So we heard and read all your comments about space issues, Fanime Fans! So this year the Black and White Ball is coming to you bigger than ever!  For the last couple of years we have been in the Fairmont, but 2012 brings a big change for the Black and White Ball.  We know that you at the Con have been clamoring for a larger venue and we believe that we have found the location.  So it is with great pleasure that the staff of the Black and White Ball is proud the announce the new location.  Parkside Hall!!!

So this year, all dance lessons and the Black and White Ball will be located in Parkside Hall.  Parkside Hall is located next to the Tech Museum and there will be signs at FanimeCon to direct you to our new venue.  So make plans to come out and join us for dance lessons and the Black and White Ball!  See you there!

Thanks for posting the great news!  May I suggest you post the location of Parkside Hall on the official Fanime website =D  I found out where Parkside Hall is located on this post.

Team San Jose has a website on Parkside.  Jim is corrected.  The hall is huge ^__^

Thank you for the announcement!

That space looks huge!! I'm really looking forward to it now, since we'll probably actually have space to dance this year, and hopefully we won't have a giant line.

super uber excited!! :)
especially with a bigger space, there will definitely be more room to move around and stuff

I'm so sad this is at the same time as the Cosplay Masquerade... I planned to attend both! Does anyone know around how late the Ball will be going on? I'd love to try to attend part of each :)

Cosplay Circus

Glad to hear of the change in venue! It definitely makes things easier for people who are staying in the Fairmont (like I do yearly) not have to struggle for elevators to get to our rooms now, can't wait to attend~

Just like last year, we extended the time for the BW Ball until midnight so those who wish to attend both events get the chance to. :)

Yay! That's great news ^_^ Glad to know I can go to both of the events I'm most excited about.

The Cosplay Masquerade shouldn't go later than 11pm from my recollection (if Jim says otherwise, I'd go with his word over mine), while the Black & White Ball lasts until midnight, so if you want to attend both, there should be plenty of time to do so.

Is there any real reason why the Masquerade and the Ball are scheduled at the same time? Is this how the events are going to be scheduled again next year?  This is very frustrating and I'm very disappointed, I really hope the planning improves for next year.

Lots of people will be attending the Masquerade until the very end, only to run to their hotel rooms (which takes a little bit of time), quickly change into formal wear and then run(carefully, in order to not face-plant on the cement for some girls) to the Ball just in order to attend for such a short amount of time.

Going to play devil's advocate here.

To be fair, FanimeCon is huge. As in 20,000+. When you have 20,000+ people to entertain, you have to consider one tiny problem: space. Obviously not all 20,000+ people can fit in the Masquerade or in the B+W Ball. By having the events at the same time, you have less attendence at each one, which, in this case, is not neccessarily a bad thing. I'm not saying staff are maliciously planning this. I'm just saying that they're trying to spread people out a little so they're not all in one big, crowded space.

Another point, and this one is probably more likely the main reason: time conflict happens no matter what. If the Masquerade were on Saturday, people would complain that it interferes with MusicFest. If it were on Friday or Monday, people would complain that they couldn't attend on those days. Unfortunately, some events will have to overlap due to the nature of the beast.

I'm not anyone official or anything, but as someone who has put on events before, I know the kind of logistical decsions that have to be made. Yeah, it sucks, but such is life.

The BWBall has been on Sunday since at least 2010.  We personally can't control what's put opposite us (MusicFest in 2010, Masq last year and this year), but we like Sunday night because we can offer maximum flexibility in lessons.

I believe the B&W Ball has always been on Sunday? (I haven't missed one yet, but I still couldn't tell you if the first few were on Sunday or Saturday!) The Masquerade has historically been on Sunday (though I remember a few years there where theere was a scheduling conflict that required it to be on Saturday).

Really, kookiekween is right. There's going to be overlaps and conflicts no matter what. I personally like the B&W Ball on Sunday because it provides a nice wrap-up to the weekend, and if I did the Masqerades, I'd like them on Sunday because it gives more time for judging throughout the weekend. People are always going to complain! You can't attend everything. I'm glad that the B&W Ball has been extended so tha tthose who do the Masquerade can still participate if they wish. Is it possible, maybe in the future, to extend to to two hours after the Masquerade, whatever time that may be ending, so that people have even more time to attend both, especially once taking into consideration possibly having to change in between?

unfortunately a lot of people have complained in the past and again unfortunately, theres only so much that the schedulers can do. like the people above me posted, they plan these things out to give maximum time and attendance to everyone. and the ball has been on sunday since like 2005/2006 since thats when i first started goin. if attending fanime and goin to fanime is something that ur passionate about, go to one one year and go to the other the next year

but im tellin u now, the likelihood is that not much is gonna change as far as planning goes. sorry

As the saying goes, Fanime is for fans, by fans.  Everyone is going to have their specific interests and things they want to do at FanimeCon and we would love to accommodate everyone's wishes but that doesn't always happen.  We do try to look at the schedule and see if there are any conflicts between events.  Some cases, they are small so it doesnt really register with people.  Other schedule conflicts are bigger and we have tried to work with the two or three departments involved but it still does take a lot of work and time, and in some cases, we may not be able to adjust things to fit things in.

With that said, we try to make sure that there is something for everyone here at FanimeCon and will take your feedback under advisement.  Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you at FanimeCon.
