So, I'm gonna cos-play this year and I did some research. As a fat person, I don't want to make a complete morron out of myself by doing a cos-play that would make the center of attention of a not-so-good reason. It would seem others don't have this same mentality... Anyone ever seen that cos-play of the fat chick doing Yuna from Final-Fantasy? Bad. I don't want to be her. I understand that people are comfortable in the skin [and fat] they're in, but... Please don't cosplay Kasumi if you're fat... You make us look bad. As for me, my cos-play of choice will a Shinigami from Bleach. The kimono covers up my not-so-tight-arms and the bottom half is nice and flowy..... Whee. I'm gunna buy a wig and get some make-up n' stuff. I'm not trying to be mean twords me fellow fat people, but I just want folks to REEEEEAAAAALLLY consider their cos-play befor doing it... Maybe the Faye cos-play won't be the best this year? ;)

One year @ Fanime, I saw a fat Mai from King of Fighters... :-X

Cosplay is about being who you want to be.
who cares if you look good in it.... though it DOES help.

I understand that it helps and I do agree with you, but would you like to see a 245 pound Ranma (girl type) in a chinese-style dress... I say Nay! I'm gunna be myself with out being a ding-ding in the process. =3

deonchan

I am in the same boat.

With my body type I am pretty much stuck with Barrett from FF7 aka Segre FFSW or like a Bigdady from Bioshock (my original idea)

I mean I couuuuuuuuld be a chocolate E. Honda but *shudder* yeah kill that last idea.

semi OT: My bouncer partner and I were mistaken for Mr. Smith (Matrix agents) when we were on duty last year  ;D Maybe that'll work...

A few years ago, a good friend of mine cosplayed something skimpy.  Her boyfriend warned her, that because of her weight, someone would probably make fun of her or say something bad.  Well..  it happened.  He warned her.  I warned her.  As much as she loved the character, it wasn't worth it.  She was unhappy the entire con.  Dress responsibly is all I can say.

I'm a thin person, but I'm also older.  I'm starting to realize what is appropriate in dressing when it comes to cosplay.  I don't see it appropriate for someone to see, my ol' wrinkled rear.
I'm not a Mecha Anime fan..

Attackthbloo

I'm a big girl too. At first I was like "OMG FAT WOMEN AND SKIRT!" ><

But now, if some one wants to dress up as a decent anime person and they're over weight, I really feel it is the person's choice to do so.

But fat skimpy stuff, no. I feel like even some of the skinny chicks can't even do it do to their shape.

I don't know though  ;D

BrightHeart76

Wow.  Just wow.  I can't believe you would post this.  Free speech and all, I won't argue your right to say it.  But Good Gravy, what a hateful thing to say to people who just want to express themselves.   I have a million nasty things I'd love to say, but I'll just let karma have it's way with you.

(To clarify I'm really just responding to the original post.  I didn't read a lot of the other posts.)
Sometimes I'm glad I became a teacher.  Other times I wish I had simply become a ninja.

i third this motion! if you're having fun cosplaying and it's not offending anyone (thankyouverymuchsailorbubba) what should it matter if you arent built exactly like whoever you're dressed as?

I have to agree with you. It doesn't matter what your body type is, some things are better left in the anime/video game/whatever. There is such a things as WAY too skimpy, wether you have the body type for it or not.

I don't believe it was fair to say those things you said but freedom of speech and all but...

I am also a big girl! I weight about 230 but I pick people I can get away with or take proper precautions to make cosplays work! Like playing the female version of Choji from Naruto, he's the biggest character and is the stereotypical 'fat friend' but I'm doing it tastefully by making a skirt not too short and a tanktop that isn't too tight.

It's more about being appropriate to your comfort level! I'm a semi-professional musical theater actress and I'm the biggest girl in our company but that doesn't mean I can't dance, or sing, or look as beautiful as all the skinny b*tches I work with! I don't care what people say about me or think because that's their opinion but if I feel comfortable and pretty and correct to the character then my job is done! ^^

I agree with the age point. I'd love to do Mireille from Noir, but I'm past the age where I can effectively handle the costume (although I could once upon a time). Now I just wear kimono and let it go at that. Me in a miniskirt? Baaaaaad idea.

quantbits

a trend I've noticed is the females tend to side with "do whatever you want!", and guys with "dress realistically."

