You might want to pin a copy of or link to this thread in the Hotels section of the forum as well.

I know a couple of people who were wondering about hotel registration and how it will work for press, panelists, artist alley folks, etc.  I'm sure you guys are already working on it, but just a reminder that it'd be good to have that ASAP with hotel reg day coming up soon. =)

General Convention Discussion / Re: State of the Con?
November 06, 2013, 07:24:15 PM
I believe anyone can attend the open parts of the staff meeting (it has to be public in order to give potential staffers an opportunity to participate) if you're interested in seeing what's been going on in the last few months.

I'll try and take some more detailed notes next meeting and ask some questions of departments to see if there's any relevant information that is available for public knowledge.  I know I've been closely following any updates regarding plans to fix registration, but it seems like most of it is internal fixes for the time being.  There's no staff meetings in December so the next big notice should be in January, so hopefully there should be some sort of major update then, otherwise I'll ask around.

Besides registration, what are some of the major topics that people are interested in?  I believe the cosplay masquerade was one point where people wanted to see improvement, and I know they were discussing some changes to address concerns about implementation regarding B/W Ball's dress code.  Anything else?

Definitely consider staffing!  Especially if you have some specific ideas you'd potentially like to see implemented.

More photos for people who are interested in checking it out.

Lots of great new photo/gathering locations for cosplayers and lots of event space.

Hotel and Facilities / Re: Parking?
September 21, 2013, 12:07:53 AM
If you park south of 280/680 most of the street parking doesn't require permits.  You'll be about 3+ blocks from the con center, but it's not too bad if you want to save money.

Might not want to leave any valuables in the car though.

Doing some research for a potential panel and wanted to get some people's feedback and experiences.

What do you think of the term "Trap"?  Is it good, bad, a harmless leftover of con culture?

Does terminology such as "trap" and other things such as the prevalence of crossplay affect the experience of transgender congoers for better, worse, or just make it different and how?

If it has an affect, how does it differ between FTM/DFAB, MTF/DMAB, and genderqueer identities?

If you are trans* or genderqueer, how has the atmosphere at anime cons affected you over the years?

Also if you have any writings/studies/etc. on the issue I'd love to read them.

To me the word "trap" comes from the internet in form of a joke where a male dresses up as a female in order to attract other males for romantic purposes. But in real life I would not call any crossdress/crossplayer a trap, that would be making fun if them. Unless that was part of a joke.

In all my years of going to various cons I never heard the term "trap" to describe some with out it being a joke. I also have never seen any one purposely trying to be a trap either. Unless it was part of a joke.

My old room mates are crossplayers and they don't think of themselves as traps. They don't do it on order to fool anyone. As they told me they do it for the challenge and there is 10x more selections to cosplay than male cosplays.

As for its affects on transgender people, I honestly don't know. In the world of cosplay it really does not matter.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

I was wondering if you might be willing to elaborate on your last sentence.

Thank you for the commentary.  :)

Has anyone else regularly heard the term 'trap' as a slang substitute for 'jailbait'?  Out of curiosity.

I believe you are correct about the origins on the internet, specifically with Admiral Ackbar saying "It's a trap".

Anecdotal speaking I mostly see it used at anime conventions, somewhat at gaming conventions, and less so at comic conventions.

Would be interesting to see how prevalent it is across the spectrum though.

What I'm particularly interested in how this terminology affects the trans* MTF experience at cons.

This would actually work.  We've been trying to find a way to do a Halo group that would fit in to Fanime and we were trying to do something Red Vs Blue themed for next year, which would work.  It'll likely be more RvB than Haloid themed, but it still fits since he animates those folks as well.

I'll get a headcount of halo folks as it gets closer to the con.

Can east bay people who don't mind commuting join D:?

That's fine.  We have a couple people all the way up in Martinez that are in the group.

For ease of planning and consistency, events, gatherings, etc. will be geared toward the Santa Clara county region, but anyone is welcome to join regardless of where they call home, their skill level, etc.

$250 Persona machine.

I have Persona 4 Golden as Persona 3 Portable on it.

Zander Brandt (who was on the prop making panels with me) expressed an interest in organizing prop makers in the south bay for meetups, gatherings, etc.  So to that end we've created a FB group for people to meet up and socialize on!

https://www.facebook.com/groups/356304284493004/

This is geared toward people local to the south bay (~San Jose region).  Costumers, propmakers, cosplayers of all skill levels (beginner or professional) and all fields (sculptors, industrial desginers, effects artists, seamstresses, etc.) are welcome.  So join us and say hi!

Here is the powerpoint presentation for the Pepakura panel held at Fanime 2013.  I have updated the slides so that they will be more useful to people who did not attend the panel.  If you download the file there are presenter's notes as well.

I may try and get together with Zander/Eric and record a version of the panel for those who could not attend.

EVA foam and props panels will be coming soon.

If I was allowed to complete my staffing hours prior to fanime stuffing badges for mailing I would much rather do that than work for 24 hours during the con.

Just saying...if you're worried about manpower, there's a reason some people prefer staffing departments that do most of their work pre/post con.

As others have mentioned, I would study other cons that do mail badges and see how they deal with similar issues.

I'll add Fossshape to the list of items to look up and research. =)  Definitely keep the input coming in. ^_^  Already excited for next year.
