Video Programming / FMV Pre-Show videos 2014
May 25, 2014, 03:29:46 PM
We got a lot of inquiries during the show for the videos that we featured in the pre-show this year, and I mentioned to the people who asked that I'd list them here on the Fanime Forums. Not sure where a download is available and I can't in good conscience simply provide a submission for our competition, so hopefully you'll be able to track these down if you want to re-view them.

Killing the Kill - Flame X
Bad Dog - TritioAFB
Deceiving Angels - HiikariAMV
It's Free Real Estate - Chest Hair
Iwatobi Weather Service - Nekokitkat
Ethereal Horizon - Justin Phillip Yin
Pamplemousse - Pieandbeer

The FMVs will begin seating at approximately 1pm on both Friday and Saturday in Video 1 and Video 2 (Film and Industry Rooms). Please arrive at or before 1 to make sure you get a good seat and so you don't miss any amazing videos! The show will be identical on both days, so if you miss Friday's, come to Saturday's! All attendees and editors are welcome to vote for this year's audience winners. Tell us who your favorites are, and make an editor's day! You are also welcome to vote on both days if you'd like to.

The awards show will be held at Stage Zero on Sunday from 2-3pm. We'll be showing the winners from each category as well as best in show and delivering prizes to the winning editors in attendance.

I don't really mind the schedule being last minute, as long as it's ready at least before Thursday of the con. Also, as long as they print paper schedules, I'll be good to go. Usually I spend Thursday night planning which panels/events/etc to attend anyways.

This would be a good way to spend the time waiting in line for our badges. Day 0 has pretty much evolved to the point where I'm pretty much resigning myself to staying in line for the entire day and doing nothing interesting like the swap meet or anything else open that day. Might as well bring chairs and enough food to last an apocalypse so I'm not one of the people who faint or can be in a position to help the people who faint while dealing with this BS.

Quote from: InsaneChan on March 17, 2014, 02:16:39 AMBut now it's been over a week since the declaration that the site launch would be "soon." After 8 days, "soon" is becoming less relative. 9 weeks until the con and still no website? If it isn't up in the next 3 days, I'm officially calling it quits. I'm done. This is ridiculous. This is unfair to us. This is unfair to the guests of honor. No one giving the con as much money as I do (and have for the past 10 years), as everyone does, deserves this. AX has a site, they have guests announced, they don't make up lame excuses, they don't blame their lack of quality guests on the FANS, they have everything going for them. I'm attending AX from now on.

I am a person who likes to plan, and I hate the anxiety Fanime has inflicted upon everyone waiting for info for AA, the site, everything.

I'm in total agreement, and this just makes me sad. If the con is supposed to be by fans for fans, then fans would know enough to not put other fans through this hell. Guests should be set, the website should be set, so many other things should already be set up but they're just stagnating. AFAIK we don't even have a Guest of Honor set up yet for 2014. Meanwhile, I'm looking at Saboten, which is only in it's second year of operations, and they've already got a full guest list 5 months before the con even starts.

Pisses me off especially to hear rumors that some of the staffers are only 'staffing' because they're able to attend for free.

This is Fanime. This is one of the biggest cons on the West Coast. It should be setting an example for other cons, but instead it looks like a flat-out embarrassment to be loyal here. This is the 20th anniversary for the con - the last few years better not indicative of this year or I'm with you. This might be the last year I attend Fanime and stick closer to home with AX.

So my cousin is a little scared to ask but me and my 2 cousins are going to Fanime this year and he was wondering if even though he is 17 will he be able to get in by having my other cousin with him who is 21 years old or if he can call his mom and have her give permission, if Hentai night/room whatever it is will be featured this year. Thanks for the help with this question

I'm honestly unhappy with the way everything was handled. A line for another line which was for another line for another line? Stop me before I make an Xzibit meme. Too late, someone already did. http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3ukb6l/

I do like that pre/early reg had different badges than people who buy on-site, but printing our names on a sticker and then slapping it onto a blank card? What.The.Hell. Quote sad1sttimeattendee who may not be coming next year thanks to this fiasco:

Fanime, you're hosting this convention in the middle of Silicon Valley. The place where new technology and innovation is the hallmark. Yet, why can't you integrate that into the registration/badge pick-up process?

