The FanimeCon Black & White Ball FAQ

This FAQ is subject to change.  The most recent information will come from a member of the Black & White Ball at the events handled by the Ball, such as classes, the Ball, or Stage Zero demos.  The purpose of this FAQ is to address questions that have come up over the last three years of the Ball's existence, that are not necessarily stated anywhere else.  While this FAQ may address information that has been posted formally (i.e. Dress Code, instructional videos, responses by Ball members on any message board) it is intended to be a clarification rather than a substitute.  Please address feedback to the FAQ as a response to the FAQ where posted, or as an email to the Ball at [email protected].

What is the Black & White Ball?
The FanimeCon Black & White Ball is a semi-formal dance offered by the Extravaganzas Department of FanimeCon that takes place on Sunday night for all registered attendees.  As of 2012, the Ball and its associated dance lessons are being held in both The J Ballroom in the San Jose Convention Center as well as Parkside Hall, please check the fanime.com website and your guide at FanimeCon for more details.

What do I need to know about partner dancing?
Glad you asked.  We prefer that you follow normal dance etiquette:
1)    Feel free to ask a partner.  Feel free to turn down a partner, but if you decline, please do not ask for or accept a dance for the duration of the song that is playing.
2)   Look where you're going.  Look where you're going.  Look where you're going.  You probably will not like getting stepped on or run into.  Apologize if you do it.
3)   Follow the line of dance if a travelling dance such as waltz or foxtrot is played.  Stand in the middle of the floor, point your finger at the edge of the floor, and turn your body to the left.  Line of dance is the path your finger traces along the edge of the floor.  Please dance as close to the edge of the floor as you can.
4)   If you are doing a dance that does not travel (i.e. swing) to a song marked as a travel dance (i.. waltz) please dance closer to the center of the floor so as to allow waltzers to move around the outside of the floor.
5)   Please get off the floor if you are not dancing.

Semi-formal?
A dress code is enforced as a condition of entry to the Ball.  The code can be found on the main Black & White Ball event webpage linked in the main FanimeCon portal.

Why is a dress code necessary?
Among other things, the Ball was envisioned to be a dance that had slightly more structure to allow it to be friendly to families.  The use of a dress code supports that idea.  Other considerations include cleaner music (i.e. no profanity) and having the members of the Ball roam around the floor available for dances, and to break up individual dances.  This is of course in addition to normal Con etiquette such as civility to fellow Congoers, good personal hygiene and being aware of your surroundings.
The dress code is also there to promote safety.  We restrict shoes to dressy type and with certain types of heels.  We also do not want the floor to be marked up by the soles of shoes.   Please scrape the pavement with the soles of your shoes to check if you're not sure if it'll leave a mark.  For those who are dressing as gentlemen, we prefer that you try to find at least a leather dressy looking shoe.  The leather loafer style of shoe (i.e. Toms) are acceptable, but leather sneakers are iffy depending on how it's styled.   Canvas shoes and other materials are not encouraged.

Why are individual dances broken up?
The Ball was envisioned also to promote partner dancing.  We offer 24 hours of instruction during the convention for that purpose in a wide variety of styles.  We have gone to the expense of providing a real dance floor that is used at ballroom and swing dance competitions.  We offer semi-private lessons Friday and Saturday evenings for those people who don't have time during the day to take lessons, or prefer a little more concentrated instruction.  We avail you the opportunity to learn about partner dancing and provide an experience comparable to what you would find at conventions devoted to partner dancing.  While we regret discouraging your full creative expression, bear in mind that your actions on the floor interfere with those people who are willing to put in the time and effort to learn and dance.  There are other dances at the FanimeCon that can accommodate your likes.  Please feel free to release your inhibitions at them.

Who are the members of the Ball?
We are a group of people who teach a variety of styles of partner dancing.  Some of us are students learning, or fully involved in dance, some are hobbyists, some who teach dance for a living, some who compete at dance competitions.  Since we are diverse in appearance and expression, we have taken to wearing teal armbands while participating at the Con to identify ourselves.

Count on a friendly tap on the shoulder and someone in an armband saying to you "Please don't do that." or "Would you like to dance?" depending on the situation.

