Panels and Workshops / Re: Nerd Courting, 2018

Nice! My Friend is bringing three this year, His most ever, and he is trying to figure out when and where to wear them depending on the day and weather. Such a first world and odd problem lol. But I see how it can be an issue. I do always wonder how the people who bring a ton handle it, but it is what it is.

I have never been into the competition side much outside of going to the masquerade when I first started going, but I haven't gone in years. But, the little I do know about it is that it gets incredibly time intensive and expensive. Not sure if you remember this guy, but for a few years running, a guy was walking around in an era accurate full leather armor set made from real leather that he commissioned from an armorer in Texas. It was $10,000 for the suit and his helm alone was $5,000 do ti ti being a one off piece. It was insane.

Yeah, I Don't blame you for not wearing those old Cosplays as much. They may be amazing, but the materials used were not the best to wear. Of course, that was true of a lot of cosplay back then. It was a lot of making things just work as there was hardly any guides and everyone was just making it up as they went along. Now there is five million guides on everything. I do not miss those times even if looking back on them are wonderfully nostalgic.

I remember only making it to Nerd Courting in 2016 and I could tell you were just beat during it. I mean, you still did amazing, but you just looked incredibly tired and I have no idea how you kept it going until like 3 in the morning. Really wish I had made it to your Cosplay: Overdoing it panel as I am sure that was amazing as well. You have alaways been an amazing propr and costume creator and I look forward to the Mordin Puppet in 2019. I hear you on work making it hard to find time for making Cosplays. I just graduated this last December and am working full time while trying to break into my field of Accounting. Between work and job hunting, I find I have even less time than when I was working and going to school. It's a weird conundrum. You bringing any cosplays at all or are you just chilling this con?

I missed one year as well, but I have been going since 1999, my sister has missed none so this will be her 19th Fanimecon. Crazy to believe how much has changed since then. I hope you saw the pictures someone posted of Fanimecon 2005 in the facebook group. such a nostalgia trip. That was my first year going every day and also my first year going to your panels. you were doing a Cosplay panel with CCRStars and brought up a bunch of props. I will never forget the Knives Drape coat. also the beach ball shoulder is classic. I hope you still have those.

You should hit up Cosplay in America, He is going to be at Fanimecon. He always loves hearing from people who have been going to cons for a long time and people who have been cosplaying that long as well. Speaking of cosplay, Anything you doing for this year?

Hey Adam,

I think you will get a lot more responses on facebook than here, but I definitely plan on at least stopping by for a little bit. It is always such a good panel about dating, relationships, and just life in general. This is my 18th Fanimecon and I am always happy to see your panels on the program guide. I look forward to seeing you there!

I know they will go fast, it is just the nature of the convention given how big it is. I just think it will help a little with the huge crush of everyone grabbing them as i said in the second part of my post. It certainly couldn't hurt and i imagine it wouldn't require too much of change to the current system.

I have seen the idea floated elsewhere, but i haven't seen a thread about it unless I am missing it somehow. I have seen it discussed on the facebook page a bit, figured i would bring it up here as it is the official Forum for the convention.

I think it would be a great idea as right now anyone can book a room and it doesn't cost them anything to do so. I think it would be a great way of alleviating some of the hotel opening stress as it would make people really think about if they are really going to Fanimecon or not. I have been on the wait list for rooms before in the past and have seen people posting online that they are willing to sell a reservation as they got in and booked a whole bunch of rooms, but don't plan on going themselves. Also, i have always gotten a room from the wait list as it seems that once Fanimecon gets closer and becomes a more real thing on the horizon. People either cancel due to not having the money or just canceling because no one wanted the room anyways.

Just my two cents, wondering what everyone else thinks :)

They pretty are simple, it's just that you(and others) are trying to complicate things. Don't make "Glomp me" signs or other stuff.

What is complicated about this?

There is nothing complicated at all about this. It is just that people will always find ways of bending the rules and creating technicalities that allow them to continue to do what they want to do. I wish it was possible to come to some kind of consensus, but that would require polling everyone at fanimecon and that is not possible.

As other have said, the rules sometimes aren't exactly enforced as strictly as they should be and there is wiggle room sometimes. I think it is partially on the staff to come up with truly concrete rules about what is and isn't allowed. I know they already exist, but the staff sometimes let things slide and the volunteers sometimes don't know the rules exactly. so, you can't really rely on them too much because they aren't given enough time to really memorize and know the rules.

I honestly don't see this debate ever really ending as it all depends on people's point of view.

Just working and saving money for the next school semester and chilling with friends mostly.
Also going to take a summer poetry class at Chabot College if you know where that is.

