Title: You think that the protesters will return next year. (2010)
Post by: G.I.R on May 28, 2009, 12:35:23 PM
If I make it next year, and they show up, I want to have a sign that says:
Jesus Christ

It's a lion!

I want to bring a giant screen that shows a picture of an empty sidewalk and put it up so it blocks the view of the bus stop from the convention center.

And yeah, they'll probably be back.

Of course they'll be back, you peeps give them so much attention to feed their narcissism.  :D

Someone should print this sign though.

Just ignore them and they'll go away.

There was a nice suggestion about putting "do not feed the trolls (bears)" on the handouts that they give you. It might help a bit but then again...people just like bugging the crap out of them.

They're fun to fuck with and it's hilarious to watch people feed the trolls. I, personally, hope they come back since I find it entertaining. Feel sorry for the Rovers though and I hope the whole protest/counter-protest thing never becomes violent.

They more or less will return. I wouldn't be surprised if they did. But I heard that they got arrested and were banned from coming around during any anime cons in the future?

They were not arrested or banned to my knowledge.

The police presence on Saturday was there to break up the crowds because they were blocking the sidewalk, and that was it.

Now what were they protesting exactly?I wanted to go down and try to talk with on eof them but by the time we got downstairs they were gone... :(

Do they not like anime in general or is it Yaoi/Yuri? I mean... there has to be something specific.

They aren't really protesting.  It's just that you provide them an audience.

It was their idea of proselytism.  They saw themselves as witnessing to us, albeit in a fire-and-brimstone manner.

Depends.  What have you got?

From what I saw in the videos, they claim to know that everyone is a sinner, and God hates everyone for one reason or another.
They seemed more interested in preaching hate and intolerance than anything else.  The Videos are worth watching to see "Bull-horn Guy" turn several shades of purple.

My friend growled at them once, they didn't have a retort.  :P

OK..here's the most ridiculous plan I've heard that might just work.

First we need a bunch of REALLY calm people who will not respond when they are verbally attacked.  We need those people to be willing to give up their Saturday morning inside the con.  Last we need some people to volunteer to bring them food / water and to sit in for them if they need to use the bathroom or what not.

Early Saturday morning, before the "witnesses" show up, these people (in cosplay or not) need to just fill up the little island that the "witnesses" like to use, and I mean COMPLETELY fill it in, no room for the "witnesses" to push in.  Sing songs, do dances, have a cosplay gathering, have a picnic.  Whatever.  Just be there, be peaceful and be filling the space before the jerks can take it over.

The "witnesses" can be there and yell at us all because it is a public place, so we have just as much right to be there.  It'll be hard for them to find another place to "witness" that will interupt the convention and not get them in trouble for blocking the sidewalk. Nearest I can figure they'd have to go to the park and "witness" to the guy chasing squirels (if you were at the Naruto picnic you know who I mean).

The thing we have to be careful of is that we do not say or do anything to provoke the "witnesses" when they arrive.   If they demand that the people on the island move, simply answer "no".  If they do anything physical to try to make people move simply call the police and report it...not shove back.   If we did something like this to cut them off at the knees we would HAVE to maintain a moral and legal higher ground...that's why we need well behaved and calmly reacting people on the island.

I don't know...just an idea.   Peaceful solutions are so much better than yelling and getting angry at the religiously underdeveloped "witnesses" every year.  At least in my mind.

I honestly think we should just put them down as some sort of alternative gathering...  and yeah idk why they seem to think preaching hate is any less sacriligous then whatever con-goers are doing.
Talked to a Christian cosplayer who said the protestors gave religious people a bad name, how's that for irony?

In their minds, it's okay if they're doing it if it's in service to the Lord.  They seem to take their witnessing philosophy more from "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" and less from the Bible.

They wouldn't be the only one.  There's probably a fair number of con-goers who are Christian and found those guys to be an embarrassment.

They'll be back I am certain of it. Until one of them (or unlikely but possible us) steps over the line and it turns ugly. Hopefully that will never happen but given the history of religious fanatics in general the chances of violence are high.

On a lighter note does anyone have a picture of when the Rossiu is holding the "It's ok. I am from the Government and I am here to help" sign with them. That was me and I didn't get any pictures of it unfortunately.

