General Convention Discussion / Re: B&W Ball!!
May 31, 2011, 11:30:18 PM
Yes, we will discuss this issue with next year's Chair and B&W Ball's head.

Also, don't mind us. We've had meetings all day to finish up the post-con process. I hope everyone understands that the con isn't just Thursday - Monday for us, it's pretty much a week and a half of us being on site and taking nonstop meetings!

Ahhh, I see. Well, good luck to you guys setting up! I promise I won't get in your way~

I'm gonna be up there a couple days early anyway, so I figured I'd ask and see if anyone wanted to do something off-site if anyone else is in the area, really. I'm from SoCal so I usually only attend the convention for just the days I attend, then go home. This year a splurged on plane tickets and I'm gonna be there for a week cause I wanted to have some time to walk around and see the sights. My friend goes to college in SF and she's always talking about the city, so I figured why the heck not? Plus, my traveling buddy wants to see the "Baby, The Stars Shine Bright" store.

- Cy

You could hang around the area in San Jose, but I wouldn't recommend you actually walking around the SJCC. Don't ruin the magic of the whole thing by seeing everything get set up!

Please keep in mind that we negotiate special deals with the hotels for our attendees to benefit you guys. It's not very nice to post a thread like this where the hotel representatives can see them. We want everyone to get along and play nice, afterall.

Official answer: do not stuff your rooms because not only will this annoy the hotels, you're also breaking fire codes as mentioned before.

Day Minus 1 would be hilarious if someone actually did it. I wouldn't mind joining in if someone wants to do something. ^W^

- Cy

Um, we appreciate the enthusiasm and fun you're having at Fanime, but please don't. Day Minus 1 is for senior staff who have to be on site to oversee the actual construction of the con. You wouldn't be allowed to go anywhere or see anything because of all the people running around setting things up. Plus we might even get in trouble for having our attendees wandering around when forklifts are zooming around.

Plus, it's kinda nice for staff to have this day to ourselves before the con and the stress starts.  ;D

ticketing the An Cafe concert was a bad mistake on my part

I'm glad that they didn't put you in any important position after that debacle...

Something I hear during each and every staff meeting and during the con:

"Oh man Chair is such an easy job, I bet he does nothing and just watches everyone else work."

Makes me chuckle.

... I would second or third you joining staff. It really is a whole different experience and one I wouldn't trade for the world.
This is really unfair to those of us who would love to join staff but live several hours away...

It is doable, we do have staff who live just as far away. The thing is, how determined are you to get the information on a department you'd like to join on your own? And are you committed enough to show up at the con without meeting your department head/mates and putting that enthusiasm into your work?

Just to give further idea of how much fun staffing is, and how worthy I feel it is of my time, about 40-50% of the people who attended our wedding were FanimeCon staffers. In fact, Milton who is the Director of Marketing was one of my bridesmen. Yes you read that right, he was a bridesman.

I understand that another day of FanimeCon would be awesome as an attendee, but if that isn't enough for you, I would second or third you joining staff. It really is a whole different experience and one I wouldn't trade for the world.

Serious Business / Re: Peace bonding
February 08, 2010, 12:37:53 AM
We have discussed this among senior staff since the inception of FanimeCon and unfortunately zip ties are the best compromise to allow cosplayers to even have faux weapons on convention grounds. Well, let's put it this way, if there was no peace bonding, things would be very different.

For example, if we allowed weapons to be on site without peace bonding, we would have to compensate by having enough police presence to properly watch over attendees which was 14,000+ as of FanimeCon 2009. The huge problem not only by having a small army of police at the con, would be paying for these fine uniformed individuals. The money would have to come from the events themselves. It would suck to have to get rid of MusicFest, Stage Zero, Black and White Ball, Masquerade, etc. or have the attendees not have con-derived hotel discounts to pay for the necessary police.

When you throw in the liability and our skyrocketing premiums, FanimeCon may not exist beyond another year or two.

Sure, it sounds drastic to put the peace bonding in these terms but imagine telling our insurance carrier about 14,000 attendees who have weapons out and we are allowing them to wave them around, even if just for pictures. I don't know about you, but I see an insurance agent-shaped cloud and our insurance policies with big red VOIDs on them.

So we do what we can to bring you the best show and sometimes that means doing things you don't want to do like peace bonding. Consider them your yearly 'doctor's shots' that keep you healthy the rest of the year.

I think peace bonding is much better than banning any and all types of weapons and props (plastic guns, paper mache swords, walking staff) altogether.

So...if I sign up for ConOps, can I do that instead of my other position?  ;D

Welcome to FanimeCon 2010!

We always look forward to having new attendees come and experience the show that we all work hard to put on.

Please be sure to have a good time and be safe on your trip to Fanime.

To prepare for the trip check out the wonderful advice from your fellow attendees about booking your hotel room, registering early and ways of eating healthy during the convention. While it's all fun and games when you're at con, it sure does make it easy to not pay attention to lack of sleep and nutrition.

