Title: Lateral Thinking Puzzles
Post by: Jun-Watarase on November 27, 2007, 06:27:09 PM
A lateral thinking puzzle is basically a cross between a puzzle, and story-telling. I'll type a scenario, but I won't give the whole story. What you're supposed to do is ask "yes" or "no" questions to gain clues to solve the rest of the story.

Though, I should warn you that most of these puzzles are morbid and unlikely-- but they're still realistic. I won't give any answer other than "yes", "no", or "doesn't matter". They'll all be honest answers, but I won't promise that they can't be misleading. If you can solve it with the information you have, go for it and type what you think the answer is. When at least 5 people want to give up, I'll ask if you want me to give you the answer.

EDIT: If you've done the current puzzle, before, don't spoil the answer to those who haven't.
EDIT II: You can ask as many questions as you want at a time.

I'm going to start off with the easiest scenario I can think of, and see if you guys are interested in playing. Here goes.

A man is lying dead on the floor. The room he's in is locked from the inside. Beneath him is a pool of blood and water. How did he die?

Example question and answer: Was the room empty? Yes.

Anyways, this puzzle is the most basic one I know, so I can't give you any hints. You guys are almost there-- that's all I can say. Remember, to answer the puzzle (if you think you know the answer) is type your interpretation of the scenario. Good luck!

Yeah, you got it. I could've been a smartass and just answered "yes" because of the question at the end, but there's no point in doing that. When you recite the answer, don't ask questions. State it as what you think the answer is.

The man stabbed himself with a shard of ice in a locked room. The ice melted, which explains the blood and water around him. Good job, Castor!

Here's the next puzzle-- slightly harder, but the solution is satisfying for most people. Good luck!

A man visits a bar, asking for a glass of water from the bartender. Suddenly, the bartender takes out a gun and holds it to the man's head. The man thanks the bartender, and walks out satisfied. Why?

So the man walks into the bar to get a glass of water for his hiccups. But instead the bartender aims his shotgun at him.(because he's a crazy bartender?) The scare from this cures the hiccups. So the man is happy that he no longer needs water and walks away. correct?

You got it! Congrats.

Here's the one me and Pyron were playing around with.

A ship gets shipwrecked on a deserted island. It's a small ship of maybe 10 or so people. After about a month, a rescue ship arrives and a lone survivor is brought home. He's asked if there was anything he wanted and he cheerfully said, "I would like to eat a seagull sandwich one more time."

They make him his sandwich and he eats it and returns home. The next morning he's found dead in his room, suicide. Why did he kill himself?

Remember, you can ask as many questions as you want at a time.

Here's an extra puzzle, but the difference is... instead of asking a question, give me an answer as to why. You can try as many times as you want.

A man is wearing all black. Black shoes, socks, pants, jacket, gloves and ski mask. He walks down a back street with all the street lights off. A car, painted black, goes towards him with its light turned off. It somehow manages to stop in time. How did the driver see the man?

A man lives on the 15th floor of an apartment building in New York.  Every morning he wakes up, excercises, eats his breakfast, showers and gets ready for work.  Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and walks to work, 3 blocks away.  After a long days work he walks 3 blocks back home to his apartment building.  The man goes to the elevator in the lobby and presses the button to go up.  If it is a nice day and he is alone on the elevator he rides it to the 6th floor and walks up the remaining floors.  If it was a rainy day or he is not alone on the elevator he rides the elevator to the 15th floor.  Why?

Oh! The man is short (dang must be REALLY short) and can't reach the buttons beyond the 6th floor button so on rainy days uses his umbrella to push the button to his (the 15th) floor.  On nice days, he can only push the 6th floor button (unless a tall person gets on the elevator with him) so he has to walk the stairs the rest of the way.

So Fredric used an anthem to trick Brad into confessing to something?

Yes. I'll accept all your attempts so far as an answer.

Answer: "Brad" is a German spy during World War II. Fredrick, an American, is suspicious of him, so he plays a word-association game with him. When Fredrick says, "The land of the free," Brad says, "The home of the brave." When Fredrick says, "The terror of flight," Brad says, "The gloom of the grave." Any U.S. citizen would know the first verse of the national anthem, but only a spy would have memorized the third.

Where both drinks poisoned?

Did one man not drink his drink?

Yes. No.

did one man drink only part of his drink?

Next Puzzle: Two men are served identical drinks at a bar. One lives, but the other dies. Why?

I'm so confused by all the posts, it doesn't help that I have a cold and taking drugs ... I might as well hazard a guess:

Although both drinks were poisoned, the man who died actually choked on a piece of ice in the drink, not from the poison.

All answers... are in the puzzle itself, for your questions. No, Yes, No. Identical drinks.

Did the men know the drinks were poisoned?

Nope.

Did one man have the antidote in his mouth?

Ohh, interesting! But no.

I'm not sure if this was asked before?  Was the poison in the ice cube?  And if so did the dead man take longer to drink his drink so the ice melted and released the poison?  (probably completely random...but worth a try)

Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is Bob and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a construction worker, a taxi driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?

