Hallo~ :D Second ball and my last dress was formal as can be. Now I'm wondering about my idea for this year :) Help please? ^^;

http://www.unique-vintage.com/preorderteal-collard-halter-drop-waist-prom-dress-p-10957.html

It's a full length gown but the cut on it makes me curious as to whether it can work or not. Thanks for your time! ^^

Are black and white lolita dresses okay? Say this one: http://www.cosplayfu.com/product/Lolita+Dress+%28Bonita%29

or this one: http://www.cosplayfu.com/product/Lolita+Dress+%28Poppy%29
Just to let you know, the first one doesn't really fit the lolita aesthetic well (too much scratchy lace, cosplayish design) and the second is actually a coat (and the stock image is taken directly from BtSSB). If you were planning on buying from that site, I can point you to somewhere much more reliable and fits the aesthetic much better~ :D

I have worn a dress pretty similar to that cut (backless, halter [only mine had a cutout neck instead of a V-neck], long skirt with long slit up side). I'm not B&W Ball staff, so I can't give a final say, but I have worn something -very- similar with no problems. To me, it just looks like a regular prom-type dress.

If you could point out a different place then that would be nice. There is a place in Japantown in San Francisco that I wouldn't mind going to since I can actually try the dresses on right there, but they don't always have all the styles I like.

Both the examples you posted were of "old-school" blackxwhite outfits, so I'll focus mainly on that.

I'm not sure what your price range is? ($150-300ish for brand, $40-100ish for offbrands, $100-200ish for more expensive offbrands, etc.) I'll focus mostly on offbrands, just to be safe, especially since it can be hard to find something blackxwhite that is quality.

Bodyline has a few examples that could work. This one might not be flattering on all body types, since the front might make someone look pregnant, and the lace might be a little questionable, but the design and overall look is really cute.
This one is pretty cute, if it has a couple of wonky details (the sleeve lace looks odd to me, but that's just personal opinion...).
This one is really simple, but really cute.

Taobao has a lot of different brands that make a lot of different styles. I'll link to Qutieland (a rather expensive shopping service), but you may be able to buy these cheaper through the brands themselves with another shopping service. If you want one of these, I can help you find it on Taobao if you want the cheaper price (and if they [still] carry it -- some things are exclusives)
This JSK is pretty much essential old-school lolita.
This one is simpler, but still pretty.
Nornally, the allover lce in this one wouldn't be suitable, but this is really gorgeous, and I know it will be quality.
Anna House is another good option. I would choose nearly anything from about product  015-1140  down. You can have them bespoke in basically any colour. I especially like 1128 and 1067 for a nice old-school look.

I hope that helps! I just don't want you to get more into the fashion and find out that you purchased something that isn't suitable, or, even worse, purchase something, recieve it, and find out that the quality is simply aful.

One of my friends is planning to wear a Ciel Phantomhive cosplay, and while it's pretty fancy, we were concerned because his pants aren't true "slacks." Is this still appropriate?

Kell-chan - It should be fine as long as the pants are not jeans.

Xichisex - Either one would be fine as long as the dress part of it does not go above 3 inches from your knees.

There are a lot of questions about style and dress length but I was wondering about colors? It's a black/white ball but does that mean we have to wear black and or white only. I was planning a black and purple outfit, would that be okay?

Black and White is just referring to the fact that the event will be a semi-formal event.  Colors do not have to be just black and white.  However the fashion police may say something if neon colors are involved :P.  If you are wearing something semi-formal and it is black and purple, that will be fine.

Is "crossplaying" allowed at the black and white ball? Like, could my friend who's a guy go in a formal/elegant ballgown? or would that be against the rules?

"crossplaying" is perfectly fine as long they meet the dress code.

I was wondering if this outfit is formal enough for the ball? I would be wearing it with black slacks and black dress shoes.

[Edit: I forgot to include the actual link to the picture http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/196933_215538945127213_100000133283551_982671_1627786_n.jpg]

How short is the dress?  Meaning how far above the knees does it end?

Chibi-Freshman - The outfit looks fine for the BWBall.  Although you may consider tucking the shirt in to start the evening with.  But it looks good to me. :)

KareHasu - The dress looks fine for the BWBall so long as the bottom of the dress does not go higher than 3 inches from your knees.  I hope that helps.

How would the code apply to heels? I plan to wear strappy heels similar to this pair. Do they confirm to the formal-ness of the ball at all? o-o

^ My feet would DIE having to wear 3 inches. XD So the toes don't have to be covered or anything, correct? (as long as it's well-attached to the foot itself of course.)