I had the same problem where I wanted to talk to them but they were never around when I could. I'm a Christian and I witness to my friends just by being kind and answering their questions when asked. I find it to be a major turn off seeing the "protesters" at Fanime. If I weren't a Christian, I'd be against it by them constantly showing up and telling us we're going to hell. Aren't there other groups they can go preach to?? Seriously. I understand what they're trying to do, but they're going about it all wrong. I'd love to talk to their pastor or whatever from a cosplaying Christian standpoint.

In Christian terms, it's spreading the gospel of Christ (from "bearing witness").  It's another term for proselytism.

Unfortunately, these guys are doing it wrong.

They're giving Christians a bad image, my friend who was with me is a very devoted Christian and said it was horribly wrong for them to be spewing such non-scene.

She was going to beat the crap out of them but I was able to pull her away from them before she could do anything.

We were having a treat over at the bakery next to the Fairmont when they were walking over on Monday.  Everyone had the same comment, "You're kidding me!"  then we shook our heads and continued eating our chocolate.

I feel bad for the guy standing far off from the protesters with prayer cards. I met him a few times and he was very nice. He had a yellow shirt, and would just wave and say "Jesus loves you." Or just hold out the prayer card he had. He had a totally different demeanor then the other "Christians" right smack out front of the con. People who saw him after the protesters sort of ran him over. O_o But he was there, quietly standing to the side.

To be honest, this is getting quite old. I'd prefer the quiet nice Christian standing on the corner, handing out cards, and pretty much minding his business, rather the the 'Turn to Jesus or Burn in Hell' "Christians". They're giving Christians a bad name, I personally feel offended by this and extremely disapointed. They aren't witnessing, they're disrupting the congoers and upsetting others.

I may not be the best or most devoted Christian, but I am Christian nonetheless. The bible teaches us not to condem or judge others "lest ye be judged."
I don't want to see this next year, or any year after. The jokes were funny last year.

I saw him! He was really nice. My dad thought he was a protester though. We walked right past him and he was there smiling and everything and didn't bother our gathering at all.

It's my theory that they just show up at the San Jose Convention Center every weekend if there's an event going on just to rouse attention. Next week, protesting men in funny fez hats! (because fez hats are made by the devil! *le gasp*) Guys like these will take any event that have many people congregating and they'll do whatever. I've been attending the Rose Parade in Pasadena and it's the same group, same signs, etc.

No surprise that they'll be back again next year. *shrug*

Yet, I'm more concerned about having a great time at Fanime (maid cafe can has reservations this time?) in 2010 than anything else.

There was a person or two claiming that some of them got arrested for slapping someone in the military with a bible, but I haven't heard anything about this, so unless someone has some first-hand information on it, I'm filing it under the rumor-mill-gone-wild.

Aye, I wanted to say it too, but I knew they wouldn't listen. I'm sure they've heard it all before from countless other people who have approached them. They are already set in their ways. They believe they are doing God's work. I say just ignore them. That's what'll tick them off more in the end. They want the attention.

If anyone wants to rick roll them epicly, can someone help me carry these to the front @ Fc(Fanine-Con, Not Further-Confusion, FANNIME-CON!):
-A High Cap. Battery Backup (ones used for computer)
-An 5.1(Min) Amp Speaker System
-5 Speakers
-1 Subwoofer
-Mp3 with "never gonna give you up" downloaded into it?

We'll Also need some people with camcorders, and ect.

Can't do that.  It violates noise ordinances.  On Saturday the police came by to tell us to have one person turn down the music they were playing on a nifty belt-mounted speaker.

That would be really rude to the members having gatherings and photoshoots at the fountains.  We can't control the witnesses and how they affect the members, but we can control what we do.

Can't do that.  It violates noise ordinances.  On Saturday the police came by to tell us to have one person turn down the music they were playing on a nifty belt-mounted speaker.
But it's okay for the Zealots to use their bullhorn?

I'm not a lawyer or a police officer, nor do I have the time or inclination to go through SJ noise ordinances at this time, so I can't answer that question.  I will look up information later on to see if I can provide clearer guidance on the issue.

I can say that the police told us to have a congoer turn down the music they were playing on their speaker, so I would highly discourage any attempts to play excessively loud music outside.  Not only has law enforcement been seen to disapprove of this behavior, but it is inconsiderate to those trying to hold activities at the convention center entrance, as BrightHeart76 noted.

