Hi all. I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. We all know Fanime is just around the corner, and I'm uber pumped. My friends and I can't have a conversation without screaming "FANIME!" every few words, even if the topic is completely unrelated ¬_¬;; Anyway, I've been going to a ton of discussion boards to read about what people have done at cons in the past, and I've come across some verryyy strange stories. I hear(read) that people get hit on, glomped, and tackled (especially when they're in cosplay), and I've even heard one story where one person got his pants stolen by a group of squee-ing fangirls.
I just want to know, how often does this really happen? (I'm especially worried about the pants-stealing, if you couldn't tell by the title...)
This is actually going to be my second Fanime (or, actually, second convention overall) but the first time hardly counts since I didn't cosplay, had a headache the entire time, and barely went to anything.
Soon after, I discovered the boards, and, after reading them, I felt like I missed a lot. Ever since, I've been preparing for this year's and I'm hoping it'll be really fun :] That question's just been bothering me for a long time.

Things like that happen quite often, it just depends on where you are and who you are next to at any given moment. Ive had my fair share of adventures, dare I ask, what would you do for Pocky? However, everything is in good fun and most people wont do anything to actually hurt you, at least not on purpose.
Be ready for anything and a good time, because when you least expect it, expect it.
I can totally relate to you! I only attended Fanime for two days last year, even though I was registered for the whole weekend, and all I did was mostly walk around the dealer's room. ...Huge mistake.
In a few days, you and I will be attending not only our second Fanime, but also our second anime convention! Woot ^_^ I'm not too worried about glomped or getting my pants stolen (I'm always with at least one friend). I didn't receive anything last year, except for a few requests from a certain stranger for a hug. I'd laugh if I were to get hit on, because it usually doesn't happen too often for me.

LoL, I'd pay to see that, but I must say glomping is a everyday part of con life but the stealing of pants by fan girls, :lol: ... priceless.
They're girls, if they want your pants you should just give them to them. It would be rude not to.
the pants getting stollen is not that comen,(HA :lol: HA :lol: HA :lol: HA :lol: HA :lol: HA :lol: HA :lol: although I would pay to see it) but there are some crazy (and When I mean crazy, I mean "get them into a strait jacket NOW!!" kind of crazy) fans there. :shock:
1 even followed my freind all across the con because she was dressed as Soujirou (RK)

Perhaps if you find some transgender Dark Link with "Mei" on her badge (though you'd have to be very close to read it), feel free to say hi! I don't know. I rarely see stuff like that happen and I haven't had any experience with it myself. Fanime is a pretty big convention so you'll get all kinds of people. Just keep an open mind and an eye out for your personal well-being.
Be friendly and carry a 6ft sword.

Yeah during a staff meeting, we had another staffer complain about some person at the con last year who went around hugging random people and whatever....
But please.. no weapons.. this includes ninja stars, blow darts, steam roller, lance of longinus... etc etc...
In general, no, you won't get your pants stolen unless someone has a death wish. Those people mentioned probably were friends of the victim.

I have met people at the con that I first met on the forum. It's not that hard if you know what Photo shoot they'll be at. :P

Edit: Well, I'm back from Fanime. I neither was de-pantsed, nor did I see anyone get de-pantsed. I saw lots of people getting glomped, and "HUG ME" signs, though.
And I got a bunch of hugs, so that made me happy :3
Ok, so I've been to several fanimes in the past .. and I don't think I've ever quite noticed the hugging stuff going on before. Pardon me, but I'm going to go on a bit of a rant here.
I'll first make a disclaimer. I have nothing against people asking for or giving hugs, this world needs more love...
But... a few things struck me as rather disturbing about this new culture of "hugging"..
First, there is the random fangirl running and slamming into cosplayers... (thankfully, I didn't notice any guys running full speed at anyone) This doesn't seem like hugging to me, I believe there is a more appropriate word for it, tackling. Now I haven't experience it for myself, but it didn't seem all that enjoyable for the target being tackled.
Another thing, I don't know if this happened a lot, but I saw random dudes sneak up a girl, 'hug' and walk away. When I saw that, that creeped me out. Who knows what thoughts went through the victim's mind... To me, I wouldn't call that hugging either... I would call that copping a feel. And that isn't cool either... I mean if some creepy dude snuck up from behind and put his arms around me, I would deck him in the face... (shiver)
Anyways, like I said earlier, I think the people who actually interact with you on more than merely just a physical level are fine.
I don't know, anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Well, let me put it this way,
on the last night of the con, I had to pry a fangirl off of a Bayman because she wanted his Komoguro (she left fingernail marks in his arm. :shock: )
If I get glomped, it'd better be brilliant.
Like when I walked into the Dealers room on Monday, this guy said "Hey did you check this out" and I read it out loud... "GLOMP ME" [wham] x1, then [wham] x2. Now whoever thought that up really should've glomped whoever read it, it was well constructed. :P
OK, but that can be considered asult because there are allot of people who do not like to be touched and could easily be injured.
Well, last year I did see an incedent involving the loss of pants, but they were volenteered off to help with someones quest...They were trying to find the owner of those pants and a black tennie shoe... I don't konw the whole story but thats the jist of it!!!

JA! i was there, i was the big guy in teh black shirt with the kiki and coco gaia cats on my shoulders. i ended up giving her the pants from my Shrek cosplay that i didnt get to do, with ramen packets in the pockets.

the brown pants that were sewn onto the PJs were mine. she did have another pair by then.

random quest. we helped one guy get to starbucks, we were looking for an egg.... all kinds of stuff that happens after a few days without sleep.

Normally people ask you if they can glomp you. But yea, they practically tackle you XD I had a glomp me sign last year and nearly got tackled over a table ^^;
And about the pants thing: I know last year people were requesting pants...XD I didn't hear anything on the pants stealing, but I know someone 'donated' them...if not, then yup, they got them stolen XD
:D Ha! This reminds me of my early years at the Renaissance Faire in Marin (back when it still was IN Marin). Same stuff. Must be something about costuming that brings out the wacky in people.
last year in the middle of the night one of the nights some guys whent around getting pants off of people for a bunny girl cosplayer who needed them they got 10 pairs of pants 5 shirts and 3 shorts it was prity epic i herd so yeah stuff like that happens late at night
