Yeah, the scheduling looks pretty good so far!

Good afternoon old schoolers!

We're within two months of FanimeCon 2019. We've been tentatively confirmed at our usual time (6pm) and what is now our usual place (Gatherings G3) on Fanime Friday. We'll have a MUCH better handle on operating the gathering at location G3 this year. I don't want to get ahead of myself but I think this gathering's growing pains are behind it. I'm also going to be way more active here from this point forward, so if you have any questions - send them my way!

With less than two months until Fanime how about we resume the tradition I added to the gathering - a few old school anime openings and endings each Saturday and Sunday! Starting off with Gunsmith Cats, a very enjoyable little three episode (honestly a long one-shot) OVA based on the popular manga.

Continuing with some old school anime OPs this weekend, a true classic of mid 1980's anime style and substance.

Good afternoon old schoolers!

Looking at the current gathering list, it's incredible how many gatherings have been submitted for this year! Things are still moving along unchanged for the Old School gathering, 6pm on Friday at location G3. With that, here are a few old school anime openings to kick off this weekend.

I'll start with the series that your gathering hosts will be cosplaying from. Cyber Formula is a superb and fairly realistic take on upper echelon motorsport. The third series, Zero, has always been my personal favorite. Mokkori Cosplay will be bringing back our Sugo Corporation pit crew (Double-One / Zero era) cosplay for the Old School gathering!

Continuing this weekend with more old school anime openings. Amazingly we're getting a second shot at a release of this one, Galaxy Express 999.

Interesting English subtitle history - after having a high-quality fansub get a couple dozen episodes in, Crunchyroll acquired the distribution rights and Toei created a quick and dirty English sub of the entire series for their service. Then a company who had no business acquiring the rights for a DVD release, essentially got the license and began to sell the low-resolution minimal Crunchyroll stream on DVD. Fans knew better though, no one bought it, and only one box set was released. Then, quite surprisingly, late last year Discotek Media announced they would be releasing the entire series (all 113 episodes) as three Blu-ray box sets with a brand new upscale - a full deluxe treatment. It is truly the best time for old anime.

Continuing on, a series that had its first English subtitled release just this last October! While many in the West may recognize Zillion from the old Sega Master System video games, the Sega Light Phaser design used as the laser guns in the series, and maybe the Zillion laser tag sets (which made their way to Brazil) - the series is well animated with a distinct style and has some great music. Well worth taking a look!

Closing out this weekend with Albegas, the series that was originally slated to be part of World Events Productions' Voltron series along with Armored Squadron Dairugger XV (Vehicle Voltron) and Hundred Beast King Golion (Lion Voltron). After the runaway success of Lion Voltron and the lukewarm reception of Vehicle Voltron (which was unwarranted as Dairugger is a really good series on its own), a continuation of their re-write of Golion was comissioned rather than adapting Albegas. Footage of Albegas was also slated to be used in an unreleased laserdisc arcade game, Cybernaut.

Good afternoon old schoolers!

Another week behind us and FanimeCon 2019 is that much closer.  We'll have a bit of an announcement later this weekend but first let's kick off some old school anime openings with a few having to do with law enforcement (of varying types).  Starting with Future Police Urashiman - apologies if the theme song gets stuck in your head.  MID-NIGHT SUB-MA-RIIINE!  Side note, the playing cards shown about 45 seconds into the opening are a parody of the ace design Nintendo used on their playing cards of the era.

Continuing along the same theme with the television adaptation of Patlabor, which followed the success of the OVA and first film. Our Patlabor cosplay (captains Kiichi Goto and Shinobu Nagumo) are currently out of the rotation for FanimeCon 2019 but will reappear at future events.

Good morning old schoolers!

Just about a month to go until FanimeCon and the Old School Cosplay Gathering!! Hope everyone is doing well and their convention and cosplay plans are coming along nicely. For old school anime openings today, I'm going to indulge myself a little as it was announced today that the City Hunter - Shinjuku Private Eyes theatrical movie will have screenings in US theaters ... AND the film will be released on home video in North America ... AND the original anime will be rescued and re-released as well, all courtesy of Sunrise and Discotek Media! Easily one of the greatest announcements for old school anime, at least in my opinion.

To that end, here are some City Hunter openings and endings, starting with the original. Still my pick for the "most 1980's" anime opening ever. While City Hunter has an amazing sound track (even the first episode uses five songs off the first album), the original opening theme performed by Kahoru Kohiruimaki has always been my favorite. Decided to go with an encode of the old ADV subtitled release that is floating around.

Continuing on with the second opening from the sequel series, City Hunter 2. Discotek Media's official announcement is that ALL the City Hunter anime will be re-licensed and re-released - all four TV series, the three anime OVA specials, and the three anime TV films, in addition to the new theatrical animated film currently showing in Japan.

