We wish you the best of luck in the contest!
**** IMPORTANT INFORMATION ****
We had unprecedented registration this year, and due to that and the limited timeframe we have (only Friday and part of Saturday) we are going to be strictly enforcing the rules this year (see below).
Please read the following directions, as you will be unable to participate unless you do the following actions.
#1 At least one member of your group must check in at the Masquerade Registration Desk (SJCC D & E) on FRIDAY, MAY 22, between the hours of 9am and 7pm. This is EXTREMELY important. We have 95 groups signed up this year; if you do not have at least one person check in on Friday by 7pm, we are going to remove your group and allow one of the waiting list groups in.
We have EXTREMELY LIMITED check-in on Saturday before 10am for those who pre-requested it. If you need to check in on Saturday morning (and have not already requested it), you need to e-mail me ASAP. We will NOT hold your spot unless we know in advance that you need Saturday check-in due to an unavoidable emergency.
#2 EVERYONE in your group must be checked in by Saturday at 10am, or those members will not be able to participate.
#3 Please bring your music with you on FRIDAY, MAY 22, check-in. We will not accept ANY music after 10am on SATURDAY, MAY 23, and we will REMOVE YOU FROM THE MASQUERADE. This is extremely important. NO EXCEPTIONS, period.
#4 All Craftsmanship judging must be done on FRIDAY, MAY 22, unless you have made prior arrangements with the Masquerade Coordinator because our spots are almost full; we can work with you to split your group up on Friday and Saturday if you just have a few people who will only be there on Saturday. You can sign up for a Craftsmanship judging spot on Friday morning. Craftsmanship judging is entirely optional, but spots fill up quickly.
#5 There is a mandatory meeting at 5pm on SATURDAY, MAY 23 at the CIVIC AUDITORIUM. You must be in costume and ready to go. You will need to remain in the theater until after your performance, so be sure to eat and drink before arriving at the theater.
Location: http://sanjose.org/meetings/facilities/civic_aud.php
#6 Optional Rehearsal at the Civic Auditorium on Saturday from 2pm - 4pm.
*** WAITING LIST INDIVIDUALS ***
You are currently on the waiting list. What does that mean?
OK, here's the deal... The first 50ish groups on the list are approved; everyone else is on the waiting list. If your group does not say "Problem" then it's OK and just on the waiting list. All the problem entries at the moment are people who did not fill out the database correctly; we will judge each entry when they come in to register at the convention to see if they are appropriate.
In my experience, THE MAJORITY on the waiting list get in. This is because normal attrition is about 20%. That means 20% of the groups "Approved" can't make it for whatever reason, so we infill with Masquerade waiting list people -- that's why we have a waiting list.
Also, if our Masquerade is "short" ... so say we have 50 entries but the total time adds up to only 2 hours of programming (based on their music), we will pad the numbers to get more like 3 hours of programming. It all works out.
Again, what does this mean? It means you should just act like a normal group, and do everything listed below. Your chances are excellent to get in.
If you have been judged for Craftsmanship, you WILL be allowed on as a Display Entry (walk-on) even if we cannot ensure a skit.
If you want to do a skit, you will know by SATURDAY, MAY 23, at 10:00am if you got in. Please show up at the Masquerade Registration Desk (SJCC D & E) at 10:00am for confirmation.
*** END INFORMATION FOR WAITING LIST INDIVIDUALS ***
Thank you for your participation!

Since the rules aren't up yet, I was hoping you could tell me the time limit for a skit? Is it two minutes?
Absolute max time for a skit is 3 minutes, if I remember correctly
can't you register at the con?

can't you register at the con?
advice:DO NOT REGISTER AT THE CON. You probably couldn't because the list always fills up the first 2 weeks of registration. So i'd say sign up on the first day the sign ups are open.
I know the rules are under the masquerade topic on the website
but is there a way that you can make them in a pdf format or printable format please?
I would like to have them in paper to make sure we have everything and not breaking rules or somethng ^_^
this is the first time ive cosplayed at a con is there a competition on craftmanship/charecter accruacey? or is it all just skit preformances?

