime. My friends and I thought it would be a good idea to use Fanime's B&W Ball as our Senior Ball. I was all psyched about this idea until I realized: both my date and I have never done any sort of structured dance before.

When I brought this up to my friends, they were like "Don't worry about it. Fanime has dance lessons!" But then my date didn't like the idea of spending hours in dance lessons when we could be doing other stuff. I decided to try and prove to him that it wouldn't be as hard as he thought, so I went on the Fanime Youtube channel and watched a few of the dancing tutorial videos. I have to say, I was completely lost. Like, have you ever seen on tv when someone's all like "Oh yeah, it's super easy!" and then they do a super complicated thing and the main character looks completely lost and embarrased? That's how I felt watching the videos.

So, I guess I have a few questions.

-Are the dance lessons in person as difficult to follow as the videos? I'm thinking maybe an in-person instructor might help me figure it out better.
-Does it take a super long time to learn all this? If my boyfriend has to spend a whole lot of time in dance lessons, he's going to try to talk me out of the whole thing.
-Do we need to know all the dances? There's a lot of Youtube videos in the playlist, and I'm worried about learning one or two, let alone 12.
-Are people going to get mad if we mess up? I don't want to be stressed out during the dance, I want to actually enjoy myself.
-How do you know what dance to do? I usually listen to more of the kind of stuff that's played at the dance-that-is-not-a-rave, so I have no idea what dance goes to what type of music.
-Do you have to dance the whole time, or is there somewhere where you can sit down and chat?
-Is it fun?

Sorry to be asking so much, but if I'm using this as my Senior Ball, I want everything to go perfectly!

TL;DR Version: I can't dance. How much effort do I need to put in to have fun?

Registration / Price Change Date?
February 09, 2012, 06:06:11 PM
So I know the current price is $55, but when should I expect it to jump to $60? I need to give my friend a deadline to get me the money.

ASAHiCon, a small local convention, still has Artist Alley tables (as well as Swap Meet tables!) available! Information here: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16873.0.html

@Mods: If I'm not allowed to post this, let me know. I put it in the Meetings and Gatherings section, but the people I'm trying to reach never go in that section, so I put this here so artists could see it.

Mod edit: a more informative and appropriate title

Information Here: http://www.asahicon.org/?page_id=547

Artist Alley, Swap Meet, and Dealer Tables at only $10! For artists, the first table is free. :)

So I'm planning on getting my driver's permit within the next couple weeks. This was planned so that I would get my driver's license in April. However, I just found out that you have to wait 90 days after getting your license before they actually give you the version with the photo. Fanime is less than 60 days from when I'll have my license, so now I have a dilemma.

Would it be possible to use my interim license with my name/birthdate and my school ID with my name/picture together to prove my identity? I know, I know, school IDs are frowned upon, but I can't think of any other way. Last year, I got around not having an ID by having my mom as group leader, but this year my mom's on staff, so I have to be group leader.

Also, is it too early to email registration?

Panels and Workshops / "What's a Bishonen?" - 2012
June 03, 2011, 07:38:50 AM
So at ASAHiCon last April, my friend Jackie did a panel called "What's a Bishonen? Chu~" which explained the origin of the term bishonen and gave several examples throughout history. She also explained the different elements that make up a bishonen and gave the different types of bishonen. It was pretty successful and had all the girls going crazy. So she and I were wondering if anyone would be interested in her doing this at Fanime?

What are your thoughts? I'm totally open to suggestions on how we can improve this concept. :)

EDIT: Seperated into two different topics, as someone suggested. See the Rave Culture 101 thread here: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16449.0.html

Panels and Workshops / "Kandi Making 101" - 2012
June 02, 2011, 07:31:31 PM
So my friend Jackie and I had the idea to do a panel explaining rave culture, debunking common misconceptions (like "All ravers are drug addicts," which is totally untrue), and most importantly, explaining the significance of kandi. I noticed there were a lot of people wearing kandi this year, and the Dance is a really popular event, so I thought this might be interesting. Alternatively, if rave culture is considered too risque, we could limit it to just the significance and creation of kandi.

What are your thoughts? I'm toally open to suggestions on how we can improve this concept. :) Also, looking for suggestions on a better title.

EDIT: We could also teach some basic shuffling if anyone's interested. (I don't feel skilled enough to really teach anyone.)

EDIT2: Seperated into two different topics, as someone suggested. See the "What's a Bishonen" thread here: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16454.0.html

EDIT3: Our new idea is to focus more on kandi from an artist's perspective. See the first three posts below.

Registration / Place-holding?
May 14, 2011, 03:25:38 PM
How do the registration staff feel about place-holding? IE: My mom, who is group leader, is standing in line, but she has to go to the bathroom, so I switch with her while she goes, then switch back when she gets back so I can go chill in the hotel room while I wait for her to get our badges. Would staff be upset because they thought I was trying to cut? Would they make my mom go all the way to the back of the line just because she couldn't hold her bladder for ten more minutes?

Hotel and Facilities / Hilton - Paying in Cash?
April 25, 2011, 10:58:57 AM
We were thinking of paying completely in cash to avoid having a hold put on the card used to check in. Is there any extra fees we should know about besides the estimation in the email confirmation and parking?

I heard a rumor from one of my friends that glowsticks weren't going to be allowed this year because of the very tiny possibility they might break and spill. Is there any truth to this rumor? I know that selling glowsticks isn't allowed, which totally makes sense. But banning people from wearing glowsticks seems a bit extreme.

So might I get some clarification on this? I don't want to waste money buying glowsticks if I'm not going to get to use them.

ASAHiCon 2011 is going to be a one-day con on April 9, 2011 at Antioch High School. It's completely student run under the supervison of Jason Ebner and a few other teachers, convention veterans, and parent volunteers. All funds raised by this convention will go to Antioch High's after school programs, including ASAHi (Anime Society of Antioch HIgh) and E=MC^2 (Eastern Multi-Cultural Club aka Asian Club). Admission will be $7 or $5 with a school ID.

We plan on having a 25+ system game room (larger than any other local convention), Dealer's/Swap Meet Area, Artist Alley, Anime and Asian Film rooms, panels, and plenty of room for cosplay. I'm probably forgetting something, so we might have more.

For more information and to see our club blog, visit http://www.asahicon.org/. If you have any questions, send an e-mail to [email protected].
