Title: 2015 Cosplay "HELP Me..." thread
Post by: BSaphire on April 14, 2013, 06:56:56 PM
~ So you want to cosplay and you aren't sure who or which character?
~ Maybe your stuck on how to sew a part of your cosplay?
~ Your no good at props/wigs/costume so where can you buy it?
~ How about what kind of pattern could help you create that piece?
~ Of course there are always the:
"Where/What kind of makeup?"
"Looking for this or that wig?"
"Where can I get it?"
"Contact lenses and what do you think?"

These questions and thousands of others are always being asked. Well here is the perfect one stop shop thread for you to post those questions and where other cospeeps can offer their help to solve those many cosplaying dilemmas that go into each project we choose. Sometimes it is just choosing that stops us from cosplaying and those questions are ok too! :)

Post your questions here and include links to photos of the subject if possible.

Much love to all cospeeps!

Title: Finding a Photographer?
Post by: Chasing Shadows on April 24, 2013, 06:05:28 AM
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it, but I thought it might be a good area to start.

Last year I saw many different cosplayers meeting up with Photographers to do private shoots. I have a costume I've worked on for a long time and would love to find someone to take really nice pictures of it. Are there photographers on these forums who set up appointments? Is it something you just hope you get lucky with at the convention? Or should I check elsewhere for this and if so, where?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

I've talked to photographers at cons before and they are usually completely booked for said con. You need to scour forums and such to find photographers and set up an appointment for a shoot at the con. Try posting a want ad in this forum category or contacting some of the photographers who posted a topic in 2012. You could also try posting on a site like this (http://cosplay.com). Hope this helps!

If you want to set up a formal shoot with someone, so it's a guaranteed thing, follow PinkHairedSasuke's advice.

However, if you can't find a photog who has room in their schedule for you, you can still get nice photos! I've had photogs pull me aside for an impromptu shoot before, but that's not really a sure thing, and if you hang out in areas where photogs tend to gather, you can get some really nice shots that are technically "hall shots," but look more professional. Photos like this (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3218842/), this (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3218831/), and this (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3352849/) are all "hall shots," and shots like this (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3060040/) and this (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3029920/) are from impromptu shoots. (I've never actually done a -scheduled- shoot before -- everything you see in my gallery is either a "hall shot" or from an impromptu shoot. The one where I'm next to the ocean was actually at Yaoicon 2011, and is a "hall" shot)

So if worst comes to worst and you can't get a scheduled shoot, see if you can grab a photog or if a photog will grab you, and you can still get some nice shots. Just hang out in a location that is relatively attractive near a lot of photogs, and be sure to ask for emails/websites/business cards/etc. so you can be sure to get your photos after the con. (I'm really bad at asking, and I never find maybe 90% of the photos taken of me -- eep!)

Some photogs will pull people aside for just a few minutes (maybe 5-10), so they can fit a lot of people in, and some will do more intensive impromptu shoots (the longest I've had was maybe 30 minutes?), but typically, it will just be a somewhat out-of-the-way location (the backside of the hotel the con was at [SacAnime] and across the street from the con [Fanime], respectively, for the two I posted, but I've also had the "go to the backside of the wall" type shoots), for just a few minutes and a few poses. You won't get as many pics or as nice of locations as with a scheduled shoot, and it isn't a guarantee that you'll get a shoot, but you can always try asking a photog if they are willing to do another pose or two, if they don't ask first. It's not a -terrible- option, and hoping to do an impromptu shoot is really the worst-case scenario here. :)

Good luck, and I hope you can get some good pictures! :)

my wig arrived with a wig stand, but I have no clue what to do. I want to try it on but I feel like I'll  mess it up if I open it and try it on now, and then when it comes time for the convention the wig might be messed up- but I'm just assuming that. do I have to leave it on the wig stand after I wear it once? tips on wig care in general?

my wig is for Mika Harima from Durarara!! btw

I'm assuming your wig is already styled in the fashion of Mika. If you bought it directly like that then I would highly recommend trying it on and seeing how it looks in comparison to the character's hair so you can see if it satisfies you. If it doesn't, then you might need to do some styling. There are numerous ways to style a wig, everyone has their own methods. I personally use Moco De Gorilla hair gel. By using that, my Sasuke Uchiha wig has remained in Sasuke status since Fanime last year. I use it because it's strong and able to be washed out with ease for restyling. To answer your main question, unless your wig is flimsily styled, it should be fine if you try it on. I would out it back on the wig stand after trying it on also. Mannequin head I assume?

Now, with wig care, there are also many methods for preservation. Cosplay specific quality wigs I use mannequin heads to hold them, these are usually easily purchasable from stores that sell wigs or costume stores; local stores too. Another thing that can be done, this is what my friend Amanda does with her wig she uses for Rocky Horror, is put the wig in a well ventilated shoe box. She's had that wig for over a year and she stores it that way and it still looks brand new. That method was told to her by the lady she purchased the wig from. Another thing that I do for lower quality wigs, like Halloween ones and things like that, is put them in a plastic bag like the ones from Target and stores of the nature. I then hang the bag from a hanger and store them in a well ventilated area such as an open closet.

Hope this helps you! If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

hi, I'm cosplaying prince komali from the legend of zelda: wind waker. he looks like this http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081017021233/zelda/images/c/ce/Prince_Komali_Normal.png

I've made a beak out of clay, but I'm unsure how to secure it to my face. I've seen others suggest spirit gum, but I don't think it's viscous/strong enough to hold on something that large. do you guys have any suggestions?

Spirit gum would be good to use for that. Another thing you can try is using eyelash glue, it tends to be pretty easy to apply.

Eyelash glue wouldn't be nearly strong enough for that. @_____@;; Try Spirit gum. Be sure to do a test run or two before the con so you are sure that it won't fall off.

That I'm not sure of, my friend is more the expert on eyelash glue strength.

That's not a bad idea at all. I personally would've done paper mache to begin with.

It really depends on how strong of an eyelash glue you use actually. Some can be pretty strong and long lasting. But yes, test runs must be done.

Doing a quick google search for costume shops in San Jose, I found two that look like they have makeup:
http://www.natashasattic.com/
http://www.victoriasdancecostume.com/
I'm sure there are more, but I only spent about a minute looking this up. ;) Pretty much any costume shop that serves the theatrical community (rather than strictly a Halloween-type costume shop) or meant for more serious costumers should have the theatrical makeup that you need. I'm not sure what brand or colors you are looking at, but you can always call ahead of time to make sure that they have what you need, and hopefully anyone who works there will be helpful and knowledgable enough to give you tips.

At my local costume shop (I'm up in Sacto, otherwise I'd point you to this one, though it is at the corner of Madison and Fair Oaks, across from Beverly's, if anyone is in that area and needs some emergency makeup), I was able to ask for advice from the (somewhat unhelpful -- good thing I did a lot of research beforehand) employee and get a container of troll grey light grey Aquacolor and deep purple Ben Nye, both of which should last me for MANY wears of the two costumes I need these for, and a bottle of Mehron Barrier Spray, for about $20, which is a huge savings over what that would cost online with shipping. I can't speak to how much it costs at whatever costume shops are in San Jose, but the prices of the items themselves were comparable to online stores, and I didn't have to pay or wait for shipping. :)

Otherwise, what kind of skin paint are you doing? Do you know which type you need (creme, water-based, alcohol-based, airbrush, pax, etc.)? I can point you to some tutorials and some comparisons of different types, if you don't know what you need. I went with two different types (creme and water-base) because I was doing two different applications -- the creme is for some stenciled tattoos, which would require something less wet, and the water-base is to cover my entire face and neck, since I tend towards oily skin and was wary of creme because of that.

Oh, yes. the obligatory "SEAL YOUR PAINT" statement. I almost forgot. Depending on the type, you'll probably have to powder it and use a sealing spray on it.

Wow, thanks for all the advice Nina!

I am going to be cosplaying Marshall Lee from Adventure Time and I ended up visiting Natasha's Attic and picking up some powder and some grey Ben Nye creme. I'll primarily be using it for my arms, face, neck, upper chest and ankles. I too have slightly oily skin but the person who helped me said I can just use the regular face scrub and the powder and it should be fine.

I was on the fence about the sealing spray but should I go back and get some?

@PinkHairSasuke thankyou for the advice! forgive me for replying so late. I do not have a mannequin head but I think the stand I have will suffice for the con :) I just thought of carrying he stand and the wig to the con as a hassle, so I may try the ventilated shoebox trick.

I'm glad you found what you were looking for!

For your ankles, can you wear grey tights of thin socks? I know that a lot of Homestucks use tights for their legs, and I'm planning on wearing tights for my own HS troll cosplay (it's a leotard, so my upper thighs will show), but I'm not sure if just the ankles will pose much of a problem in terms as rubbing off on your clothes and on other objects. (upper thighs, obviously, would have the potential to rub off on chairs and such)

Get the sealing spray. Seriously. People say that you can use hairspray, but you should use at least -something- to really properly seal it. The powder helps hold it to your skin, and then the spray helps hold the powder in place, so there will be MUCH less chance of rub-off on yourself and others, and you really don't want to be that person with unsealed paint.

Go to an eye doctor. Contacts don't just have corrective power in the prescription, but a base curve, as well, so you want to make sure that your base curve matches that of the contacts. You can also get advice on how to properly insert/remove them and how to care of them. this is your vision -- be sure to take care of it!

Also, some people have medical reasons why they can't wear contacts (I'm one of those people), and you might not know it until you ask an eye doctor about it, and you don't want to try to wear contacts when you really shouldn't be.

Hey, this is my first time cosplaying ever - I'm going as Dawn from Pokemon (http://i.imgur.com/d0CKSKp.png (http://i.imgur.com/d0CKSKp.png)) and I just have a question about her clips. I plan on using craft foam on hairclips, but I want to know what can I do to give it a smooth, shiny, plastic look? Is there a specific type of paint for that? I was also wondering how well does craft foam flex and bend, since I'm using the hair clips that you snap open and close (like this: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=413963&catid=183396 (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=413963&catid=183396)).

