Title: Attendees at Day Zero (A False Start)
Post by: N.E.R.V.agent220 on January 18, 2010, 12:55:25 AM
Why do attendees attend Day Zero when this day is only for the following:
People who pre-reg want their badges early
     Staffers
     Dealers
     Press
     Guest relations
     Security
     People involved in Swap Meet
The actual day the con starts is Friday morning around 10 AM, Can an attendee hold till then... Day Zero should only pertain to the list above and I still say that Attendees should follow con tradition and start the fun Friday going into Monday.
There should be a rule change about attendees at day zero because the true events don't start till days 1, 2, 3, 4

2009 had the dance, swap meet, select vid rooms and the gaming room open on day zero. For some, these may have been attendance worthy events.

What does it matter if some  people want to attend the "quiet" day? If they're finding ways to have fun and it's alright with the con staff, how is it even an issue?

I go on Day Zero to pick up my Badge and to check out the Swap Meet.

I usually fly in from Canada Thursday morning, check in at the hotel and rest a bit, then head to the con and get my badge, and while I wasn't attending last year, if the swap meet starts early this year again I will totally be hitting it up on Thursday. It's nice to be able to do some things before the con gets insanely busy.

edit: Killed some illogical grammar.

I'll be surprised if they aren't doing a Day Zero Swap meet this year.

I didn't come in until Friday my first year ('08), and changed that to come up Day 0 last year.  Have to say I vastly preferred the Day 0 arrival, and do for  most cons I go to; for Fanime, I have a four-hour drive or so up to San Jose, so it's nice to have a night to rest from that.  I'm also a cosplayer first and foremost, and mine are usually involved enough (or at least time-consuming enough) that I like having a hotel room in which to change.  That and the chance to hang out with friends and chill before the craziness of con picks up is the main reason why I'll do Day 0.  The swap meet and prereg pickup are added bonuses.

Day Zero is perfect. My friends and I take a ten+ hour drive up to San Jose, so it's nice to be able to arrive the day before anything really starts. It sucks to drive that far and miss like.. half a day of funness. That extra day also alows us to rest up, check out the con grounds, an so on. To have a few things to do on Day Zero is even better. Gives us somthing to do in a town we dont know.

FanimeCon now open Day Minus-One.
Attractions to look forward to feature the wide swaths of the public lower concourse offering a vending machine and an ATM for your pleasure. We have also negotiated a lucrative contract with the Starbucks (which may now be a Peets?) to operate during their normal business hours. Attendees, please come early so that you may enjoy absolutely nothing at all......Bonus: if you get in the way of the decorators and Fan Services setting up Registration or Exhibit Halls, you will receive a generous helping of A$$ kicking, served up by yours truly.

Day Zero and Day Minus One... ? :D

imitates Rod from Avenue Q --- My Cup run-neth over! :P

Hmm - knowing some of the rabid fanime fans, they might as well have a pre-registration Line party.

knowing some of the work-a-holic staff there might be a small skeleton crew that might set up for an even earlier swap meet, hang out or some random public event or goof-ing off ness. :P

I'm definitely looking forward to Day Zero.  - and maybe some day a " Day Minus One " ;)

I've never actually attended day zero, but will this year to get a head start on the swap meet. I plan on buying more used than anything else. The swap meet tends to have older merch from old series.

I like arriving that day early. Not only to get my pre-reg badge but also catch up with people I haven't got to see for a year without the distraction of the Con. I will be actually attending Con this year while on leave between my current station and my next one. Which is (and some of you folks may kill me :P) Japan.

Thursday gives you a chance to also get the hotel room in order, find any last minute repairs that need to be done on your costumes, stock up on food and drinks, read over the schedule and generally get ready for Day One.

I sadly would not make it for a Day Minus One. The anticipation would kill me late Day Zero... and no this has nothing to do with Lelouch.

I've been going to day 0 since 2007, I'd rather go to day 0 just to get my badge the room and the check out the swap meet also have a little rest. Plus it's a good way for people that live too far from San Jose. Also you might find some good stuff at the swap meet on thad day. I might go to day 0 again this year.

I had a terrible Day -1 last year and I'd like to complain about the services offered, in hopes that things can be improved for this next year.

1.) The ATM fee was really high and I didn't get a receipt. Also, it paid me crinkled up bills. >:(

2.) My chips got stuck in the vending machine. (I think it didn't like the money?) ???

I was kinda tired after having to vigorously shake the vending machine for my chips (which never fell), so I went to get coffee.

3.) The bartista would not accept my crinkled bills. I had to speak to the supervisor in order to get a coffee. For some reason my coffee tasted like cigarettes and it also burnt my tongue! It kind of shocked me and I ended up spilling it all over myself. >:(

After that I decided to wander around the convention center and admire the decorations that were being put up.

