Rude photo takers.

A majority of what I said applies to professional and non professional as well.

Just because a photographer isn't cosplaying doesn't mean that they think we're "OMGLOL So lame" for doing so.  Hell, I know plenty of con goers and anime fans who have never even touched the idea of cosplaying. They still love it.

And while there may be people who go "What the heck is going on? Let me grab my camera!"  I doubt that 95% of the photographers, professional or not, think we're lame and that they're wasting their weekend.

Now what are my ideas on why people/photographers are rude? There's stress, nerves get frazzled, there's long lines, there's crowds, Trying to get to a gathering?  It's over there! Nah it's over there! No actually I heard it was over there!,  It's hot, you set up the perfect shot.. and someone just walked right in front of you.. for the 20th time.  Also, people are quick to jump to assumptions and to generalize.  For example, if a photographer has genuinely met a few snobs before, then when he or she is rejected or declined from taking a photo, then they may automatically think the worse.

And this justifies them making a dick comment?

Sweet Crispity Chocolate, No.  Of course not.   I never meant to make it seem like a justification.  If that's how it came across, I apologize.

Having a bad day, experience with other rude people, being tired, etc is never a justification to treat people rudely, or to make dick comments.  Sadly though, it happens.  Like I said: People generalize, they group people together, they get defensive.  That amazingly beautiful cosplayer said 'no, not right now' when you asked for her photo?  That stuck up bitch! I bet she thinks she's too pretty or something, probably only does private photo shoots.  Pssh yeah.  It couldn't possibly be that she's heading to the bathroom, or back to her hotel, or needs to fix something.  Hell, there couldn't even be the chance that she just got a call from a friend and there's an emergency! Noope.   .................That was all sarcasm, btw.

Or that photographer taking pictures, he couldn't possibly be just a fan of the shows and the costumes.  Nope, he's a creeper!

But I repeat, NONE of this is "justification".

Maskenlav

Konekogami I was merely implying that the rude photographers tend to be plain clothed NON cosplayers. I never meant it to be read as "cosplayers who are plain clothed who are rude" hell no! I ALWAYS cosplay at cons but when I dont I am plain clothed and taking pics. Sorry if you thought I was bashing on plain clothed cosplayer photographers
"I'll do it! I'll marry you!"

I was Hatsune Miku from Cendrillon. I don't think it was you. The guy was wearing a neko shirt with a creeper keychain.

I think I was accidently called a creeper this last year...  I was outside on my phone viewing pictures I just took on my phone and i was moving around trying to get the sun's glare off my screen I guess I accidently walked into a meetup and some guy called me a creeper... this thread plus my misfortune sheds light to me that "creepers" are a bigger problem than visible on here.

Hi Guys, Rovers Here!

There are a few things in this thread I'd like to address.

1) If there is ever a "creep" taking inappropriate pictures, harassing cosplayers, or doing other things that set off the "creepy" radar-- whether you're male, female, or other, whether you're the one being harassed or not-- get a Rover. We'll do our best to resolve the situation.

2) If there is ever a photographer being aggressive or harassing people-- in non-creepy ways-- and you feel they have crossed a line, get a Rover. This happens quite a bit, and often they just need to cool down a bit before interacting with the general public.

3) If either 1 or 2 happens at Gatherings, grab a Gatherings staff member and they can radio for a Rover.

4) Know your rights as a cosplayer. You do not have to stop for pictures if you're trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Be polite but firm and tell them no, sorry. If it becomes an issue, and you are legitimately having trouble making it somewhere, please feel free to grab a Rover and ask for an escort.

5) If you are a photographer and do not wish to be called a jerk or a creep, or end up having a chat with Rovers, consider how you are approaching cosplayers. Be aware of your demeanor. If you're busy leering at someone when you ask for a picture, they have every right to say no. If they reject your photo-request, accept with grace. Do not then cuss them out for any reason. That is uncalled for.

6) Even if you are not a cosplayer and you feel that you are being harassed, or you spot someone being creepy, find a Rover.

We deal with all sorts of these situations each year. Perverts inevitably think they can take up-skirt shots, or they can stalk "cute girls", or any number of things. They touch harrass and people inappropriately, all under the guise of "being a fan" and when it happens, we deal with it as appropriate.

We do care that you have a safe and fun experience at our convention, and we are here to help. We aren't just the "fun police" we are so often accused of being.

I'll monitor this thread for a day or two (unless it goes nuts with replies I can't help with) but you can always email [email protected] with questions or concerns. We'll do our best to help you or refer you to someone who can.

Rovers have procedures in place for dealing with "repeat offenders." I can't really share specifics, but we keep logs of who has done what, and if they come up more than once, they may lose their badge for a day, or the entire convention. They may be "blacklisted" and be banned from FanimeCon forever. Or, they may leave in a police car, depending on what they did & how many times it happened.

You know what really grinds my gears?

Why do people have to block the middle of the hallway taking pictures?

I figure that people would have common sense, but I see this happening at con all the time.
Is this really hard?
I am trying to understand the logic here. :(

spycker

You know what grinds my gears? Girls rejecting me taking their awesome cosplay picture, yet they go to the handsome " HOT PIECE OF ASS GUY "

me: hello! do you mind if i take your picture?
girl: i do mind
me: ok thank you!
girl: omg look at that hot guy over there! lets go ask for a picture together!

Yeah...im really polite and accept rejection...

Lucifargundam

Maybe enforce a "don't stop in the middle of teh walkway" rule?

As far as being rejected for a picture, nothing can be done about that.

We do ask people to keep main walkways clear, but we can't be everywhere at once.
