As it is still relatively close to the end of con and heads/staff are still reading this, I would just like to throw this out there:

I would love to help out with printing/creating the mini-schedule for next year and/or maintaining S2M (staff to member) information on Twitter, Facebook, forum, mailing lists, etc. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience with html/web editing to help out with the main page announcements, but if I did I would definitely help out with that, too.

My impetus for this stems from the fact that I, too, am frustrated by the "holes" in information between all of the sites, and want to improve on them so that others don't end up missing a bit of information on a page they don't check.

Again, just throwing this out there and seeing if it'll stick. An email address to whoever might be involved with either the pocket schedule or site maintenance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure how many people do GKs (or other figure-making) here, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to reinforce a figure onto a stand.

The longer story: I bought a finished GK off of eBay before I knew about good vs. bad quality materials/casts. The figure itself looks fine, gorgeous even (http://www.e2046.com/product/8073) but the resin/whatever it was cast out of was heavy and brittle. As you can see from the picture, the only point of contact between the figure and the stand is a tiny part of the "wire", where there is a tab that is supposed to fit into the side of her leg. Unfortunately, because of the cheapness of the cast, the tab and the slot were different sizes and Rei would wobble and then sloooowly tilt downwards until she would fall off the stand completely. I tried reinforcing the connection using pins and epoxy and the resin was so brittle that the tab actually broke from the weight of the figure.

What I would like to know is what I can use or do to 1. Make her stay upright on her stand and 2. Still look as good/detached from the stand as possible. I know I could use multiple pins to connect her to the stand/other wires but am concerned it would affect the look of the figure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I would hate to have to scrap her since there is nothing else particularly wrong with her and despite the cheap material she has a very decent paint job.

This is my second year selling at swap meet, and last year I noticed that most of the people I dealt with were reluctant to haggle or simply didn't know how. I'm really hoping to sell most or all of my stuff this year so -- how would/did you get people to haggle with you? Would a sign work for most people or did you just judge on a case-by-case basis? I initially set my prices at a high but still fair rate in order to have good haggle room, but instead that seemed to have scared people away -- would setting prices lower help or just give buyers an excuse to lowball?

Both buyers and sellers can reply -- I'd appreciate both sides' opinions!

I'd like to suggest having a page on the Fanime homepage detailing all of the staff and volunteer positions (available or not). The staff signup and open positions pages are down for most of the year so they're not very helpful to people who might decide in the middle of December that they would like to volunteer, and contact information isn't easy to find unless if they sign up for the forums. Regardless, I think that having one page with brief summaries of each job would help facilitate the heads and the volunteers, so that there aren't millions of "what can I volunteer for?" and "who do I contact for x dept?" questions every year.

I am even volunteering myself to this page, as long as I am able to access descriptions or talk to heads about their departments in order to do an adequate writeup. There would be no need to update the page as long as no positions are significantly altered or removed, so there's no need to dedicate someone to page upkeep.

I just want to throw http://www.convention-roommates.com/ out there, a forum that helps people find roommates for any and all conventions that happen in the US and Canada. While I know there is a dedicated thread to that on this and most other con forums, I'd just like to point it out as a viable option, especially as it includes pretty much every large and mid-size con out there and can give everyone a broader range of roommates to choose from. I myself plan to use it in the future when I go to out-of-area cons, so I hope you guys will also find it useful for your rooming needs.

If anyone knows of other people who do not browse the Fanime forums but come from out of the area or out-of-state, please pass this on to them as well.

I've been debating the pros and cons of buying vs. making your own cosplay with friends of mine and I wanted to get some feedback from people who really do cosplay, whether it be made from scratch or completely bought.

Would you ever buy cosplay? Why or why not? How much would you pay for a good ready-to-wear costume (as opposed to commissioned)?

If there were any parts of a costume that you would much rather buy than make yourself, what would it be? Ex: shoes, accessories, props.

If you make your own cosplay, why do you prefer making it over buying it? It might be an obvious answer to you, but I'm genuinely curious.

Why is there such a stigma on eBay ready-made costumes? Is it because everyone uses the same photo and there's no good indication of the actual product, or is it because they're usually from China and China = cheap and bad?


Personally, I have no talent for sewing and I do have a few pre-made costumes in my closet, which I would wear more often to cons if I had the complete set of accessories (wigs and shoes to name a few). I can understand the sense of achievement and pride when ones handiwork is praised, but if someone can't sew, is the next best thing for them to buy a costume, or to just not cosplay at all?

The San Francisco Int'l Asian American Film Festival is coming to SJ from 3/19-3/21! We have a nice lineup of films this year in SJ, from the Japanese 'Dear Doctor' to the Chinese 'The Message'. We are screening a variety of films ranging from narrative to documentary to shorts. Join us this year for another spectacular festival in the South Bay! I'm looking for some suggestions of anime to watch in my spare time. What are some of the top underrated, unknown, or otherwise unpopular anime that you've ever seen? Given those parameters, I'm excluding cult anime such as Lain, Elfen Lied, or anything from Gainax; anything that is simply old but not necessarily underrated such as Bubblegum Crisis or Macross; and anything that just tries a little too hard to be esoteric, like Texhnolyze.

What I am looking for are anime in the vein of Paranoia Agent, Boogiepop Phantom, or even The Girl Who Leaped Through Time. They don't have to be depressing, but I would prefer them to have a coherent plot that sees itself through to the end, good storytelling, little-to-no gimmicks, and sympathetic or at least identifiable characters.

And... go?