Okay, from a quick run through, here's what I've come up with.

Again, I am not in legal affairs, so do not take any of this as legal counsel.  It's merely a contribution to a forum discussion.

We are assuming that the preachers do not have a permit for their bullhorn.  However, seeing as how the SJPD is well aware of their activities and recurring presence, as well as their possession and use of a bullhorn, if there were a legal issue, I trust the police to have acted upon it as they did when the sidewalks became blocked.

However, if there is an opportunity to confirm the legality of their bullhorn with the SJPD, I will inquire about it.

The issue of whether the preachers are a 'disturbance' is debatable.  To use they are a disturbance.  But to the SJPD, they are fully within their constitutional rights in their behavior.

Playing loud music in an attempt to drown out someone exercising first amendment rights is different.  You are not promoting any political or religious speech in that case.  You are simply trying to silence another person's speech.  Also, as members and attendees, you are representing Fanimecon.  The police have enough to deal with in handling one group of loud people.  If we can help out by having our members turn down their noise amplifying devices, or not forming a crowd, it will help us maintain good relations with the SJPD.

I do not know the reason why, but on Monday there was no bullhorn present. They were just yelling out loudly.

Good for us if that's the case.

Something to double-check/follow up with the SJPD on.

I was not at your 09 convention to witness the witnessers...is that a word? I don't think so, but I digress. I was not there to hear the protestations being issued forth upon the masses. Nay! I sayith unto thee!  I, your most humblest of servants (actually I'm quite evil by nature) have a suggestion.

This is The Flying Spaghetti Monster
(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpitchersandpoets.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F08%2Fflying-spaghetti-monster.jpg&hash=8bfe7db1455b802b0daee6082dde249df8b026e4)

He or she (I honestly can't tell which) is the one true noodly pasta goodness god! Below is a graph showing the global temperature Vs. the number of pirates. What this has to do with his or her pastaness I haven't a clue because I was too lazy to read the text. I think Pirates might really like spaghetti but I could be wrong.

I further point out the following:

The Pastafarian "belief of heaven" contains a beer volcano and a stripper factory.Hell is similar, except that the beer is stale, and the strippers have STDs.

Now for my conclusion, if there be any!

 1. There is a god literally made of spaghetti! Yummy Spaghetti!

2. The pasta deity likes pirates, or the other way around. Perhaps it may be a mutual fondness.

3. Heaven contains a BEER volcano and a STRIPPER factory! What's not to like about that?

I say unto to you now, here, and possibly in the future tense that Fanimecon adopt The Flying Spaghetti Monster as it's own religion and or possibly it's mascot. Think about it. Do you like spaghetti? Fancy a pirate (I know some of you must)? The Volcano filled with beer and stripper factory admittedly might be going a bit too far for an anime convention so we could make that purely optional. Sure this will possibly anger the religious protesters, but as I hinted earlier, I am evil by my very nature.

I take my leave of you now filled with hunger for pasta, a need for a cold one, and a naughty girl dressed as a pirate.

Beer Me!

Why beer is better than Christianity:

10. No one will kill you for not drinking Beer.
9. Beer doesn't tell you how to have sex.
8. Beer has never caused a major war.
7. They don't force Beer on minors who can't think for themselves.
6. When you have a Beer, you don't knock on people's doors trying to give it away.
5. Nobody's ever been burned at the stake, hanged, or tortured for his brand of Beer.
4. You don't have to wait more than 2000 years for a second Beer.
3. There are laws saying Beer labels can't lie to you.
2. You can prove you have a Beer.
1. If you've devoted your life to Beer, there are groups to help you stop.

I was actually hoping to have a Counter-Protestor group going on on Sunday against them.  Dress like Jesus-Freaks (I am Christian so I use that term to describe the uber-ratical ones), wear fanny packs with "Jebus lubs uz!" shirts and stand with signs on the opposite side of the protestors to protest back.  Not sure what my group of friends are doing on that day, but this was just an idea I had (Having gone 2 years not seen counter-protestors).  Who would be interested is my only question.