Hi, all.  First time cosplayer here.

I purchased a wig that is in the style of Tezuka Kunimitsu from Prince of Tennis, but when I try it on it just doesn't look right.  Not anime-ish enough.  I'll probably need to style it with product, yet I don't wanna mess it up.  Is there anyone that would be willing to help me style it if I bought the proper hair product?  Would just need a few minutes of your time say Saturday morning?

Thanks in advance.

You sure you don't want to just make them? They're apparently very cheap and easy to make (probably would take less than an hour to do).

Use craft foam sheets and this pattern:
http://s106.photobucket.com/user/dbz120/media/cos_chi1.jpg.html

Then glue it to a headband, and you're done! They end up looking pretty good for being so cheap, but if you want it to have a shine to it, mod podge the foam (or use a similar gloss coat) and it'll look more plastic-y.

I have met a predicament wih my Mika Harima wig: the bangs are longer than what I was expecting- and when I say long, I mean LONG. The back and sides of the wig are great, but the front is not. Anyone willing to cut and style the bangs for me, preferably someone with previous experience? I can't exactly go to a barber now or tmrw; I leave for Fanime afterschool.

Hello, everyone! I wish I could help you out with your cosplay questions, but alas, I'm simply a novice at cosplay construction myself! So if anyone is willing to help me out of my complete and utter bafflement at crafting a dream-cosplay of mine, they would have my undying gratitude. <3

For years, I've always wanted to cosplay Aigis from Persona 3 (and other games). Here's a reference shot (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120507112041/megamitensei/images/0/01/Aigis_render.png)!

I have a decent knowledge of sewing, but finding and knowing how to put the materials for the golden parts, arm pieces, and headband seem to be something I could use some advice on. The white torso piece is another thing, as well. The silver notches on it are beyond me, aha. I'm pretty hopeless!

Does anyone have any experience about what kind of material I should look for that will be durable and (preferably) not too pricey?

I have a very long extensive list of what I want to cosplay but not really sure which ones would be the best. I'm really short about 4'11 and really petite/skinny. So whenever I do cosplay I usually get called the lollicon or chibi ver. of said character. I'm open to any suggestions of cosplay unless it is really really really really....I mean REALLLY revealing. I mean I did Juliet Starling and it wasn't that bad. I think I'll lay off bunny suits until I'm of legal age.

Cosplays I have done:
Haruhi Suzumiya
Yuri Nakamura
Noel Vermillion
Naruto Uzumaki
Shippuden Naruto Uzumaki
Kenny from South Park
Sasuke Uchiha
Kakashi Hatake
Sailor Moon
Juliet Starling
Itachi Uchiha
Hatsune Miku
Misty

Find out if the last organizer is still active on the forums. If so, message them and ask if they're okay with you taking over the gathering. If they aren't active, then the gathering is free to be started.

If you want to go off of height and such, I'd recommend doing Konohamaru from Naruto or Chopper from One Piece. Also, one of the Cutie Mark Crusaders from My Little Pony would work too. I've also seen that WWE Diva AJ Lee has become quite a popular cosplay due to her outfits and the fact that she's a huge anime and video game fan. All of these are just off the top of my head haha

Title: Bioshock Songbird? What do?
Post by: pandamonium on June 02, 2013, 12:40:36 PM
I may be going crazy, but last night I decided I'd take on the daunting task of cosplaying Songbird. Obviously not to scale. What would you all suggest I use to be the rigid structure of the mask (I'll be covering it with fabric)? What about the skeleton of the wings? What could I use that could include joints so I can open and close them? I'll definitely need help with the LEDs in the eyes, too.

Title: Sword and Wings help
Post by: AndurilWielder on June 03, 2013, 12:54:20 PM
I tried making another post about this but I cannot see it. I figured there might be a time delay or lag, but hasn't popped up yet. Weird.

Since I don't want to type the whole thing up again right now I'll just say I'm looking for a convenient and feasible way to make a 5 ft sword, and wings. Materials, construction method, cost, etc. Any sort of advice anyone can give will be appreciated.

Yes I know the con only ended last week, but I expect my cosplay for fanime 2014 could take all year to make.

Cheapest route would be paper mache' since its gonna be covered, you can also block it out in foam if you want something lighter.
IMHO your biggest problem for the mask is going to be the placement of the eyes and the material covering them. I made a mask similar to that and it is NOT fun to wear at all because I can only see *maybe* 10-20% of normal and since they are on the side of my face it drove me crazy.

If you make a slot to see out of in the neck it might help with that but you would have hide it.

The costume looks like it would be very very heavy, especially if you are planning on adding joints for the wings and making a leather suit.
PVC pipes *could* work for the wings, but you would have to be careful about the weight of all the fabric your putting on them and all the stress

if you live local send me a PM and I can help you gather materials for cheap

I have a medium short blue wig which I used for Juvia cosplay (from Fairytail).  btw, it's the Fairytail version when she wears the wave designed outfit.
Does anyone have any idea who else I can do with that type of wig?

I was wondering if anyone could help give me advice on how to make a (relatively, at least) light weapon or two for my cosplay.

I thought maybe a little pcb pipe with styrofoam, but what would I encase it in, something easy to encase it in at least - that's not cardboard or aluminum foil.

For the rod part of your weapon, might I suggest a wooden rod. And If I'm assuming correctly about what you mean by encase, I think paperclay would be your best bet. It is notable for being very lightweight and is great for smoothing things out. After you apply and dry, be sure to sand it.

Hope I helped you out a bit.

I've never worked with it myself but I think paperclay might get a bit pricy for trying to cover a large weapon. As an alternative you might consider paper mache or plaster gauze (also called plaster cloth). Of course paper mache is the cheapest option but the plaster gauze I find to be reasonably priced even for use on a large project. The gauze are a bit cleaner, sturdier, and easier to work with then regular paper mache in my opinion. For any place that you need to build up on top of the pole (be it pvc or wooden) and foam structure you can shape and tape newspaper. The plaster or mache would stick better to a wooden pole over pvc but if you must use pvc you might try covering it in a layer of dry newspaper first and then wrap over that. Of course be sure to reinforce well at the joints where pvc/wood meets foam and sand the casing down after it drys. I would also probably do at least 2 layers. I might suggest experimenting with both the mache/plaster and paperclay to see what works best with the other materials you are using. You might find the type of foam you have makes one work better then the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to each; for example, the mache/plaster might be too fragile or the peperclay might chip or crack. This is why I always like to test things as much as possible before I put them on my actual project.

I once used paperclay to make a sword, it was my first prop and ended up a two-handed sword (oops) so much bigger than the rapier I intended. I spent about $80 in materials, so yes it can be pricey. However, before I made the sword I made a much smaller fish by covering a piece of balsa wood with it, sanded, painted and sealed. I then threw the fish down the (carpeted) stairs in my house to test durability. It took four throws before it got a very small crack on one edge. It is also very very light. And takes three days or more to dry completely, depending on how thick it is. Just adding my two cents, I'm not sure why more people don't use paperclay, other than it isn't as cheap as some alternatives.

I have an awesome idea for a prop and I'm looking for a beat up airsoft (full auto electric) to cannabalize for parts. Any one out there know where I can get a decent one for hopefully under $30. It wouldn't have to be pretty. I just need the clip, barrell, and firing mech to be in good working order.

Paperclay is a pretty common material that people use often, but it is only suitable for certain things. Smaller objects and more compact objects are best in paperclay, as it does not work as well over large areas or in very thin applications.
(For example -- I stupidly decided to make my double (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/51001724495) trident (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/51773182268) out of paperclay over a wire and foil armature, and it was not only a huge pain to get to stay in that shape over such a large area, but it was too delicate for the task and kept cracking. You can see in the pictures of my finished prop, I have duct tape on the bottom trident, which is the only thing holding it together. However, paperclay worked wonderfully for my fishhammer (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3218842/), even though I had to cover a bit of surface area [it is spread over a stiff, hollow cone], since it is compact, though I did have a difficult time getting the back fin to stabilize.)

Plus, besides cracking and possibly breaking when using over a large area, it can get -really- heavy when using a lot of it, and it doesn't support its own weight very well, requiring extra support.

For a large sword, I'd carve it out of pink insulation foam/XPS (extruded polystyrene foam) and seal that in lightweight spackle (you know, the stuff used to patch walls -- the lightweight kind is the texture of a very finely whipped buttercream and adds practically zero weight, though on my two props made of XPS, I did a thin layer of regular spackle first, which probably helps seal it a little better, as the lightweight kind can be a tad crumbly). I didn't try spraypaint over the spackle, though I'm sure it would be okay, but I was able to use acrylic craft paint over it and spray on a clear coat with no issues. This is how I made my horns for both Ultimecia (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/51739919865) and The Condesce (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/51773182268). Both sets are very lightweight.

Paper mache is a good way to cover something, but very difficult to sand smooth. If you were to go that route, I'd look into using it as a base or a way to seal something, and then using spackle over the mache, since it is much more sandable and easier to get a very smooth look on.

dajoo> After a very quick search, it appears that you can get very cheap airsoft guns on Ebay. However, check with the con about your plans, as airsoft guns (even gutted) are not allowed to be carried. I'm not sure if you are planning on repurposing the interior parts for something else entirely or if you are planning on still using the outer shell, but be careful. :]

Hello, I agree on what you said about alice. Last year I attempted to make her "um" dress, (The picture you posted) and it didn't go too well.
The best way to pic out a cosplay for you is to think about which one you like the best. And when buying online, look at every single dress and prices. I personally think that the orginal blue and white dress is the easiest and best way to go.
Hope I helped.