Okay, I'll ease off of the City Hunter madness. So far the gatherings list for Fanime is pretty incredible, with a few classic fandom gatherings returning! One of which is Evangelion, which as per the current schedule will have a dedicated gathering on Saturday at noon. Eva cospeeps, feel free to double up and attend the Old School Gathering as well if you're also cosplaying on Friday evening!

And to finish up for this weekend, Outlaw Star - as we are always pleased to see the Outlaw Star crew at the gathering!

Absolutely!  As long as I attend FanimeCon, I plan on hosting the Old School gathering.  Since taking on hosting duties four years ago, honestly it just has been getting better ever year.  Nothing at Fanime means as much to me, as if it wasn't for attending this gathering years ago I probably would have never began cosplaying.

Good afternoon old schoolers!

Less than a month until Fanime and the Old School Cosplay Gathering - that's just crazy!  Personally, I'm definitely feeling the con crunch as months remaining have now turned into weeks.  Thankfully I'm almost finished with my cos-plans but there's still a lot to get done.

Going to kick off the weekend right with a few old school anime openings, as is standard.  First one today is a series that was recently released on Blu-ray with English subtitles - I actually just bought it last week during the Sentai Filmworks sale and it should be delivered today.

Resuming with a few more old school anime openings for today, beginning with a modern classic - although it's over twenty years old. As I said at our "Vintage Anime - Name That Year!" panel last year, if you were Ed's age when Cowboy Bebop premiered, now you'd be Jet's age - crazy.

Hasn't been enough shojo so far this year, so here's my personal favorite shojo series - celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, meaning it began the same year FanimeCon was first held.

Good morning old schoolers!

Fanime is closing in fast! I hope anyone that was on the housing waitlist has found success in obtaining lodging, and if not then obtained alternate accommodations. Personally the next three weekends are going to be big cosplay pushes, as new stuff is finished up, old stuff is brought out to be freshly pressed and checked, and wigs are to be styled (groan).

Starting today's old school anime OP's with a true classic and a staple of Tatsunoko's catalog.

Continuing on today with a reasonably forgotten series. Primarily known in the West with extensive rewrites as the third generation of Robotech, the original Japanese series is an interesting war drama and highly recommended over the English localization.

Two weeks now, aaaaaaahhhhh!!!  Thankfully pretty much everything is done.  One more test fitting and one more run through my Saturday panel and I should be all set for Fanime - other than wig styling next Saturday but only two this year, and Haruka and Michiru aren't that complex for how I style them.

Good morning old schoolers!

In the home stretch, less than two weeks to go! I sincerely hope that your Fanime plans are further along than mine at this point! Kicking off the old school anime OPs with the Gundam series that lead to mainstream appeal in the West. Not the greatest series in the franchise but it sure did resonate with people when it was localized.

Good evening old schoolers!

Here we are, one week away from the 2019 Old School Cosplay Gathering!!  Weather has been quite unstable in Silicon Valley over the past week and things aren't looking to change much as we move into Fanime week.  However early predictions are starting to align for clear skies over next weekend - here's hoping.

As this weekend is our last push for gathering advertisement, the old school anime openings and endings posts will be more frequent heading into Sunday and I hope they get everyone in the old school cosplay mood.  Starting with the first ending from Marmalade Boy - the type of weather I'm hoping we are given for Fanime.

As I'm currently stretching / cycling Haruka Tenoh's (Sailor Moon S episode 106) driving suit for the Sailor Moon cosplay gathering on Sunday, I thought this one was appropriate. Remember, even if your cosplay falls into a series that has its own gathering over the weekend, as long as the series if from before 2001 it's good to go for the Old School gathering!

And to close out the old school anime OPs and EDs this year with my favorite anime opening. We'll have one more official post with the gathering location map.

Thank you all for putting up with my tradition of anime openings on the weekends running up to the gathering - I know they're not everyone's thing but I look at this gathering as a celebration of cosplayers who cosplay the older stuff - which in itself is a celebration of the history of anime and entertainment.

See you next Friday!

Less than a week to go, now!! :]

Yep, just a few days to go!

And our final official pre-gathering Facebook post:

Here is the map (over on the Facebook Event Page) showing the location of the Old School Cosplay Gathering, location G3. This is the same place we were last year, the elevated platforms between the stairs and escalator that go down to the video rooms on the very lowest level.

As there is actually a gathering in the location before us, we shouldn't have any issues with clearing convention attendees out of the space prior to the gathering. Additionally we will be proactive in keeping any crowd further back than last year, giving us more room to move around for the gathering.

We will be cosplaying in our Sugo Corporation pit crew uniforms from Future GPX Cyber Formula, so we should be reasonably easy to find. As with every year we have hosted the Old School gathering, we will be taking a full set of unofficial photos that will be provided, totally unaltered and non-watermarked, within one week of the gathering. Be sure to grab a business card (and a ribbon) from us before departing the gathering on Friday evening!

See you there!