General Convention Discussion / Re: Fanime Hotels
May 31, 2008, 10:13:51 AM
I have stayed at the Hilton, the hotel right across the street from the hilton, and the Sainte Claire. All of them were pretty nice and the rooms aren't too bad as long as your reserve it via the fanimcon website when they post it. My room at the sainte claire this year was only $99 a night, which is pretty good and not that bad if you have someone to split the cost with. The hilton is nice because it is attached to the convention center itself, but none of the hotels are ever too far away from Fanimecon. So just go with what you can afford.

I don't think this debate will ever truly end, but I think we also have to take into account the average age of Fanimecon's attendees. I have noticed that there is a lot more high school age and below kids coming to Fanimecon and they genrally aren't as mature as the older attendees.

I also believe that as a whole the Anime Fandom's average fan age has gone down as anime and manga have become more easily accessible. You can get manga in almost any bookstore and all major electronics stores carry at least some anime dvds. Hell, look at how huge the manga section is at Borders and Barnes and Nobles.  Then you also have to take into account the even easier access to content online via torrents, youtube, crunchy roll,  etc.

As the fans get younger, you start running into the "rebelious" teens that always believe the "man" is out to get them, even though they are just trying to make sure they don't hurt themselves. Sure Fanimceon will still mostly be an event that draws really hardcore fans, but you will always have the casual fans that come for a day and may not really care that what they are doing is hurting the con experince for others.

I am not saying that all young fans behave that way, hell I am only nineteen myself. In general, I beleieve having a fanbase that is getting younger is a good thing because that means more people are getting into it at a younger age and it generally is seen as a sign of growth in the fandom.

Whoa what a Memorial day weekend, I needed another day to recuperate because I got sick/lost my voice on Tuesday.

I worked like crazy (12+ hour shifts again) almost like Cirque except I had WAY more fun. Guest services, line controls, Ushering, Safety & Security, Reports, Convention Operations, escort Detail, Bouncer and general Logistics and Registration duties... yah I did all that and then some.

Thanks so much for guys visiting me while I was working!!!  :P It was really sweet of you ladies/gents to randomly finding me on random days, but the REAL parties happened Friday, Sat, and Sunday nights! Here's my recap:

Thursday:
4pm to 8pm – Pre-registration badge pick ups & line control... Busy lines (ask everyone who saw how busy I was) they tried to say hi while I was juggling random people. And I felt bad for not being able to hang out with you guys and gals. Sorry! >_<

8pm to 11pm – Fanime's Swap Meet. Its sorta like a flea market, pre registered folks are invited to sell/trade their stuff.

11pm to 2am – Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull – awesome!!!

Friday:
6am to 4pm – Registration/ An Cafe Line Control Working around the Con – randomly surprised my work with 2 HOT girls dressed up in costume with me. I have a random office thats off of Park avenue...

5pm to 7pm – Helping a friend drive to Oakland to pick up a new car! – She bought a Honda Hybrid.

8pm to 10pm – Dinner (Massive amounts of Pizza and drinks) and hanging out in the hotel room: Hot girls dancing in the window for kicks so I invited them to...

10pm to 1am – DANCE/RAVE!!! – but the HOT girls had to stop early because they were wearing high heals... ouch!

Saturday:
6am to 11am – Working around the Reg line and An Cafe Concert ticket pick up line. Mingling with cute and costumed girls is awesome

11am to 7pm – Working at our Maid Café – girls dress up as cute maids and serve you foods, mingle and role play (appropriately of course!) I was one of the Bouncers to keep pervy fanboys in check.

7pm to 10pm – Sushi with the HOT girls! All you can eat + Sake = good times.

11pm to 2am – More DANCING! Got VIP treatment (walked right passed super long line) – Girls got harassed by pervs (ask about side story if you want...), but Pervy guys got thrown out with my help and the night security Teams.

Sunday:
6am to 11am – Reg line + massive line for Concert ticket pickups (An Café) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antic_Cafe

11am to 2pm – Helping at the Maid Café

2pm – 7pm – Managing a line of 2500+ Fans of An Café.

Think about a line starting in front of Manpower's (my work office chain) Office on Park Ave. walking towards Market towards the (Tech Museum), then from Market going on to Santa Clara towards the front of the Civic Auditorium! so yah it felt like a LONG line... especially since I was trying to keep the peace of screaming rabid fangirls.

7pm – 10pm – An Café Concert @ the SJ Civic Auditorium = mass female Hysteria. Mosh pits are interesting, but I probably wouldn't do it again... unless I had riot gear.