Although I do encourage cosplayers to dress to their body shape, they can do whatever they want.
As long as no private parts or any flesh near those areas are showing, I'm more than happy to address them as a person with equal rights and attention.

Simple as that.

Hanha

Yeah, at least it's not like a fat Felicia from DarkStalkers I saw once *shudder*

I'm also pudgy, but as the costume covers my gut I'm... decent

Ska_Kitti

My hubby is a bit on the heavyset side. I make his costumes for whatever. The way I've gotten around his size is have him cosplay a mascot that he enjoys. This year it's Empoleon from Pokemon and I'm cosplaying as Dawn. It can be difficult to make a mascot, however, if done correctly, you'll be praised as "the huggable Mokona" or something. I also have a few big pudges and know the horror of picking a costume. :] Good luck on your costumes.

Hoi... this post is bold and straight up. It's really not my place to say who should be wearing what and I really don't care one way or the other. BUT. Tons of people do have a problem and something rude to say, so for larger people it is something to consider before spending time and money on a skimpy costume.

I'm not fat, but I find myself unable to pull off cosplay by my own standards. I tend to have the feeling, "I want to cosplay this character, but I also want to pull it off.", so if I feel I can't express my love for the character while being able to cosplay her well, then I don't and cosplay a character I love and can see myself cosplaying as. Cosplay is a form of expression to show your love for that character, so as long as that is your reason to cosplay, I don't see a problem with larger people doing so. Cosplay is also an opportunity to "be" the character you love. In some cases of mine, I cosplay the character I like and can see myself being instead of my favorite from the series, instead of being my favorite character, so I can adore my favorite character while still expressing my fandom.

Though, I do understand, in many occasions, larger people in cosplay look... aesthetically displeasing. I mean, they're free to do so, but it's good to have some consideration of their own appearances. It's okay to be confident and comfortable with themselves-- this is a good thing, but at the same time, some take it for granted and wear something indecent and unflattering for their body frame. But it's not always all about weight-- most people find trashy costumes trashy no matter who it's on. However, if it's just tastefully revealing, someone shapely and thinner would most likely look better than a larger person... just as how blonde hair doesn't work with every single person. It's all about what features are able to pull of what, because I know there are attractive people who are still large.

It's true that by general preferences, people prefer people who aren't fat. But it's not always about weight and body-size. It could be a number of other things. Their faces could be unattractive, their hair might not suit them, or their clothes might not match their appearance. I... should be honest and say, some people are just unattractive and can't do much about it, but it's rare when someone is so unattractive that they can't do anything to improve it. There are many ways to compliment one's appearance, whether it be the right make-up, a suitable hairstyle, and clothing that compliments their body-type and expresses their personality in a positive way.

So being fat shouldn't stop someone from expressing their love for the character... but they could consider, whether or not it's tasteful, if they can pull it off, or if it's suitable for their appearance. You shouldn't discourage fat people to cosplay altogether, but, promote an idea of consciousness about selecting their cosplays. If being fat is that big of a problem, there's always the option of working to lose weight.

I don't know, man. I think that's kind of awesome. As long as you know that it'd be comedic, but still awesome nonetheless. :V

To the original poster, I will say this:

I have friends who are on the bigger-side, but that doesn't stop them from making very nice costumes and wearing them at cons.  They enjoy the characters they're cosplaying, and don't care if people don't like the way they look or if they get bashed on websites/forums.

Are you yourself not comfortable with your physical appearance that you have to wear a Shinigami costume to hide your arms & body so that people won't make fun of you?

I'm a thin-person myself, and people bash me for cosplaying Jann Lee from Dead or Alive because I don't have bulging-muscles on my arms.  Do i care?  Of course not.  I enjoy DOA, i like the character, and I have fun cosplaying him at cons.  All of that negativity I hear about (I don't bother reading it) doesn't faze me.
