There's a rumor going around that there may be a Black and White Masquerade Ball, as well as a mask making workshop and ballroom dancing lessons at Fanime in 2007.

I WILL attend the ballroom dancing if it is available.  I love ballroom dance, and I've taken classes.  I know West coast, East coast (swing), Tango, Waltz, Lindy hop, Salsa, Cha-Cha, pretty much anything learned at a college-level beginning ballroom class with a little extra classes that I attend during the night.  I want to do West coast with people at Fanime! I'll be Inuyasha, and Ryuk, maybe Duo.....

So if there are lessons, will we need to come in pairs for the lessons?  I'll be there with friends but none of them may want to take lessons.  Will there be spare dancing partners available, do you think?

I love ballroom dancing, or what I've learned...

But do we have to be dressed in black and white? :(  I have few outfits like that and I just don't have the time to make a new one to be 'cosplaying' in the correct colors. :(
Title: Black and White Masquerade Ball in '07?
Post by: boots01 on February 10, 2007, 01:16:11 AM
the rumors i'm hearing now are that it's going to be more of a formal type of ball where the predominate colors would be black and white, but as cosplay isn't always black and white, it sounds like the idea is focus more on the costume aspect rather than the specific black and white aspect.

I really hope they do this.  I'm looking forward to cosplay and all, but it'd be nice to actually have a reason to dress like a girl for a little bit.

Is cosplaying a requirement because I might not be dressing up in black and white. XD  The formality of it is reasonable and I understand that part.

If the black and white cosplay isn't required, then I can go and I'm looking forward to it!! <3

i believe that the idea is to be in a "costume" of some sort, with it being on the formal side.  one could argue that a tux/gown etc. is a "costume" i suppose...

Is the ball still for formal cosplay of any color?

I've had an idea to do a certain cosplay for years and it looks like I will finally do it this year.  The only thing is my dress will be lavendar and my partner's outfit will be blue.
Title: Black and White Masquerade Ball in '07?
Post by: boots01 on February 12, 2007, 02:16:46 PM
i think that that should be fine.  my undrestanding is that the black and white part isn't specifically to limit it to black and white, but to impress the idea of it being fomal.  so any color should be fine so long as the outfit is more or less formal.

this is going to be alot of fun.

I'm glad I gave in to my overwhelming urge to make very fancy cosplay this year.  and I've always wanted to learn how to dance.

We should probably have a NEW poll up about what music we'd want to see! That way we can help keep interest alive for this ball, so Fanime Staff will be FORCED to give us this ball!!
Title: Black and White Masquerade Ball in '07?
Post by: zoupzuop2 on March 08, 2007, 03:42:35 PM
Interest from a body of people isn't the only thing that'd influence such an event on such short notice. I'm interested in having Franz Tornado, Bazooka Girl, and likeminded HI-NRG Attack artists come to Fanime, as, I'm sure, quite a few Fanime attenders are. This doesn't mean that, necessarily, Fanime staff would feel inclined to pull that off, given that AVEX is probably painful to negotiate with (it'd be like trying to book Dragonforce for a 13 year old boy's birthday). Even if we put up a poll, would they feel like they HAD to?

In a similar sense, a B&W Ball would best be commenced by a small group of individuals amongst ourselves, with a representative making it work with Fanime staff. "Pushing" something on the staff and "forcing" them to give us a ball will incline them the other way. Remember, respect can work wonders.

(And, if a 13-year-old boy ever books Dragonforce, I'm SOOOOO goin' to his birthday party. Heck yeah.)

Well, the first thing we would need is a place to have the ball.  I don't know anything about the layout of the site (this being my first Fanime), so I'm not sure what would be a good place to do it.  We'd also need to get permission and a time frame from the Staff.  Once we do that, the rest of the ball particulars can be worked out.

However, it does sound like Eugene has a lot of these particulars already taken care of...Eugene?  You appear to have plenty of help wherever you need it =)

Okay...forced is a bit...harsh of a term to use. I'm just saying that if we continue to put the pressure on this thread, and really work at making this a reality....then the staff just might be able to pull off this ball for us.

I DO want us to keep the dancing styles simple, ESPECIALLY with some volunteer instructors. I, for one, do not know how to dance. Period. I know a lot of other people don't know how to dance, or not very well. Others may only know formal dancing that you do during a school dance, but not anything more. I think perhaps we could pick some music styles to fit time periods of more Novice, Medium, and/or Expert dancing styles. That way people who really know how to dance, or dance decently can tear it up on the floor, without worrying so much about novices. Not to mention us novices won't get so intimidated.

Formal dancing isn't something that everyone is used to, so I'm sure that the dances will be simple...plus, there will be lessons, or so it says in the original post.  The biggest hurdle is getting people who might be afraid of dancing to the classes so they realize that this is supposed to be a "look good and have fun" thing, not something where people are going to make fun of you since you're new to dance.

