If you are going to have an accident after 76 years of incident-free motoring, you might as well do it in style - though that was the last thing on Jack Higgs's mind as he hurtled towards two Porsches.
# Motorist takes a spin round shopping centre

The 93-year-old, who had received not so much as a parking ticket since he began driving at 17, caused £60,000 worth of damage to the two sports cars after losing control of his Ford Fiesta.

The Fiesta lies on its roof after colliding with two Porsches

Mr Higgs, a retired Pentecostal minister, was parking next to a Porsche showroom when his car shot backwards.

First, his 13-year-old hatchback hit a gleaming red Carrera II which acted as a ramp, causing Mr Higgs's car to flip over on to a silver Porsche 911 parked alongside.

Staff in the showroom ran outside to be confronted by a scene of wreckage and Mr Higgs hanging upside down by his seatbelt in his overturned car.

Dave Coombs, a dealer at the showroom in Penarth, near Cardiff, said on Monday: "It was amazing. We could hardly believe our eyes at the damage.

"He managed to get himself free and walked out without a scratch. But the Porsches were a real mess.

"There was glass and bits of broken metal everywhere, but Jack is such a gentleman he asked for a sweeping brush to help clear them up.

"But we walked him to his home for a cup of sweet tea while the breakdown trucks arrived to tow away the cars.

"I'm not too concerned about the cars - what matters is that Jack survived which is incredible considering his great age."

The widower is well-known to staff at the garage, RS Porsche, because he lives next door.

He is allowed to drive across the forecourt to reach his garage almost every day - something he has been doing for the last 45 years without any hitches.

He cannot explain how he managed to lose control of his car and smash into the pristine Porsches on this occasion.

One of the cars was a write-off while the other was badly damaged and will need extensive repairs.

Both cars were privately owned and were in the garage for servicing. The cost of Mr Higgs's first accident in 76 years was put at £60,000 - which will be met by his insurance company.

His blue Fiesta, worth £600, was also a write-off but it will not matter because the pensioner has decided to quit the roads.

Mr Higgs, who has driven more than half-a-million miles in his lifetime, said on Monday: "I can't understand it, nothing like this has happened to me before.

"I've been driving since I was 17, have a clean licence and have never even picked up so much as a parking ticket.

"I just don't know what happened except that I lost control as I was reversing and suddenly I had hit the cars.

"The next thing I knew I was hanging upside down in my car thanking my lucky stars I was still alive."

Mr Higgs was given the all-clear after being checked over by paramedics.

He added: "It was a miracle I got out alive and I put it down to the power of prayer and God looking after me.

"But that's it - the end of my driving career, I'm never driving again. I'll have to get lifts or go on the bus in future."

I was surfing nicovideo.jp for more amusing videos from the bored Tekken players of Japan... and I found one. :)

I had another Tekken player upload it to youtube.  It's pretty funny to watch. It's a first to 1 game wins match for a haircut. (Law and Anna cosplay in the video as well. ;) )

Came across an interesting article about reading what someone wants based on their physical features:

How a man can tell from the eyes which girl wants a one-night stand
By FIONA MACRAE - More by this author » Last updated at 10:42am on 9th April 2008

It is one of the main questions on an amorous young man's mind - how can you tell whether a girl might be interested in a one-night stand without having to waste precious time in small talk?

Similarly, an eligible young lady might be keen to know whether the chap chatting her up is the type who's ready to settle down and raise a family.

It turns out that the answers have been staring them in the face.

A study suggests that we can judge a person's attitudes towards relationships simply by studying his or her features.

Men looking for a quick dalliance should set their sights on the doe-eyed look typified by actresses Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci.

And women on the hunt for a husband should give macho types such as Bruce Willis the cold shoulder and instead seek out men with the soft features of Leonardo DiCaprio, according to a team from Durham University.

The researchers asked 700 men and women how they felt about one-night stands.

The volunteers were then asked to judge the attitude of others to casual sex from passport-style photographs and rate their attractiveness.

Up to 72 per cent correctly identified others' attitudes towards sex more than half the time, the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour reports.

The study also showed that men find women who are interested in casual sex attractive, while women are drawn towards less promiscuous types.

Interestingly, this held true even when the volunteers couldn't work out the person's attitudes towards relationships.

Researcher Dr Lynda Boothroyd said: "Even although the men couldn't always tell which women were more strongly interested in short-term sex, they were very strongly attracted to the women who were.

"The women were very strongly attracted to the guys who were interested in commitment."

Macho men with square jaws, prominent noses and small eyes were seen as being more open to casual sex than males with softer features.

"The perfect feminine features in a women are big eyes and a smallish jaw," said Dr Boothroyd.

"Lindsay Lohan, Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci have these."

It is thought the phenomenon has its roots deep in evolution, with men who sow their wild oats being more likely to pass on their genes to the next generation.

Women, on the other hand, gain little from being free with their favours and prefer stable types who will provide for them and their children.

Co-researcher Dr Ben Jones, of the University of Aberdeen, said: "Lots of studies have shown that people can judge a lot about a person from their face, including things like health and even some personality traits like introversion.

"But this really is the first study to show that people are also sensitive to subtle facial signals about the type of romantic relationships that others might enjoy."