Was she an acrobat?

Was she on the Trapeze?

Not sure which one's you're referring to, but... no one's an acrobat, and it was already confirmed that the people in the first puzzle are trapeze artists, so yes.

Answer to the first puzzle: First puzzle became too complicated. I actually said in a previous post that I'd "scrub" this one, but since people were still asking questions, it went on... Since we changed things and made them trapeze artists, the man who blew the kiss was hanging by his feet. The woman was holding her end with her mouth, but when she said "I love you", she had let go and died from the fall. It makes less sense that they're trapeze artists, since no one really holds onto the rope/bars with their teeth, and there's normally a net underneath, but I figure that... no one would really think that they were simply holding onto ropes.

Anyways, since you guys got the hint, here's another for the remaining puzzle.

Big Hint: What does a new pair of shoes change for a person?

Oh! The man is a knife thrower and the woman was the person he was throwing knives at. Since her new shoes made her taller, he threw the knife into her head instead of above it.

is that it?

No no, she asked a question. That isn't enough to actually solve a puzzle. She'd actually have to conclude with an answer with the answers to her questions as clues. By confirming an answer, she'd have to make a guess and actually say, "Okay. Here's what I think it is. They were in a hospital, and she knew her husband was dead because he was under life-support, and by the power-outage, she knew that the hospital's back up generator shut down and killed him."

LOL, was it Theodore Roosevelt? :V

If so, here's my guess: The speech had aided him by protecting him from a bullet shot by an assassin. The speech was folded up tightly and prevented the bullet from giving him a lethal wound. If it's not that, I don't understand how a speech could protect someone physically.

Because he had every intention of killing President Garfield. He borrowed the money to buy a gun and attempted to kill him once prior to the actual time he shot him. His "obsession" would have been that he believed that "God" wanted him to kill the president.

This case is important by "Case Law" standards because it was on of the first cases tried with the "Insanity" defense where Guiteau believed he was insane at the time of the shooting, but was not "medically" or "professionally" insane with which he hoped to get off. Ironic note... It took a lawyer to think of it. Guiteau was a lawyer.

So it wasn't necessarily "rage" but a planned assassination of President James Garfield. That's why I ruled him out.

Just a heads up, but continue on with it if you like. Lateral thinking puzzles aren't about "Guess who these people are!"-- they're actually puzzles that pertain vague scenarios, and people asking Yes or No questions, answered with either "Yes" or "No". The key thing about including scenarios is that the people trying to solve said puzzles are supposed to figure out the reasons how and why the scenarios occurred. At this point, these aren't lateral thinking puzzles, rather than a guessing game of who people are based on actual events. Refer to the opening post or past puzzles to see what I mean.

The answer is Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy. There are some super interesting facts on the two of them so take the time to google it and find out some of them. All in all it was way too uncanny the about of similarities of these two men. Their passion/obsession was civil rights and in the end they both died because of it.

So if there is anyone out there who would like to start a more Lateral Thinking puzzle out there now is the time to submit it here for everyone to play with ^^)

The husband was driving to the hospital, because the wife was about to have a baby. When they got there, he ran inside to get help, but she had the baby while he was inside, and died durring child birth.

i dont have a puzzle, so someone else can ask.

Lol, okay. Here's another type of lateral thinking puzzle, but instead of asking yes or no questions, try to find an immediate solution to the scenario. This means, try to come up with a solution in your post. It requires a little more thinking, but here's an easy one:

You're alone and have a task. You're in a room. All the walls are solid and opaque, and there are no windows within it whatsoever. No natural light can seep in without you opening the door. Whenever you enter or exit the room, you must close the door behind you.

There are three light bulbs in the room, but you're only allowed to turn on one each time you enter. How are you able to determine which switch goes to which light bulb if you're allowed only to leave and enter the room again once?

actually, i hadn't. the major clue was that the stranger was related to them. that gave me the idea of it being a child.

That's funny. This was my original train of thought when I asked the question because of another thread we were discussing at the time. But you got to the solution before me. So, good for you.

Jun, that one was harder than I thought. I even drew out a little diagram with switches to lightbulbs.  :P

But disregarding my convoluted diagram since you said it's easy, I'll say it has to do with the fact that lightbulbs also give out heat and not just light. I did have to make a few assumptions about your description because otherwise, why couldn't we just leave one light on the first time you enter the room? (unless that's actually the solution, in which case, I'm even more frustrated for working on that diagram!)

You said "you're only allowed to turn on one each time you enter", so I'm concluding you mean only one light can be on at any one time. That's the challenge. Trying to i.d. 3 lightbulbs and 3 switches, but only able to enter the room twice. If that's the case...

First time you enter the room, flip on switch #1 and let Lightbulb A heat up. Turn off. Leave room.

Come back fairly quickly. Flip switch #2 which lights up Lightbulb B. Run (or walk) to the lightbulbs. The still warm lightbulb should be Lightbulb A, matched with switch #1. And the last lightbulb that's not "on" and not "warm" would be for switch #3.

Am I close? Do I get chocolate???
