As the name suggests, what were you doing this time last week?

For me, I was still waiting in my hotel room wondering about the lack of a "line con" and that I still had about 45 minutes until pro registration opened.

Hello everyone!

I've been told that Linefaced/DarkenedWings and G are stepping down from organizing the gatherings here on the forums, so for this year I will be maintaining the daytime gathering as G is still interested in running it. I'm still in talks with them about the 2014 edition of Midnight King's Game, so more information will be passed along when it's available.

Registration / Press Applications 2014
February 02, 2014, 11:44:09 PM
What's the status for press applications for Fanime 2014?

There's many steps that are taken into running an effective cosplay gathering, whether you're running a small gathering from an obscure series or a huge gathering from a well-known series.
Would this be a good panel to hold that would offer tips and advice?

2013 UPDATE
...I hate it when I plan things out way too much in advance and then something happens.
I was looking forward to attending Fanime 2013 and running this gathering, then I realize that Spring 2013 graduation for Sac State is on the same weekend as Fanime! So I've decided that I won't be attending Fanime even if my graduation is on Friday so save my money and spend it instead at Anime Expo, a convention that I need to get back to even more than this con.

I'll be locking this thread so that whoever takes over the gathering can do so with a clean thread.

However, this doesn't mean that I'm not running gatherings anymore. I'll be running a Persona/SMT Gathering at SacAnime Winter 2013 on Friday, January 4th, 2013 at 8pm at the Gateway location! More details will follow on the FB page! http://www.facebook.com/SMTCACosplay

I would like to thank everyone who has been going to these gatherings and those who have run them in my absence. I love you all, and I hope to see you all soon at future gatherings!

~Matthew

2012 ARCHIVES
Another year, another Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Gathering at FanimeCon 2012! This long-running franchise is on its game with the releases of Persona 4: The Animation, Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP), Devil Survivor 2 (NDS), and Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS) last year with releases of both Persona 4: The Ultimate/Persona 4: Arena (Arcade, PS3, 360), Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSP), Persona 4: The Golden (PS Vita) slated for 2012 as well as the rumored proper sequel to Strange Journey.

I'm having a debate over having a midnight gathering with people who want to go, and as of right now I'm leaning towards not having the midnight gathering. Nothing's set in stone though, so share you opinions with us!

General Anime Chat / America's Greatest Otaku
March 17, 2011, 03:59:36 PM
Has anyone been keeping a track of this train wreck known as America's Greatest Otaku? I've been watching all three episodes, and I just can't help to facepalm at everything that fails in this show.

I seriously wonder what their target audience is because when your sticky notes have to explain the popularity of Fruits Basket and World of Warcraft, I wonder if this is catered to the anime fanbase or to everyone else. Also, FYI Tokyopop: In The Groove =/= DDR.

This show has a rip-off feeling of MTV's Road Rules as the "Otaku 6" attempt a goal for each stop during each episode. But even then that fails; when you do a eating contest, visiting Kansas City, and you don't use BBQ for said eating contest, I wonder who in the world came up with this concept.

But don't take my word for it, watch it for yourself.

I have also created a permanent page on the blog here, and it will contain these same rules as well as pictures of the winners.

You can also find the same thread on Cosplay.com here.

Plz note: this "contest" is in no way afflicted with any FanimeCon event. This is being done on my own time with my own money.

Welcome to the 2nd annual "Find Me @ FanimeCon and Win Free Stuff!" game!
The game is simple: you find me at FanimeCon, you win a prize!

This is how you play:
1) Go to either of my Twitter pages and follow! Don't have a Twitter account? MAKE ONE!
2) During FanimeCon, I will be Tweeting at the con as part of my coverage alongside my blog. I will also be announcing times in which to find me. I might Tweet "First one to find me in the Dealers Room wins a CD" then follow up with a clue like "Pizza Butt" (meaning I'm at the Bandai booth). If you're the first one to find me, you win!
3) Prizes may vary, from plushies to CDs to quarters already inside an arcade machine. You never know what I might pull out.
4a) Friday's giveaway is restricted to people who did not win last year, meaning if you won last year you're not eligible for that day's giveaway.
4b) Saturday and Sunday is a free-for-all like last year.
4c) I will not be doing the contest on Monday as me and Ryan will be raffling off prizes at the SoCal Host Club Info Panel.
5) ???
6) Profit!
7) Enjoy the game!