Can I request specific music at the Ball?  If not where can I make my request?
Let's break this up into a couple of parts:
Requests can be posted in the appropriate thread on the FanimeCon forums, where our music people can take a look at it, and give it a go/no on inclusion into the playlist.  We have the final say in all music requests.  Requests cannot be taken at the Con.  The reason why is because we display slides that show the name of the song and the type of dances that can be done to it because we encourage partner dancing.  Slides have to be done before the Con.
As for your genre, we try to pick out songs that we can actually partner dance to.  We have provided two years worth of playlists on the FanimeCon forums.  If you take a look at them you will notice a wide range of genres from Asian Pop to 8-bit game music themes.  What we look for overall is a readily distinguishable beat, melody characteristics for the styles of dance we have in mind, and a speed suitable to dancing by novice dancers; with a couple of advanced dance suitable songs for those of us who want to try it.  Something like dubstep at the current time may not be suitable while some house songs may be tailor made for some dances like hustle.

What if I do not like the music that was played at the Ball?
We regret that your enjoyment of the Ball was severely hampered by the overrepresentation of a certain genre/artist/instrument in the playlist.  We try for diversity and danceability.  The playlist is reviewed by all the members of the Black & White Ball for repetition and possible boredom.  Bear in mind that the playlist has to cover 17 different styles of dance, some of which are mutually exclusive in regards to other styles concerning music.  It is also entirely possible that you caught the portion of the playlist that covered a subsection of dance that you may not have liked.  If you do have feedback about the playlist, please post it in the FanimeCon Forums; please be as specific as you can in regards to music so that we can fix it for the next year.

If I have a comment or concern how do I get in touch with someone in charge?
Our apologies for your unpleasant experiences at the Ball – we put forth a lot of effort throughout the year to optimize the Ball experience.  The primary Point of Contact is the head of the Black & White Ball, who will draw attention to himself during Stage Zero, the classes, and the Ball itself.  Feel free to come up and chat.  Please be respectful.  Please be calm and describe what happened and why you didn't like it.  If you couldn't put your finger on it till after the Ball, please feel free to post on the FanimeCon forums; and the Facebook group in the appropriate feedback thread.  If you feel a little more discretion is required, post a note stating that you prefer privacy and we'll accommodate you.

Hello everyone,

So I am just starting this thread early for next year's Black and White Ball.  I know it is only summer time and FanimeCon 2011 was only 3 months, but why not get an early start for next year.  I have received some feedback that not all the songs this year fit everyone's thoughts on what should be played at a Black and White Ball.  So here is your chance to provide input on what songs you would like to see in the playlist.  If you have not seen it yet, you can view the playlist from 2011 and 2010 here http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,16384.0.html

Here are some things you should know about the playlist.  The playlist is usually compiled from suggestions we receive through the forums, social media outlets, and word of mouth.  The Black and White Ball staff then take the suggestions and see if it has a steady beat to dance to and if it fits with the type of dances for the evening. We understand that not all songs will be liked by everyone, but we do try to get a mix in there to make sure that there is a variety of music.  The staff then has to make sure that the sound is at the right levels, we have to make sure the tempo is right, and we have to cut some of the songs for length.  Due to all of this, we have to have the playlist done early (before the month of May usually) and this prevents us from taking requests at The Black and White Ball.  Also, judging from last year, there was a big push of requests in the couple of weeks leading up to the BWBall, but we could not accommodate some of those songs because it was so close to the event.  So get your requests in early.

So with that said, this is your chance to give your input on what you would like to hear at the Black and White Ball.  Please remember that even though you make a request, the Black and White Ball staff will have the final say of what goes on the playlist.  If you really feel strongly about a song, say so and provide support for it.  We are looking for all types of music from pop, jpop, anime, video game, etc...  So don't be afraid to offer up suggestions.  It also helps if you can link a video or audio clip of the song with your requests but it is not required.  You can also email us with your requests at [email protected].  We look forward to hearing your requests. Thanks!

- Jim

*UPDATE* With FanimeCon only a couple of months away, BWBall is getting our playlist together. Please keep in mind that we are not able to take requests directly at Black and White Ball so all requests need to be done before hand through this forum.  There was some concern over music choices last year so if you have any suggestions or requests, do them here!  We are open to all suggestions.  Due to our editing process we will be closing the request list for 2012 at the end of the first week in April.  Anything submitted after that will be taken into consideration for 2013!  So get those requests in as soon as you can!  Hope to see you all at the 2012 Black and White Ball!

