Title: FANIME BANDS
Post by: Kegan_Flame on August 07, 2006, 04:51:24 PM
so i was thinking, people are always saying a bunch of stuff about the bands at fanime... bad and good things.... so i thought i would start a topic about who you want to see at fanime... and i am not talking world famous bands from Japan.. But maybe some good local bands?

I really want to see bands that tour the california scene alot. People that come to mind is Ramen and Rice, Akai Sky (saw them in Sac Anime, they were awesome), Random Ninjas, and Stephanie Yanez (since she performs with Random Ninjas as well).

No offense guys but don't you get tired of seeing the same old artists at ALL of the Anime conventions? I just saw Stephanie Yanez at Anime Vegas. She was cool but.... I've seen her at Ax too. Let's get some fresh blood in there! I'd like to see one or two bands from years past and some new bands as well. A good mix. Guitar Vader please!!!!!!

Guitar Vader is alive and well, and Shozo Ujuan is recuperating steadily. They definitely plan on hitting the USA soon.

Well, there's this new band out there I saw at Ani-magic. They were so awsome. They're called The Black Crystals. They did some really neat songs and it was even cooler to see the drummer also playing guitar and piano. (talk about multi-talented) I think they should play at Fanime too. They do some other songs that no one else does, and they make alternate versions. Like at Ani-magic, they made a punk version of Shell from Witch Hunter Robin and a Metal version of Canta per Me from Noir. I loved it. They said they'd make new versions of songs for ALA. I can't wait to see them there.

Post by: BSaphire on February 08, 2007, 07:34:46 AM
I would like to tell everyone that there are differences in musical guests just like there are differences in artists.

I have been sending emails to different people @ Fanime about a few musical artists that would like to perform and I haven't really gotten a response, so if someone in charge of booking musical guests would like that info then please feel free to contact me via email.

BTW... Marz broke up and the guys are still performing music, just not together. Zion & Kia have formed Metalphyzics and Jovette is doing it solo for now. They were absolutely AWESOME at JRock and I am very happy to have seen them perform ^^).

Artbeat did it again in January @ Sac Anime Con!!! They keep improving and WOW the fan girls loved em ^^)!

Rusika ROCKED Sac Anime in January and I think the guys are coming back in July ^^). Lisa Furukawa has such a beautiful voice and I can't wait to see her again too!

There are a couple of musical peeps that have been interested in Fanime, but will they be there? I hope so, but who knows who to contact anymore.....

Don't worry - I've been recording the names of everyone suggested.

And checking them out.

And budgeting for expenses when possible, and equipment rental.

And trying to set aside sound check and performance times in the schedule.

Plus there are around 20 "local" bands that want to play.

There are acts in Japan that are willing to come at their expense, so that's making the selection process incredibly complicated, too.

So, please be patient!  :D

Actually I should be apologizing- that was rather curt. Sorry for getting snippy.

But, yeah, there's just so much local talent that we can't fit everyone in. It's terrible because I seriously want to, and I hate having to turn people down as well.

I've set up a small committee to go over recommendations and such, and we're already looking at everyone you've mentioned. I'm hoping to finalize everything sometime in March, assuming all goes well.

As I am so fond of saying... Tony, "It's ALL GOOD! :P" We understand that it is a huge job and kudos for deligation ^^). I was wondering, ... is it possible to have musical guests divided so that some perform in one area and others in another....? If your Big names are on the main stage and some of the smaller ones can do something like a stage zero size stage in a different location? Maybe even a one day Music Fest on Saturday, all day long and into the night with the big headliners in the evening? One location all day music madness ^^)... just thoughts ^^)

Perhaps we can get albingdon school boys. That would be an awesome concert. Or Gazette!

TegoMassu was only a temporary unit though...NEWS is going to be coming back from hiatus soon (they're releasing a new single in April, I believe? or was it March...puwahaha I forget), so they'd probably concentrate on promoting NEWS instead, lolll.

he's probably become too major to make it now, but...  miyavi.  oh, miyavi.
Ellegarden
Drug Store Cowboy (have they officially disbanded...?  don't seem to be active since 04, and I can't find a wiki for them)
Anna Tsuchiya
Kimura Kaela
The Pillows
Guitar Vader
LOVE PSYCHEDELICO
BENNIE K
Aikawa Nanase
D[di:]
doremidan
Camino was pretty awesome when they came...  was it three years ago?
Merry
Metronome
Kagrra
Aya
Charcoal Filter

I know it's mostly Jrock, but I feel rock has a more interesting and energetic show than pop.