If you are going for more of a gijinka look, (anthropomorphized) I would recommend anti pill fleece for the tails wings and spikes. It is fairly easy to sew by hand (if you don't have a machine), and is one of the easier fabrics to deal with. You can use some wire to help stiffen and hold the wings. For the eyes I would recommend a headband and you can attach painted half globes to them. I like to use those christmas globes that are plastic and come in two pieces so you can put stuff inside. All you have to do is cut or dremmel the hangy part from the top. Hope that helps.
Title: Re: Lugia cosplay?
Post by: luluuxduplica1223 on August 21, 2013, 09:58:16 AM
The idea above is great. Here are a bit more ideas to help. :)
To do gijinkas(as Dajoo described are human versions of pokemon), I'd recommend searching in google looking up 'Lugia Gijinka'. Most of the results could be a bit odd, but otherwise there are a few good ones that could be easily done. From what you said though, a shirt and shorts works fine. For the wings, I have two approaches that could work. First is to either buy or make a white hoodie and edit the sleeves to look like it. The other is to take white fleece(Anti-pill works best), and cut out the basic design, and add wire to make it bend like the pokemon's does.

For the spikes, if you go with the hoodie idea or simply use the t-shirt and get the right colored fleece and make rectangles and perhaps attach it to the back of the top you use.

For the eyes, theres an option of making a fleece hat, which is quite simple, and add on fleece to match the face. Or use your own face and add make up for the blue part. But thats usually less pleasant to some people. Or perhaps something else, but I'm missing it.

As for the tail, I recommend getting fleece and cutting out two long tail-shaped pieces, get a lot of stuffing, and some wire. sew the tail together, add the wire to shape it, and stuff it for  that tail-look.Then carefully safety pin it to your shorts or simply tie a ribbon around it to use as a belt to hold the tail up.

Sorry for it to be long. I host the pokemon gathering(for about 4 or so years now.), so I've had to make a lot of pokemon cosplay. :) Feel free to use what I gave you or you don't have to. Pokemon cosplay can be done in many different ways. Theres no right or wrong way to do them.

Hope I helped. Good luck!

For future reference this sort of topic should really be posted here:
http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,18226.0.html

Were it me, I would probably cut the shape for the wings out of foam (like the big foam fingers at sports games) and cover that in fabric. Wire can be a little tricky to work with especially on large or complex shapes. To give structure to the spikes you can use a heavy fusible interfacing (the type used for crafts) or even something as simple as sheets of craft foam, cardboard, or use stuffing. Remember, youtube tutorials are your friend! I would also suggest looking at lots of other cosplays for your character and see what you like about them it can really help give you ideas. Speaking from experience don't feel compelled to do things "by the book" on your first couple cosplays. I have some great props and accessories that I literally stapled and glued together for lack of sewing machine. And most importantly, have fun!  ;D

The first thing to remember is you want them to be 100% cotton. Artificial fibers don't dye easily / without the proper kind of dye.

Find a color that is close from Rit or similar dye water down or concentrate as needed to darken/lighten it. Teal from Rit should be close just water it down lightly.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good brands for an affordable wig (below $18) or is below $20 is an unreasonable expectation for a wig? Also if you were to dye a wig to make it the perfect color, would you use regular human hair coloring or fabric dye? Will that help a fakish looking wig appear more natural?

Thanks, any advice is appreciated :D

Baseball pants exist in pretty much every color in the rainbow, (i know this because i play softball, and ive seen some weird designs).

Colors are usually more expensive.

You can search up columbia blue or light blue /softball/ pants and youll probobly get more results :)

How do you make something float above your head.  I'm going to cosplay Han Jee-Han from The Gamer webcomic, and he has his name, and "level" floating above his head.  So far, the best answer I've been able to come up with is to print it off on a transparency, and hold it up with one of those clear plastic holders for cards they stick in with flowers.  Does anyone have any suggestions, I'm pretty new at this.  Thank you.

I apologize if this has already been asked, and I know it's probably a super obvious question, but...how does one go about contouring troll makeup? I'm doing two troll cosplays this year (Damara and Meenah), and I want them to look really good, including the makeup, but I'm a bit clueless.

Anyone have any advice on how I would make Cheshire Cat's paws/claws from Madness Returns? I want to give them the creepy/boney feel to them.

This is Homestuck right? (not a big Homestuck fan) I would suggest trying to find a tutorial on Youtube (I'm sure they are out there). But from what I've heard, and from my limited experience in costume makeup, it tends to be a lot of trial and error. Sometime you just have to try a bunch of different things and go with what works the best.

How do I properly wash a wig? I have one that I sprayed with a ton of hairspray awhile back, and it smells like hairspray and so I really want to wash it. The problem is, it's a long-haired curly wig that's multicolored, so I'm worried the curls will tangle and the colors will tangle and/or bleed. Advice?  :-\

I would suggest spraying it with cold water mixed with a mild shampoo (some online stores that sell wigs also sell special wig shampoos but that may be more of an expense then necessary). Then spray it with just water to rinse the shampoo out. If it came colored then I wouldn't worry too much about the colors bleeding but it could uncurl or tangle if you aren't careful. I would probably test it on a small section hidden in an inner layer to see how it works first.

p.s. you could also try wrapping the curls around something (like foam curlers) while you work on it and especially while it drys to help it keep it's shape.

I see this was back from mid January but I feel bad that it was ignored, wig prices often depend on the length/style of the wig. You can also often find wigs on sale (especially for "black friday" sales). Arda wigs (http://arda-wigs.com (http://arda-wigs.com)) is actually going to have all wigs 20% off starting Feb 17th to Feb 22nd. Another favorite of mine for affordable wigs is Epic Cosplay (http://www.epiccosplay.com (http://www.epiccosplay.com)). You should only use human hair coloring if the wig is made of human hair (VERY expensive!). There are methods for coloring wigs with felt markers by either applying the marker directly to the wig or mixing the ink from the marker with isopropyl alcohol and spraying it on. There are numerous tutorials available on youtube on how to dye wigs (also both Arda Wigs and Epic Cosplay have tutorial sections). I don't think that dyeing a wig is going to make it look any less "cheep" and you would be better served spending the money you would need for the dye on just getting a better wig, however, if you need a specific color and can't find it anywhere then getting a white or light blond wig and dyeing it is a great option (although rather messy and time consuming).

It helps to know how realistic you want to go. Are you doing a gijinka, or are you doing furry, or some hybridized human version.

Just as a stab in the dark what I would do is get spray insulation foam from the HomeDepot. It comes in a can for $5. Spray it into a card board box lined with a plastic bag and then carve it down to what you want. You can even cut hand areas into it so you can wear them like gloves. When painted it simulates the texture relatively well, plus the slight give of the foam gives you that muscle over bone feel.

To make it look boney I suggest adding something or contouring it so that it kind of follows the metacarpals and a bit of the phalanges. Its a great way to hint at and make something look creepy without really going over the top like a skeleton.

WIG HELP, PLEASE! C:

Can I just be the first to say that making a long haired wing into a ponytail is mighty hard? Yikes.

Anyways, so I have (successfully, it seems!) put a long haired wig up into a ponytail by weaving piece of the hair back and forth on the 'under' part of it so instead of the netting showing on the back of my head, it's hair (kind of like a real head, I guess...without all the effort). I need it to stay, however, and I have a feeling that just hairspray isn't going to keep it from moving. I don't wish to continually use bobby pins (due to a glare or sheen from photos and the sun) yet will resort to that to assist the wig in keeping shape.

Is there a type of product that I could get and use that would keep the wig hair in place and keep it from moving around so I do not need to overly worry about it?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

To keep delicate wig fiber placement from shifting, I've hand sewn the fiber in place with a thread the same color as the wig. You'll have to be careful to not have too much of the thread showing, but if you make small, careful stitches across the wig fiber (perpendicular to the way the fibers run) and get a thread that matches as close as you can get, it should be nearly invisible from a distance. (For example, I sewed my little hair swirly thing down on this wig (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/61152978153), and while you can see the threads if you look really closely on some of the closer shots, you can hardly tell, since I used thread the same color as the blonde wig.)

I'm afraid that hairspray or other styling products like that would just make your wig clump up, get stiff, and still expose the wig netting. You can put a very light layer of hairspray on it once you sew it down, just to help keep it smooth.

Sewing is basically the more permanent and less intrusive version of bobby pins. :]

Hi there! I'm hoping to do an Elsa cosplay from Frozen, but I have absolutely no idea how to sew or do dresses or anything like that, I want to do the blue dress she makes for herself with all the crystals, and I really want it to be very high quality. Money is not really an issue because I know for what I want its going to cost a lot, but I do not know whether to go to a cosplay specialist taking commissions or to my sister's friend who is a seamstress and makes all her own clothes who says she would make it for me. Does anyone know a trustworthy commissioner who does high quality dresses and the like? Or should I go to someone close to me? I've never commissioned a cosplay before so a bit of help would be really appreciated. Thank you!!!
Title: Skullgirls Cosplay

Hello everyone! I don't usually participate in the forums but I'm just so excited for this year I couldn't wait! A lot of the topics in here seem to be about gatherings, but I just wanted to make a freeform Skullgirls topic where we could discuss our cosplays and gets tips. This year I'm going to be cosplaying Squigly (alt 1, listed below). I've gotten all the fabric I'll be using, I just wanted some advice on how to make leviathan.

I'm currently washing the fabric I'm using but I'll post a picture and some update photos as this comes together.

Also: I was thinking of making her sewn lips be cut open so I can talk and eat without worry. It's still have the wires but they'd look like she'd taking a blade and cut them as a little "eff you" to the Medicis. Would that seem appropriate for her?

@ManyRelish As someone who also wants to eventually cosplay squigly, I would say the cut open mouth seems fine. (Its what I would have done anyways)

as for leviathan I would say some medium thickness, semi bendable ( but not too bendy) wire and papier-mâché is in order. I would probably only have a small bit of neck before his head so that the top is not too heavy and I could use some heavy duty buttons at the base to clip it onto my wig and have it stay up. But for attaching the larger bottom part of him to the wig I have no clue, I would have to experiment.

