How did this topic go south so quickly?  Oh, yeah.

Anyway, go back to the original post.
Quote from: "Ayanami Rei First Child"Okay...I'm thinking about going to one of my classes and handing out a paper on different anime according to Genres. Do you guys have any suggestions?^^; Keep in mind none of them have watched anime before <.<;
It's just a simple request for suggestion that's open to anyone.  There's no request to rate others suggestions, just some freindly input.  Thats all.  maybe we could start over again, and be constructive.  :D

And what is Tonde Buurin?  :?

Seriously...what the Hell is WRONG with you people to spew out paragraph after paragraph of hatred over eachother over a simple thing as giving out anime to new people? I'm trying to HELP people and make a simple list for newbies...not make a thread to tear eachother apart! We are TRUE fans and we are BETTER then this!  :evil:

No... that's the thing, most people aren't true fans. And also, people overthink their fandom when they give out requests like this. Most people name off things they like, or that they think are "good" for the genre, not good for people just starting the genre.

Spouting out names and not putting thought into something is detrimental to the project. If you showed things like, Chocotto Sister, Sugoiyo Masaru-san, and Paranoia Agent to people that have never seen anime before, chances are... they will not want to continue watching.

But if you show things like, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Nana, Inu Yasha, chacnes are a lot of prejudgments that they had about the genre(it being just for kids, or being nothing more than cartoon porn... and the such) will be wiped out and they will become interested. As their tastes become more refined, they can pick up more series and expand their horizons.

(Funny how I'm going into advertisment... and this is a fundamental thought process for that profession).

ADV has a line of "starter" anime titles, called Essential Anime. It includes classics like Eva, Nadesico, and stuff. There's also something called "Anime Test Drive" a cheap DVD with like 1 episode in it.

Hmmmm....yeah I like how you balance "Good Anime" versus "Good For Newbies Anime". Ranma 1/2 is pretty good, but with all the boobage, it can give off the wrong impression. I want to thank everyone for their help.

Also I LOVED Excel Saga even if I didn't realize it was supposed to be parody of a lot of stuff from Japan ^^;

Although since it IS so silly...and cracked out....and features a guy with pedo tendencies....I'm not going to reccomend it.

Ooops, forgot about the Pedo stuff (havn't watched Excel Saga in a while)  :oops: I guess it might help if you gave us a general idea of the type of people you're introducing to Anime, and if there's any boundries of subject matter not ot cross (obviously, pedo is one).

QuoteAction: Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuh... I'm bad with action.

I would say Utawarerumono! Its really good...or something classic like princess mononoke (did i spell that right?)

Definatley bring up Hayao Miyazaki

Annnddd should I just say my favorites? It really depends on what kind of person they are and what they are into...but I am a really big KAWAII lover...so stuff like Azumanga Daioh (crazy cuteness) uhmmmm or like...manabi straight,

AND DEFINATLEY let them know that anime is not limited to DBZ...i hate it when people say stuff like that

Hope that helped a little ^.^

Makoto Shinkai. 'nuff said.
MARIACHI, the Mixed Apparatus for Radar Investigation of Cosmic-rays of High Ionization, is an apparatus for the detection of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) via bi-static radar using VHF transmitters!

I think a good Miyazaki film is a good way to get just about anybody started. Mononoke-hime is good, but its kinda weird (especially at the end) and can be hard to follow. And Howl's Moving Castle is just plain shallow. I'd say something like Totoro or Kiki, or even Nausicaa or Spirited Away.

The only problem with Ghibli is that their films are very unique, and not really representative of anime. But KawaiiAngel brought up a good point in that a lot of people are turned off of anime because they think it's all DBZ and Pokemon, and nothing really shatters that preconception quite like Studio Ghibli ^_^

Most people that are turned off by anime don't this it's like DBZ. Most of them think it's either Pokemon... or Angel Jibrielle(don't ask if you don't know).

I can confidently say that most of the people that watch it in the US, started off with shows like Dragon Ball Z, or Sailor Moon. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were huge reasons why I got into it(The biggest reasons being Doraemon and Anpanman).

In general, any show that you'd have to read liner notes to understand(Azumanga Daioh is an example, PaniPoniDash, Kami Chu although all three of these are great shows...).

AzuManga strikes me strangely to be honest. I understand the appeal of it for a western audience, but I don't get why a lot of people hold it so highly. To be honest, a lot of the content was so culturalized that even a lot of Japanese people don't get some of it. Like the whole sea cucumber conversation and hemmerhoids. That's very intelligent use of wordplay.

It seems to me that the fans that make such a huge deal out of azudai(Again I love this series a lot so I'm not bad mouthing it) are the ones that don't really understand it but try to form their own sphere of it. My friend and I swear to each other, that if we're in Japan and we hear a random foreigner screaming out "SATA ANDAGI!" repeatedly for no reason I'm gonna slap them in the back of the head. The reason that joke is funny is because Ayumu is from Osaka... and she's acting more touristy/stupid than the rest who are from Tokyo. Sata Andagii is just... fried sweetbread.

Anyways, off that tangent. A lot of Ghibli stuff would be good, but not all. Laputa, Mononoke Hime, Nausicaa and the such. On the other hands, Porco Rosso, Totoro(unless they're young), the one with the tanuki whose name is escaping me at the second.

Azumanga is one of my favourites for a variety of reasons (it should be noted that I have only read the manga...Ive only seen a few episodes of the anime.) First of all it was really REALLY funny to me. And I almost cried at the ending, and that doesnt happen terribly often to me, but for some reason I just thought it was really really sweet. And it just pushes all of the right buttons for me. I honestly dont know exactly WHY I like it so much. Its just so good ^_^0

Also, it should be noted that one of my favourite jokes (in any language) remains "How do you turn water into ice?"

Though "What's Michael Jackson's favourite color?" is pretty close.

Honestly I think that Azu is sooo weird that it becomes funny.  I can see how some people would think its just out there, and I guess you have to have the right kind of humor for it.  But if you are really in to learning more about japanese culture, its really interesting to read up on all the little side notes on it all ^.^
