Trying to get into the habit of making sure the thread is constantly updated this year, I've decided to move the weekly Anime Openings posts that we had on the Facebook Event Page, to the Fanime Forums thread as well!  Generally these will be one OP per week (usually on Friday) right up until Fanime, along with any gathering updates for the week.

I'll be around more than that for general replies and updates and so forth, this is more to ensure I meet my obligation as gathering host and that I'm super easy to get a hold of on here.  Yeah, today is Thursday but let's kick things off a little early!

With the Cosplay Gatherings Department starting to get ready for 2017, look for more Old School Cosplay Gathering information here in January.  I've created a Facebook Event Page (link in first post) and while Friday at 6pm is my target time, the day and time should be considered tentative until the gathering form is online and the submission has been approved.

Ahhh I don't know yet what my schedule is/if I'll be attending this gathering/what I'll be wearing, but I had a great time last year and hope to be there again!!

Thank you again very much for attending last year and for your comments!  I plan on having a much better handle on things for 2017.  Funny thing is I still don't know what I'll be wearing for Fanime yet, or the day specifics at least.

After fiddling around with my lineup, I've decided to finally do Kagura from Azumanga Daioh. And since the manga came out in 1999, I feel she qualifies for this gathering. So I'll be there again! ^^

Thank you to everyone who attended in 2016!  The plan for 2017 is to move the gathering an hour later to allow more people to attend due to hotel check-ins and the Friday workday.  I'm going to aim for 6PM - 7PM for 2017.  I also plan on having a much larger list for the photography order. THANK YOU again to gathering attendees who suggested some outstanding photography groupings!!

Greetings old school cosplayers!  Last year's Old School Gathering was a blast, thank you all for your amazing attendance and awesome cosplay!  It really meant so much to me as this was my first time hosting this (or any) cosplay gathering.  Continuing the tradition of the gathering that got me into cosplay, I announce the...

Fanime 2017 Old School Cosplay Gathering!

Come celebrate the rich history of Japanese entertainment culture!

This is a hugely open gathering for those of you / us who cosplay as characters from the previous century.  Essentially if your cosplay character appears in Anime, Manga, Video Games or Live Action (resident beings of Nebula M78 are welcome) pre-2001 on back, then this is the gathering for you! Although I like to have a decidedly Japanese lean to this gathering, it is not completely exclusive.


Day : Friday, May 26th (Day 1)
Time : 6PM
Meeting Place (MP) : Same as Location.
Location (L) : Gatherings G2, Tiered Platform (1st floor lobby by East stairs)

Please note we will be at a different location than last year due to The Hub no longer being available for gatherings, however we're literally ten seconds away from last year's gathering location.

Gatherings G2 is the left wooden platform stair area, alongside the staircases when you first walk in the main entrance of the Convention Center.


Cosplayers : If you would like, please post who your cosplay character is, what title it is from and what year you are representing!  As this gathering is a total wildcard mix of different characters, series, studios, and genres - spanning time rather than properties - a definitive list is otherwise not provided.  Part of the fun of the OSG is seeing just who shows up.


Legal Statement : Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.


Photography Order : - timeline shots will be WAY easier this year due to the new location's tiered platforms.  Additionally if there is any specific setup or shot you would like, just let me know!  This gathering is to celebrate all of us as cosplayers who keep the vintage fire alive.

Some people posted here last year that they had problems with him not delivering goods and then dropping off the face of the Earth after FanimeCon 2015 but conversation about it on the forums fell silent.

I was pretty shocked that he was welcomed back for 2016, seemingly still not publicly addressing if the 2015 problems were resolved.  Guess there are still problems.

Do we have any estimate on when gatherings photos are going to be up? It's been almost a month, just curious.

I asked on this, we are hoping, hoping being the key word, that we will have them up in a month, maybe 6 weeks. I am trying to see what I can do to help, but only can do so much.

Yup, that's the place to go.  They recently re-opened after some renovations.

I just want to further emphasize that you guys hit it out of the park this year in regards to older titles - Iria, Otaku no Video, a midnight showing of Lily C.A.T., Macross Plus, Super Dimension Century Orguss, Ghost Sweeper Mikami, His and Her Circumstances, Wicked City, 4am showing (outstanding) of Perfect Blue in the Film Room, Robot Carnival, Area 88, Patlabor The Movie in the Film Room (my all time favorite Anime film), Golden Boy, AD Police - and that's just the stuff I like.  Extremely impressive.

Great job this year with an awesome assortment of titles!  I mentioned in my general Fanime Feedback submission that if there is one change I could suggest, if possible, it would be to turn around the first bank of rooms so that the back hallway feeds into all video rooms.  That way the doors would be more isolated from general convention noise and light from outside.  Robot Carnival on Monday got turned off early before the film was over, even with about a dozen people in the room saying that it wasn't over and to keep it going, but small potatoes.  Aside from that, just the usual stuff to leave the computer and projector alone when a video is running as it can be disorienting to those watching the screen.  Awesome time in the video rooms this year.

Hi everyone, thank you for coming out for this year's Gaming Hall *AND* Late Night Game Room!

Games Management and departments have entered post 'Con and review mode. We'll take some feedback in this thread specific to our two gaming locations, tournaments etc. We're open to ideas and opportunities to continue improving the 24 hr gaming hall and expanding what we can do with the late night game room.

A bank of 6 - 10 candy cabs would be nice in the arcade, running 80's - 90's boards such as two player run-and-guns, classic games, etc.  All the big loud rhythm and experience type games are great but I would like to see a small nod to the stuff before that and something like a row of Taito Egret or Astro City cabinets would also lend themselves to a Japanese aesthetic.

Some of this is copied / paraphrased from what I submitted to the general Fanime 2016 convention feedback form.

Cosplay Gatherings Department was awesome.  I've heard some didn't like where the gatherings table was but I thought it was perfect as it was highly visible and in the heart of the gatherings locations outward spread.  It was also in a place where it was just quiet enough to have a conversation with the staff at the table.  This is the first year I've hosted a gathering and although I was a bit under the weather, CGD staff was outstanding in providing a photographer and making check-in a breeze.

My hosted gathering (Old School) had a great turnout and I think a big portion of that was really thanks to the Cosplay Gatherings Department having a clearly laid out and easy to read schedule and asking for Facebook events pages during gatherings submissions.  The Facebook event page made it so easy to universally promote the gathering online and without this suggestion of the Cosplay Gatherings Department, I probably wouldn't have made one.

The gatherings submission process to be on the official list was super easy - everything was smooth, logical, and a lot of fun.  CGD staff was also amazing during the run-up to the convention with keeping everyone informed about the gathering process and any changes.  Also being very active here and on Facebook with addressing fan concerns and requests and attempting to address any questions from cosplayers and convention attendees.

Cosplay Gatherings Department made something I was nervous about, hosting a gathering, and made it something I looked forward to most at the convention this year - and had a great time being a part of and want to continue with in the future.

If a list of requested supplies for the cosplay hangout pops up, that would be great, even if just a general list.  Throughout the year I always have crazy coupons for the craft stores that I end up tossing if there's nothing I need at the time, and I would like to use those toward picking up supplies to donate for next year.
