Kazuko:

You do realize that studios have been aware of fansubs for quite a while now? Indeed, it's the creators' rights to control the distribution of their work. If they thought it to be detrimental for you guys to be subbing and distributing the work, they would've followed the example set by Media Factory set two years ago.

Perhaps they realize the potential of fansubs to create more opportunities for marketing? If fansubs of Ouran didn't exist, would sales of the localization of the Ouran manga be as high as they are now? Another example would be the fansubs of Fullmetal Alchemist -- it was an anime, like many, whose existence spread through word of mouth and caught on with the mainstream crowd through its license by Funimation and subsequent airing on Adult Swim. A year back at Fanime, a FMA fansite had a table set up in the Artists' Row and were showing fansubs; one of the people at the table said that Funimation had approved of their specific usage of the medium, presumably because it means free advertising on a relatively small scale.

Why haven't they sued every single fansub downloader on the planet? It looks as though you think that by asking for more of a series, that's what's going to happen:

A small petition like this only shows demand -- albeit demand by American watchers -- for more. It's just up to them whether or not to reply to that demand. They could, say, think oh, so this series has caught on in America! and try to push the license for it to get even more money out of American fans through sales of not only the anime, but related goods, such as officially licensed plushies, cards, or whatnot. The manga's out -- why not the anime? If there's enough sales for the fanbase to prove themselves, perhaps they can go ahead and heed the petition for more.

It's economics at work.

You may think it's really stupid. To the fans of Ouran, it represents hope. To Studio Bones, the plea represents a potential market -- which translates into potential money.

You might want to leave the fans alone -- at least not without procuring proof of the future; unless you can absolutely guarantee something along the lines of OMG, Studio Bones is going to be sue-happy!, then you shouldn't be dragging their wishes along like that.

ps. I personally signed the petition, myself. There's nothing wrong with boosting the market in any way possible, and an extension of a relatively known/popular series is going to do just that.

edit I do realize that this particular user - xbebee_e - only has posted something along the lines of OMG SIGN THE PETITION GET AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. But think of it this way...s/he's trying to actually do something reasonably productive, as opposed to, say, punch the keys, for God's sake.

But I also do agree that his/her (its? XD) methods are rather...out there. ^^;