I know that everything is kind of a mess - you have the convention center under construction, you've got to handle the registration about a block away in another hotel, and there are huge masses of people to take care of with only a handful. Honestly speaking, I wouldn't mind having my badge held hostage for a few hours while I helped out, be it keeping the peace with the hallways/lines, helping find the proper badges, checking people in, or whatever the hell needs to be done. I also don't think I'm the only one.

And seriously guys, you're not giving us incentive for pre-registering anymore. Used to be that we could be in and out of the line in less than an hour with a shiny badge that had our name personalized on it, now it's a pre-made card with a simple printed out sticker. We're in a line that's comparable to the line of people who are buying theirs on-site instead of supporting you guys ahead of time. The only real advantage was once we got inside the line moved a little faster due to not needing to sign some electronic sheets (also, only 6-7 computers there too? We're in the Silicon valley FFS), that was it.

Luckily he submitted to Anime-expo, where it was required to give them your full name, address, and phone number lol

I'd forgotten about that. Welp, yeah, that's kind of put a dead stop to his entries, unless he goes through someone else.

Part of me feels bad, but I'm more mad. You don't blatantly steal (a lot of) footage like that and claim it to be your own. That's not right in any sort of way, and I am glad this is getting out in the open. Does make me wonder if you're not the only person who's had their work taken - a lot of his footage did look spotty early on in the video.
#28
Chucking in my vote with matthewgutz's side. Watched the videos myself last night with the worry that I wouldn't be able to tell exactly what was taken and what wasn't, but it was clear as day. The list with the changes/non-changes matched exactly with the timing that was provided. Many of the changes/non-changes were so painfully obvious it hurt, like the mask to the character with an eyepatch while another is riding a bike into the night.

Managed to grab a copy of the vid for evidence as well if need be. Also saved the page for the video information if he pulls it down from AMVs.org. I can provide both if needed.

Just saying as another editor (I wanted to enter this year, but chose not to so I could focus on my finals), this sort of behavior is disgraceful, and if Vlad gets wind of this I wouldn't surprised if we never see another video make it to the finals in almost any con from this editor again. Sorry you've had your editing and footage ripped off, gonna re-iterate Bm-Atticus and hope that this gets dealt with quickly.

Video Programming / 2013 FMV Rules?
January 23, 2013, 10:34:21 PM
Pretty much what the title says - I'm hoping to get started on my video for this year soon, but I do want to know if there are certain rules and/or themes to keep in mind with the entries.

Also, is Jose still going to be the coordinator this year?
#30
That's also the wrong one for the "No Soul, No Light" (that was mine).  Hasn't been uploaded nor submitted anywhere besides Fanime, so me and Jose/the AMV staff should have the only copies.

It'll be online eventually, but I may do some tweaks first.
#31
So, uh, yeah. I got the notification that you guys received my video, but I haven't gotten any further e-mails. Nothing in my inbox or my spam folder. Please give me a heads up soon, feeling really anxious about it.

Registration / Re: Pre-Reg Closed...
April 03, 2010, 08:03:41 PM
This is a pretty depressing situation.  I thought it was going to be a situation of the price of the pre-reg going up, not it closing, period.  Guess it was a misunderstanding on my part, but this seriously sucks, especially having it happen two years in a row.

And as for cutting the pre-reg date off when it\\\'s a month away -- it happens on Memorial Day weekend, at the end of the month, which means it should be cut off in late April, not at the end of March, and early reg can be done throughout the months of April and May leading up to the con.  But hell, getting to this point, it just feels like we\\\'re arguing semantics rather than anything else.

Video Programming / Re: Fanime 2010 FMV Rules!
December 11, 2009, 09:05:58 PM
Please, PLEASE, God, don't make us sit through about an hour and a half of nothing but action videos.  Back in 2008, people were just getting up and leaving even before my studio's work got on-screen.  I didn't even bother going to the competition this year, got incredibly burned by Sean and the damned theme system he implemented.

Plus his whiplash response to everyone's outcry was to downsize everything to only an hour and a half in 2009 - should have been about two and a half to three hours with the videos evenly dispersed throughout; 40 minutes per category, I think.  That's at least how I remember 2007 and the years before.