This is probably by far the best part of FanimeCon - the Sunday Charity Auction at Stage Zero. Throughout the years, one-of-a-kind merchandise can be auctioned off by Guest of Honor Ric Meyers. It's a sight to be seen during the convention, especially when bidders break out their checkbooks to get their hands on this merchandise.

I do have a question though: I have a piece of FanimeCon merchandise that I would like to donate for the Charity Auction. How would I go about doing so?

So have at it! It's the Charity Auction thread!

From Eric P. Sherman, President and CEO of the anime dubbing company Bang Zoom! Entertainment:

You must have noticed by now that many of the publishers that brought anime to the West have been shut down or substantially down-sized. There are only a few places left still able to bring titles to our shores. This is a critical year for anime. There's no other way to say it. And I realized this morning that it was time for me to sound an urgent alarm.

If people don't resist the urge to get their fix illegally, the entire industry is about to fizzle out. It won't be a big dramatic change at this point. Last year we saw Bandai fire 90% of their staff on one Monday in January, and two years ago we saw Geneon (neé Pioneer) shut their doors and auction off their wares to the highest bidder. CPM died a slow, painful death. And ADV fell hard and fast, the way mighty giants will. But from here on, it won't be so exciting. Japan is already suffering and struggling to bring out quality titles. They can't rely on everything being picked up by US distributors anymore. And little by little, it just won't be here anymore.

You can't find much anime at Best Buy now. In fact, where can you find it for sale? Think about that.  There are fewer new titles coming out, and less and less stuff will be in English, because it's just not worth the cost of dubbing it. It's true that entertainment distribution models are going to be changing dramatically. DVD may be on the way out forever, and online TV is becoming a reality very quickly. But so far, there are no successful ways to monetize online entertainment. Not so that creators can afford to produce and distribute quality content.

Anime is going to die.

Unless YOU change. Right now. Stop stealing. If you have committed theft, robbery, shop-lifting, or just "downloading some stuff through torrent reactor,"  then just stop doing it — now.  You probably wouldn't go into a supermarket and put a package of swiss cheese under your shirt and walk out without paying. Nor would you walk into Best Buy and try to walk out with Guitar Hero, bypassing the cash register. Why? Is it because you might get caught? Or are there other issues, such as standards of morality, that dictate how you live your life.

The net, for all it's charms, is also a dark and dangerous place. When you're navigating it, you need to ask yourself this question:  Is this right, just because it is so easy? You need to understand that quality entertainment costs a lot to create. And if there is no one paying for this content, it just won't be made anymore. If no one bought tickets to a Lady Ga Ga show, she would not do the tour. That's just how it works. For some reason, people don't mind stealing their anime. I'm here to tell you flat out: This is wrong. You are doing something bad. And you need to stop it.

I'm sure that some of you reading this will laugh, close this window, and go download some more torrents. Why not? Who's going to know? Who's going to catch you?

I think this bears repetition, so I'll say it again: Not getting caught does not make what you are doing right. And I am pretty sure it doesn't make you feel good about yourself.  What you are doing is not only illegal, it is actually hurting many people. From the artists and creators, to the voice actors in the studios — all working to put food on their tables for their families. You can't see them, and you can't see the immediate results of your actions. But believe me, you are hurting people.

If what I'm saying resonates with you, then consider this a wake up call. A call to immediate and profound action. It's very easy to do.  You should support anime if you love it, by paying for it. Do the right thing. Plain and simple. Because if you don't, I can guarantee you that this time next year, Bang Zoom won't be bringing you anymore English language versions of it.

To all of those who support anime: a heartfelt thank you from all of us at the studio.

Eric P. Sherman, President & CEO, Bang Zoom! Entertainment / April 24, 2010

What do you guys think? Honestly, if American licensors like FUNimation and Bandai & American dubbers like Bang Zoom got anime over here quicker to the States, there wouldn't be that time lag to the point where we have to resort to illegal means. I'll use Durarara!! as an example - if I see it my way, there would already be a dub of the first 12 episodes airing on US TV and a DVD release coming soon while Japan is starting the 2nd part of the series.

If we could find someone who could do it, wouldn't it be cool if FanimeCon had its own mobile (like iPhone and/or Android and/or Blackberry) application? It could be used as real-time communication between the con and its attendees. Need to see when a panel is taking place? When's a cosplay gathering? Who exactly is LM.C? You can have different tabs - one for cosplay, panels, events, places to eat, and so fourth - that could answer these questions. I wouldn't mind paying for it either.
