Well, anyway, I'm considering going to the event, just for the heck of it. I asked Dr. O for a second opinion. Heres what he said:

Quote from: "Otakuappreantice"*if you are good enough, and if you can get to EVO, then go.

But which one should I go to?
The L.A. one, or the Las Vegas one?
Here is a good article on how to get to the Vegas part:

Other than that, what do you think?

ooh...evo...i wanna go to! one of these days, when i think my GGXX game is finally up to snuff, i'll hit evo.

daydreams aside, i'd start off going to evowest. scope out the competition of the region before taking on the world

if you end up going, good luck!

p.s.: what do you plan on entering?

Barnes

Guess what game is coming over.

Sweet, that might convince my friend to go with me. :)

I think they will have GG Slash this year, do you like that one? Here you go:

http://www.evo2k.com/tournament/games/ggxx.php

http://www.evo2k.com/finals/

The finals in Las Vegas will be on August 24-26th.

EDIT:I looked around the Shoryuken forums, to learnd why GG is a team tourney, and not singles. Some arguements I've read are:

-Some say teams take shorter than singles (I don't get it)
-Something about making sure the Japanese players DON'T dominate the finals and what-not.

I found the GG rules:

Guilty Gear XX Slash Team Tournament

* Game version: Japanese Playstation 2
* #Reloaded characters, Kliff and Justice are not allowed in tournament play
* Use of EX, Gold and Shadow characters are not allowed in tournament play
* Each character can only be used once in a team of 3 (e.g. two players cannot both play Sol).
* Each player in the tournament must stick with their character of choice for the entire duration of the tournament.
* Each match begins with 1 player from each team playing against each other. The winner of that game remains at the console while the loser must leave and allow another member of his team to play. Once a player has lost, he may not play again. In this manner, the first team to accumulate 3 win (defeating all 3 members of their opponent's team), is declared the winner.
* Teams may choose which order their team members will fight. This decision does not need to be made in advance.
* At the beginning of a match, the winner of a coin flip will be given to option of choosing which side they would like to play on (P1 or P2) or whether they would like to choose their first team member to play second.

Hope that helps.

Double post. I wanted to add something about SSB Melee. Its the rules, but I'm guessing they are not completely final yet. Here they are:

http://www.evo2k.com/playerGuide/gamerules.php

Super Smash Brothers Melee

*  Game version: Nintendo Gamecube
* Game Settings: VS Melee, 2/3 Games, 4 Stock, 6 Minute Timer, No Items
* The stage for game 1 will be selected at random unless both teams can agree on a stage.
* No stage may be used twice in a versus battle.
* After the stage has been selected, the winner of the previous game may change characters, but has to pick first.
* Glitches used to stop your opponent from controlling their character or indefinitely freezing them (Mewtwo's Soul Stunner, the Ice Climber freeze glitch), or any glitch or trick that freezes the game or makes it unable to be finished are banned and will result in the immediate forfeit of the entire match.
* Tactics such as Peach's Wallbombing and Jiggly's Rising Pound are allowed as methods of recovery or to maneuver around the stage. Using them (or any similar tactics) to excessively stall a match, such as dropping below levels intentionally and stalling underneath, is banned. If by using one of these tactics, you have put your character in a place to lose a stock by ending the tactic, a judge may force you to stop and lose a life and continue the match short a stock.

Those sound pretty similar to Asa's rules for his lobby tourney thing.

i think it means the bracket will be smaller, making less matchups. im not too sure about how long it'd take, though

BP!

I plan on going to EVO next year. Need to really kick up my 3rd Strike game a hell of a lot. I need to get a copy of the game, and practice a lot. The only time I get is when I go to SVGL. I need more practice for EVO.

I love support for evo and everythihg(since i've been in this scene for a decade now and have supported it full force),

but here's a little bit of advice. Most people overestimate themselves in games... a lot.

Here's some examples of things that should help in first recognizing if you're even close to being tournament wother for different games.

MvC2:You play the big9... you can block magneto mixups well, you know what a battery character, point, and 3rd characters are and why they are called the such. You can do all guard crush setups and you know timings for when and why to push block specifically to get out of different setups and lock downs.

CvS2: You can roll cancel atleast 90% of the time you attempt it(unless you're playing K). You know zoning and footsies really well.

3S: you can hit confirm, you know what charge partitioning is, you can parry decently well(as in opponent does a block string with ken such as... c.short c.short c.strong s.rh) and you know the c.strong or s.rh is coming and can parry it. You can beat a turtle chun by rushing her down...

I'd add more for other games, but that's not the point. I suggest a lot of people that are thinking of going to EVO to play, to d/l tournament videos and study them, and completely understand what's happening. Understand why RX's double mk.tackle into headbutt is hard. Know that one command grab with Makoto means you lose a round. Know how to get around RC Honda in CVS etc.

I support people coming, but as a player, it's not worth it to waste 30$+ on entry fee if you're not even close to competition videos. There's plenty of videos on youtube, or on websites you can find links from on shoryuken.com. Come though to watch. It's an amazing experience to see the world's best going at it at fighting games, and see how these games were intended to be(and many times surpassing) played.

About the team tournament for GG. Time is a major factor at EVO since you have up to 200 competitors, it can take upwards to 20 hours to do some games. So for guilty gear having teams shortens this. Teams will have 3 a team so two teams will have a maximum of 5 games between them instead of indiviuals you would have 6 players having to go round robin which would take 15 games minimum.

Japan is far superior than the US in guilty gear. We don't even come closed. For the most part only "good" players from Japan come for GUilty Gear, their top demolish our best easilly.

Advice though, study videos, and if you can't follow the subtleties that happen then chances are you're not ready to compete.

Asa_Gohan

Well what do you think Im doing >.> Ive been at Melee for 2 years and Im still not good. Better then a lot of people but still crap...and I mean those who have no understanding of advanced tactics

Some questions:
I'm considering using a camcorder to record matches at EVO.
Will I need permission to do so?
If so, how will I get that permission?

You can record matches and stuff via camcorder, I'm not sure about the regionals, but for EVO itself, you cannot post the videos online.

EVO sells DVD"s of all the matches, so posting up videos will deter people from buying(It can advertise but it's unsanctioned). If it'sfor personal use though, by all means, record show your friends... the fighting game scene has been slow lately, more new faces would be nice. You guys are near SVGL which is sad, because there aren't a lot of 3S players up there. You guys have the best CvS2 players in the US though... and no one plays marvel up there.

I never followed Smash Bros. as I never found it my type of game.

Asa_Gohan

many think of it as slow  but its really very fast paced.  Ive been in matches were noobs come up asking if were playing in lightning melee. But not like...GG fast...No way faster.  Though it can get that fast if it was like Fox vs Fox on Yoshi's Story. Small stage+Two fast characters= lots of action but yeah...
