Would it be possible to have, like a designated area for resting/sleeping? (for odd hours of the day, maybe like 2AM to 6AM or something)

Stormfalcon

That's what we call "hotel rooms"

As posted elsewhere in the forums, they can't have people sleeping in the convention center, whether in designated areas or not.  Laws and regulations being the primary factor in this.

What Stormfalcon said.

Besides, if we had a "designated area for resting/sleeping" people would just go there to sleep instead of getting and staying in their hotel room. You know how many people would try to sleep at that area. Ontop of that, what about the crime? I wouldn't want to waste FanimeCon's man power just to have a rover watch over people sleeping.

Though I also do not agree with the sleeping in the convention center I WILL inquire about a few areas designated especially for Fanime fans with handicaps that would be in need of seating along the way. A few benches with a sign made up with the handicap insignia?

ya know, thats what fanime is missing. I was hoping they could rent some plastic plants and a small tiny fountain and some lawn chairs and you can rest there.....erh, wait a second, I just described a pool O_O!...

DAMN!

FanFicGuru

There are chairs scattered throughout the convention hall if I remember correctly.

But, yeah...everyone has pretty much covered why a "sleeping area" is a really bad idea. Rampages to try and grab a "free" cot...adolescent guys and girls sleeping in the same room...etc...the list goes on. It's just asking for trouble.

No offense, but in the great grand scheme of things, getting together the money for a hotel room granted how much time you have before the convention isn't impossible. Besides, it's much nicer than having a cot or something to sleep on.

And if you can't afford it or can't stay in a hotel because your parents don't want you to, chances are a "free sleeping area" that would be less regulated or supervised as hotel rooms would be even more ridiculous.

So I guess all we're here for is to fill the blasted hotel rooms...

Maybe I _SHOULD_ plan a trip to the Santa Clara County Jail then for Memorial Day -- because if it goes as badly as last year, that's probably where I'm going.

Being able to stay in the hotel rooms is a bonus. Get together with some friends, it's not that ridiculous.

Or you can whine about it. Whatever you want.

For those of us with handicaps (I've got a chronic pain disorder and nerve damage in my legs), there are benches all along the halls of the convention centre, there's the cafe/seating in the dealer room, there's the internet area near the entrance to the Hilton, there's the Starbucks in the basement, there are the chairs near stage zero.. There's plenty of places to stop and "catch your breath" so to speak, and like everyone else metioned, there's hotel rooms for sleeping. There's really no need for more rest spots, I don't think. I was fine last year, and I'm a serial abuser of benches, chairs, and anything sittable.

Being able to stay in the hotel rooms can't be a bonus if you talk to the bastards who run this con.

It's almost as if it's a requirement to actually attend the con.  Why they don't just make a 4-day hotel reservation or local residency a requirement to get a 4-day badge is beyond my sense of comprehension.

Yeah, I got escorted out last year -- and it'll happen again this year unless I get hopped up on energy drinks.  Already been banned from one major con last year -- can certainly make it two.

If you're going to insist on breaking con rules and California law, at least have the decency not to gloat about it. Regulations like this are in place to protect people. Protect you against having your pockets picked, having you groped in your sleep, having piles of bodies creating a fire hazard in case of emergencies.

If you don't live within travelling distance of the con and can't afford a hotel room you probably shouldn't be going in the first place.

Moondancer

It always amazes me how some people will attend a con, without making any prior arrangements for crash space. I've seen people sitting in lobbies holding card board signs that read something like, "Willing to pay small fee for floor space, plz!?"

Though one con I went to had a room reserved for volunteers who didn't have a room of their own. The con rented it, and had a cap on how many folks could stay in it. I think it was based on how many hours you worked, and had to sign in or something. It was years ago.

Personally I like having a big comfy bed (as my personal bed is only a twin and in desperate need of new mattresses), even I have to share it with someone. Granted I don't mind sharing beds...well that's another matter entirely. Mmmm *Makes note to doable check with roomies that they are set* I forgot the point of this post...Oh yeah, comfy beds.

Ta,

I live in San Jose and I know of some nice hobos that might let you share their bridge. They might require some compensation though since I know they are quite protective of their space. That's always an option.

I'll stay with the civilized route since when most people visit a town they don't live in, they make arrangement to sleep somewhere other then public property.

Local residency? What?

Find a friend to stay with, or get a hotel. It isn't rocket science. If you can't do either then it sucks to be you...but we're not going to cry about it.

Enjoy getting banned from your second major convention...if you find it something to be so proud of.

In the meantime, we should have this thread locked because any further discussion is pretty pointless. It's not going to happen.

Isn't this darkstar fellow the same guy who said the con should shut down at midnight just because he didn't want to get a hotel room?

I wouldn't be surprised. In any case, I'll say again that this thread should be locked.

Uh, ok...

I should note that we may be setting up a lounge area in J1/J4 (near the Hilton side). I don't know the specifics (aside from no sleeping) but it should offer some R&R during the dance or in general.