I don't know if any of these names are too big, but it's worth a shot, right?  I'm not asking for, like, Amuro Namie or Shiina Ringo or Dir en grey or Bonnie Pink or Nomiya Maki or Youjeen or Kirito  (much as I'd like to).

I'll probably think of more later >_>  But if any of these bands could come, it'd be amazing

I'd really like to know at least a sample of what bands we have lined up, because whether or not I attend this year will be greatly affected by it. Right now, I'm kind of iffy about whether I should attend. I want to meet my friends again, but I'm also totally broke, and I'm quite busy with school. But for a great MusicFest like we had last year, I'd definitely scrounge up as much as I can and try to hightail it back again this year. Last years con was slightly ruined for me when I staffed and missed all the major events, and also rooming with 4 strangers didn't help either. D: Can't just a few names of those likely to be shown be posted? Last year, the bands were announced quite early, and it seems to be a bit late this year.

I have to say, apart from my friends, the only reason I even attend Fanime is because of MusicFest. (Oh, and running around the convention center at 12 midnight giving people massages and freaking them out.)

I already made suggestions in the guests thread, but after seeing the suggestions here I REALLY need to say something. I'm seeing too many suggestions of bands who have already played at a bunch of different conventions, and I'd rather see bands who haven't had as many opportunities or no opportunities at all to play lots of conventions.

Lo:lita is one, and I haven't seen Artbeat play yet. Rusika is really good.

For japan-based bands, AN CAFE, hands down. Gazette's probably impossible to get, but they have high energy performances which are awesome. Oshare kei seems more universally appealling though, so I'm hoping Fanime gets either An Cafe, LM.C, Soroban., or Charlotte. Although it's probably too late to suggest these bands now.  :x

There goes MusicFest for me this year. I can't attend. Because...

FOMG. J-Rock Revolution is the same day. Miyavi, MUCC, Merry, Alice Nine, Vidoll, D'espairsRay, DuelJewel, and girugamesh are all playing on the 25th, and 26th, at 7:00 PM in LA.

It looks like, the main reason I go to Fanime is shot down. However, I know on Sunday, you guys have the bands play again, and sign stuff and such. Maybe I'll attend Fanime for a day. ;3

This makes me sad. We work really hard to throw a good show and by horrible coincidence, another concert is happening the exact same weekend as us. I can't blame people for wanting to go see bands that they love, but when you work so hard to put on a good show, and have your fans desert you...it sucks.

I hope that a good amount of people stay for MusicFest because the bands that we booked deserve the attention and praise for playing. They shouldn't get the shaft just because other bands are playing the same time they are.

I'm really interested in Crack6. I had the chance of seeing Karma at J-Rock Connection in November, but I would still like to support them.

There's probably a good chance that I will swing by on Sunday. It is a bad stroke of luck, since I really really was looking forward to MusicFest this year, but this new event just takes the cake. D:

I really wish J-Rock Revolution wasn't being held that weekend because I really do feel sorry for the bands at MusicFest. They came all the way out here to perform only to be overshadowed by bigger bands showing up.

However I think, probably many people will stay and attend MusicFest, since Fanime is not really made up of a large majority of J-Rock Fans. Most of the people are there for the anime, manga, Artist's Alley and such, and they will be able to stay for MusicFest (if they can pry themselves away from the Video rooms xD). Only the few die-hard J-rock fans will be absent most likely.

Quote from: "Pimpstress Rei"This makes me sad.

To tell you the truth alot more than that are gonna be absent. Because this concert is a MAJOR concert and it kinda over powers Fanime. Because the fan-base for the other bands such as; alice nine., Kagrra, Miyavi, DuelJewel, Vidoll, MUCC, girugamesh, Merry, Déspairs Ray. Above the bands that are playing.. THE price. $60 for all those bands for over the span of 2 nights... It's like.. wow. So.. I really do hope that people don't abandon Fanime and MusicFest. I already know of atleast 5-8 people who are... So... As sad as it is.. We can't do anything about it...

Further more; I don't believe that it's 100% real.. To actually pay for those artists to get over here... that would be alot.. and with ticket prices that cheap.. :sigh: I dunno..

