I have a question!

I'm probably going to try for at-con signups, so I'd like to ask this before I choose my songs. I'm between two songs right now for prelims -- one has a good stopping point at 1:06, and the other has a point stopping point at 2:07. I guess this question comes in two parts: will it hurt us if the song is a bit short, though it is a minute of solid singing?; is there a slight "grace period" so a song that is only a few seconds over the 2:00 mark will be faded out -after- the end of the singing?; if not, will it hurt us to have the last couple of words/notes chopped off at the end of the performance? I think that you guys have allowed for a slight grace period in the past, but with the shorter time limits this year, I'm not sure if you will be doing that again. Knowing if there is a grace period or if a song that uses only a little over half the time allowed will hurt me will greatly affect my choice. (I might also just go with whatever my mood is the day of, haha~ The 2:07 song is a little crazy)

Thank you. :)

At 2:00, the tech crew will start fading out. So it's not a cut off at 2:00, it's a gradual decrease of the music's volume.
And no, there is no penalty to have the last few words cut off.

Can we bring a DVD in place of a CD?

Answer from our Technical Section: Not all DVDs may work on our system. If you wish to use a DVD, please bring it during the warmup period so we can test it out. Please have a CD ready as backup in case the DVD does not work.

If the songs requested don't have to be Japanese, then I'd like to request two Queen songs: Bohemian Rhapsody and Another One Bites the Dust.

Thanks again for your hard work, Hank!  The karaoke room is my favorite part of fanime. <3

We have a separate American database that has all the Western popular songs you'd typically find at any decent karaoke place. It is available during Open Mic upon request.

You are far too kind- actually Tommy, Ska, Elliot, and the rest of our amazing crew do most of the hard work. I just answer forum posts...

Instead of a CD can we use a DVD instead? I can do visuals along with the music.

I don't think our setup supports a video DVD. Will confirm with our Technical Crew.

Hi Hank, just checking in about this :)

This list will be up tonight. Got home a bit too late last night.

aww man, sign ups are over already? I was thinking of signing up since last week. but being my first time, I thought the link would be posted on the main fanime site and couldn't find it. just realized today it's on the forums...

We will take sign ups at con. The reason we don't post the link on the main FanimeCon site is that sign ups usually fill up so fast that by the time the info is posted, it's time to take it down. We will be posting the at con sign up info both on the web site and in this forum.

Signups are now closed. We will be posting a list of received entries on Monday. There are no email confirmations- I am not that great a PHP programmer  :P

Someone signed up twice, so I deleted their earlier entry. With this correction, we still have one spot remaining.

And yeah, there are always people who don't show up, so if you don't get in via online signups there will be a chance at con.
#28
Person singing the English Sailor Moon theme song in the first round, please sign up again. You did not submit a complete address.

As of this post, there is one spot remaining in the contest. The next valid entry will close online signups.
#29
Would the singer who signed up to sing "Eyes On Me" in the first round please sign up again. You did not submit a complete address.

My friend and I are doing a duet, do I post both hers and mine on mine form or do I do a separate one?

Both together as one entry.

Can I sign up for a friend as well as myself?  She has a job interview in the morning and has to commute several hours to get there and thus has to go to sleep.  Just wanna know if this is possible.

Yes, but it would be your responsibility to ensure your friend's entry is correct and complete.

The issue has been fixed, or at least we have a temporary workaround.

Signups will begin at exactly 11:00PM.
#34
We are having an issue with the database. Fixing right now. Will update in this thread.

The current ETA for the start of Karaoke Contest sign ups tonight is 11:00 pm. If there are any changes to this time, we will update this post accordingly.

You will need to provide the following information:

1. Real Name and basic contact information.
2. A valid song for preliminary round.
3. A valid song for final round.
4. Time preference.

You may change songs at the time of check in at con. Entries not competed will not be accepted. Every year we get a couple of people who don't put their full name, or leave out their address or email. Don't be that person!

Also, please note that the contest order is determined as follows:

1. Those who pick "early as possible" in the order they signed up.
2. Those who pick "no preference" in the order they signed up.
3. Any at con sign ups.
4. Those who pick "late as possible",  in the reverse order of sign up.

Okay, so now I'm a bit confused since the "editing rules" aren't laid out super clearly in the initial post and I've never competed at Fanime, so maybe someone could post those specific rules?  Mostly I'm confused as to why we can't cut a track that we bring ourselves....seems to make more sense to let us pick whatever 2:00 section we'd like and let us just cut it beforehand so the staff doesn't have to fade out the track after 2 minutes?

Sorry, just want to make sure I understand before I make song decisions...