I would recommend for leviathen a few different ways. The lightest way is use 20oz soda bottles. Cut off the ends and make plugs that you can pass thin wire through. If you want a plastic tube a little longer than a 20oz bottle look for tennis ball tubes. The wire can be gotten at Home depot or if you have a bunch of old wire coat hangers lying around that could work too.

The other two materials you could try to make the sections of the body are pvc piping or poster tubes.

(Sorry for the late reply!)

Do you know if there are any non-video tutorials? I tend to get confused by video tutorials, what with having to pause constantly and such.

EDIT: I also have another issue I could use some insight on. I'm copy-pasting it from my FB.

So I've not started ANY of my cosplays for Fanime. I also realized that I likely won't be there on Day 0, at least not for long enough to justify making a cosplay for that day.

I'm still gonna be doing Meenah for sure--that's currently the only one I'm sure of. I'll also likely be doing Jane, since I have most of the stuff for her already.

But that's only two cosplays for a three-day con. I'd like to bring at LEAST three total, preferably four.

Right now, these are the ones I'm considering:

-Rarity.
Pros: I've wanted to cosplay her forever and I think I could pull her off.
Cons: Kind of scared to, what with all the creepiness in some parts of the fandom. Also, finding a good white dress will probably be hell.

-Hex Maniac.
Pros: Looks fairly simple, and would definitely be a lot of fun.
Cons: Might get hot, since it's San Jose in late May and the costume is long-sleeved, dark in color, and also features a long, dark wig.

-Aradiana Jones.
Pros: Mostly complete--I just need to get new pants (or even just repair my current ones) and a new hat. And it got a really good reception at Halloweenstuck.
Cons: Same as Hex Maniac--it was a warm enough costume on Halloween!

-Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way.
Pros: I've wanted to cosplay Enoby for SO LONG. The outfit itself would be pretty easy to put together, too.
Cons: That FUCKING wig. How would I go about that?!

-Aranea Serket.
Pros: Looks pretty simple overall.
Cons: The horns. I had a pair of Serket horns, but they broke because I suck at storing shit like that...and since someone else made them, I'm not sure how I'd go about making my own. Fucking Serket horns, man.

I'm open to suggestions as well. My fandoms that I feel I can currently cosplay (for those not in the know) are Homestuck (duh), Pokemon, MLP:FIM, and Gravity Falls.

Acey Arisen>
For troll contouring, you basically want to do regular skin-tone contouring, but in darker greys and whites rather than in shades that match your natural skin tone.
Here[/usl] is a good reference image for regular contouring.

I've only done contouring on creme-based makeup (it was Ben Nye brand and already powdered and sealed) once, for someone else, since I use water-based paint (Kyrolan Aquacolor) myself, so I'm not sure how this will differ when being done on creme paint. I think most people use creme paint in darker/lighter shades and blend it in, though using this method works once the paint has been powdered and sealed.

You'll want eyeshadow in a non-sparkly dark grey and a non-sparkly white, and brushes similar to [url=http://sweetmakeuptemptations.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/evgeny1.jpg]these that I found on google (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/69291882264). When doing contouring over paint, it tends to want to stay in place, rather than blend like it would on bare skin (or skin with regular foundation on), so you'll have to use thin layers and build them up carefully. Using the dark grey, add shadows to the sides of the nose, the jawline, under the cheekbones, and the side of the forehead (for feminine contouring, which you seem to be doing). Get some powder on the largest of the eyeshadow brushes, and then blow on it slightly or tap it lightly to get off the excess powder, then lightly apply. You can build up a few layers if you need deeper shading. For anything really detailed (undereye bags, harsh cheekbones that would need a sharper line, etc.), use the smaller brushes. If you aren't wearing other eyeshadow, sweep the white powder over your lids with the larger brush and then use the darker powder with a smaller brush in the crease, if you have double eyelids, or wherever the shadows naturally fall if you have single eyelids. Blend your contouring with the largest brush, the big fluffy powder one.

Do basically the same with the highlights. Bridge of the nose, tops of the cheekbones or apples of the cheeks, center of the forehead, tip of the chin, browbone, inner corner of the eye. You can do the apples of the cheeks instead of the cheekbones if you want a "cuter" look (I'd do this for Nepeta, Fef, etc.), or do fairly harsh high cheekbone lines if you want a more chiseled look (softer and harder variations on this tend to be best for elegant, tough, or evil characters -- Kanaya would likely have a softer version of harsh cheekbones, Condy would have harsher cheekbones, Meenah would be about in the middle, etc.). Really, how you actually shape your face will depend on how you perceive your character and what looks best on your face. You probably won't do your highlights super harsh, though - keep them fairly soft, to look like light is falling naturally on your face.

Apply blush in your blood color where you would apply blush (either the cheekbones or the apples of your cheeks), and maybe swipe a little on your eyelids, and you're done! Set with powder and another layer of sealing spray.

It's a bit tricky to contour over body paint, as I said, since it doesn't blend as easily as it would on skin, so it tends to give a sharper line than it normally would. You can combat this by only applying a little bit of the powder at a time and building up layers, rather than trying to put on a whole lot at once, since it is easy to make it too dark and too harsh that way.

Also, with contouring, it may look weird in person, like you are wearing slightly too much makeup, but it won't show up in pictures otherwise. Apply it to an amount that looks natural in person, and then one more very light coat to deepen the shade enough to be picked up by cameras, especially with harsh con lighting.

I hope that helped some! I might be able to make you a quick little photo tutorial if the text and the photo I posted aren't enough, but no promises. (Also, if you wanted to do contouring for human-colored cosplays, it would be basically the same process, just with a slightly ashy [rather than orange/red/yellow] brown that is a few shades darker than your skin and a white or cream color that is a few shades lighter than your skin, if you wanted to step up your human-colored cosplay makeup game, as well.)

I have another troll makeup question for y'all, if anyone can help:
How does one go about covering tattoos when wearing body paint? The person in question has very light skin and dark tattoos. We tried just using Ben Nye creme makeup (I believe it was their Creme Foundation in Cadaver Grey, but I could be wrong) at a previous con, and her tats were still visible. We'll probably switch to a water-based makeup (probably Kryolan Aquacolor, since that's what I use) for this con. PAX is not an option.

I've heard of using regular tattoo cover and then painting over it, but it seems like using tattoo cover and then paint over it would mess up the tattoo cover underneath (or the troll paint wouldn't stick to the tattoo cover, or they'd mix and smear, etc.), and these seem to be assuming AA makeup for creme makeup, not water-based. Is there another option, or a better way to cover tattoos? I'd rather not spend hours trying to cover her ink with layer after layer of paint, only to have it still show through and get all cakey from having too many layers.

Google hasn't been much help -- I can either find how to paint on tattoos that aren't normally there or I can find how to cover tattoos for human skin-color cosplay, but I can't find much on how to cover tattoos for unusual skin-colored cosplay.

Any suggestions would be great. :] (We can also try a few things out before the con to see what works best. I think her arms will be covered with tights, it's mostly just one on her upper back (with a backless dress) that won't be able to be covered by troll skin colored-fabric and look natural.

Thanks!

Hey, I'm rather new to the scene, I managed to pull of Sherlock last year because I look enough like him that I could pull it off just using clothing I had, but I'm going to attempt a cosplay for Jareth this year. most of the stuff I can probably pick up in some degree from the internet and random shopping, but I have zero experience for wigs, and that's somewhat necessary for this. Are there any particular things I should and should not get when picking one? I've been told getting them from China actually seems to be better quality at lower cost, but I just have no clue where to start here, especially given the sheer strangeness of that hair.

I've gotten all my wigs from sellers on eBay based in China and I've been really satisfied with them!

My rules of thumb for eBay wig shopping is:

I think this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jareth-David-Bowie-from-Labyrinth-wig-Halloween-Idea-/380489042984?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item5896ea0c28) looks pretty viable! It's actually from a US seller so it's not deep discount level but it's fairly priced!
Snoop around a bit more though!! There might be something better out there! Best of luck and I hope this helps!

I have a really out-there suggestion that I've never personally tried but might be worth experimenting with?

Maybe get a thin yet opaque bald cap and cut it so it's flat and covers the tattoo area, then affix it with spirit gum and apply makeup over it?
I do know that theatrical bald caps are meant to work well with makeup so I don't think it would look particularly unnatural!

Just an educated guess at a solution!

Here is Arda-Wig's "Jareth": http://arda-wigs.com/products/jareth (http://arda-wigs.com/products/jareth)
It isn't styled so you would have to take some hairspray to it to get it to look the way you want (do NOT use spiking hair gel as normal hair gel is meant to work with the oils and texture of your hair and synthetic wigs don't have natural oils, although you can used product designed to work with synthetic wigs such as this shaping creme http://www.wigs.com/shaping-creme-by-beautimark.html (http://www.wigs.com/shaping-creme-by-beautimark.html)). Some of the features to look for in a wig that would work well for a spiky top is a large crimped scalp (this allows you to spike it without having visible wefts) and a wig that is layered with different length of hair.
Here is a good tutorial from Arda on spiking a wig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KjFky3nSNg&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KjFky3nSNg&feature=youtu.be) (I might try just holding the wig upside down and spraying it while tying off the sections you don't want spiked or running a comb lightly through the spikes to break them up after you've gotten the volume you like)
I have also used "costume" wigs before to great effect, but the reason I tend to go for "cosplay" wigs is because most costume wigs are not heat resistant and can be cut easily but not styled (it's a "you get what you get" scenario) while cosplay wigs on the other hand are often heat resistant and easily styled. Of course it all depends on your level of comfort with trying new things and branching out in your cosplay experience. I hope that some of this information has been helpful.

they would have to be some really tiny wings to secure them directly to your skin (some combination of skin colored rubber like the bald cap idea by keitoghostie and spirit gum to affix it). The best way to go would probably be making straps/bands out of skin colored elastic cloth. You can used solid lycra if you end up needing to covers wires running between the two wings, or if the wings join at the point they reach your back you might be able to get away with a mesh much like the one used for 'invisible' shoes in this tutorial: http://andsewingishalfthebattle.com/invisible-shoes (http://andsewingishalfthebattle.com/invisible-shoes)

I've also heard of people having the wing base attached to backpack straps
- actually I just remembered a really good tutorial I saw...