I'm pretty sure it's real. Yoshiki is the one organizing it after all. And $60 isn't that cheap. Sure, it's a good price, but it's not excessively cheap. They're probably expecting a lot of people, and they're right to.

But most people don't go to Fanime for the concert. I mean like last year. I was totally pumped about MusicFest, and when I got there, THERE WAS NO ONE THERE. Like, all the fans just decided to ignore it. And then I went to check out Der Cosplay or whatever that thing is where people cosplay and run around on the stage, and the place is FREAKING PACKED. I just could NOT comprehend how that many people could attend that event and totally ignore MusicFest. So while I'm not sure how many people are going to attend MusicFest, I would say all in all, the attendance of the con isn't going to be very affected by this concert. 75% of the fans that go to Fanime probably don't even know what J-Rock is. They're only interested in anime, and running around in costume. A good number of the con members also live around the con, and that's why they can attend. Their parents might not let them attend something that's hours away, so they will probably just settle for Fanime.

You'll probably be missing the J-Rock fans, those who are mildly interested in J-Rock who live near LA, and any new attendees that were going to attend this year because of MusicFest. The anime fanbase will be safe, and that's the majority of the people who attend the con. Just promote MusicFest even more this year to those who are already attending the con, and get them to check out the event.

Yeah, when I first heard the news about this a while back, I was seriously hoping that they were going to postpone it. I know a few people who helped plan this event, and they told me that there was a chance it was going to be postponed, but I guess they decided not to. Oh well.

But I do have to agree with Long on this one...only the super huge die-hard JRock fans will be missing from Fanime, but I don't think this will affect Fanime's general attendance.

But I know that there are a few Norcal JRock fans who can't/won't go because they're a) too young and their parents won't let them to go to LA, and/or 2) too dead broke to make the trip, or 3) not major VK fans and aren't too keen on making the trip. sooo I'm sure there will be some Jrock fans left for us at MusicFest...

I just hope that they aren't bitter about not being able to make JRock Revolution though because all our MusicFest bands really deserve a super awesome audience and not one that has people grumbling about how they have to 'settle' for MusicFest when they'd rather be at JRR.

...so those of you who can't make it to JRR in LA and come to MusicFest...please, please, please show your love, ne? ^^;; Crack 6, MECHANiCAL PANDA, ZZ and Karma Shenjing are alllllll great bands, and they'll definitely put on amazing shows :)

Wow, it's even being talked about here O.o

Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed because I can't go to Jrock Revolution. It's too far away ;_; so I'll end up going to Fanime but even that decision rides on something else. Man, all these things I want to go to but I can't *punches wall*.

I was planning to go to fanime since I`ve been going from the start in 1994, but It seems that the guest of honors for the past two years is the same people or uninteresting. If I have the money and time to the JJR in L.A. The con staff need to get it together because doing and anonncing guest less than 3 months from the con is BS. Since I`m a VK fan I`m willing to down to LA to see them. And the reason few people went to the music fest last year is because nobody`s hear of the bands or the description of the band in the program did interest people like me.Anyway I hope the con starts getting better guest or I just take my time and money to Sakura con next year instead.

...uninteresting guests???

I guess that's all about personal preferences and whatnot, but showing a little appreciation for people who take their time to come out to Fanime is the least anyone can do. Er, that's called being respectful. (and btw, people from the industry DO read these boards, so try not to offend anyone if you want more guests to come over :P )

As for announcing guests a few months before...sometimes these things can't be helped. You can't announce guests until negotiations are complete & contracts are signed, and that can be a lengthy process within itself. Even then, circumstances can change, which can then be out of the staff's control, so I don't think it's fair to put all blame on staff members.

Having the audacity to tell staff members to 'get it together' truly does appall me. Even when things aren't being announced on the website, they ARE working hard to put together this awesome event, and if you really don't like how things are right now, then why don't you join and try to help out as a staff member or a volunteer? The only way to understand how to help run an event is to actually go behind the scenes and put some work into it, and you'll definitely see that it isn't as easy as it may seem :P

Last year the bands were announced fairly early. It may be just me, but I have a lot more interest in unknown bands than those that you know already. Mainstream bands tend to have the same sounds and quite frankly, they bore me. I really loved Swinging Popsicle and MotherCoat last year. And I also loved ZZ and the other bands the year before! They're great new sounds and after you hear them, you should feel glad that you discovered a new band. It doesn't matter if they're the most famous bands out there. What's that matter if they're uninteresting. You should always give something a try.

