A lot of people stopped to talk to me or come into our base and ask how to join SOS/Rover staff!
If you guys are interested, you should sign up =p. You can contact me for info!
Haha, maybe once I turn 18. (:
Come on, it's hard work but hecka fun. And....I need people newer than me for next year so I don't seem so bad.
Maybe, if it's possible for me to be on Reg and SOS even if I'd only be 17.
Otherwise, I'd probably end up just asking SOS base if they need help at those odd hours. (:
I'm thinking about it, though a year is between us so I have quite a bit of time to really decide.

You know my email, i'm pretty much always sitting at the computer.
sounds intersting. i had fun voluntering this year and i ran into a guy i knew on sos and had fun hanging out with him. i would be defintly willing to do it excpecally at the odd night hours (im a night guy)
stupid question?
Since I want to manage my hours, how many hours total as SOS/Staff?
Like all staff positions, it's 24 hours. Sometimes, the SoS leads will allow for less hours if there's appropriate coverage in all situations. The shifts are usually assigned in 6-8 hour increments per day with a few breaks in between.
Since there's a good chance we will exceed 90 SoS staff for 2009, you probably may do somewhere under 24 hours, depending on when you're scheduled.
On second thought, there's also a good chance I may end up switching departments for 2009, but I'll know more about that as staff gets their gears revved up for the year.
Once more specifics/details are posted regarding SOS/Rovers, I'll make my decision.
However, do not assume 24 hours can be done on thursday and not show up on friday/saturday/sunday.
Seriously, if you have committed to working for SOS/Rovers, do your shifts through Friday/Saturday/Sunday. If you want to work extra shifts and hours (Like I love to do) then feel free...but don't leave us screwed certain days cause you decided you were done for the weekend.
Just something we have talked about...
Hm, do you have to be 18 to staff? o_o Next year I was thinking on becoming a staff, along with my friend who staffed this year. (she's 21..) But I am going to be 16 by the time fanime comes again >_> is it possible to get a staff position if a person is a bit underage?
Safety On Site is generally 18 or older because of the duties that are expected from the staff.
But a lot of other departments are willing to take people who are under 18 too(ex. Reg, Volunteers, Press, E-Gaming, Asian Films, etc.). I say just wait until the staff meetings for 2009 are scheduled and then you can go and talk to a person in charge of the department that you're interested in joining and they'll take it from there. As long as you're around 14-15 or older, you're usually in luck.
HA! Me as SOS...that would be hillarious. Teacher Voice only goes so far. I can just imagine me trying to reason with some fool dressed as a samurai "Now was that a good choice? I'm sure you didn't mean to cut thru the whole line .. and ... wait ... wait ... WAIT ... ah damn another one walked away. Hey! Put that finger away Samurai-boy!"
Much respect to those able to do the job well! You all rock!

The rules for SOS have changed this year from last year.
True story.
So my fiance was SOS this last year and wants me to do SOS with him in 09 instead of registration. I was wondering if there's anyway I could do registration and then do SOS? Like work mornings/afternoons with reg and afternoon/nights for SOS? If so that'd be great, cause we always need help in reg
Yes.

Did you ladies have an unofficial question or comment?
And yes, we appreciate your eager-ness to help us out. but you are about 10 months early, unless you WANT to work the next convention some of us are working at.
Random questions to you ladies though. Why or what is your interest in SoS/Rovers? Why the sudden interest in staff?

Well, I was wondering if people who are under the age of 18 can be staff since I am turning 16 this coming winter. I know I want to help out my favorite con!
I am interested because it seemed like it would be fun! :D I really love this con so I am considering helping out the best I can at Fanime 09. My friends were staffing this year too. Other staffs were really friendly D:...
So I wanted to really help out Fanime next year. ^_^

And to think that I'll be 18 near exactly 1 month after fanime =(
If I can't get in as a rover for '09, then I'll have to wait tell '10.
*Sigh*
For the most part (being and HR monkey) ...
*** disclaimer: only opinions of Me and NO ONE ELSE ***
being under 18 has ALOT of legal issues even if this is a "voluntary" basis and what not...
Also because of the 'nature' of the job dealing with safety issues and possible handling tense/potentially hazardous situations we CANT be mixing you 'younglings' into anything hostile.
heh. As if Fanime ISNT hostile in general. ;)
I think something 'safer' such as Reg staff or general volunteers would also be a good place to start. As much as I'd hate to turn away new helper buddies in SOS we just have the follow the rules just like almost everyone else.
til then, just keep growing up.
Heck, I know i still am. :D
An example.
If your doing I.D. Checks for Hentai and Yaoi...you not being 18 is...well...ironic. Can't have that. =)
I recall that in the past, Rovers used to be very understaffed. For that reason, the previous head allowed for a few exceptions on staff with basic things like line/crowd control and concourse roving because it's frustrating when you're looking for enthusiastic manpower on your team who meet all your requirements, but you have to turn them away simply because they lack that one thing you need. Manpower was an issue for Rovers/Safety back then, but judging by the SoS staff numbers for 2008, it seems those days may be finally over.
But this is my own logical analysis of the situation so please don't take it as fact.
IMO, I think Jerry's and Stevie's opinions probably describe best why Safety was/should be 18+.
Yet at the same time, I honestly don't think there's such a thing as "overstaffed" for departments like Safety or Reg.

