Oops, I didn't see this until now or else I would've suggested some movies.

If you're still taking requests, I'd suggest:

White on Rice [Japan]
Overheard [HK]
Breathless [Korea]
Yang Yang [Taiwan] (not a personal favorite, but it's a good movie)
Fish Story [Japan]
All About Lily Chou-Chou [Japan] (maybe pre-2008?)
The Equation of Love and Death [China]
All Around Us [Japan]

I don't know what you've played in the last few years, so I apologize if there's any overlap.

Fish Story is already on the list.
All About Lily Chou-Chou is probably going to be one of the throwbacks we're showing.  (BTW that's 2001)
Overheard, I don't want to overload on Louis Koo.  He's already in a number of movies this year that are on the list.
Breathless is a "possible" on my list.
if I have a chance I'll look into yang yang, all around us, and the equation of love and death.  it's a tad last second though.

thanks for the suggestions.

cheers,

Things in the Universe / Re: James Cameron's Avatar
February 16, 2010, 11:10:23 AM
There's no need to harp on Cameron for his exploits away from the camera, there's plenty of fuel for the Avatar bonfire just by watching the movie.  My friends and I watched it opening night in 3D, and I had the "best" reaction to the movie.

Reaction:  You *have* to see Avatar in theaters for the experience, it's visually mind blowing.  That being said, it's also one of the most trite cliche piles of refuse that's been made in the last decade or so, it made me yearn for something new and exciting like a Uwe Boll movie.

Even James Cameron was surprised he won the Best Director award, he even commented he thought Katheryn Bigelow(The Hurt Locker) was going to win.

After that long of a production time, I'd have thought the man that made T2 would have brought more to the table than his mixed bag of stock characters.   The only thing more painful than the characters cliche-ness is their dialogue,  I have no idea how on Earth that was the best script he could come up with.  The core theme of the movie, take your pick white man's guilt or green guilt, can be traced back to any of the environmentally conscious Miyazaki movies; if Cameron's Smurfs had their ballsacks hanging out it'd be Pom Poko in space.  Realistically, if this movie hadn't been as visually stunning as it was, there would be nothing but talks about what a monumental failure of a film it is.  It's success only shows how eye candy is all that's really necessary to get people wooed nowadays.  His awards for the movies are proof enough of that.

Video Programming / Asian Film Room
February 02, 2010, 02:06:38 PM
Hi All,
I thought I'd make this thread to see if anyone had some good suggestions for Asian Films year.  I'll take suggestions til Feb 15th, after that squeezing anything in will be far too painful.  I'd have made this sooner, but really I only need a few films to round out my list.

Please don't suggest any movies pre-2008, or films that were shown in the last couple years.  I will not play Battle Royale.

Cheers,
Josh

Dealers Room / Re: Do Dealers Accept Credit Cards?
January 24, 2010, 11:01:08 AM
Last I had heard it was illegal to impose a fee for using credit over cash, hence you don't see it at gas stations like you used to in the late 80's.  Pretty sure Camilla was policing this last year, as it's a dealer's choice to accept those fees or to just be cash only.  Anyone know if this has changed?  Really with the economy the way it is everything is a buyer's market anyways.

Thought I'd add my exp from last year at the Fairmont.

The room was nice and spacious, room service is respectful of belonging placement, so you won't come back to a completely reorganized room.  The bathrooms are large, though they had a problem that the floor ends up a huge puddle when you take a shower.  The walk to the Fairmont was the dealbreaker for me, I'd go back if it weren't for it.  It may only be 2 blocks, but when you add in all the time and walking you do at the con, it really is a bit much.  Though admittedly being staff I'm on my feet for the majority of Thursday-Monday, so that may add to it.  Aside from the walk, though it's nice having the hotel locked to people w/o keycards, there's no problems with the elevators and the overall hotel is very quiet.

Rashamon (Which is a very good B/W film if I do say so myself)
Rashomon!! I love that movie. *o*

I agree with more "classic" Japanese cinema... I believe that most of the live-action films have been newer? If people are really interested in Japanese culture and media (especially film media, like live-action film and anime), then they should have the opportunity to see some classics as well as newer films. I would love to see some Kurosawa sprinkled throughout the live action schedule, at the very least. :D

While I adore a lot of Kurosawa films, the Asian film rooms have traditionally shown more accessible movies to shed light on asian (not strictly japanese) cinema in general.  That's why you'll note that the majority of films that have huge turnouts are either Anime live-actions or films that already have hype around them.  (Ie. Shaolin Soccer and Death Note)  Bran and I have had very little luck with the more artsy or serious films for that matter.  The problems of them being less accessibly aside, we can't show them anyways.  We have had zero luck getting any permission to show movies outside of companies who actually come to Fanime, below is a short list of examples of companies we'd have to contact for permission or risk being sued (since Fanime isn't a .org anymore).

Dreams: Warner Bros.
Ran: Rialto Pictures, Studio Canal, Criterion
Seven Samurai: Columbia Pictures

We tried contacting Sony Classic Pictures once (Sony's arthouse label) regarding showing 2046.  Their reply was we could play it if we paid them 1500$.  That's for a movie that grossed $1.4m in theaters in the US, which would have gotten it some free publicity, and possibly some DVD sales.  Needless to say, Bran and I got a good laugh at the concept of asking for $1500 from Fanime to show 1 movie.  Other companies just don't bother responding at all.

This year is going to be a royal pain since licensing asian films has become the thing to do so they can be converted into terrible American remakes (see: My Sassy Girl).  It will have new films, when possible, but will also include some throwback classics.