The current idea is to ignore them. From what I heard, the SJ Police informed us that that group does that for every large event at the SJCC. Basically, those protestors want your attention. By providing that to them, they win and we make their trip and time worthwhile. Consider them Fanime's trolls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)). Everyone should know... do not feed the trolls (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/What_is_a_troll%3F#Not_feeding_the_trolls). :-\

Once that changes, then we have a problem.

the point is not to get them to shut up but for YOU not to get involved. If you don't engage them, the "discussion" won't have any opportunity to escalate to something that will take SJCC and fanime resources away from where they may be needed.

if there is any potential for conflict or even if you are merely blocking traffic, rovers and SJPD need to be there. That's one less rover to stop people from cutting in front of you in the reg line or any line for that matter, to stop that shoplifter in the dealers room, to call and direct medical personnel to an emergency on the concourse, and to keep that creepy glomper off the cute cosplayer wearing too little....

Any of those people could be you. Rovers and SJPD are here to help you. Although, I don't think TC_X0_Lt_0X (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php?action=profile;u=7741) or G.I.R (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1568) look appealing in anything particularly reveling.....

Well, I don't mind the protesters. This year I found them exceedingly easy to ignore. I was outside for a fair amount of time on that day and they didn't get too loud, they let me pass when I wanted to get by them, and they didn't lash out or strike me, so I really couldn't care less about them. I have to admit, I found their signs to be rather entertaining, but otherwise they're like a big semi-solid roadblock. A minor hinderance that otherwise serves no purpose.

What would be funny if somebody stood out there with a HUGE sign that dwarfed the one the protesters carry. So all attention would be on the person joking around. I think would truly annoy those attention whores.

I'd do it if I felt I had the time.

Stranger yet, the protesters troll the Shark Tank also.  I remember seeing them at a conference I went to in 2006.  They protested a Christian conference.    ::)

so after reading the numerous posts that indicate so, not a single one of them impressed upon you that FanimeCon would prefer that you leave them alone?

Well considering they have been there the last what, three years that I have been there. I guess they will be back, UNLESS they finally have given up. HA that will be the day lol.
Oh man, last year (2009) one of my friends REALLY got into it with one, I think the protester was running out of ideas on what to say. SHe was SO at a loss of words. Whilst my friend was still going strong using the protesters facts against her. Ah a battle of wits.

One of them made this little old crossplayer cry here though T^T.

BUT You can't blame them for spreading their beliefs. That is what they believe in (WHAT EVER they are protesting -.- homosexuality, anime, or whatev) and they are sticking to it. Hey you know what, no matter how mean and vicious some of them can be, I respect them lol. It takes a LOT for that kinda commitment lol

i know right? hahahahaha. I mean even if you hate them and they make you cry at least give them props, I expect thats what they want lol.

WHAT exactly are they protesting? O.O does anyone know? I mean is it anime in general, is it that they have some odd assumption that there is lewd conduct going on in there? (I guess there is some. Fanime is pretty tight about that stuff though).
I mean its not like that bad, there is no like lustful or nasty debauchery there except yaoi and hentai nights hahahahaha.

Lulz.
As long as he is entertaining I am fine with him doing it, though Con Staff will probably not like it.

They actually just go and protest at any Convention or otherwise Large gathering of people. I'm actually quite sure that it not so much as what they are at doing the protesting, but rather just protesting for the sake to be heard. I can't speak for them but I can imagine they want to be heard by the public in general and the best way to get heard is at a large gathering of people. Weather they think Anime is bad or not is really probably a minor thing in there book. After all, almost everybody is a sinner in there books I can imagine. =3

hey, I'm a sinner, and I am proud of it. lol I am damned I guess you could say. From the words of Billy Joel "I'd rather laugh with the sinners, than cry with the saints; the sinners are much more fun" Right?

I can guarantee you that none of them are perfect saints either lol. I think it's fun to torture them. I mean in a non violent sort of way of course. I have always wondered is the guy who cosplays Jesus one of them? Or does he just mess with them? I never go that XP lol

I have a weird idea I've been toying with for a while, and if the Jesus cosplayer reads this, then here's the suggestion I have.

Next Fanime, I'm planning to dress up as Hercule from Dragonball Z, and maybe come out with my own bullhorn, imitating the character's voice and talk about how Jesus and Mr. Satan want them to leave. And then have the con-goers start chanting, "JESUS AND SATAN! JESUS AND SATAN!"

Either that, or dress up like the devil and hand out candy and Pocky to everyone. Which idea sounds better?

Again, Fanime Staff request that you leave them ALONE. We spoke to the Jesus cosplayer and he agreed and complied.