Ah, then I guess people who are under 18 has to wait xD Well then if I can't staff then I shall do volunteer and still help out ^^ Even if it's just helping a little since it's only volunteering :3
Go and enjoy the Con, heck your still young. :D
No need to rush and grow up.
Or just be friends with a staff member and 'hang out' with us while we work.
Believe me it helps pass the time on a 8to10 hour shift.
Or come out and join us sometime for a gathering ( in the hang out, meet ups, sections) or just randomly start up conversations/threads of your own.
Woot.
Yea. It's also like I said earlier. Although some departments like Safety, ConOps, Tech, etc. have to be limited to 18+ for duty-related reasons, there are a lot of other departments that are willing to take minors. They'll probably announce their openings as the general meetings rev up and you can pick an area to work in. Safety is just 1 out of a gajillion other con departments so the opportunities are endless.
Volunteering also helps too if you want to enjoy more of the con because they require less hours than a staff position.
I was a volunteer before I was on staff. I enjoyed it so much that I decided that I wanted to staff. I honestly feel that the experience prepared me for what's in store for me on staff so I'm actually glad I did it.

Steve.Young is out PaRtYing like its 2009 in LA for Anime LA. This weekend. Assuming he wont get himself thrown into jail for partying with Rock Stars and getting them tipsy and speaking mumble-nese in hotel room suites. He should be back and partially sober come monday morning... er afternoon-ish. ;)

Or e-mail
[email protected] or

or just say hello to any of us at the next Fanime Staff meeting. (or parties knowing the Rovers this year :P)
oh, and for the record, I dont think we verify age via another board member.
We'd prolly need to see some ID's
you ladies and gents do have ID's dont you? :)
All staff as sign in (with Con Ops or any Department before recieving your Staff badge) requires proof of age and hence you will need a valid ID.
most people usually do have some sort of official ID right? because before at reg pick up (for pre reg at least) they usually needed a card/reciept and a government issued id. o-o
I'm actually at the hotel right now in L.A.
You can email Rovers @ Fanime.com or Steve @ Fanime.com

If I was harsh to certain staff members, it is because their conduct was unbecoming. And I have never said that I disapprove of the con, or its programs.
Yes sir

xD Well it isn't. I mean, the ballroom doesn't really look like a ballroom. xP
Isn't this what a ballroom looks like?

Last time I checked, Fanime didn't call it 'ballroom dancing'; they called it a "Black & White Ball".

I believe that Eric was inferring that you were insulting the dance lessons and the dance instructors, not the location. When people say ballroom dancing, they tend to refer to the genre of dancing rather than actual location. So when you said that, I was a bit offended on behalf of my B&WBall staff as well as for myself since I have taught ballroom dance.
Ballroom dancing does not need to take place in a ballroom like you have linked. All you really need is a spacious dance floor, the music, and the people.
I hope that clears things up and we can stop getting this thread off-topic.

so I figured it would be you, Bald mike and big mike
unless Steve counts, but I'd picture Steve as the Robot Riding the 3 headed Hydra. :P
and then I'd see Eric, holding onto some type of chain being dragged from behind...
holding a huge basket of Curlies. ... O_O whatever the heck those are.
BWHAHAHAHAHA! Can we get an artists rendition of that?! :P Lord knows I'd pay for it to!
Oh. I see the e-mail now. It was hiding. D:
Gmail and its weird message nesting. xP

GYAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!
THE BARBARIAN RETURNS!!!
Yay Zog!
Whatsup! I want to know if there are any positions still available for rover, since I don't think I'll be able to be part of the maid cafe this year. I'm pretty much past 18.

Pretty much? um the policy per Con Ops says you have to be 18, by the date of the Con.
We should be having another meeting soon. I think on March 15th.
Yo Steve.Young or other Rover's head(s) ! could you pass a PM to the newbie and give them the details where/when to meet?
You should be getting some info [eventually] for your interests. Thanks!
Hi I pmed already, but I figured that this would ensure that I got whatever info was available since all of you experienced people seem to be lurking on the forums. I'm 19 so the age restriction is a non-issue, but I was wondering if it's too late to join SOS? And what kind of time commitment I'd be making? I don't mind spending 6-8 hours a day working at con especially if it's grave yard or early morning, but I'd like to have an idea of what I'm getting myself into.
Hi, I was just wondering if there is still room for another "rover". I'm interested in becoming a staff this year at Fanime and I just got the journal on dA saying that there are still spots open for staff and volunteers.
please send an email to
[email protected]
I hope everyone is reliable this year.... last year I ended up working at all the peak hours and working when other people 'couldn't be found'.....
It was great fun working so much ^_____^
Yea, I hope so too. But this training program we implemented as well as all the documented records make it hard to pick up a staff badge and not work your assigned shifts.
we have enough details on all our staff this year, and u guys should review the data AFTER fanime to basically say yes or no on the return for 2010.
lets just hope we keep the complaints down about rovers in on going years. :P
Hey Steve,
wanna lock this one and open up 2k10?
In before lock!
