Discounts at restaurants - catch?

I went to Hydration but they informed me that they only do the discount if you order $15 or more...furthermore since it is a "Special event" they're not doing their usual box + milk tea combo.  Meh.  Does anyone know if there is a catch at the other places or has the discount worked?

The only other place I went to was Pita Pit. They gave the discount on everything I bought.

Last year I ate there at least 4 times and got a student discount each time. Maybe this is the first year they advertised it?

There is one event, but I forget what. I think it's an Akira showing at that theater on 2nd street on the... 9th? If you show your Fanime badge there, you get a discount.