How does one go about covering tattoos when wearing body paint?
I have a really out-there suggestion that I've never personally tried but might be worth experimenting with?

Maybe get a thin yet opaque bald cap and cut it so it's flat and covers the tattoo area, then affix it with spirit gum and apply makeup over it?
I do know that theatrical bald caps are meant to work well with makeup so I don't think it would look particularly unnatural!

Just an educated guess at a solution!
hmm~ I'm afraid that would wrinkle up oddly and not look enough like skin, and be even worse than having outlines of a tattoo showing under body paint, especially since it would have to cover a fairly large area (rather than a tiny little tattoo). Thanks for the suggestion, though! I think I'm going to ask around on different sites and experiment with a few things myself (who knows, maybe putting creme-based coverup under water-based paint would actually work?).

Hey I'm doing a cosplay and I have to make wings I can attach to my back. The shirt is open where they're going to be and I'm not sure how make wings light enough that I can attach them to my skin and how I should go about securing them.

Anyone have any pointers?
If they are light enough to only need a little support but too heavy to affix directly to your skin, you can try making clear or flesh-tone backpack straps. Maybe something like the straps on these shoes (http://andsewingishalfthebattle.com/invisible-shoes/), which aren't very visible and probably strong enough to hold up at least a couple of pounds worth of wings? When I did wings (granted, mine were quite large and heavy, and I had a dress that I could hide the attachment under), I did backpack straps out of webbing (like what actual backpack straps are made of) that I fed through tiny slits in the back of my dress in order to hold them up, and they stayed in place really well. Even shirtless, I think that straps made out of colored mesh like that would work quite well, and be difficult to see. I don't know what the character design looks like, but it sounds like you have the added advantage of having a shirt that will likely cover the straps in the front around your armpits, where it would look the oddest. You can probably also spirit glue or Hollywood tape the straps down a little in the back to keep them as flat as possible, reducing any shadowing caused by them gaping.

Good luck!

Have you looked at this liquid theatrical makeup? http://www.mehron.com/Liquid_Makeup_p/111.htm (http://www.mehron.com/Liquid_Makeup_p/111.htm)
It might be easier to use over a creme foundation then trying to get water based to not smear. I know water based can be tricky, you really can't even use a moisturizer underneath it.

Liquid might be good, actually. I want to go with a water-based cake because that's what I'm used to using and because the creme-based cake didn't agree with her sensitive skin (but has had no problems on my own sensitive skin), but I had a feeling it would be really difficult to get it to cover her tattoos/cover something that would cover her tattoos, hence my post.

Would that particular paint be okay to use on faces, as well, without it cracking? I might just have to pick up a small bottle of it and experiment.

Also, one more body painting question unrelated to my first one: does anyone have a recommendation for an opaque white body paint (doing rainbow drinker Kanaya Maryam from Homestuck) that isn't either Snaz (which, in my experience with my friends wearing it, tends to be smeary and flaky) or creme-based cake (or clown white, or anything else really heavy and greasy)? As I've mentioned, I've used water-based cakes, but I'm afraid that white would be too transparent for what I want. does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks :]

The product title says it can be used on faces, but if you have problems with that I imagine you could try using one type of product on the face and the liquid one for just the body or even just to cover the tat. I think the reviews seem helpful (e.g. clean oily skin with astringent first).

I'm trying to paint white onto a rather dark blue. I've tested a fabric medium with acrylic paint and I've tried both applying a thin portion of dimensional fabric paint directly to the fabric and also painting it on in layers. The acrylic with fabric medium looked the best but washes off and the dimensional paint looks glossy which I really don't want. I'm making the wii fit trainer and this is for the logo on her top. So it needs to be able to flex a stretch with the fabric without cracking.

You might want to try screen printing ink. I recently started playing with it and it's awesome. Definetly get the water based kind, the other you need a flash dryer to cure it. Speedball has a small jar on amazon pretty inexpensive. The nice thing about screen printing ink is it stretches, and doesn't add to much weight.

I suggest using iron in vinyl instead. No color will bleed through and you can stretch the vinyl and fabric (a bit) once everything is ironed on. Also for the OCD, the lines are a lot neater and cleaner.

Hey guys! So I just received my uniform for this anime I'm cosplaying from, but they got the wrong colour of the skirt and I'm really disappointed by it :C

Is there anyway I can dye the skirt to make the colour the same as the one in the anime, or should I just go and try to sew a new one?

(The colour right now is a light ish green, and the colour I'm trying to make it blue.)

Thanks guys ; A;

I have a tip for lighting it up, but since we are going a deeper color, you may have to resort to a die bath to deepening the color, although this might prove too much. If I got pictures, or hex number colors (pick the color here, copy the number at top and post (http://www.colorpicker.com)) of the skirt, I could help you find the ink you may need, or it may prove too powerful to do anything.

Thank you! I had been considering using paint intended for screen printing but I was a little nervous about trying to use it with just a stencil. It worked great! A little less crisp around the edges then I would have liked but you can hardly notice (I think perhaps I put the first coat on a little too heavy).

I'm using a white water-based cake for wii fit trainer and it is pretty opaque. I have been using wolfe aquacolor and I apply 3 coats. That is actually another idea for what you could try to cover the tattoo too. Apply a layer of the white water-based cake as a "primer" then the color you want once it drys. It should make any color put on top of it show up better.

Technically requests like this should go here: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/board,40.0.html (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/board,40.0.html)

However, I don't blame you for posting on this form too as the other doesn't seem to get much activity. You could also try to find someone on Etsy.com who does custom cosplay stuff and see if they take requests for items. Or you could try posting in this board on cosplay.com: http://www.cosplay.com/forumdisplay.php?f=269 (http://www.cosplay.com/forumdisplay.php?f=269) However, if this is for Fanime then you are cutting it pretty close if you need a full custom cosplay. (personally I like etsy because you can read reviews and see how many sales a person has and such so I feel that it is a safer shopping environment if you know what to look for in a seller)

depends on where it needs to be thinned. You could use thinning shears (I have never done this but will probably need to experiment myself in the near future) on bangs sections. There should be tutorials on youtube on how to use them. Or if you just need to take some weight off of a wig then you could remove wefts on the interior where no one will see. I would start on an interior weft about and inch in, cut the weft and then seam rip it away from the wig base and continue along until you are an inch away from the other side. probably alternate weft until you achieve the desired thickness but be careful to avoid any areas that would leave the wig with a bald looking patch. Of course how you are styling it makes a HUGE difference on what you should do to thin it.

I've considered Wolfe because I've heard that it is pretty opaque, so I'll probably check that out. thanks. :]

We actually found a tattoo solution by actually asking an employee at the Kryolan store in SF. They make a skin-safe colored hairspray that apparently more people use on their skin than on their hair, and that combined with a layer of Aquacolor does the trick. It obviously wouldn't work on faces, but that isn't an issue. It is fairly opaque and doesn't seem to crack.

Using a base of white with the color on top is a good idea, though. I'll have to keep that in mind, in case our other solutions end up not working. :] (I''ll have white paint with me at con, so it would easy enough to try that in a pinch)

How annoying/hard is it to wander the convention in a larger gown (i.e. a hoop skirt). I have a costume that has a fuller skirt but I am not sure if having a large gown will be annoying.  I would love to hear what experience anyone has with this.  The skirt I have is very large, similar to a civil war ballgown.
Title: Re: Large Skirts
Post by: Torai on April 02, 2014, 09:05:12 PM
I didn't exactly have a hoop skirt last year, but my dress was pretty dang poofy thanks to an obnoxious amount of tulle. That said, it wasn't that hard to navigate the sometimes overly crowded hallways so long as I was conscious of the people around me. Maybe it helped a little that my friend was there too to make sure my dress was alright and stayed right by my side. I didn't have any problems really! I know there was a gorgeous Vanellope Von Schweetz cosplayer who wore a really large hoop skirt last year and I want to say she also had someone helping her navigate around- but really it was so pretty you could just see her easily and know to go around. So I mean you should honestly be fine if you feel comfortable walking in it anyways!

The only annoying thing about it had to be going up and down stairs since I was really worried I'd trip on the back of the dress or miss a step because I couldn't see the steps but after a few times it got easier and there was a sort of princess-y feeling to it when going down stairs (hehehee~)

Hey guys! So I was thinking of getting a wig for a cosplay I've been working on for awhile. On my first attempt wearing my cosplay, I decided to temporarily dye half of my hair white. Although it was okay for the occasion I wore it for at the time, I realize that it would be extremely inconvenient to use this method at Fanime. However, so far, it has been difficult finding a trustworthy seller than would sell an inexpensive, yet decent looking, wig of the kind I'm looking for: a half-black and half-white wig of appropriate length so I can put it into twin buns (as seen in the link provided). I was thinking of purchasing a white cosplay wig and dying half of it black through methods I found online, however, I am not sure how exactly I should start. I don't know where I should buy the appropriate white cosplay wig, nor am I sure of how exactly I should approach dying half of it black...

If anyone here is an expert on wigs, I would appreciate your guidance. O A O;;;

I've had a lot of luck using Kryolan Color Spray (https://us.kryolan.com/product/color-spray#D40) on wigs. Otherwise there are split color wigs available!!
Here are a few that I think would work - it looks like you want to keep it short so this one might be the best (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cos-Harajuku-White-and-Black-Mix-short-straight-Heat-Resistant-WIG-gift-/171078280298?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item27d50f646a) (it also has a less scary shipping time, haha) - these also look good 1 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Y231-womens-wavy-Black-White-mixed-long-curly-cosplay-wigs-free-wig-cap-/251356313561?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item3a8600f7d9) 2 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Fashion-Lolita-Black-White-Mixed-Curly-Long-Cosplay-Wig-gift-/181083704698?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a296e0d7a) 3 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Popular-New-Cosplay-Fashion-Lolita-Black-White-Mixed-Curly-Long-Wig-/170896329576?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item27ca370b68) 4 (http://4) - they're all similar items but from different sellers!