Again, I am not staff, but from what I understand based on my questions and the rules of previous years, you cannot cut the audio.  The only editing you can do is to remove vocals on a non-karaoke track.  Anything else is prohibited.  In addition, unless the rules have changed, you don't get to pick what two minute section you sing.  You sing the first two minutes of the piece.  The only exception is if there is a long instrumental introduction.  For example, last year I sang Manten by Kalafina.  The piece has about 25 seconds of instrumental introduction.  I had the staff start the piece 20 seconds in so that it didn't cut into my performance time.  I would advise playing at least a little bit of the instrumental intro so you can get your pitch accurately.

If I've made any mistakes, Hank, please feel free to correct me.  I just figured I'd give her the information that I already know.

This is pretty much correct. Any editing is to remove the vocals only. No re-arranging or remixing.

Hi Hank!

Quick question: you mention that we can't add harmony tracks, etc....but how about cutting down a song that is too long (especially for the first round)?  For example if I wanted to sing a verse and the bridge of a song as opposed to just the first 2 minutes (which might have a long intro that wastes time) I'd need to cut the karaoke track to fit what parts I'd like to sing.  Is this okay?

Thanks!

No need to cut down a song- if it has a long intro, we can start it when the vocals begin. All songs are faded out at the time limit.

Edit again because I have some more questions: is it ok to leave the somewhat long-ish introduction in if you have a dance/performing part to do to it? (I'm a theater person so I have the whole thing planned in my head haha) also if it's just a few seconds over the time limit is that ok? or will it be faded out to end exactly at the time limit? And will points be taken off if   for the first round it's only 1:30?

There is no penalty for songs shorter than the time limit. We start fading at 2:00, so you may get an extra second or two.

Hi Hank! <3

I have a quick question! Since I don't speak japanese, sometimes choosing songs can be kinda tricky! On youtube, some people like rockleetist will write english lyrics to fit the the song's melody and meaning as closely as possible. Would be acceptable to use something like this in the contest?

You would have to sing the Japanese lyrics, unless the song is an official English version (for example, for the dubbed version of the anime). Most of our competitors do not speak Japanese.

hank-san, what time is the sign-up going to be posted?

It will be in the evening. I will announce exact time in a few days.

I can't wait to see all the new talent this year.  And I can actually do open mic afterwards!!!  YAY!!!!!  XD

Anybody want to share their song plans for the contest?  =3

Here's my plans for my vocal destruction =P.....

Prelim: "Blaze" sung by HIMEKA
(originally sung by someone else as the opening for Tsuabsa.  Forgive my ignorance at the moment)

Final (if by some miracle I make it that far): "Endless Story" by Yuna Ito

A little bit of karaoke trivia for you guys: HIMEKA won one of our contests back in 2002 (at another convention).

Another question regarding the wording of the rules!  In the first part of the rules you say that up to 45 will compete, but you then mention sign-ups in excess of 40.  Will there be 40 slots like previous years, or will there be 45?  Thanks!

45 entries this year. Note that the song time limit in the qualifying round is shorter this year. 2:00 instead of 2:30.

The contest is only Friday, 24th, correct?  Or is it done through two days?
Just want to be sure.

Thank you!

Correct. That was a typo. Fixed.

and so it begins...

hi hank. do you happen to have a time-frame for registering for the contest?
thanks

We will post an approximate time frame a few days before signups open.

Hey Hank!

Several quick questions.  Last year we were allowed to remove vocals from non-karaoke songs at home.  Is that still okay this year?  I preferred it that way, because then I could be sure the vocals were dampened exactly as I had expected and there were no surprises during the contest.  I'm also assuming that as in previous years, recording harmonies and adding them to a track at home is not allowed?  Just making sure things have stayed the same. :D

My final question has to do with allowed songs.  One of the songs I want to sing is an ending from a gundam movie.  It's in English, and there was never any Japanese version of it.  It is not a straight cover of any song and is original to the movie.  This is alright, yes?

Thanks again for running this competition, as always!  You and the other karaoke staff are AMAZING.  Your hard work is really appreciated! <3

The song editing rules are unchanged. The only change you may make is to remove the vocals. No re-arranging, adding tracks, or remixing.
Based on your description, the Gundam song sounds okay.
You're very welcome- You guys are a fantastic group of singers!

OMFG I REMMEBER THIS SHOW...
however i really heard that...uhm
i forgot his name
but he has a 13 on a shirt, its blue.. and he was the host.... except SOME GUY COSPLAYED AS that HOST with a LEss than symbol and a NUMBER 3...

i may not know both their names but I wanted to thank them both for cheering me up since i was very depress!

also... i wanna thank the big talking bird, two guys in leather pants O_o!.. and this couple...erh one of them wears a STItch character undergarment!

again my question is WHO is the guy in both blue shirts O_O!, and how are they doing?  I know the actual host said that was his last time being there, but curious if he is just going to come back to just.. ya know.. support!

Those of us who were on staff in 2007 have the blue karaoke jerseys. Tommy's number is not 13, though.