Previous research by Dr Boothroyd has shown that women perceive macho types as being cold, domineering and unfaithful. In contrast, feminine-looking men are regarded as warm, caring and committed - and ideal father material.

Things in the Universe / Limits to self defense?
March 28, 2008, 12:22:08 PM
I grew up in Hayward and got picked on a bit in middle school, so this question has been in my head for a good 4 years now.  Last night I also saw some punk teenagers break a car's mirror while walking down the street in my home neighborhood, which is why this post has become necessary.

To what degree can you assault someone depending on the situation in self defense?  By this I mean legally and can be easily defended as such if charges were to arise against me.

The only clear cut situation that I ever get an answer on is if they break into your house, you're free to kill them as it's a forceful entry and anyone who forces their way into your house can be seen as hostile.

Then the more gray areas come up.  What if someone is breaking into your car and you walk out with a bat/ crowbar/ gun and they see you and run at you?  Do they have to hit you first or can you proceed to beat them up/ shoot them until you can keep them in check without any further beating.

If someone throws a punch or 2 at you but you're not strong enough to simply restrain them, can you say break a limb or beat the hell out of one of their joints so that you can restrain them?  If they're still unable to be controlled can you proceed to attempt to damage/ break more limbs or even kill them if the situation is dangerous enough?

I'm not a violent person by any means but I grow more concerned as I seem to be surrounded by more and more aggressive/ hostile individuals.  I know you're SUPPOSED to just let someone who's stealing your car take it and call the cops, blah blah blah.  But that's my damn car and the likelihood of the thieves being caught by just calling the cops has been very slim from all of the car theft stories I come across in car forums.

Sorry, but I need to get that spam out of the tournament thread.

For all of those who think that making people pay for tournaments illegal, and all of those who want to voice their opinion on the subject, post here.

According to the US federal law, gambling is legal in the US but is under the discretion of each state.

According to California state law, as of 1999, it is explicitly stated that competitions of "sport, skill, power or endurance" don't constitute a "contest".  The definition of a "contest" or "sweepstake" in the article are what are allowed.

Also looking around the same page/ article that was linked in the tournament thread, there is actually no explicit statement against a tournament with entrance fees that is a competition of "sport, skill, power, or endurance".

Explicitly within the California law, it only refers to gambling games of the sort that require chance of a degree as illegal.  This is the genre of poker, bingo, and slot machines.  Essentially "casino" games.  These games within California must be for charity causes, non-profit, or cleared by the state to be held.

By the definition I got from wikipedia (don't give me that wikipedia isn't reliable BS, it's just a definition), gambling is, however, defined as placing any money on a given event with unknown outcomes with the general goal of making more money.  There's nothing in the definition about gambling being a bet on random chance.

By this definition, yes tournament entrance fees are gambling.   They are, however, not explicitly planned in the wording of California gambling laws.  It only states that tournaments of "sport, skill, power and endurance" don't constitute a competition/ sweepstakes.

Given all of this information, make your decision if tournament fees are illegal.  Even if they are illegal, however, should we care?  I grew up entering tournaments, be it for magic cards or DDR or Tekken, and I'm pretty sure that nobody ever considers a tournament with entrance fees as gambling.  All of the tournaments I've entered had tangible.

DON'T POST IN THE TOURNAMENT THREAD ANYMORE ABOUT THIS SUBJECT.

Gaming / Official E-Gaming Tournament list/ rules
February 27, 2008, 12:16:37 AM
Hi everyone, this thread is the official list of all official tournaments that E-gaming will be holding.
I'll be the coordinator for these tournaments.  :)
-As of right now all tournaments are going to be console.
-If circumstances deem necessary, I may talk to the owner of the arcade machines to allow us to use them for tournament use.  No guarantee on this.
-All tournaments will be standard double elimination.
-You may bring your own controllers, but no programmed/ shoulder buttons allowed.  We will provide regular controllers otherwise. (Disclaimer: All controllers owned and used by Fanime attendants are not the liability of Fanime nor its staff.  If your controllers break while in use at fanime, we're not held liable.)
-All tournaments will be bracketed using standard tournament brackets and seeding.
-Pausing during a match will forfeit you 1 game, even if it's on accident.
-Certain glitches will be banned from these tournaments. Clarification of which glitches will be stated per game.
-If you are not present when called for your match you will forfeit 1 game if we have to do a different match.  If you are not present after the replacement match you will forfeit that match.
-If you are entered in more than 1 tournament that are active simultaneously, we will not penalize you if you're currently completing a match in a different E-gaming tournament.  You will be notified that your match has been called and expected to attend your match immediately after your current match has been finished.
-If you accidentally pick the wrong character (for fighting games) you may restart to pick the correct character.  You are expected to IMMEDIATELY state that you picked the wrong character.
-For fighting games, the winner of a game must stick to their character for the following game.  Loser may change character.
-If a player wants to keep their character for the match secret, to avoid counter-picking, they may tell the tournament coordinator their character(s).  The coordinator will pick these character(s) after the other player picks theirs.  If both players opt for this choice, the coordinator will input the characters for both players.
This list will be subject to change if new official rules are found and more games will be added as rules are finalized.
