As for the Black and White Ball...if you go in a cosplay, they want you to be wearing something suitable for a dance. So the costume needs to be something "dressier" as opposed to "casual".
I have worn Abel before, and my Sairin. Both were acceptable.

And this year...I'll be wearing Abel again.  ;)

And I'll also be going to the ball as Leon...can't pass up all the pretty dresses with pretty ladies in them now can I.   ;)

I'll probably wind up wearing Kaya for the ball -- I doubt I'll get the other thing I wanted to done.  Could be worse.  (But Kaya progress is being made.  Yay!)

Komichuu: There's a thread under Big Event Showcase for B&W Ball attire questions where you can post photos (or reference pictures) and have the staff tell you if it's okay or not.  You might run into a problem with Mirka's skirt -- I forget how long it is, but they seem to be stipulating knee-length or so -- but it's worth asking about.

I had been thinking to wear Hazel from Saiyuki at one point, but then Abel made more sense to wear for a few reasons.

Komichuu just make sure they are comfortable heels... nothing sucks worse then dancing in painful shoes.