4.) I tried to talk to a girl putting up decorations near Registration, but my speech was slurred due to the burnt tongue. She took me for a drunkard! I tried to explain what had happened to me, by using hand motions in a charades like fashion.

I acted like I put money into a machine, got angry at it cause it didnt drop my item and then shook it. I acted like I came to another machine and it gave me crumpled bills (I pulled out my bills to show her.) I then showed how I got coffee and spit it up and spilled it cause it was nasty and burnt my tongue. She must have mistook my motions as trying to solicit her for sex, cause the next thing I know she pushed me away! :-\

I was still a bit tired from earlier and thus I stumbled and fell, messing up some nice decorations nearby. :(

5.) Then, some guy who swore he was the head of Fan Services assaulted me for messing up the decorations! I would never have believed a head volunteer could get so violent... I don't remember much, but I do vaguely recall being choked by yellow tape... (He never did apologize. :'( )

Yes, this is a joke. <3

This thread is so much win! I laughed SO hard just now. This is why I love Fanime so much -- everybody has a great sense of humor and is really gung-ho about the whole con experience. I wish that AX was like this, but then again, it might take a miracle at the rate things are going now.

That aside, I love Day Zero! I use it to flaunt my joke cosplays every year, and depending on the response I get from them, they either go back into the vault or reappear elsewhere. Last year's joke cosplay was CEO Mokuba, based on a joke between a friend and I about Seto getting killed in a D-Wheel accident and Mokuba taking over Kaiba Corp at age 17. It got a very small response, probably because it was so complicated. The year before that was a Team Rocket Scientist to go along with my friend's Giovanni Cosplay. Nobody knew what the heck I was. Oh well. XP

Other conventions I've been to this year had pretty boring Day Zeros. Nobody was around, especially for PMX's Day Zero. I used that time to try and hunt down the room my panel was gonna be in. It was fun running around trying to find it, especially cause some of the corridors were still dark later at night and my friends and I pretended we were in Silent Hill. It was really funny, so I guess that Day Zero wasn't TOO bad.

The only thing that could make Fanime's Day Zero even BETTER is to have the Karaoke Room open. I love the Karaoke staff at Fanime~ They're so awesome. :3 The only reason I've never signed up for a volunteer position is because I live so far away and I wouldn't be able to go to any staff meetings (if they do that).

Oh man, I started rambling.

But yeah. Day Zero = Win. Day Minus 1 would be hilarious if someone actually did it. I wouldn't mind joining in if someone wants to do something. ^W^

Um, we appreciate the enthusiasm and fun you're having at Fanime, but please don't. Day Minus 1 is for senior staff who have to be on site to oversee the actual construction of the con. You wouldn't be allowed to go anywhere or see anything because of all the people running around setting things up. Plus we might even get in trouble for having our attendees wandering around when forklifts are zooming around.

Plus, it's kinda nice for staff to have this day to ourselves before the con and the stress starts.  ;D

Ahhh, I see. Well, good luck to you guys setting up! I promise I won't get in your way~

I'm gonna be up there a couple days early anyway, so I figured I'd ask and see if anyone wanted to do something off-site if anyone else is in the area, really. I'm from SoCal so I usually only attend the convention for just the days I attend, then go home. This year a splurged on plane tickets and I'm gonna be there for a week cause I wanted to have some time to walk around and see the sights. My friend goes to college in SF and she's always talking about the city, so I figured why the heck not? Plus, my traveling buddy wants to see the "Baby, The Stars Shine Bright" store.

Things get set up? As in people putting things together? That doesn't make sense. How does that connect with fanime magically appearing every year when the magic in fans' hearts wills it together?

Thursday is "Day Zero"

Friday is the start of the Convention because of "opening ceremonies" - it would be kind of odd to have opening ceremonies on "Day Zero"

you dont start counting [techincally] at zero.  :P

you start counting at one, two, three,... ha ha ha! [imitates the count]

Thursday is Day 0 but I reccommend not to go because I am a guy of intergrity and follow con tradition and go Friday. Now you have two choices, On Thursday you could pick up your badge early, go to the swap meet and leave the convention area till the following day so the people *INVOLVED* in the con can do their jobs or you could follow what these other posters mention and that's stay that extra night (Thursday) to relax, get the costume ready and a night to go over your gameplan for the 4 day weekend.
I am still not in favor of Day 0 because why pay an extra rate for the room where you can use that rate money and have extra spendings for the con weekend. There is that one day which is Friday(weekday) to decide weather to prioritize that day and get things out of the way first such as school or work before a weekend of excitement or FML and try to talk your way out of it.