As far as the buns go, I'd recommend buying them separately - they're pretty inexpensive!
These (http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-stylish-Hot-Sale-Ladys-Girls-Fashion-Straight-Hair-Bun-Extensions-PP07-/281174175959?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&var=&hash=item41774970d7) look decent but I'm sure there's something better out there (I'm rly tired right now, sorry)

I hope this is helpful, and since a number of cosplay wig sellers are based in Hong Kong and China I would recommend ordering sooner than later because sometimes the shipping time can take a while.

And on the subject:
REMINDER TO ALL COSPLAYERS!!
IF YOU'VE BEEN HOLDING OUT ON BUYING A WIG FROM EBAY NOW IS THE TIME TO DO SO, OTHERWISE BE READY FOR ANXIETY OVER SHIPPING TIMES!!!

Thanks! That was a lot more information that I had expected to receive.

Although, I'm debating between buying that short wig and attaching buns or buying that long wig and styling it into buns.

I am thinking of buying the short wig, but I am not sure how the outcome will be if I were to dye a black bun extension white using the color spray. Do you think it would work? Or would the white barely be able to cover up the black? I've never worked with wigs and any type of dye before so yeah.

My other option is buying that long wig and styling it into buns. If it's too long for my liking, I believe I can either trim it or even thin it if it's too thick. I've never styled a wig before either. Would this method work as well?

Thanks for the help. I'm sorry that I'm a total wig noob.

If you've never styled a wig before I would HIGHLY recommend getting the short wig and adding the buns separately. And you wouldn't have to color the buns. You would just buy one in black and one in white. (styling a long wig that is not specifically designed for up-dos will almost always require adding wefts along the base to make it look good and that may be difficult if you inexperienced with styling wigs).

Mmkay. Sounds like a plan. Although, my only problem now is that I've had difficulty finding a white straight bun extension of the type I'm looking for.. So far, all of the ones I've seen consist of braids and knots and such... I don't want that..

If I can't find a white hair bun extension, I'm thinking of either dying another hair bun extension white (maybe a really light blond one), or perhaps attempting to create my own bun extension through the use of white hair extensions and a sock bun. I have no idea how either method will work out though :/

EDIT: Perhaps these extensions might work?.. I could just attach them to the wig and roll them in to buns. If it's too long, I can always just trim them, right?

Those look workable! I thought the ones I linked had both black and white but then again I was fairly tired, haha.
If that's your plan, make sure to get a BUNCH of bobby pins in both black and white so u don't have slippy buns.

Either way, if you plan on spraying them with the color spray it won't be 100% effective in covering it up, especially going from dark to light (I'm doing a gradient on my wig so it's a bit more variable, but yeah)

The ones Ghostie linked DOES have white. They just call the color "613# linen". But they have 7 available and it looks white to me.

What's it supposed to look like when done? What character/series is it from?

Either way, outdoor store or army surplus places usually have straps and things to make backpack straps.

Nightblade irelia from league of legends. I need it done by fanime this year. I looked into a harness design like from attack on titan but its getting it attached to the prop that im worried about.

If you are worried about the prop being too heavy for adhesive velcro or getting glue to adhere strongly to the traps I should suggest crewing the straps onto the prop using a drywall anchor system at shown on this Home Depot page: http://www.homedepot.com/p/E-Z-Ancor-Twist-N-Lock-50-Drywall-Anchors-with-Screws-25-Pack-25200/100133106 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/E-Z-Ancor-Twist-N-Lock-50-Drywall-Anchors-with-Screws-25-Pack-25200/100133106)
I would make a square pattern with four screws wherever you want an anchor point from the prop to the straps (putting the anchors into the prop and then stewing through the straps into the anchors).

and reinforce the straps where you are screwing through them. Maybe even use a thin square of plywood or stiff plastic. So the strap is wedged between the prop and the plywood. (so the crews don't pull through the straps).

I plan on cosplaying as Rei from Free! and he has those bright violet eyes. I have light blue-green eyes and most of the contacts I've seen so far might end up showing my natural color around the pupil depending on how dilated my eyes are. Basically I'm looking for contacts that will blend a little so that they look natural but still be opaque enough that it will show a bright vibrant violet color and not just a hint of violet. I would really like a diameter of 14.5 mm or less as I'm not looking to make my eyes appear any bigger. I would also really like them to have a prescription option as I do need vision correction. Any suggestions? If you have cosplayed characters with purple eyes (Rei or otherwise) what contacts did you use? (reference photos would be appreciated)

I wasn't sure about this one. But I'm planning for my cosplay to release some smoke.

However rules dictate no fog machine.

So I'm not sure if it's OK or not.

Actually it is a fog machine or rather a very small one that'll be fitted into the robotic arm of my cosplay.

Really all a fog machine is, is just a heating element and fog juice (1:3 ratio of glycerin to distilled water).

I have most of the design written down and ready to build. I'm just waiting to see if it'll be OK to do so.

The real trick I'm trying to accomplish is creating different color smogs to simulate a magic like effect.

Reading over the rules it looks like Fanime prohibits any kind of "smoke, fog, or odors" to be generated by a costume (insert witty joke about con goers with poor hygiene). It is probably a health/safety concern with enclosed spaces and large crowds. I know people with severe asthma that would be triggered by the smoke generated from fog machines. I wanted to be able to direct you to an email address where you could direct such concerns because these forums aren't always looked over by officials but I couldn't find one that exactly fit. Maybe rovers, and if not they might be able to direct you to the right people ([email protected]).

Hello there! Perhaps someone can assist me here.

First cosplay: I'm looking to cosplay this nifty individual here (http://i.gyazo.com/b67be48fd74d84f074e1c467dd3181fe.jpg) (Front, and back (http://i.gyazo.com/29170dbde03044a419611032a0540d59.png)). I have several questions about how to approach it. Now, let me begin and say my only knowledge of sewing is by hand. I have never used a sewing machine before and the only machine I have here at home is constantly being used. A family member has a job making clothing from home so every time I ask for a lesson, I'm denied. Now, I cannot make his weapon. I'd be flying to Fanime and I'm afraid that they won't let me carry such an item onboard. And I don't want to see my hard work go to waste, either.

But. hm. How could I make the entire chest piece. Like, all of this (http://i.gyazo.com/734be9978e4854c8bb6318c932229eee.png). I have no idea to begin. This would be the character's splash art. Their model in game is a bit different. Like this. (http://i.gyazo.com/0341c1c7d5d27405d01bc48a785df0e2.png) I rather do the in-game model version, rather than their splash. How could I make the.. brown vest-looking item, and the crest. Then, the red-gold armor plating. I haven't gone thrift-store shopping yet but I plan to a week or two from now.

I'd also like to find a way how to make his gloves, the single shoulder pad and the um, fur? feathers? around his neck. OH, and wig! I'd love to cut my own hair short but I am currently trying to find a new job. And get out of my current one. But, I have to unfortunately, still appear decent.

That's one cosplay, now I have another question for another.

Second cosplay: How could one make a glove like this (http://i.gyazo.com/e2715c4260d38f643de10f5a272a33a7.png)? I'd like to have it light up, heh. But if that's not possible, I want to at least have this item done and completed. I was thinking about using paper mache, but what other options could be available?

Thank you in advance!!

Title: 1-Way Visors
Post by: Dreadhawk on April 08, 2015, 09:26:09 AM
I've looked on various sites for the best way to do this but nobody really seems to be able to explain exactly how it works. I can get the construction down, but nobody seems to explicitly state how they make it look so good seeing out of the visor.

I'm looking to make a gold, mirrored visor (think Master Chief) and the easiest way I've been able to somewhat achieve this is by spraying some Krylon Looking Glass on one side of clear craft plastic and then layering it with gold/yellow vinyl. It works, but I can barely see through the side that isn't mirrored which is a potential safety hazard were I to walk around the con with it.

Any tips?

most hair gels will not hold spikes in wigs as well as hair spray and a blow dryer. Might try some Got 2B glued spiking glue but use sparingly.

Since you're pretty new I'd probably recommend using some combination of paper mache and paperclay. The paperclay will probably work well for getting those details. You can cover a plastic mask with painters tape or masking tape for a base (because most things don't stick well to plastic, though I've never tried paper mache over something completely covered in masking tape) or look at YouTube for tutorials on making a mask from scratch. Also, I'm rather partial towards plaster cloth over paper mache to get a clean look. It's pretty easy to use although requires sanding. You can find plaster cloth and paperclay at most craft stores. If you really want to commission it look for artist's that take those types of commissions on Etsy or Cosplay.com

We haven't gotten back to working on them yet (we rushed last minute for last fanime and I think they could use some improvements before they are ready) but the solution I've been considering is attaching them to the belt that goes around your waist with large lobster claw style clasps. I want to attach 2 straps up the length of the inner facing side of each of the boxes up to my waist belt (it can go under the skirt so they should be hidden) and then have the clasps on the end of the straps to they can attach right to the belt and even be removed at any time if need be. I don't know if this is the best solution but it's an idea.

I know this might seem pretty last minute, but I've been working on my cosplay for Attack on Titan x Hatsune Miku, I'm more or less very close to finishing everything, just got a lot of painting left to do. What I'm asking for help on is how best to attach the 3D gear to my belt. Unfortunately, I also don't have the back piece which I've struggled to try to figure out how to make and also due to time constraints (I know it's a tough cosplay to take on last minute with limited time) so it won't be incorporated in the costume but the boxes are still present.Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks that sounds like a very doable solution. I'll have to try that one out. It's coming down the wire and I'm nervous about being able to properly attach the gear so this is very helpful. I just hope it won't look awkward because I'm a bit short and with the harness and everything hopefully I can still walk properly...thanks!!!!
Title: Body Paint: Armpits
Post by: Bolli on May 03, 2015, 12:38:31 PM
HOW DO I FIX THIS PROBLEM!??!?!

