My 360 I used to have had redring but i can't remember how i fixed it. My ps3(1st gen) just now has the blinking red light of death. I saw some videos saying for me to pull it all apart and replace the heatsink on the cpu/gpu... but thats something i really dont like dealing with when it comes to expensive parts.

What're your experiences with console death or illness?

I had the first gen PS3 when it was fairly new to the market. After 5 years, my console died and I just bought a new one since I don't want to buy spare parts and was planning to repurpose the HDD.

I have most consoles since 1979, and I've only had problems with the following:

NES and Twin Famicom - trouble playing some games, stuck in reset cycle or garbled graphics.  Solution: cleaned out the system with compressed air and cleaned game connector pins with a lint-free cloth.

Playstation - randomly couldn't load data during gameplay, video got choppy.  Solution:  Turned on it's side or upside down, plays fine this way.

Dreamcast - randomly stops reading disk during gameplay.  Solution: still working on it.  It's either the lid switch is off, making the console believe it is open, or laser has weakened.

XBox and PS2 - No longer play DVD movies, can still play games and video within games.  Solution:  unresolved, I just watch DVDs elsewhere now.

sounds like a disc speed problem. perhaps dust built up inside and is slowing down the disc?

I believe this might be a codec problem- that's just what I heard though. If older dvds dont play on it anymore- than that's not the problem.