Do not hesitate to ask staff any questions you may have because we are here to help you be safe and have a good time. I just ask that you be courteous to our staff as well because we all donate our time to put together Fanime and we also lack sleep and proper food during the 4 days as well.

See you in 5 months!

To go off of PyronIkari's post which was very well worded - thank you - please give us a better idea of what type of anime you'd like to see and specific changes that you would find beneficial.

If the anime that was shown this year was not to your liking, please list specific titles you would like to see next year.

It is true that we were working off of a budget so we could not have as much water available as we had in previous years. Since we did have water fountains throughout the convention center as well as the hotels, we figured that rather than spending $10,000+ on more water bottles, we could put that money toward the actual programming for our attendees to enjoy such as MusicFest, Black and White Ball, etc.

We are in negotiations with the convention on the food prices, but what with the economy, you can only do so much to bring prices down or have special deals for the attendees. We're trying our best since the attendees and our own staff would benefit by not having to pay astronomical prices for food. Again, we're trying to negotiate on everyone's behalf but we cannot control the outcome.

Thank you everyone for the feedback and I hope to be able to provide additional programming that you all will enjoy in 2010!

I'm going to second this topic as well. I'd like to bring a Keyblade, I don't have it yet but it will be full-size and made of aluminum most likely (being custom made for me, for free). Also, I have a gun,

http://300pockets.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Gun-v-2-Pt-1-114442595

It doesn't work like a gun. It's a computer gun (joystick moves the character, trigger fires the ingame weapon, I'm guessing, seeing as I never plugged it in) that I found in the ocean and made pretty. It was all plasticy before, and now it's steampunk.

Would it be allowed?

Since the tip of the gun doesn't have the bright orange plastic on it denoting that it's a fake, I don't think it would be a good idea to bring it. Even with the plastic tip, you would need to go straight to Rovers to have the gun peace bound to you and you may not take it off your person until you get to your hotel room.

FanimeCon has zero tolerance regarding alcohol, violence and anything that could cause violence. That is why if you have a gun for a cosplay, it must be checked by our Rovers staff. Once your weapon has been determined to be fake, then it must be peace bound to you so that our roaming police officers will not have take action against you. We cannot risk the safety of our attendees just because some people want to have a certain prop for their cosplay.

To get a staff badge, you must put in a minimum of 24 hours of volunteer work for Fanime.

Say minimum wage is $7/hr.

24 x 7 = $168 dollars you could have made.

It would be much cheaper to just work those hours on your own and buy a weekend badge than to staff for a weekend badge.

Keep in mind the higher up the staff chain you are, the more hours you put in. I can honestly say that I personally volunteer a few hundred hours for Fanime.

It is not in your best interest to continue making insensitive comments toward the staff and yet still expect to purchase a table on your terms. Be courteous to our staff as well as other volunteers. Again, this convention is run by fans, for fans and we all want to have fun before and during the convention.

Hello everyone.

Please note that we are selling artist alley tables at a very small fraction of the dealer's room price. These tables are being sold as a courtesy to the artistic community so you can sell your homemade wares to the public.

Selling these tables are a service provided by Fanime. As with all services, it is a privilege to rent a table, not a right. If you do not like the way we run the table purchases, you are free to not buy a table.

If you have issues with the way we run our convention, then you are more than welcome to join staff and help us change things internally so that the artistic community may benefit from your contribution.

Pointing fingers and being verbally insensitive to our staff does not contribute to the convention or the public. Simply phrasing opinions in a constructive way will help everyone to achieve these goals.

Remember, we are a convention run by fans, for fans. No one is getting paid to do this - the entire convention is put on from the thousands of hours that each and every staff and volunteer puts in. Let's make it great for everyone!

This is Fanime proprietary info, but I predict 300,000,000.....it may be a bit optimistic though....more than 12?

Eric, there are times I could beat you with an ugly stick.... 300,000,000?!?!?  What are you thinking...  It's a curse for anyone on staff to predict the numbers, especially, anyone in a high position within Fanime.  The last person to tried it was me and I predicted 12,000 for last year and we getting closer to 15,000.  Now you're predicting 300M, OMG, what are you thinking... The entire fracking USA and part of Japan and Europe will be coming to visit, that means the hotel rooms will be going to $5,000 a night, a stale sandwich will go for $125.00 and the convention center will only handle about 50,000 bodies, which means there will be 299,950,000 people looking to get in, wandering around downtown, mugging our attendees to get a badge, registration lines will really be days long and no one gets a break...  Even you...  Just because you cursed us...

C.

That's ok, we'll just add 3 more years to his tenure. That'll show him. Keep pressin that button, Eric...

how ironic.
15 years and weve gone from an attendace of 100 to almost 10,000+
EPIC doesnt even begin to describe it.

Last year, attendees alone were over 13,000. With industry, press, guests and staff, we were well over 14,000.

FYI.
