Hey, guys!
Since last years thread was such a success, I decided to create a new thread for this year!
Most of us contestants are super chatty and tend to want to start talking about things other than rules in the Official Karaoke Contest Rules thread.
This thread is a place for karaoke contest contestants to chat about the contest and plan to meet up at Fanime, etc.
Feel free to introduce yourselves! I'm Christin, and this is my fourth year as a contestant and the third year in a row in which I will have competed. Assuming I don't somehow miss sign-ups, of course! Some of you may remember me as the girl who sang Manten at last year's karaoke contest and that I may be slightly obsessed with Kalafina.
Debating entering...
I don't tend to enter the Fanime contests (though I did last year -- I was the GitS cosplayer who butchered an EGO-WRAPPIN' song), but I'm still tempted.
I'll be doing a ton of open mic, though, so there won't be any shortage of singing from me. ;) I'll probably be there mostly Friday after the contest (likely cosplaying Julia from Cowboy Bebop) and Saturday evening/into the night (likely in my super lazy Mom Lalonde cosplay), and I do have some themed songs planned, to go with the cosplays.
I've been tempted to do all three Fanime contests one year. I have an idea for Accoustikaraoke, but I'd need a decent group for it, and I haven't bothered to get one together and do this. This will be my first year doing the Karaoke Gong show as well, though my sister usually enters. Be sure to look for me -- I'm planning on wearing a...err...modified fancystuck!Rose cosplay. I always wish my friend who plays bass lived closer to me so she could enter Acoustickaraoke! with me. We used to jam. If I could find someone to accompany me on guitar or something, I'd so enter. :b
I'm definitely planning to enter the regular karaoke contest. I have a song for finals, but am still trying to pick the one for qualifying. It looks like this year we only get 2:00 instead of 2:30 like we used to, so I need to find a song that shows off what I've got within a 2:00 timeframe.
Well, my idea is for an a capella group, and I have no talent whatsoever with instruments, otherwise I'd propose that we get together and jam! I wish you luck, though!
Choosing songs is always the hardest. :< I actually already have songs picked out for the SacAnime contest, but I'm most likely not going to enter the contest here with them (if I did enter, I'd choose something different). (hint - it's one of the songs I was going to do this winter when my entry didn't seem to go through, and the song I wanted to do this winter but decided not to because I wouldn't have enough time to learn it...so it's not like I'm really putting -that- much thought into it in advance ;P I might sing the one I'm less prepared for at open mic, though, so I can force myself to get used to it)
Are you going back and forth between a few songs? Maybe if you posted them up, we'd be able to give some suggestions. :3 My musical tastes tend to run a little...different, and I'm not familiar with most anime or Jpop music, so you'd have to link to the songs you had in mind, but I'm perfectly willing to give suggestions if you need help choosing! (I'm not willing to give suggestions if you have no ideas, though, because I'd tell you to do something that you likely wouldn't know or be comfortable with...as I said, my musical tastes are strange, haha)
Planning on entering with a friend. Doing Artist alley and karaoke contest will make for an interesting Friday. At least I have minions to man my table while I'm away.

But only once have I gone to the finals.
I hope to get to the finals this year once again!
My songs are not set yet, but probably kalafina or ghibli songs. I'll be exploring more of my rep later this week.

This is going to be the first time I'm competing, and I hope to actually catch sign ups this year ^^;; Still pretty nervous at the thought that I have to get up on stage and sing in front of people since I personally don't think too highly of my singing voice...But!!! I think it'll still be fun none the less. I have a few songs in mind that I wanna sing, but again, super nervous since this is my first singing in front of a bunch of people @_@

Probably the best thing to do if this is your first time singing on stage is to use the warmup period to your advantage. Use it to practice your song, and get comfortable being on stage. It's a no-pressure environment, since you're just there to practice instead of actually perform, so it might help you quite a bit. It can be scary going up on stage for the first time, but you'll get used to it! (I know that I was always nervous at first, and even though I'm a
permanent fixture of the karaoke room karaoke vet, I still get a bit nervous at contests!)

I have made the finals for the last two years and am really hoping to make the finals again this year. Since I got sixth and then fourth, I'm telling myself that maybe I'll get second this year if the pattern keeps up. XD

Good, good. Be sure to use that time to practice. I always try to sing my contest songs for open mic at a con beforehand, since singing it on stage can be totally different from singing it in my car, but that takes some foresight, or try to choose a song that I know I've done well at for open-mic before, but that limits my options. Basically, I always make sure I've practiced it, on stage.
Once you get up there, you'll probably be fine. It's really a lot less scary than it seems. :) Know that you have us all rooting for you!
I'm not familiar with your song options and can't listen to them right now, but I typically choose something a bit more upbeat for the prelims, something catchy and a little showy that will get the judges' attentions, and for the finals, something slower that can really show off my voice. I think this is standard for most contestants, from what I've noticed -- something that will catch the judges' attentions at first, and then something that will really showcase a voice for the finals.

(I've actually never made it to finals at Fanime...I have at SacAnime, but not here. Then again, last year I totally butchered my song, and that was the first time doing a contest since..'06? ish? so yeah, not really counting that~)
This will be my third year participating in the karaoke contest (as long as I get in) and I'm super excited!
I still need to choose songs though XD I hope I do better than last year and I'm looking forward to seeing all the people I've met through the contest again :)

I would do the original, but it does not have a karaoke version and does not vocal remove well. It's more choir-esque, but this version will do too.

BTW, do you know if Chi is coming this year? If he is, don't let him miss sign ups this year. Last year he forgot to sign up because he was gaming. XD I died inside. Chi needed to compete because he is awesome sauce.
I competed last year and ended up as a runner-up. I'm singing "Matryoshka" and "Kyomu Densen", and hopefully getting a better place! Good luck to all of you!