*Reminder* Just a friendly reminder, this week will be the last week to get your requests in for BWBall.  Any songs submitted after April 7th will be considered for the 2013 Black and White Ball.  Again, thank you everyone for your suggestions thus far!  Hope to see everyone at the Black and White Ball on MAy 27th, 2012!!!

Hi all,

I know that it is right after a wondering FanimeCon, but I just wanted to see what your thoughts were on this year's Black & White Ball as well as the dance lessons and dance demos that preceded it.  I just want to hear from people how it went, what you may have really liked about it or maybe what didn't work so well.  I will try to respond with my general thoughts later on. Thanks everyone.

Hey everyone.  If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a dance instructor for the Black and White Ball in 2011 please let me know.  You can either post here or you can email [email protected].  This year's instructors were great and many of them are returning in 2011.  We are looking for more instructors to join this wonderful group and are looking to start things rolling after the holidays.  So if you are interested in teaching or assisting with dance lessons and/or the Black and White Ball, let me know.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

I am just taking a poll to see what dances people would like to learn for FanimeCon 2011.  This gives you an opportunity to vote for three (3) of the dances you would like to see taught at FanimeCon for next year.  This way, we can start planning for these dance lessons.  Please do remember though, these classes are going to be geared more toward beginning lessons than intermediate or advanced.  Thanks!

Hello everyone.  The 2010 BWBall went well this year and I just thought I would get an early jumpstart for next year.  If you would like to request a song for next year, please request it on this thread and if at all possible post a link to the song (youtube, imeem, etc.) so we can listen to it.  Even better, include the mp3 or email the song to [email protected] and we will see if it fits.  This is your chance to let us know what songs you would really like to hear at the BWBall since we do not take requests at the event.  Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I didn't have my camera with me at the Black and White Ball and was wondering if anyone had pictures or videos taken at the 2010 Black and White Ball?  If you do, could you email us the photo or video at [email protected] or post a link on here if it is ok.  There were some great demonstrations at Stage Zero and at the Black and White Ball and I would like to ask if anyone has any pictures or photos of them, please send them our way.  Thank you!

Thank you everyone for coming out to the dance lessons and the Black and White Ball this year.  The staff, instructors, and assistants all had a great time this weekend.  The Black and White Ball reached capacity within an hour of opening the doors and over 2000 people showed up for the 5 hour event!!!  We changed up a few things this year and we were wondering how well they worked and what everyone thought about them.  Everything from the lessons, the demonstrations on stage zero, the Black and White Ball itself, etc.  As everyone knows, Fanime is put on by fans for fans so we really want to know what you think, good or bad.  So let us know what worked and what didn't so we can make 2011 that much better.  Thanks!

*Update* The dress code and dance schedule for The 2010 Black and White Ball is up on the FanimeCon website http://www.fanime.com/events/black-and-white-ball   Almost all the information you would need about BWBall is on the website.  See you at FanimeCon 2010.

Hi everyone!  Fanime is coming up soon and there have been some questions in regards to attire and ettiquette for the Black and White Ball so I thought I would post the information here.

The Black and White Ball will be held on Sunday May 30, 2010 in the evening this year.  The time has yet to be confirmed but the date is solid.   There will be dance lessons again this year, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the Black and White Ball.

Attire seems to be a big question for people planning to attend the Black and White Ball.  I will try to answer some of that here but if you are still unsure post what your outfit may look like in the forums or email [email protected] and I will let you know if it is acceptable attire or not.

- For the dance lessons, casual attire is fine.  You are not required to dress up for dance lessons.   However, everyone is required to be wearing shoes of some sort for the dance lessons.  No one will be allowed to attend class barefoot.  Safety issue and all.

- For the Black and White Ball
- Things that are not allowed - Sneakers, flip flops, sandals, shoes without a backing to hold them on your feet, jeans, shorts, any skirt that is higher than 3 inches from the knees, swimwear, tube tops, and t-shirts.
- Things that are allowed - dress shoes, open toed shoes with a backing on them, slacks, khakis, skirts that are 3 inches higher than the knees or lower, blouse, long sleeve button up shirt, short sleeve button up shirt, ties, jackets.

