So i'm planning to make this armor-like cosplay from Shaman King's Nichom.
And I've never made armor before, but I had a few ideas in mind on how to make it, although I am not quite sure about it.
The armor-like cosplay is this:

I was thinking of using and cutting up cardboard and then masking taping it...but then I would like to know what I should use over it so I can put in the details on it etc. I know clay would do, but it is also very expensive to buy that much clay. Is there any kind of plastic which you can mold on it? Or anything that isn't so expensive in making it? All advices are welcome! :]

Well there are already websites dedicated to helping you out with your problem
http://www.entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html is an example of such a site.

For most armor building is revolved around using craft foam and/or polystyrene sheets. But of course a lot of the websites for prop armor making are suggestions you can do to go about it. Also keep in mind some methods may not be for you either in terms of resource gathering or usage of tools. So experiment with it and see what works for you.

In my case I built my first armor using a wire frame base. Although it didn't turn out as well as I had hoped it is still a developing skill  in progress.