I competed several years ago, choked on the first song, and did not progress to finals. This year, if my life stabilizes and I'm able to attend Fanime (fingers crossed!) I'd like to compete with less personal pressure involved.

I thought I wouldn't make it to finals, so I didn't prepare a final song...but I ended up being a finalist, so I pulled the first song I knew from the karaoke list haha. Make sure you pick all your songs, even if you think you might not make it to the finals, just like me haha
My history is: I'm 20 years old studying Digital Media Art, Business, and currently working as an English tutor for Japanese international students and an application consultant for a Japanese start up company, Connectionpool. I've been a frontman and guitarist for many bands, but I started a new band called, Minor SetbacK, where we write originals in Japanese. We have so far performed with famous J-Rock/con bands, such as Phoenix Ash, The Stars at Dusk (aka Valkyrie Kiss), and akai Sky. My influences are androp, ONE OK ROCK, Motohiro Hata, etc.
I am planning to compete again, cause I thought it'd be fun to do so again! I hope seeing familiar and new faces next year! :)

Hi guys! I'm entering the main karaoke contest for the first time this year. Hopefully my submission is accepted. This is gonna be my third year coming to Fanime; I've been wanting to enter this contest in all the past years but I've never been able to come on the Friday the contest is held.
I have a quick question for any of you that have been in the contest in the past; if it comes to it, are we able to change our song choices during warm ups/sound check or are the songs we put on our submission set in stone? I've just submitted my form but I may want to change it later :-[

you can change the songs when you check in. but that's the last time. i know that im personally going to change my final song (if i get in) but check-in is the last time that you can change songs

i dont believe they usually do visuals. there arent any projection screens except for the ones facing the stage because of the lyrics
so even if u have visuals, it wouldn't be used

I usually feel like the Fanime contest (since it's a larger con and such) is too ~ serious business~ for someone like me who just wants to sing and have fun...but I might not actually care this year. I guess we'll see how I feel once I get there.

You should do it! Karaoke is all about having fun. Everyone competing really supports one another. While it is a contest and it is semi-competitive, its a fun type of competitive. Kind of like fighting games. Lol! ;D

I've done plenty of karaoke in the past, and while I like doing contests, I prefer them at smaller cons because there seems to be less pressure surrounding the event. Fanime's contest is a bit too large and too serious for me, so I'm always wary of entering. I mostly just like to do open mic so I can make an idiot of myself on stage singing stupid music, haha.
After going through every single song on my iPod, I found that Whole World Happy is probably best as my finals song, and while I love singing Bird of Paradise and can do it even though it is a bit lower than my normal range, I have yet to figure out how to sing most of it in the lower range and then bounce up to the higher notes. (I think I have decent enough range when I'm not trying to sing a register lower than normal...but I have to condition myself to hit those lower notes and can't really come out of that into high notes easily enough to sing that song!) I'll probably still do Bird of Paradise for open mic at some point. My prelims songs are between an easier one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMbB5tiz0Z0) and a much harder/crazier one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1DeVZZvc_E). I can do both, but it'll depend a lot on how my voice is that particular day, because I wouldn't want to blow out anyone's eardrums with those high notes in the JDA song! I'll make use of the warmup period, for sure.
(note -- that second video has a lot of camera flash effects in it, so if you are sensitive to flashing lights, please don't look at it! It's not terrible, it doesn't even bother me and I'm sensitive to flashing lights sometimes, but if you have epilepsy on a hairpin trigger...be careful)
Now to just hope that I can get in with at-con signups. :) I'll be constantly singing at open mic, so watch for the woman singing jazz/late '90s anime themes/cibo matto/GUITAR VADER/Cowboy Bebop music/shibuya-kei, and say hello. (I'll probably be in my Julia cosplay for the contest and Friday night, and likely my Mom Lalonde Saturday night. I have songs prepared to go with each cosplay...bet you'll never guess the ~super secret surprise Cowboy Bebop song~ I want to do as Julia, haha) I'll also be in the gong show -- look for the fancystuck!Rose Lalonde with the...modifications to her outfit. I don't want to say exactly what the act will be, but my sister and I have something really... fun planned for that one. ;)

I'm pre-reg, and I am going to pick it up on Thursday. At least, I think I'm pre-reg. I registered at the end of March, and I know I am part of a group that can pick up their badges early. Friday I can arrive whenever everyone else does, as I live super close to the convention center.

Actually, the spots were filled before the 17th. It's always best to sign up the day the sign-ups open, otherwise you risk not getting a spot in the contest. It almost always fills up before the actual cut off date.

I performed way back in 2008. Not sure if anyone knows me anymore. I haven't been to Fanime for years (I got married, had 2 kids, life stuff, etc). Excited to be doing something fun like this again :)
I realized while practicing I have a really long stanza where my mouth pools with saliva and I don't know if I can swallow it in time before the next line. Oh well, we'll see what happens. :D

I was in that 4+ hour Friday pre-reg line, so I totally missed the contest (and the old-school gathering), but I sang a lot of open mic, and was the luchador in the Gong Show.

Sunday (cosplaying fancystuck!Rose from Homestuck): Ringside Interview (Rhythm Heaven -- for gong show); PAPPAYA (Ego-Wrappin'); jumped on stage during Bohemian Rhapsody
I had a great time! Did everyone else get to sing a lot of fun music? :)
Karaoke contest was an interesting experience!
I was a first time contestant, and not sure if I'll try again ahahaha (but I'll for sure watch!)
I was definitely nervous since I had just learned the lyrics XD
It was pleasant listening to all the pretty voices, even though I was sad I couldn't perform the finale song.
The audience was really really really nice to me, thank you everyone that clapped along.

Karaoke contest was a blast this year!