Hey, Day zero was technically instigated on both sides [ Fans & staff ] so its nothing to get excited about.  :)

Fanime Staff actually encourages [withing sanity's reasoning] to come to the Convention for Events open to everyone [that may or may not require a badge] - pick up your badge and enjoy anything that we have the ability to open up.

Why else would events and things like Swap meet,  Stage Zero, table top/E-gaming, and possibly even things like Dance or Video rooms might be up and running?

It's down the individual's choice if they want to room [or some cases beat the rush from being out of town, state, or even country] to drive/ fly in and avoid the crowds, the ease of checking in early is worth the cost of an extra night.

now I understand that students, of all ages [and for a fact those who need to graduate] should keep in mind of what their "priorities" should be- with that said, I doubt that Fanime Staff will disperse people who want to hang out at a convention just because its a day early and we're already giving out badges and holding events.

To each is own, but you really be encouraging people having fun [ withing reason ] instead of telling people not to come a day early because they want to. Otherwise why would staff start giving out badges on Thursday evening?

:) thanks for the info but i've had my fanime planned out for months now.  i'm going on thursday specifically to "bother" the "people *INVOLVED* in the con doing their jobs," specifically Jerry.  then i can get my badge early and not have to worry about the crazy friday lines.

Day Zero game room is the best game room, as there are no lines and annoying jackasses who breath their fanboy stink down your back cause you're playing when they aren't.

Mod Edit: don't swear...
User Edit: Show me the rule that says I can't.

Yes, the reason why I want to go to Day 0 is so I can get my badge early to avoid Friday crowds. ;D

Also so I can relieve some of my excitement and start relaxing and having fun. :3 Also since it'll be my first time going, I'll wanna know where everything is. :D So I wanna take a look around so I don't get so lost the next day, when the con actually starts. ^^;

is this guy even part of the staff?  really dude... don't speak for the staff.  they do soooo much for us, you don't get to just dictate the con attendees and change up the rules.

Day 0 is a legit day, lots of stuff happen.  Why would you want to eliminate a day of fanime anyways?  usually people want to ADD days... militarily speaking, Normandy was invaded on "day 0" (pretty much the same thing as d-day, since the day after is d-1, just as friday is day 1, unless my history is incorrect) so lets let the staff tell us what to do... and if you wanna argue about it, find me on Thursday hanging out in the con  ;)

Why do attendees attend Day Zero when this day is only for the following:
People who pre-reg want their badges early
    Staffers
    Dealers
    Press
    Guest relations
    Security
    People involved in Swap Meet
The actual day the con starts is Friday morning around 10 AM, Can an attendee hold till then... Day Zero should only pertain to the list above and I still say that Attendees should follow con tradition and start the fun Friday going into Monday.
There should be a rule change about attendees at day zero because the true events don't start till days 1, 2, 3, 4

you know what, forget my last post.  nervagent, just don't come on thursday.  and don't be so concerned with the fact that people come on thursday.  your con traditions may dictate that you must not come until friday, but mine dictate that i go thursday.

again i think staff is perfectly fine with people coming in for "productive" reasons on Day Zero.

its the staff themselves that set up extra early and have things like - Video, [Pre reg only] badge pick up, Stage Zero, Gaming and even a few extra surprises for all those able to properly able to attend:
[we dont encourage playing hooky from work, school, exams, responsibilities etc]

At this point, I plan on coming for Day Zero, and even that, I'll probably only come long enough to get our badges and get my bearings and then go home. I figure I'll have plenty of convention time Friday to Monday, and I'll probably need Thursday to make sure everything is in order.

I'll be cosplaying an uncosplayed person. XD

I plan on getting our hotel room in order and wandering the concourse while my group leader gets out badges. It's rather relaxing to see the area with only a hundred or so people scattered about.

Day 0 rocks cause you get a huge chunk of line waiting out of the way. By far registration has the largest line in the con and to wait all while con events are going around you really drives up your anxiousness and makes you impatient. When you're at Day 0 pretty much there's nothing really huge going on so you can just snag your badge and just relax with con attendees.

Also you're not considering the people who fly or drive long distances. If people want to experience Day 1 right from the get-go they're either going to have to catch super early flights or leave their homes at super early hours and then wait in the long registration line.

Even leaving very early in the morning isn't enough for some of us - if I make it to Fanime this year, I'm going to have to leave my house at 5:00 am on Thursday morning to get there in time for dinner on Thursday and give me some time to relax.

OMG... I accidently did that once for a science convention in the same building. The ballroom was completely empty save for the janitor and I thought "my... what a horrible turnout!"

This'll be my first time going to day zero. I want to hang out with the other pre-regs. ;)
