Ranma Masquerade Skit '07 Mind-Dump

Thus is the beginning of the concepts and framework of a Ranma ½ skit for the Fanime '07 Masquerade.

That's right. I'm thinking of writing a Ranma skit. How original...
While I don't have a lot of work in it (I'm hardly doing well on my Ranma cosplay as it is), I do know that if I was going to do it, I'd want to do it right. This will probably be sort of my public sketchbook, the place I go to spew forth ideas and concepts for those interested to critique and/or comment on.

Here's my thinking. OF the Ranma skits I've seen, very few take the Ranma curse seriously in terms of effects, if they include it at all. In this case, I've decided to use individuals dressed in black costumes (ALL black, or a dark color that matches the Backdrop) to hold things of droppable, drapable fabric in different colors for cold water, hot water, and in some cases, chi blasts (two people; one holding one end behind the actor/actress making the "blast" and another to run the "blast" towards the person who's supposed to "take" it. Other effects will follow similar suit.

Now, here's some things I've considered for plots:
*The Musical Virus: Nerima is sucked into a giant Musical phenomena! Nobody can do anything without singing! Will Ranma survive? Will Happosai REALLY try to bother singing? (POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: Not everbody is able to sing, I'd have to write a rather large piece to do it to, timing would have to be SNAPPY)
*Manga scene re-enactment: Basically, one of the manga stories redone. (POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: Booooooriiiiing, unoriginal, not all facets can be recreated on a stage)
*Water Elemental: An oni decides to make mischief by draining some major waterways and water outlets in Nerima. Can the Nerima Wrecking Crew defeat this foe before the water's all dried? (POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: Curses besides Ranma's, other Water effects)

More to come as I think of it.

I'm hoping that when the time comes to write the actual script that, yes, it will fit the time allotted (which, as of now, I don't know. >_< could someone please provide this bit of info?), more or less. Right now I'm just trying to get some concept work covered.

The musical idea and/or the manga story reproduction would probably amass the most time of the three, although the Musical could be modified for some cases.

If anyone else has any ideas (and, thusly, better ones than my own) to contribute, please, by all means, post them!

o shoot...a Ranma skit! Just wondering...do you need a Gosunkugi for any reason? 'Cause I was gonna dress as Gosunkugi this year. :D

I also had a really random idea for a Ranma skit...how about some sort of John Hughes 80's movie-type thing? With Ranma and Akane as the popular couple, Kuno as a jock, I dunno XD (I just get this weird 80's vibe off Ranma and I don't know why...o__0)

ZOMG! I had a hilarious idea. Gosunkugi tries to summon a demon to attack Ranma from the netherworld....and instead summons Miroku. :twisted:

That way you could get Gosunkugi AND Miroku in there for a lot of hilarious fun. The cast would have to deflect Mrioku's advancements, along with finding him a way back home.

Also I'm available for consulting as you know, since I've read a ton of Ranma 1/2 fanfics, and I've read the entire series ^^

If you were going to get something from the manga, I would suggest something like the koi fishing rod. It's just too damned funny.

that np I know all about Inu-Yasha i am a huge Rumiko Fan so i know almost all about all her manga's but yeah i like to make fan fic's so i have a big thing going on inuyasha(well mine are fan fic's but they r not pro or any thing because not A+ in english haha)

I dunno about a R½/I-Y crossover, I'm not well-enough versed in the latter, and I'd like to see more Ranma-specific cosplay skits, seeing as there's very few, at least to my knowledge.

However, having a summoning isn't a bad idea. Maybe just have someone summon some sort of Oni that only wants to cause trouble when it's forced out of laziness or something?

As of now, with the exception of (arrogantly, admitted) putting myself in as Ranma (male), there's no casting going on yet. Once I've got the framework in mind, I'll start casting. I've got quite a bit of experience being on a stage and acting, so... unfortunately, I might be a touch strict in my work when this all comes into fruition.

With some thought, I realize that this skit may turn out being hollow, with plot coming second banana. However, I'd think that the skits for Masquerade are meant for the entertainment of the audience, and not for expressing a story; with this in mind, I realize that now it's only a matter of what is wanted IN the skit before the plot-- essentially, how to get around to those things. Thus, what I want in this skit:

*Water changes. Lots of them.
*Chi blasts. One would suffice, maybe two.
*A fitting soundtrack (I can provide this, with some time). This could be optional.
*A complex and intricate fight scene. If you Youtube "Ranma Cosplay", I believe there's one in Latin America or Portugal (something that suggests Spanish or Spanish-like language... please forgive my ignorance), the fight between Mousse and Ryoga is actually well done. If I could reach this level of intricacy and quality in the fight, I'll be VERY satisfied. This will, however, require LIMBER, FLEXIBLE ACTORS UNAFRAID TO MESS UP PHYSICALLY. I'll try to keep the roof flying to a minimum  :P , but there's a level of proffessionalism to it I'd like to keep.
*Takahashi-esque humor. This means I'll be running some gags in this thread, probably in spoiler form (in case some of you want to enjoy the joke in action), so as to get feedback and learn how I could make the joke funnier, better, or more like Takahashi's slapstick sense of humor. There will be some humor more closely related to my own taste, but this will not take total priority over the latter, nor vice versa.