I fear my armpits will be showing and I don't think they will be ok when I put body paint on them!

Here is what I have been suggested so far by my friends:

1. Liquid Latex (That is a little expensive...)
2. Body paint + hairspray (That sounds like a sticky mess)
3. Body Paint + flour/powder/talc (Sounds messy-ish)
4. Wear a body suit (I don't have the money or time for one plus they are scary and might look odd)
5. Taint my armpits with sharpie or any kind of marker (what?)
6. Deal with it and have fun! CONFIDENCE MAKES ONE LOOK SO GOOD! (My cousin and no she doesn't cosplay btw)

Hello there!

It's totally possible to paint your armpits for cosplay. It may not stay as well as an area that is drier and doesn't rub against itself, but it will stay in place if done correctly. You also probably aren't going to be doing a ton of photos that show your pits, so that shouldn't be much of an issue (and can be photoshopped if it is). Scroll down a bit to see the results of my own armpit bodypainting (though this is white water-based paint, so it's pretty much the hardest color to get even and smooth and opaque). (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/tagged/kanaya-maryam) I can't believe I'm posting a link to pictures of my armpits...

Also, take a look through this tag. (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/tagged/fabrickind-goes-on-troll-paint-crusades) the first post is specifically about sweat.

There's so much misinformation about body paint out there. Don't listen to your friends, except for bodysuit friend. They know what's up. If you don't want a bodysuit though, you'll have to paint.

Otherwise, you have a few options. The two that are probably most feasible are a well-sealed water-based paint and PAX.

PAX is something I've never personally used, but it's popular. It is a combination of Prosaid prosthetic adhesive (basically a body-safe glue) and Liquitex acrylic paint. This gets applied to your skin, is powdered carefully and heavily, and then stays pretty much until you soak it off with water and/or PAX remover. This will give you the best staying power in somewhere like your armpits, though it does tend to wrinkle quite a bit, so it might not be 100% suitable for somewhere that moves a lot. If you want to wear the costume more than one day, this is probably your best option. It also can't be used on the face. Be careful with this option if you have sensitive skin. This thread (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=216634) has a lot of information.

You can also use a water-based paint that is properly sealed. I say water-based for a few reasons -- it is relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain, it can be applied without an airbrush (both of those things are drawbacks of alcohol-activated paint, though that is very high quality, professional, and waterproof), and it is unlikely to smudge (unlike creme paint, which should only be used on the face or for small details). When I've painted my armpits, I've just mixed the paint with water, but Liquiset or a similar product will increase the waterproofing. You will want to shave the hair from the area, mix the paint with water of Liquiset until it is a creamy (but not overly wet) consistency, and apply it with either a brush or a sponge, making sure to dab it on in layers. If you have oily skin or want to decrease shine, you can use a powder over the paint, though this isn't needed for setting. Many theatrical powders have antiperspirants in the formula, so if you are worried about sweat, use one of these. (You can also apply your regular antiperspirant/deodorant product before, just make sure that it isn't excessive or gloppy.) Once you have built up thin layers of paint until it is a good opacity, you will liberally mist yourself with a setting spray. I have used both Mehron's Barrier Spray and Ben Nye's Final Seal. I wouldn't recommend hairspray, since it isn't meant for prolonged skin contact, and can be sticky or crunchy, depending on the formula. It also won't have as much staying power. Make sure you apply the spray in layers, as well, as to not melt the paint underneath it, but be sure that you build up many layers so it is fully sealed. And then you're done! Enjoy the con!

I've never used liquid latex body paint before, but it has a tendency to peel

There's more detailed information in some of those tumblr posts, and you can find all sorts of tutorials online if you just search them up. If you have any questions about body paint, feel free to ask.

I hope that helps. :] I usually carry body painting supplies with me at the con (including sealant), so if you run into trouble and you see me, I'll be willing to help.

LOL It's ok pits are cool, yo! And I'm still new to cosplaying. It's just fun but sometimes I can be a perfectionist...Sometimes. And even thought my costume isn't a good quality at all (I try to work with what is cheapest.), my main problem was my armpits getting all pooped with the body paint. Bleh!!! I doubt I'll want any pictures taken but if so then I will probably not lift my arms! So you are right. XD

I have that cheap body/face paint cream from Party City btw. I have used it before for a lame Homestuck cosplay 2 Halloweens ago. It was messsssy! Well, I got a little bit smeared on my shirt and pants. (Then again I applied it in the girls bathroom in a hurry wow)
I mean, I don't know what else to work with most of the time and I am usually trying to find the cheapest stuff, also that is available in stores near me. And since I feel like I wont be using it much, more like twice or once a year. (Halloween and a Convention) I feel like maybe I shouldn't care much but my brain is coming up with thoughts and they are unpleasant!!!

Also, I have hairy arms and I have this thing where I just can't shave them. Not sure how those other paints will do if I won't shave my arms.  :-[

I might just have to carry cleaning wipes and extra paint with me if I can't do anything else or at least afford to. I'm truly ruined! XD

Thank you so much for your help and your tips! I am most likely to keep those suggestion for another future cosplay (when I get a part time job and save money at least!).
I really appreciate it! :3

While I can't think of any suggestions besides using PAX, I will say that if you don't remove the hair from wherever you're going to apply it, it'll be painful to remove. I used the stuff on my arms for Halloween as Marshall Lee a few years ago and accidentally applied too far up past where I shaved and it was a total pain to remove. Harsh scrubbing because I couldn't get it to peel off like I could with other spots. PAX seemed to be relatively water proof though (at least when I washed my hands) and it didn't rub off unless I started to dig my nails into it to remove it on purpose.

Really sorry I can't help besides giving you a tidbit on using PAX. Good luck!

So uh I got my wig today! :D

But it's pooooop! I mean the top part, you can see the lines from where the hair has been put on!

Like I don't know how to show a pic...It's not as terrible but it's pretty annoying and ugly! D:

How would I fix this? Is there another way to fix this problem without using hair extensions/wefts? ._.

Not quite sure what you mean by "lines" if you mean that you can see the individual wefts pieces it's unusual that it's happening at the top of the wigs as you would usual see that in the back on cheep wigs. There is not a whole lot you can do besides filling it out with more wefts. If it's heat resistant you can try using a blow dryer to style it and cover parts where it's showing wig base/weft sections. Or you can try using hairspray to style it and fix the issue. If there is a dramatic color difference between your hair and the wig you can try to get a wig cap to match the wig and try minimizing the appearance. I'm not sure exactly how bad your wig is but in my experience if you take a wig you just got out of the bag and your first reaction is "this looks cheep as dirt" chances are you'll end up spending more time & money on fixing it then is really worth your while. Overly shiny wigs and heat resistant wigs with "bag hair" can be easy fixes but if the wig is so thin that weft sections are showing.... that is a lot of work to fix.

The tissue will probably not stay in place. It is often difficult to get proper wig caps to even stay in place. Get a light colored "stocking" style wig cap and when you put it on bobypin the heck out of it so it doesn't slip around.

Hi. so im trying to add some battle damage to a mask(like giving it a whole scratched up battle scars type of thing) but im not sure how to do that. i dont wanna carve up my mask( dont think that would work anyways) but have no clue how to paint on battle scars. any advice?

Ugh having more problems with this cheap poop wig....Yeah my fault for not finding a nicer one cause my dad would get mad if I spent more.
So I thought I could fix it with either colored tissues under the wig or like others suggested, a light colored cap.

NOPE! It is even worse because the the cap lines whatever that holds the wig are yellow! Its ugly! My hair is white but its cap is an ugly yellow! Then again I am dying it a pale lavender color but the yellow lines are so gross. Maybe the color will change with the dye? I am dying it but more like spritzing it around here and there.

What do now? Maybe I should stop being so picky and go with it, have fun...It is my first time I am cosplaying at a con.

Willing to take notes and suggestions though.

This is really a "go look around youtube" type of issue. There are lots of tutorials up there from some very talented people on how to paint things to look battle damaged. Here is a good place to start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb6CXGortrQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb6CXGortrQ) when he starts painting the armor you can see how layering colors and rubbing it with a rag when parts are still wet can create some pretty cool looks. But that's just one method. There are lots of options out there depending on your budget/skill level and the look you are going for.

Dying things can be tricky/messy. The one time I have well and truly hated a costume is when I tried to dye something. I have friends that would rather spray a wig with some of that temporary hair color rather then try dying it. If you are none too pleased with the wig to begin with and you really want to try dying something then by all means, have fun with it! Better to try out dying a wig that you aren't fond of to begin with then trying it for the first time down the road and "ruining" a perfectly good wig. Who knows, you just might like the way it looks better with the dye. Just be really careful what you get dye on and I highly suggest looking up WIG dying tutorials (there are some different wig specific methods). And the most important advise I can give you is YES "GO WITH IT, HAVE FUN" I almost feel like a less then stellar first wig is a right of passage. It's a learning experience (every costume is) just relax and have fun with it!

Never use the cheap face paint from Party City. You /will/ regret it. Either tube stuff or tub stuff, it's going to be awful for anything but the smallest and most temporary applications. As I said, I'd recommend not using creme paint at all for your arms, since it will smear, no matter how sealed. It's around $6~8 for a small pot of Kryolan that will last you for a long time. I've done my face, arms, and stomach with only about 1/4~1/3 of a small pot.

As for shaving, my arms aren't super hairy, but my legs are, so I did a test with some Kryolan Aquacolor. Here's the result (http://i57.tinypic.com/n172hi.jpg). I took that with flash, since I only have overhead lighting in my room and couldn't get it without shadows (though I can upload the non-flash photos if you want). As you can see, you can still use the paint. This was just one or two thin layers. It'll clump in the hair a little bit, and make the hair stand out, but it mostly just stays on the skin itself. I wouldn't worry too much about the hair if you are doing a water-based paint. (You'd need to shave it for PAX though)

If you are resolved to not lift your arms anyway, what about armsocks? They'd look weird in your armpit if you lifted your arms, but if you don't do that, they should look fine, and they'll save a lot of time the day of in painting yourself, and will save you the problem of possibly getting paint on your shirt.