One reason I'm choosing JRock Revolution over Fanime this year, is because I've already heard Karma Shenjing and ZZ. The other band I was interested in was Crack6 for obvious reasons, but I want to see JRR because it happens to be a milestone event in International J-Rock.

Before you're so quick to pass off bands without listening to them, research them on the web first, and test out their sounds. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't mind if you left this con and went somewhere else. They don't need people like you around stinking up the place anyway. ;3

Long, being a vetern of Fanime I`ve been to a lot of Fanime cons and most of them I enjoy so I didn`t take some of what I say lightly.I should of said live programing staffer instead of just staff.I wanted to see Karma Shenjing again since I haven`t seen them since 2005.I my still go to fanime if I don`t have the time or money for JRR.Also if anyone dosn`t like my opinon thats ok I have talk to my friend who were making the same complaint that I posted. We feel that the attendance my go down from last years total.Anyway I hope that everything at Fanime goes well.

Sorry. My malevolent side came out there for a bit. D: However, it's not certain that I will raise enough money by the time JRR rolls around, so I might not be able to attend anyway. :x But then again, if I don't have money for JRR, then I certainly don't have money for Fanime, (since I live in Sacramento, it costs a lot either way. Dx )

@lifey: I agree. I totally love MusicFest as well. But then again, I mainly loved it because I could experience brand new J-rock bands there. Most of the bands that are attending this year, I've already experienced, while I haven't experienced the bands at JRR yet (obviously xD).

@ultramangaia: Sorry for jumping on you like that. I forgot that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I guess it felt to me like you were attacking the con, and I don't normally tolerate people attacking things without grounds.

I'm not a huge anime fan, but I am a huge J-rock and J-pop music fan. Frankly, I would choose the fanime concert over Yoshiki's extravaganza, mainly because Crack 6 is so fantastic. They are fresher, hipper and more dynamic (and a lot more fun besides)  than any of the visual kei bands that are going to be in L.A. I like visual kei, too, and those are some great bands, but fanime doesn't have to be ashamed of their lineup at all!

I am so excited that Crack 6 is going to be at fanime!

I WANT CRACK6 TOO. But I also want to see Merry! ;___; And on a lesser scale I want to see MUCC, and D'espairs Ray. So... Added together they equal more than Crack6 unfortunately. But then again I fairly had my share of "fresher, hipper and more dynamic (and a lot more fun besides)" when I went to see Thee Out Mods at SF a couple of weeks ago. FOMG. They were so good. FANIME MUST HIRE THEM OUT SOME TIME OR ANOTHER. They are... SERIOUSLY... THE SHIT. x3

Er... Ah, thanks... I think. ^^;;

And it's too late for me to sell it on eBay, because I can't put it up for a fixed price unless I have 10 feedback points or whatever, and I only have one. xD The minimum amount of time for an auction would be three days and that's way too late. But someone wanted it so I gave it to them, so that's set. ^^

Awww..

I was looking at the venue again, and it seems we're doing it in that little room this year. I know MusicFest doesn't exactly fill up the seats, but I really liked having it in that large venue building, with the huge stage, and second floors, and lovely architecture. Why are we doing it there this year?

I don't think it's going to be very much fun packed into that tiny room. >__>

I don't think it's the same "tiny" room as last year. The shows I saw were in the dance room (room B). Room J is where they have opening/closing ceremonies and it holds a lot more people. If you look on the convention center map it almost twice the size of room B.

Check out the floor plan:

Not sure why we didn't get the Concert hall, but I believe Tony said there was some sort of an issue. Don't remember what thread I saw that in though.

Ah. That's where they held the Gaia panel one year, and also was a video room another year.

I was thinking it was room B like last year. It's a fair size, but it's going to be a disappointment in comparison with the concert hall atmosphere.

I just checked out the ZZ concert tonight and the room is vey cool. No seats, and the stage is set up long ways in the room. The stage is at good height so it's easy to see the band. The have 2 large screens on the sides and a big sound systems.

You can get real close to the stage and the standing area makes the room seem full even with a small audience.

I think they did an awesome job on the room! Can't wait for Crack 6!