10pm – 2am – One last nite of DANCING! – I felt like that guy in Hitch, instead of just being an 'escort' I got to dance a little with one of the Hot girls I was crushing on twas nice.

Monday:
730am to 11am – ('accidentally' slept in...) Walking around general Convention area keeping the peace.

11am to 12pm – An Café's Autograph signing to the limited general public – Seeing girls nearly faint for being 3ft. in front of their favorite band member was pretty funny. I counted at least 29 girls crying of Joy in a line about 150 fans.

12pm to 1pm – Checking out of the trashed hotel... partied like a Rockstar? Sure did. :P

1pm to 2pm – An Café's Q&A Panel line control... 300 Harecore fans... I made them line up via doing a Conga line. Hey it worked.  :D

2pm to 3pm – An Café's Q&A – Fans nearly killed me when their NO camera/video rule was changed 5 MINUTES before the Panel started. I seriously saw my life flash before my eyes. At least I would have been torn to shred by a rabid mob of J-rock Fans... would have interested way to go. All turned out OK, and the Q&A was actually pretty fun.

3pm to 4pm – An Café's secretive Staff Autographs: I gave my spot away to the 2 Hot girls I'd been hanging out with all weekend. Yah, I gave the girls a little more VIP treatment, because I'm cool like that.  8)

4pm to 6pm – An Café's security detail, they have a private conference, meeting with our Executives and exclusive press interview for our Evaluation of how they liked North America (as a whole Nation) San Jose was their first time concert in America!
Check out their An Cafe's Thank you VIDEO! -
http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,10010.0.html

6pm to 9pm – Final debriefing of the Convention as a whole, checking the Convention Center and most area were cleared out by then with a couple of exceptions here and there.

9pm to 12am – Randomly driving home friends from the Convention.

For Random Pictures: check out this link: (Cosplay.com) http://www.cosplay.com/event/922/photos/ - check out people in costume!

I'm exhausted and my voice is still gone.
I <3 being a nerd.
Hot girls <3 nerds like me.

It's a shame I only saw questionette for like 5 seconds before she walked into the Dealers room. We need to change that! and when my house is ready. I think its time for another JERRY-CON during the summer.

;D Can I get a HELL-YAH on that?  :D

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kept you going? besides the hot chicks of course :P
Being a nerd is always awesome, but i am a shy nerd still. That is changing however and maybe i will get lucky and hook up with some hot chicks like you :P

I agree that having late night live programming on stage zero also probably helped alieveate the problem of people doing stupid shit. Plus having the snack stations open later was a great idea because no one wants to walk around downtown san jose at night just to get something to drink besides water.

One thing I did wish for is to have the people yelling "YOU LOST THE GAME" to shut the fuck up. I mean, come on it was never that funny to begin with.

I meet Pyron and Jun after the damn you internets panel, but i didn't realize it was them until i got on the forums. I look forward to getting to know a lot more people here. especially the staffers as I am considering volunteering next year and am wondering what to expect and what it is like if i do volunteer.

I agree with Pyron completely on the glomping issue. pleas ask before you do it, I know I wouldn't do it without asking because I am six feet tall and roughly 240 pounds. I will maim someone if they are not prepared for it, especially if they are smaller than me.

As for the con ruining people's fun...Grow the fuck up people! You ruin the con by being stupid and that ruins the fun for other people at Fanimecon. Not everyone likes being glomped or taking part in other fandom activities. I have been going to Fanimecon for the past eight years and I can understand why the rules are being more clearly enforced. The convention is huge now and attendance is over 15,000 people now. This is a huge undertaking for an all volunteer organization and I deeply respect the staff for putting it on for us year after year.  They don't have to do this, but they do it because they want to do it. So at least respect the rules they set up for the con as they aren't restrictive at all and I have never had a problem with them.

P.S. Pyron, you remeber that random white guy who talked to you after the damn you internets panel saturday, well that is me.  I really hope damn you internets is back next year because it is probably one of the best panels at Fanimecon.

Lol, I don't think anyone disagreed with this in the entire thread. Everything else was just a joke. :P

Thanks for the support on the panel, though. Sorry we had to let you guys sit through that. o_0 Uh... After it ended, despite it sucking, we ended up getting a lot of support nonetheless, so it'll probably encourage a following year. Hope for the best.

I was actually talking to the people who may be reading this and nerd raging over it because you know they are out there. I am really new to the forums, so who were you at the panel? there was like ten people with pyron on stage. I do know you were one of the girls, but i can't remeber which one, which is sad becuse what you cosplayed as is right in your signature '-_-.
Actually It wasn't too bad sitting through it because the on the spot stuff was kinda funny for a bit especially the watermelon and fried chicken.