As for your wig issue, once you dye it, it might neutralize the yellow in the wig cap enough that it won't be as noticeable. Or the wig cap might take more or less dye than the rest, or it will dye some strange, off color you didn't want. But if the wig is toast anyway, it's worth a shot.

Yeah I have used the paint from Party City and I had to deal with the mess on my clothes! The only pros is that it was cheap, nearby store, and I could mix the colors to get what I want.

And I would get nicer body paint but sadly I don't think it will even arrive on time for me to even test try it once I buy it! D:

Also, questions, if I want to get a light pinkish lavender color but I can't really find any of that specific color...Is it possible to mix colors with Kryolan? And would it be grease makeup, the normal supracolor, or maybe even the aquacolor water activated foundation? How does it feel? Can I use a soft brush to apply or just use a sponge?

Armsocks are a pain in the butt because what if they don't match the color I want or have on? And If I were to make a pair it would require time and experience.

Thank you! ^^

Do you have any dance or theatrical supply shops in your area? Or magic shops? That's where I used to get all my body paint before I moved to a city close to a Kryolan store (there's one in SF, if that's accessible to you at all).

You can mix Aquacolor, but it's a bit of a pain. You have to break up the cakes, add water, make sure all the little bits of product get dissolved in the water, mix your colors, pour them into a container, and wait for it to dry. This may take a while, though. Here's (http://yaexrae.tumblr.com/post/18535660892/water-based-troll-makeup-tutorial) a tutorial on how to mix water-based paints.

Based on what you've said so far, I'm assuming you are cosplaying Amethyst? 482 looks like a pretty good color, though I don't have any with my in person to look at. (https://us.kryolan.com/product/aquacolor-8-ml#482)

As for the type, Surapcolor = grease/creme paint; Aquacolor = water paint.

For application, I use a large round sponge (http://www.danceshopper.com/images/cosmetics/cosmetics/Round_Make-up_Sponges-m.jpg) and stipple the paint on in multiple thin layers. Check out this (http://fuckyeahhomestuckcosplay.tumblr.com/post/14131266407/troll-make-up-101) tutorial. Some people swear by brushes for water-based paint, and those work well for detail work (http://fabrickind.tumblr.com/post/118471634263#notes) in my experience, but I've never tried them on larger areas, so I can't personally attest to which techniques or types of brushes you should use. The detail work I did ended up being pretty smooth, so if you have a soft, smooth brush, you shouldn't have any streaks unless your brush is too wet or you push too hard.

It feels slightly dry on your skin. If you have dry skin already, use a moisture mask the night before, moisturize the day of, and make sure your face is clean and non-greasy before application. It won't terribly dry out your skin, but it might feel a little crusty or tight on your face. Also, make sure to exfoliate to get rid of any patchiness. The paint itself dries to a chalky finish. After a while, I hardly notice that it's on, though it does feel a little different from just regular heavy makeup on my face. It shouldn't flake or crack or crease if you applied it correctly and have good quality paint. It feels a lot better than cheap grease paint from Party City, that's for sure!

I only have real experience with aquacolor. I'm pretty sure mixing it would not work but I never tried. You can probably mix grease makeup or supracolor (which I think is grease based?). The problem is I don't think it seals as well so you would need to be careful around clothes (again, only used aquacolor so no personal experience). Aquacolor washes out of most clothes if it does get on them, although not always perfectly. I use a "kabuki" brush (e.l.f. brand, available at target) to apply my water based paint. I apply 3+ light coats waiting for the paint to dry in-between coats. Then I spray a sealer. Usually 2 coast of the sealer, you want good coverage with the sealer but you don't want it over saturated on you or it will drip and create steaks in you nice layers of paint. It feels... probably like you would expect. It's dry when it's on you and almost like you've coated yourself with a nice THIN layer of mud and let it dry (not at all cakie or crackling though). YOU SHOULD SPOT TEST FIRST, to make sure you don't have a reaction to it. If your from San Jose I can suggest a couple stores that offer this and other good quality costume makeup.

Thank you! ^^

Omg yes please! Tell me where! I do live in SJ! ^.^

Natasha's Attic located at 1238 S Bascom Ave has a fantastic selection. They also have a very knowledgeable guy for makeup on staff (I don't remember his name though) that can answer many of the questions you might have. At least they did the last time I was there about 10 months ago or so. And you would also be supporting a local business. The other place I know carries it is the large Diddams party store in Mountain View on W El Camino Real. There is also Debbie Lyn's Costumes which I think is still (or again) on Wolfe Rd in Sunnyvale but they have changed locations twice and have kinda weird hours if I remember correctly so I would call first to verify location/hours (http://dlcostumes.com/index.html (http://dlcostumes.com/index.html)).

Also looks as though Fun House Theatrical on E. Fremont Ave. Sunnyvale has Kryolan according to their website (http://funhousetheatricalcostumes.com (http://funhousetheatricalcostumes.com)) though I have never been there so can't say much more then that.

One more thing about the Mountain view Diddams, I know there is someone who works there that is experience in working with body paint so you can ask for Kate if they are working that day. They don't really work in the makeup department but all the people who do work in the makeup department are also pretty knowledgeable if Kate does not happen to be working at that time.

Ahhh do you think any of those stores would sell some nice wigs there or not?

I just ruined my wig because I am a failure LOL. So I can either buy another online but I got like 8 days left till I go to Fanime or just sob in my now blue poopy wig. Or I could check a store nearby and hope for something. ; u ;

Ahhh I totally didn't see this post! My bad! D: And now the body paint problem is being solved...And yes Amethyst! ^^ That color looks pretty good! I only fear that it will look too dark on my skin but oh well! I hope the stores I'm going at have that color. ; u ;

Hmmm my body in general is pretty dry but I'll make sure to start wearing moisturizer in advance. My face gets pretty oily & dry so I'll have to see what I can get for my face but that's something else. I feel like I might apply the paint incorrectly because I am a noob. XD

Not sure if you have amazon prime but if you do, you could probably order a nice wig from there and get it in time for fanime w/ 2day shipping

I think all of them probably have some wigs. However, I've generally found that wigs available online are much cheeper. You can find a decent quality wig for $15 online if you look around enough and are really careful but the ones in most costume stores of any decent quality will run you more like $25 to $35 or more if it's specialty or particularly long. If you are looking for a specific color of makeup and a specific brand you can always call the store to find out if they cary it. Save yourself a trip if they don't. (also I recall the Diddams does have a really good selection of wigs but more limited selection of makeup then some of the  others)

And I have called/asked my questions and decided to go to Natasha's Attic for makeup! :D

I mean I have no experience with wigs and whatnot. I got my first wig but like I mentioned its kind of bad at the top. I mean the hair is great and soft, easy to brush. But you can see the lines where the wefts were put in. UGLY! Perhaps I could save this poop wig for when I have to wear a hat! XD
But I am somewhat traumatized to get another wig online....I want a long wig but I also want it in a very well the lightest purple color if possible but then there is prices and arrival. Blehhh. I do agree that more wigs are cheaper online than well not online.

Ok does anyone recommend a good wig shop online or a good seller on amazon or ebay(idk)??? T n T

Preferably one that has faster shipping? I don't care if I have to pay extra.

http://www.lightinthebox.com/c/anime-cosplay-wigs_2308 (can't remember if I bought from them or not, but quality looks pretty good)
http://www.dolluxe.com (and thanks for asking about wigs, because I was looking through these sites and just realized Dolluxe was having a sale on one of the wigs I was looking at :) wig acquired)

Any one amazon seller tends to have a limited selection. More often you look for the type of wig you want (e.g. "blue short cosplay wig") pick the closest match from the search results and look at the seller feedback. Then pray.

As a last resort you could wait until Friday at Fanime. There is usually at least one or two shops in the dealers hall that are selling good quality wigs. Again though selection will be limited so don't wait as their selection will only get worse as they run out of stock on things. They also tend to be pricy, I'm not sure if they raise prices sometimes at cons but it wouldn't surprise me. But if you are willing to pay extra on shipping it might be just as economical to buy at con. I would NOT suggest trying to find a non-standard wig. If it will need lots of cutting and styling then trying to do that at con can be a real headache and lots of stress. I tend to be a "all cosplays finished before con" sort of person. I've tried working on cosplays at con with unfortunate result. I like to be able to get there and relax and enjoy myself not have to rush back to the hotel at 8 pm when there are still tons of things to see and then not even finish working on stuff until 2 am. not a pleasant way to spend the con. BUT if it's a really basic wig, then it's an option. What is the character anyway? was it mentioned?

Well fortunately I got my wig and risked it getting from Amazon. It had a guarantee it would arrive the next day after I order it.

It was true! And I like the wig! It's a little tight but then again I don't have a nylon wig cap thing.

Thanks for the help! I'll save some of those for the future! XD

So the store where I went I ended up getting wolfe cakes. And the dude gave me ben nye liquiset bottle. How would I use the liquiset? I would mainly want to apply it on my pits but I dunno. How do I use a bottle of liquiset? Would I even have to? <_>

EDIT: Btw it's not a spray bottle.

You do not have to use it. It can be used instead of water and is supposed to make the makeup stay on better. I think the best method is to pour some into the lid of the wolfe cake and dip your brush or sponge into that before loading it with the colored makeup (dump any remainder before closing the cake, you don't want a soupy cake). But honestly you don't NEED it at all, especially if you are using a sealer after applying your makeup. I used it and I'm not sure I noticed any real difference (but I'm not 100% sure I had the technique quite right).

Hi. It's Barry... I've been trying to locate the group photos from the 2015 FMA gathering. Can't seem to find it. Has it been posted on the Forum yet? Please send me the link? Thanks.