Well, i guess now that it's finally gotten up on the website, i can drop all the rumor stuff.

SO! who want's info on the event????

well, here you go!

Suggested Attire:

Formal-wear cosplay (ex. egl/ega, dressed up bleach/naruto/fma/etc. characters, top hat and tails)

NO AGE LIMIT! This dance will be open to children of all ages but there ARE two conditions.

1) you MUST have a valid convention badge
2) you should do your best to be in costume.

so, what constitutes a costume in my mind is something that you wouldn't wear everyday. this can be a suit and tie, it can be a naruto shinobi costume, it can be pretty much anything besides street clothes. if you can't get a costume together, pick yourself up a mask (phantom of the opera style, or a half mask, etc., or even a nice papier mache venitian).

now, does this mean we wont let you in if you don't have a costume, no. but since most people will be in costume, just be forewarned that you will look a little out of place.

Heck yes! What sort of formal ballroom dancing are we planning on, here, anyway?

The Cha-cha is an easy, upbeat dance that works for a lot of songs.
Swing dancing is fun and also not too hard, and good for improvisation.
Waltz is a nice mellow dance and probably not THAT hard to teach people.
Salsa is all the rage and good for improvisation but kind of hard to teach.

Who's teaching, anyway? I think that, probably, a one-hour lesson can only teach about one of the aforementioned dances, though that's not to say that there couldn't be music that could apply to dances other than the mentioned ones.

And then there are a few dances that probably nobody will know but are SO FUN if you're good at them, such as Paso Doble and Tango. (I wish I remembered them better.)

The website said swing and waltz at least.  An hour class for each is plenty to get the basics down for East Coast swing (single or triple step) and or to teach localized area waltz, i.e. instead of rotary waltz where everyone is proceeding in a huge circle in line of dance, everyone would kind of be in their own spaces doing their rotations in a much smaller area.  It's better for beginners.   I'll bet they throw a few fox trots in also, since those can be reasonably basic too.  Schottische (although it sounds hard) is actually super easy...if you can walk and hop, you can dance it =)  So those would be my suggestions.

Cha-Cha and Salsa are nice, but I don't dig too much on latin frame dances except for Tango =)

I've been hearing news that the rave party for Fanime was canceled and that many believe that this event, the B&W Ball, will take its place. From what I read, the people who were holding the rave party had some budget problems, and they had to cancel.

I've been on the defense for the B&W Ball, saying that this event was planned way before the news came out, and that just because there's no rave party doesn't mean the B&W Ball has to go too...

Hey, are they taking song requests for this event?  If so I have one that I'd like to suggest.

I think foxtrot will be taught first since it's the ballroom version of "slow" dancing. Waltz will definitely be taught since it's what a majority of the people think they will learn. Swing will be fun to dance west coast isn't hard to learn. It'd be great if some Latin dances are thrown in too. I love Latin styles and swing; they're really fun to dance. =D

Does anyone know if wearing ballroom shoes is good for this... I prefer dancing in them since they are so much easier to dance in, but I don't know how the floor will be... I don't want to ruin my shoes... The sole is so hard to clean when it gets all crappy... =(

the floor should be carpeted - no hard dance floor.  wear what you like as far as shoes are concerned because comfort is always a good thing.  of course, if your costume requires different shoes, you might want to wear what would be appropiate for the costume.

I'm REALLY tempted to bring an actual ball gown that I have (it's black and white) and make up an ANBU mask from Michael's...hmmm....oh the possibilities. Heck, I'll even have long black gloves from one of my cosplays!!!

Yeah, you could, but do you realize how expensive those are? I mean, we're talking at least $100, at a minimum, and then you have to find the right size. Believe me, there was this one formal Chinese wear one year, and it was a half way decent price, but it didn't fit. That's the big problem.

So I'd say if you don't have time to MAKE a formal cosplay, just slightly adjust one of your present or past cosplays, or take a spin off by using formal wear you've already got. I'm doing that, and so far it's working out great.

Dont think I'm creative enough.  I have some "nice" clothes but duno if I want to bring them.  The fanciest thing I have would have to be my prom dress (havnt wore that in 4 years HA) which I'm not sure I could even fit into or if it'll be too much.

Besides I've wanted a kimono for a long time now.  this might be a good excuess to get one.  If you have any ideas to throw my way though, on adding things to regular clothes I'd love to listen to them.

I liked it better than the rave(s), honestly.  I just wish I had been able to make the dance lesson.

That's my suggestion for next year: make more opportunity for lessons.  Some of us have panels/contests/what have you to go to.  I'm not saying 24-7, but maybe three lesson periods spread throughout the day or something.
