Big Event Showcase / Music Requests for the 2018 Black & White Ball
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:38:40 AM »
Hello, everyone!

Every year, the Black and White Ball staff works as hard as they possibly can to learn and grow from the feedback and different experiences we have received. One of the positive pieces of feedback that we keep hearing has been about the improvement of the playlist year by year. This is not because we have minions running around trying to read your minds to find out what songs will be perfect to play. This is because those who attend actually have an input on the playlist itself!

We would love to incorporate as many requests as we can, so feel free to request anything that you'd be excited to hear!

We would like to get a head start on finding out what you, your friends, or anyone thinking about attending the Black and White Ball would love to hear and dance to! For those who may not exactly remember what they liked or didn't like about the previous playlists, feel free to look through the playlists of previous years below.

Now, here are some things you should know about the playlist:

The playlist is generally a compilation of suggestions from the forums, social media outlets, and word of mouth. The Black and White Ball staff will look through the suggestions to look for songs that have a steady beat to dance to and fit with the type of dances being held during the event. We also check the lyrics (if there are any) to make sure that they are appropriate for all ages as there is no age restriction at the event itself.

While not all songs will be liked by everyone, we try our best to come up with a good variety of music for the various dance styles that will be taught during the weekend. The staff then has to ensure that the sound levels are correct, the tempo is right, and possibly cut some of them for length. This is a lot of work given how long the event is, which is why we have the playlist completed usually around the beginning to middle of May. Because of this, we will be unable to take requests at the Ball itself.

Generally, we have found that the last few weeks leading up to the Black and White Ball sees an overload of requests and suggestions. Unfortunately, we are unable to include a good portion of those songs because it was so close to the event. Any songs requested at that time that do not get added to the playlist will get added to the suggestion list for the next year.

We would also appreciate it if you could link a video or audio clip of the song you're requesting. It isn't required, but it does help us make sure that we are looking at the correct song.

So what does that mean for you? You should get your requests in early!

This is YOUR chance to give input on what you would like to hear at the Black and White Ball!

We appreciate and look at all suggestions, but please remember that, while you may make a request, the Black and White Ball staff has the final say as to what becomes part of the playlist. If you feel strongly about your request, please say so and provide support for it. We are looking for all types of music from pop, jpop, kpop, anime, video game, etc. so don't be afraid to offer up any suggestions that you may have, even if you're not sure if it's suitable.

You may also email us your requests at bwball@fanime.com! If you choose to email us, please include "Music Request" or "Playlist Suggestion" in the title so we can keep track of it accordingly.

We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Thank you!

Hi there!! Very late question but what if we have a dress that is higher than the knee but we wear long pants underneath or opaque leggings? Is this alright or no? Please let me know! Thank you!

Leggings are allowed under dresses that adhere to the code. Unfortunately, the rule for skirts is consistent no matter if leggings are worn under or not.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Hello everyone!

There seems to always be an interest in the songs that were on the playlist for the Black and White Ball, so here is the complete playlist for your enjoyment!

If you would like to get a head start and make a request for the 2017 playlist, keep an eye out for the new music request thread or email us at bwball@fanimeDOTcom. Thank you! :)

This year's playlist has the most music requests included in it than we've ever had before!

Thank you all for your requests. I'm looking forward to another amazing weekend of great music and dancing!

What about blood? If I show up as Carrie, will I be able to get in?

Pre-bloody Carrie's dress would be appropriate for Ball. Unfortunately, the blood-covered dress may not be appropriate.

It's a difficult line to find between it being formal and not for something like this, but the horror aspect of it may not be suitable for the younger audience we are expecting at this all-ages event.

I appreciate your question! We have not had the gore aspect of cosplay addressed at Ball before, so it is helpful to get questions like this.

Thank you!

Request for next year! Mamamoo - Ahh Oop!

:D I hope to stop by and visit a lesson this weekend. I hope none of y'all (bwball staff) have forgotten my face! :-P

We'd love to see you visit anytime! :D

Thank you for all of the requests, everyone! Our playlist builders are doing their best to make sure as much of these requests can happen throughout the evening!

are corsets acceptable as a top?

Corsets are perfectly fine to wear!

Ok so, in regards into formal wear for women, how much cleavage is to much cleavage? Just need to know if I need to alter my dress for the ball.

We have no rules regarding cleavage at this point, so as long as it covers what needs to be covered, it should be fine. I would recommend using fabric tape to support the top of your dress, as dancing may move parts of the dress in a way that may become uncomfortable for you.

I'm trying a new cosplay this year.  Would this qualify enough to be acceptable?

http://fav.me/da2ge25

Or should I look into renting a white tux to make it more formal?

My major concerns are the following:
The part of the scarf which covers your face may be difficult to breathe while dancing in, especially when the dance floor gets crowded. The head covering itself is long, so that could be another challenge in itself on the dance floor.
I can't exactly tell what kind of top it is from the angle of the picture. What kind of top is it? If it is something like a white button-up, it would be fine, but I don't want to give you a definite answer without knowing for sure.

Is there an age limit to the ball? Or as long as they're dressed classy can a 4yo waltz in with her parents?

There is no age limit! As long as the child has a badge for entry and is dressed up, they are welcome. :)

Thank you all for your requests! We'll listen to them and see what we can include in the playlist this year!

Only a few more weeks until con! If you have any music requests, please post them or email them to us as soon as possible! We finalize the playlist before con, so the sooner the better! :)

Ultimately I don't think the black and white ball attire really matters. It seems it always starts off with strict rules regarding attire and as the night goes on people in storm trooper costumes, brightly covered cosplay, or large prop items get allowed in eventually.

All cosplay that fits within the dress code is allowed. Uniformed cosplay like the storm trooper (I clearly remember the storm trooper wearing a button-up under the chest piece and a tie/bowtie over the uniform) are therefore allowed. We have no restrictions on colors, either, so brightly colored cosplay within the dress code guidelines are permitted.

Large props are also allowed if they are not weapons as long as they are not on the dance floor. Most of the large props we have had at the Ball include large walking staffs or wings, which are typically set at the table/chair the person is using, anyway. We have had people try to bring weapon props in the past, but they have never been allowed and have never gotten passed the dress code check.

Thank you for your feedback! We will do our best to make sure that the dress code applies to everyone equally throughout the evening to ensure the formality of the event. :)

My apologies for the delayed response. I thought I had already posted!  :-\

Yes, formal medieval tunics will be allowed!

Thank you for your requests so far! We'll listen to them and see if we can fit them into the playlist. :)

We've got a little over a month until Ball! Get your requests in before the playlist is finalized!