Good luck with the competition this year, really looking forward to it!

Hi everyone.
Sorry for the concern, but there has been a single change to this contest that I'm sure no one will complain about. Since FanimeCon's members are so awesome, we have been working with our NEU BAUHAUS LLC contact and have been able to increase the number of tickets from 2 to many more. ;)

So for those that think that our servers were hacked or compromised, they were not. None of your data has been leaked/given out/sold/etc./etc. and if you received an email from me* you did win. If you still are unsure, you can send a follow up email to (and/or marketing@fanime dot com). :P

*I know that the contest rules stated that the email would be coming from marketing@fanime dot com but due to a mailing snafu, the email ended up coming from my FanimeCon email address. Rather than send a second email (and possibly cluttering up your busy email boxes even more), I just decided to leave it alone. :)

Whew, alright.  Thanks for clearing it up, Milton, the entire thing did have me just the tiniest bit worried when my girlfriend called and told me that she had won as well.  The odds were kind of astronomical...but I digress.  I'm with Michimichu - how do we obtain our tickets?  I know we're supposed to be on the guest list; does that allow us to cut in line?  XD
#35
I actually won too...and so did my girlfriend who notified me about the contest.  Did you guys all receive the e-mail at 6:08 AM?

I'm a little worried now, because "Milton" has my cell phone and home phone number...

Whatever happened to "Judge not, lest ye be judged?"  I think they really ought to follow their own beliefs before condemning people about however they would wish to live their lives.  Good to hear that they did get the anonymous treatment from the con's assortment of /b/-tards though.

And besides, I've personally turned to Jesus already.  Every single damn time I went to the elevator hall on the second floor of the Marriot.

I heard he did go out, but he should have put on a raptor-mask and then gone out for the lulz.

Hi
I just returned from my first FANIME CONVENTION ,and the one thing that irritated me the most was the
registration process.
For 30.00 per person per day,I CAN NOT CONCEIVE WHY ANY PERSON HAS TO WAIT 2 HOURS ON 4 LINES TO GET REGISTERED.
Perhaps you can streamline the process to 1 line.

You said it yourself; this is your first Fanimecon.  You should have been here years ago and seen what everything was like before they got it down to what it's like today.  It's really quite a remarkable change.

QuotePerhaps you can place a simple sentence on your web page and say that on line registration may
reduce wait times on line markedly at the Fanime Convention.Today I waited 1.5 hours on the first line.
I could have avoided the first line wait time if I registered on line. The other 3 lines were shorter.

o_O  Why?  It makes sense and it should be a GIVEN that someone who registered online and AHEAD of time would be able to get through the entire headache of registration and having to wait in line.  Don't understand?  Then enjoy the lines.  I don't see why you should be complaining anyhow; you're in a line with other people who share the same interest as you, the same passion as you when it comes to anime.  It's not gonna be heard to pick up a conversation with someone else who's waiting with you and pass the time.  And given that you're into Naruto...well, have fun talking to about 25% of the con and undoubtedly the lines.

QuoteI notice that perhaps 75% of the people attending the event were younger than 20.For the admission
price of 30.00 per day ,I would expect that this is a lot of money for them to spend on this event and I
personally believe we should expect better customer service.

Yeah.  Sure.

We're getting the con at the expense of volunteers who are giving their time to us.  It's for fans by fans, and they do what they can, which to me is a remarkable amount.  It's people who are like us, not people who are a faceless corporation trying to make cash from us fans.  Let's respect their limitations and enjoy the con, ne?
#38
Planning on doing a Isshin cosplay (a short version of him, actually >_>) either in the suit he wore to Masaki's grave or if I can make that weird badge he had on in one of the recent manga chapters, I'll be him in shinigami form.  Gotta grow a beard though.  Might do the 7th division vice captain too if I get my sunglasses before the con.
#39
I need to rewatch Eva again.  After I find two of the DVDs.  >_>  Same goes for Cowboy Bebop.  But it's always fun to go back and rewatch the first Ghost in the Shell movie.  That stuff is simply mind-boggling.