There are awards for Craftsmanship, you would need to inform the people at the Masq. Reg area/room at the con that you want your costume to be judged and they'll help you from there.
Is it back in the Civic Center, or is the Masq moving back to the Performing Arts Center across from the Crowne Plaza?
CAN WE TRY INCLUDING A PROJECTOR SCRREN/VIDEO INCORPORATION INTO THE MAS SKITS THIS YEAR IF WE GET A PLACE THAT CAN DO IT? ;D (sorrie its all caps i just really want this to happen sometime in the future)
i have a question about seeing it.. is that ok?
does it cost extra to get in to just watch it? cause they charge at anime expo and made us really sad :(

No, it's completely free.
And you shouldn't had paid at AX unless you wanted the preferred seating where they charge.
good! cause i've been watching things for years past and this masquerade looks really good 8D

Yes, you can, but we usually fill up on pre reg in advance. Usually, if we are lucky, we have a bout 5 spots available at the convention. However, I do not guarantee this. It's best to sign up in advance.

Um O_o... this isn't something that Fanime provides at the moment, sorry :( I usually have a few copies of the rules at the Registration Desk at the convention if you want to pick up a copy.

There are basically two award structures: one just for skits, and one for craftsmanship. You can be in either or both. You just need to fill out the Craftsmanship form in advance and be judged by appointment by our Craftsmanship judges pre-Masquerade (they are there on Friday and Saturday).

Yep! It starts tonight @ 11:59pm (Pacific Standard Time).
The link will be listed here:
http://www.fanime.com/events/masquerade.html
It will also be posted at the top of this thread this evening when it opens.
It's basically an online registration system. You can add/update/change your information right up until May 16 with our system :)
Since the site is down, how should we sign up?

It's not down -- check the first post in this thread. My SSL certificate just expired... like an hour ago >.<
This link should let you get to the site:
http://www.anime-online.com/cosplay/
However, when it tries to submit it, it's going to go to an SSL page. If you are using Firefox, you need to add an exception. For IE, just click on "Continue to this website (not recommended). "
Sorry x 100 >.< on the phone with my ISP right now
How long is "a couple of hours"?
I'm up early every weekday morning so right now I'm at my limit of being able to stay awake. No temp holds through PM until the registration site is accessible later in the morning?
I repeat: the web site IS up -- you should be able to register. It's not down. We've had 25 registrations so far...?
http://www.anime-online.com/cosplay/
Click there. It definitely works.
Okay, I started it on this PC and the link refused to work. But when I opened my mac, the link worked. It could be dependent on the browser.
*edit* sorry just finished reading your one post :o
*second edit* is there a problem with getting the verification email too?
When will we know if we get approved?
Thanks
OK all -- I have the new certificate, but I'd have to reboot the server in order to get it working. I'm NOT going to do that right now, because I know people are registering and I don't want it to go completely down...
It will be fixed soon.
http://www.anime-online.com/cosplay/ <-- just use this link instead, all should be well.

You're good. I updated your reg. Thanks :)
I have a question about the music section on the registration page.
So the title of the section says Music Requests - is this where we state that we're bringing our own music? It's my first time entering the masquerade so I apologize if it seems like a newbish question (I just want to make sure I get everything right XD).

Please just bring your music with you on CD to the registration desk at the convention. The Music Requests section is basically for things like ... "Start the music after we are on the stage, fade the music as we walk off the stage". Or "Start the music before we come on stage, stop the music exactly at 2 minutes." Just explain what you want. Sometimes people have elaborite things like "pause the music here until we do xyz", etc. ^^;

3. At this point, I'm moving operations to the http:// URL for 2009, just so that it's consistant :/
http://www.anime-online.com/cosplay/
4. Again, I apologize about the scare. You all know I'm a database dork, so this was my worst nightmare Q_Q sorries.
5. Approvals will be done tomorrow. I need to read through all the proposals and make sure they are OK. That takes a few hours. Expect changes on this page by tomorrow evening (probably lateish):
http://anime-online.com/cosplay/list.php
Hugs all! GOOD NIGHT :)
04/02/09 Registration Updates
Sooo I fail at life; my SSL certificate expired TODAY >.< (from last year...) I'm renewing it right now. If you get an SSL certificate error, that's why Q_Q I'm sorry! It's still a secure site >.> April Fool's on ME >.<
The site to register is here:

PLEASE ignore the SSL warning >.< it will be fixed in a couple of hours, but I need to reboot the server to do it and I don't want to do that while people are trying to register.
04/01/09 Registration Updates
We are on track to open this evening at 11:59pm! :)
The links will be on THIS page:
http://www.fanime.com/events/masquerade.html
Instructions:
1. Register yourself
2. Get your confirmation e-mail
3. Click on the link in the e-mail to activate your account (NOTE: AOL users -- I will have to do this manually for you -- AOL seems to block Fanime mail)
4. Go BACK to the registration page, log in at the top of the page, update the rest of your registration.
5. You MUST log in and add at least one contestant or your registration will NOT be confirmed.
Usually I stay up this evening to approve entries and such, but because being pregnant makes me totally exhausted >.< ... I won't be doing that this year. All entries will be approved on April 2nd.
If you have a problem registering (once the Reg Application is live) -- POST HERE, PM me, or e-mail me. As long as you do one or the other, I can promise you that I will save a spot for you based on the time you posted and/or e-mailed me and I will help you register tomorrow (note: this only applies for the first day of reg).
Thanks :)
Marisa
03/31/09 Masquerade UPDATES!!
Sorry I haven't been trolling the forums as much as I should -- I guess I should make it public: I'm pregnant!! So, I've been sick/exhausted/stressed for about 3 months straight now. We are expecting our little one (our very first) in October. So thank you for your patience with me :) I'm probably going to look like a beach ball in May for Fanime ^_^;; Never fear though, we have our super awesome Masquereade team ready to take care of you too!
ANYWAY -- more along the lines of ZOMG Masquerade.... some reminders.
1. Masquerade registration opens TOMORROW, not today. Tomorrow, April 1, at 11:59pm. So, that's basically midnight tomorrow. Please DO NOT stay up all night tonight (March 31). K? I know people always get confused. This is not an April Fool's joke :)
2. There SHOULD be a link up here when it opens: http://www.fanime.com/events/masquerade.html
However, if there is not, there WILL be a link, right here, in this forum, in this thread. So please check this thread tomorrow night if a link doesn't appear on the forums for some reason.
Thanks and check back here tomorrow for more info!
*hugs*
~Marisa

It is your responsibility to read the rules and make sure you understand them. It is also your responsibility ask questions if you are confused. We are here to help you. Please feel free to contact the Cosplay Coordinator [Marisa / angeljibrille] with your questions and/or comments via e-mail [email protected] or PM.

OK, here's the deal... The first 50ish groups on the list are approved; everyone else is on the waiting list. If your group does not say "Problem" then it's OK and just on the waiting list. It will move up if people drop out, or the "problem" groups do not fix their entries. I do have one "Pending" which is due to a weapon's policy issue that I am still waiting on Rovers to respond to.
HOWEVER!!!! In my experience, EVERY SINGLE GROUP on the waiting list gets in. I've never, not once in 10 years of doing this, had a waiting list group not get into the Masquerade who showed up, checked in, and did everything they are supposed to do at the convention. This is because normal attrition is about 20%. So, what do you do? You need to make sure you show up at the convention to sign in at the Masquerade Desk and get your passes and get judged. I'm positive you will be just fine as long as you check in early and do everything we need you to do.
I hope that reassures you :)
Thanks,
Marisa

thanks so much for getting back to us so quick and everything, we are SO excited and are off to work on our skit now!!! ^_^
well first off congrats on being a mother ^___^
On the second matter I know you've already answered this question and I feel really silly about asking. But if I understand this correctly the groups who are on the top 20 waiting list has a really good shot at being in the masquerade, right?
I have a question. I assumed this year would be like previous years, but then I read the cosplay masqurade rules over, and started freaking out. It says that:
Costumes purchased or rented from a costume shop, designer direct, eBay, Yahoo Auctions, Yahoo Japan Auctions, Cospa, any other costume store or online resource, or any costumes made for you by a designer or seamstress, are prohibited. Ignoring this rule will negate your eligibility (and your group's eligibility; even if only one person in the group has a disqualified costume) to participate in Cosplay Spectacular and will also disqualify you for any performance and/or craftsmanship awards.
In my group, 5 of us made our costumes and 3 bought them. Does that mean we cannot participate in the masqurade at all? Or does that just make us ineligable to win a craftsmanship award? I know in previous years people had bought their costumes and still performed, so I'm wondering if this is a new rule, or if I'm just misunderstanding it.
I have a question about the masquerade. I sent an email to
[email protected] and I haven't received an answer
Is that still the same working email to send questions to the coordinator?
I really need an answer soon please! ???
Hello,
I have submitted a proposal for special performance via email in the beginning of May ( I know it was late),
A week later, I have sent PM to Ms. angeljibrille to see if the email was received.
But I had not heard any answer for any of those, so we tried to register via Masquerade page and stated special performance but it was changed to skit and status was pending. We read all the info on the page but have no idea how the system for the special performance application works...
I would really appreciate if you let us know our true status, even we were too late to apply...that case, we understand and we will try again next year with more preparations.
I know this is right before the con and all the staff people are terribly busy but would someone from masquerade office PM me or email to our registered email address on the masquerade page and let us know?
I really appreciate. ^^
Thank you.