There will be people at the door checking clothing and attire.  Word of advice for anyone who is planning to attend, it does tend to get a bit crowded and we will not have a coat check, so please try not to bring too many things as there will be no place to store your belongs.

That is it for now.  Stay tuned for more updates and happenings with the Black and White Ball.  If you have any questions, email [email protected]

Hello everyone,

So since there were some suggestions about music for BWBall this year, I thought I would get an early jump for 2010.  So if you have any requests or ideas for songs to be played either at the Black and White Ball or the dance lessons taught in the days prior to ball, please let me know.

As always, if you could email the song or link the song that would be great!  The best though is sending us an MP3 of the song.  But if you do not have a copy of the song just list the title/artiste/anime or video game.  Please remember that we try to accomodate everyone's suggestions for music but it is not a gaurantee that your song will be played at the Ball or the dance lessons.  Thanks.

Hello everyone!

This is Jim, the Department 2nd for the Black and White Ball.  I want to say thank you to all the Fanime goers for making this year's Black and White Ball such a success.  We had a great turn out and from the looks of things everyone had a great time.

I want to extend a big thank you to all the instructors and assistants for their time teaching and assisting dance classes as well as going to the Black and White Ball to help get everyone on the dance floor and helping everyone have a blast.

So I am asking all that went to the Black and White Ball, how was it?  The good and that bad of it, we would like to know.  We all know you are out there and you have your opinions on the Ball.  Please let us know them so we may improve on things and make next year's Black and White Ball an even bigger success!  Thanks everyone and enjoy the rest of the Fanime Convention!

The Black and White Ball will be returning to Fanime 2009.  This year, the dance floor will be larger, the music will be extensive, and the night will be one to remember!  I am openning up this thread because there seems to be a lot of questions surrounding the attire allowed into the Black and White Ball.

As of right now, the attire for the event is formal.  This means for the gents, it will be tuxedo, suits, or the bare minimum of slacks/shirt/and tie.  For the ladies, an evening gown, formal gown, or the bare minimum of dress skirt and blouse.  Cosplays will be welcome as long as they are staying with the formal theme.  So this means no miniskirts, tube tops, tank tops, jeans, shorts, cutoffs, sneakers, etc...

This event was very popular last year and we are expecting a great turn out again this year.  We want everyone to enjoy the ball and have a great time, so that is why I am postiing this thread.  If you have any questions your outfit for the ball, post them here.  You can even post a picture of your outfit/cosplay here and we will let you know if it will get you into the Black and White Ball.  If you want to keep your outfits a secret til Fanime, send us an email at [email protected] and we will get back to you with an answer.

Hope to see everyone at the Black and White Ball this year!

Hi everyone, I am the 2nd for the B&W Ball at FanimeCon 2009 and just wanted to get a jump start on this.  From the posts that I have read from the previous years, there seems to be a lot of suggestions and comments about the B&W Ball.  We are taking all of them to heart and trying to plan a great B&W Ball for 2009.

As you all know, this event cannot even take place without our staff.  So I am posting this asking if there is anyone who may be interested in being a dance instructor for the Con.  Please email me at [email protected] and I will send you the information.  Thank you.

- Jim

Update: Thank you everyone for your interest in instructing and assisting at the Black and White Ball and dance lessons.  As of today, we have enough instructors for Fanime! Yay!  We also have a lot of people who are assisting too.  So, the instructor positions are filled but if you would still like to assist please email [email protected]

Hi everyone,  I am part of the committee for Black and White Ball for 2009.  I wanted to get a jump on things for the upcoming year, so I wanted to hear from people, what songs would you suggest or like to be played at the B&W Ball?  Any suggestions would be great.  I know last year, music from anime, games, and jpop were played.  We were hoping to expand on that for the upcoming year.  So if you do have any good suggestions please let me know in this format:

<Name of song> - <artist/anime it came from> - <What dance it will be for>

Also if you could link me a site to listen or gather the songs, that would be greatly appreciated also.  Thanks for your help.

Hey everyone.  I was one of the dance instructors for the B&W Ball and was wondering how the dance lessons went? Just wanted to get an idea to see if there are any suggestions as far as lessons go and what not.  I don't care if the comments are negative or positive, I just want to know if people had a good time and if there is anything I can improve on.

I had a blast teaching everyone and it was great being back at Fanime after being gone for a while.  Thanks to everyone who came out.  ;)