A'ight, I gott'a get back to my SAT Practice test. Keep up on the suggestions! This stuff is GOLD.

*We need Kuno. He's a swirling, bubbling cauldron of skit-making WIN. Comedy, poetry, and violence in a single package. He also serves as an excellent antagonist.

Now, regarding plot: Some of the less extensive Ranma stories follow plotlines of either "Ranma vs. Certain Style Martial Artist" or "The One where Character X does Thing Y and it gets out of hand". I'm thinking around the latter, because the formula is simple and allows for a lot of flexibility.

Maybe if Kuno decided that summoning an oni from another dimension to dispose of Ranma so he could have Akane to himself...

...yeah! Come to think of it, that'd be GREAT!! Yeah. That's what'll be the first part of the plot, at least tentatively, for now. Kuno summons an Oni to dispose of Ranma. Now, because of the formula, we can't just have Kuno summon the Oni and Ranma fight the Oni and everything's happy. Takahashi has a few twists per episode, and I don't think the skit should be any different. Thus, to follow the formula somewhat:

*Oni has a certain weakness or perk that makes things difficult for Kuno.
*Ranma or Akane are vulnerable against something the Oni can inflict.
*Ranma either defeats the Oni by using its unique weakness, or comes to a compromise with it somehow (much to Kuno's dismay)
--*After this exchange, Kuno tries to attack Ranma, who just strikes him and leaves him alone

Also, Takahashi knows that, to make a good Ranma story, nothing can be simple enough. The Oni can't just be a lean, green, killing machine--or, at least, not without displaying some bizarre and hilarious tweaks or problems. Otherwise it'd just be any other Oni. This oni needs to be SOMEWHAT memorable, and so it shall be.
Possible Oni perks (one or a few may apply):
*Only summonable through large bags of Halloween candy or some sort of edible novelty
*Caffeine addict
*Only works Union hours (Which, for onis, are later at night)
*Likes teddy bears/some other cuddly object
*Hates men (other than whomever summoned him)
*Can mimic some housepets (Goldfish, Ferrett... CAT.)
*Part-time Otaku who doesn't know that it's really fighting Ranma
--*When it does, it refuses to fight Ranma, hoping instead to gain his signature... which annoys Ranma FAR more than fighting it.
*Nocturnal (Sleeps in the day)
*Allergic to something in Chi (Or some other allergy)

BTW, none of this is set in stone yet. If someone can cook up a better story than I, which is pretty likely, please post it up! Whatever would make this skit great, should be spoken (typed?) into existance for all involved to hear (see?).

Hmm, although the second one would be fun, I'm not so sure if it'd go over all too well. We all essentially know how he'd react. (First one: Well, if Happosai used that essence, wouldn't it just retrieve Ranma's evil side again? She'd be fighting Kuno, no doubts, but for a different reason. That, and it'd be hard to pull off, even with the effects we've already got planned.)
However, the ideas you've got around Kuno are definitely good. They're close enough to what I'm looking for, I think. Keep that frame of mind and you'll trump whatever I've got goin'.

If anyone can suggest more perks for the oni (if it's an idea you support), please, suggest away. Just keep 'em PG. No "Runs on Viagra" or "More sex-crazed than Happosai" stuff; there's a Hentai room for that, and this skit ain't a Hentai show. (In fact, Happosai's antics are about as far as I'm willing to go, in terms of sexual content, in this skit. Nothing kids under 13 should freak out about, eh?)

(Actually, I've got an idea for a "Bonus" skit for either a quick add-on to the end, encore, or "post-skit" thing. It's basically the ONE thing that Kuno could say about finding out about the curse that would scare Ranma to DEATH.
It would proceed:
*"See, Kuno? I" <-- (Ranma-chan)
<CHANGE>
*"--and I" <-- (Ranma -kun) "are the same person!"
<Pause. Then...>
*"...and?" (Kuno displays indifference)
I suspect that this will gain the applause of the Yaoi fans. This, however, will only be if we can afford in any sense to pull it off. If there's no time, request, or the like to do it, it's not something I'll pursue.)

Not bad..although it seems a little short to me.

Why not have something with a mind changing artifact? The Nerima Wrecking Crew would have to figure out ways into their own body. You could have Kuno hitting himself because he's in that "Foul scorcerer's body" or something :twisted:
